Chapter 1

Chloe Davis stood in the grand ballroom of the Stone estate, the place she had called home for a decade. The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and the low hum of conversation. She had planned this party down to the last detail, from the champagne flutes that sparkled under the chandeliers to the precise shade of cream in the floral arrangements. This was supposed to be the night, the culmination of ten years of unwavering devotion to Ethan Stone. He was finally coming back, stepping out of the shadows of his tech empire and back into the world, back to her.

Everyone thought this was it. They all looked at her with knowing smiles, their eyes congratulating her on finally securing the most elusive bachelor in the country. She had sacrificed everything for him, molding her life around his monastic dedication to work, waiting patiently for the day his guarded heart would finally open. She believed that day had come.

Then Ethan walked in.

He looked as powerful as ever, his tailored suit doing little to hide the intense energy that always surrounded him. But he wasn' t alone. A woman with fiery red hair and a dress that looked like it was poured onto her body clung to his arm. Chloe' s smile froze on her face.

Ethan didn' t seem to notice. He led the woman through the crowd, his gaze sweeping over the room with a look of ownership. He stopped in front of Chloe, his eyes cold and distant.

"Chloe, this is Serena Vance," he said, his voice flat. "My fiancée."

The word hit Chloe with the force of a physical blow. Fiancée. The room started to spin, the polite chatter fading into a dull roar in her ears.

Ethan' s attention was already moving on. He gestured towards the small, velvet box in Chloe' s hand. She had been holding it all night, her heart pounding with anticipation. It was the ring she had spent weeks helping the jeweler design, the one she thought would soon be on her own finger.

"Give me the ring," Ethan said, his tone impatient. "I need to give it to Serena."

He didn' t even look at her as he spoke. He was looking at Serena, a faint smile playing on his lips.

"And after that," he continued, turning his cold gaze back to Chloe, "I need you to prepare a bath for her. 999 rose petals. The water has to be 113 degrees. Serena always liked it scalding."

The ring box slipped from Chloe' s numb fingers, landing with a soft thud on the plush carpet. Stunned, she could only stare at him. The man she had given her entire adult life to was standing in front of her, introducing his fiancée and ordering her to prepare the woman' s bath like a common servant.

She turned to leave, a choked sound escaping her throat. She had to get out of there.

"Don' t be so dramatic, Chloe," Ethan said, his voice laced with annoyance. He was so confident, so sure of his control over her. He truly believed she couldn't leave him, that she had nowhere else to go. "Just do as I say."

But Ethan Stone didn' t know everything. He didn't know that Chloe Davis was also about to get married.

Just yesterday, she had felt hope. It was a suffocatingly hot summer day, and she was in her small home office, the one tucked away in a corner of his mansion. Sweat beaded on her forehead as she poured over market analyses for him, the air thick and still. She had looked up and found him standing in the doorway, his gaze intense, almost predatory. He had questioned her, pressing her for affirmations of her loyalty, never seeming satisfied with her answers. A chilling sense of being trapped had enveloped her then, a feeling she had pushed down for years.

That night, their tense discussions had escalated. They moved from the study to his private gym, and finally to the bedroom, the lines between professional and personal blurring completely.

"Chloe, I' m ready to come back," he had whispered against her skin, his sweat dripping onto her.

She had embraced him, her body and heart aching with relief. She believed it was a confession, a promise. She believed her decade of unwavering support had finally melted his guarded heart. Now, looking at him with his new fiancée, she knew it was all a lie.

Chapter 2

The hope she had felt just twenty-four hours ago now seemed like a cruel joke. When Ethan had handed her the list the next morning, her heart had soared. A custom-designed ring. A specific designer gown from Paris. 999 imported red roses. She had assumed it was all for her, for their engagement, for the fairytale ending she had earned.

Now, Serena Vance stood before her, wearing that exact gown. The ring, the one Chloe had picked out, was sparkling on Serena' s finger. This lavish "unveiling" party wasn' t for Ethan' s return to society. It was Serena' s engagement party. And the roses, the 999 perfect, imported roses, were for Serena' s bath.

Chloe felt like a fool. A complete and utter fool. Ten years of her life, ten years of catering to his every whim, of suppressing her own needs and desires, of living in his shadow, and it all came down to this. The humiliation was so profound it left her speechless.

"Well?" Ethan' s voice cut through her daze, sharp and demanding. "Are you going to just stand there? Deliver the flowers and prepare the bath. Serena will be moving in tonight."

The veins on his forehead bulged slightly, a sure sign of his rising anger. It was a look she knew all too well, a look that had always made her shrink and obey.

Chloe' s gaze fell on the cart of roses nearby, their deep crimson petals still fresh and vibrant. A tightness seized her chest, and breathing suddenly felt like swallowing razor blades. For the first time in a decade, a different feeling rose up inside her, stronger than fear. It was a cold, hard resolve.

She lifted her head and met his furious gaze. "If she' s moving in," Chloe said, her voice surprisingly steady, "then I' m moving out."

A sneer twisted Ethan' s handsome features. He took a step closer, his presence overwhelming. "Is that right?" he said, his voice low and dangerous. "Your struggling family gives you the courage to leave me?"

He grabbed her, his fingers digging into her arm. "Chloe, have you been spying on me for your grandfather all these years? Is that what this is about? How much did he pay you to stick around?"

Chloe' s breath hitched. A spy? He thought she was a spy?

Ten years ago, her family' s business had collapsed overnight. Her father had been destroyed, and creditors were hounding her and her mother. Ethan' s grandfather, Mr. Stone, a long-time family friend, had stepped in. He had offered them protection and assistance. He had also proposed a strategic marriage alliance to help rebuild her family' s fortune, a choice between two of his grandsons: Ethan, or his cousin, Alex Chen.

Chloe, blinded by a youthful crush and a desperate hope for love, had chosen Ethan. She chose to dedicate herself to him, to support his ambitions, even knowing his heart had once belonged to another. She thought she could win him over. She thought her devotion would eventually mean something.

But today, standing in this ballroom, she knew Ethan was no longer an option. He had never been an option.
