I sit in my cell watching the old ceiling fan rotate and hum. I could hear the city noise and sirens from outside the tiny window of my cell. It was a constant reminder of a life of freedom I once had, but it seems impossible for me now.
I could never have imagined I would one day end up here, surrounded by walls and cold metals. The incessant rotation of the fan pulls me back to the memories of betrayal and hurt I carry with me like a bad omen.
As my head continued to spin with the rhythm of the old fan, I replayed my last visit to my ex's mansion, his girlfriend, my younger sister, Mirabel Dawn, had just put to bed a bouncy baby boy and Bryan Argol, my once cherished lover, was hosting a party. Hearing this news at first, I cried my eyes out that night but decided I should be there for my little nephew, Cole Argol.
I recalled how the music had died down when I stepped into the grand hall. This was the life that should have been mine. I was bitter with frustration and the pain of their betrayal was unbearable.
But I managed to wear an indifferent smile that night. The silence in the air was suffocating as everyone cast pitiful and cautious glances at me.
No one expected me to show up but I did. My mind went from the scenario of the evening to the smile on Cole's face. He was a lovely child and I wondered why anyone would have a reason to kidnap such a sweet soul. But here I am, framed for such a crime.
I also recounted in my head the event of the evening that changed my fate. It was an ordinary evening, just like every other night shift at the urban lounge where I worked, The Brass. located at an alley in Downtown Queens.
It was a spot for bohemian artists and other patrons. I had tried to put my head into my work all through the many days that followed the event at Bryan Argol's mansion where I had to take in the reality of my lost happiness.
I spent several nights at The Brass working and trying to drown my head in the whispers of gossip and the sounds of clinking cocktail glasses that floated through the lounge.
I never imagined that this one night would change my whole life forever. I had been busy behind the counter pouring drinks into glasses when the sound of sirens filled the air, cutting through the sound of music and the voices of drunk customers. Thus, transforming The Brass into a scene of utter chaos. My senses heightened and I was on edge.
I watched as the uniformed officers rushed through the door shouting at the top of their voices. Most customers had already fled in different directions feeling guilty for reasons best known to them. I didn't try to run because I didn't feel like I had to.
But harsh reality dawned rapidly on me when the officers approached the counter where I stood. I, Tessy Dawn, was accused of kidnap, a monstrous crime that, even at my darkest moment, I could not think of committing. How could I have kidnapped an innocent child? The question spun in my head over and over again. I was too shocked to move. I could remember the mixture of emotions I felt in that instant: anger, frustration, and confusion.
I thought of the possibility of anyone wanting my downfall that badly, as to frame me for such a cold crime. Could Mira have done this? She had always been envious of me, believing I had everything she never had. Ranging from beauty to intelligence and the love of a man she desired.
But could she have gone this far to steal away my happiness? And Bryan.... we had once loved and cherished each other. He had promised me forever. What reason does he have to turn against me to make me take the fall for a crime so treacherous?.
Confusion and fear overwhelmed me as I was handcuffed and dragged away like a criminal, my heart thrummed in my ears. I was innocent of this hideous crime but the evidence presented before me was brilliantly orchestrated by those who sought to destroy me.
Now, sitting here in this cold cell, impenetrable by the liveliness of the city, the blaring car horns and bustling crowds, memories of betrayal came rushing back. I wondered what my sister and my ex-fianceé were up to.
Were they happy together or did they spend every moment regretting they betrayed me and framed me up? Does Bryan still think about me? Could a love so deep be broken by a mere lustful pleasure?.
I feel isolated by betrayal and injustice from the world of happiness I once knew. It all comes rushing back every time I shut my eyes.
Yet, in my despair, I hung to a shard of hope that promised vindication and redemption. I believe that one day the truth will surface.
That the intelligently crafted evidence against me would be unveiled and I will be vindicated. But until then, I have to live through this repeated pattern of watching the fan spin and letting my thoughts wander through time and all that had happened in the past months.
I closed my eyes and said a prayer for my redemption. "May the truth be revealed". I whispered. In this prayer, I find the courage to go through every day in this cold cell, awaiting my trial.
As time passed, the bustling of the city was reduced to sirens and few sounds of footsteps.
I shut my eyes again, trying not to let my mind wander, understanding that even though I, Miss Tessy Dawn, am being condemned for a crime I did not commit and I am a victim of betrayal from my ex and sister, justice will prevail.
It was an autumn day in Queens, the day fate with its unpredictable twists, introduced Bryan Argol into my life and altered my destiny forever.
The scent of falling leaves hung in the cool breeze mixing with the familiar smell of hay and damp earth from the stable. It was a calm morning.
The Dawn's Equestrian Center was a hidden oasis among the skyscrapers in the city. It has always been my sanctuary.
My beloved parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dawn had spent most of their lives converting the ancient stable into a modern facility without altering its historic and timeless charm.
They poured all their love into this stable to make it more than a business place, to a sanctuary and a home.
As I grew up here, I learned everything that made this place what it was. I enjoyed the peacefulness that followed watching and training the horses. This place was my escape from the rush of the city.
On this fateful morning, during my usual routine of grooming the horses, cleaning the stalls and getting everything set for the day's business, the horses whinnied loudly as their ears inclined to the sound of an approaching motorcycle from outside the wooden gates.
I turned my head curiously to see who it was, he dismounted from his motorcycle. It was Bryan Argol, a name I did not yet know, but would soon be carved in my memory forever.
He had a very charming figure, he wore a fitted shirt and dark jeans that complemented his tall frame.
His move was effortless and he seemed like a confident man. He had a strong jawline with angles that were highlighted by the sunlight.
He had a subtle smile that seemed warm and mysterious.
For a moment I was lost. The noise of the city seemed to disappear, leaving just the two of us. My heart throbbed loudly but I managed to straighten up, determined not to let my nervousness show.
I walked to where he stood as my blonde curly hair, worn in a ponytail, bounced slightly with every step I took. My shy grey eyes met his as if searching for something.
"Hello there". I greeted him with a tone that was made to sound stiff and void of nervousness.
He turned to face me fully and for a moment, I thought I saw something in his eyes that seemed like recognition or interest, I was not sure. But it sent a sense of chill through my spine.
"Hi, good morning to you". He replied with a deep smooth voice. "My name is Bryan Argol, and I am interested in buying a mare from your stable."
I tightened my fingers around the brush I still held and gave a nod. "I am Miss Tessy Dawn, and you are welcome".
A soft smile appeared on his face as he said, "Nice meeting you, Miss Tessy".
We approached the stables, I took a glance at him as he was taking in every detail. He looked carefully at the horses with admiration in his eyes.
"This is an incredible place," he said under his breath. "It is a peaceful sanctuary as opposed to the city".
His words meant a lot to me. Only a few understood the meaning and significance of this place to me and my family.
"Yes, it truly is". I replied. "This place was built by my parents with love. It is not just a business to us but a legacy".
He nodded his head and something told me he understood. At least, the sincerity of his expression did.
As we arrived at a spot in the stables, I could sense that his attention was drawn to a mare in the stall.
Lola was a gorgeous mare. My sister, Mira, and I had taken pleasure in grooming her specially. She was sleek and graceful.
"Her name is Lola". I said as I reached out to stroke her mane and she nuzzled my palm.
I noticed Bryan observing with keen interest as I connected with Lola.
"Your connection is remarkable". He spoke.
There was a deep sense of admiration in his tone.
I caught him staring at me, we locked our gaze and for a moment, I felt visible. He shifted his gaze back to the mare and we talked about her temperament, strength, and what Bryan wanted in a horse.
We had an effortless and smooth conversation. We talked about the farm and even our matters. His questions were thoughtful.
He was different from every other rich client I had ever come in contact with in Queens, who only took horses as a symbol of strength. Bryan seemed to honestly care about them.
As the sunlight penetrated the windows of the stables, I felt an unfamiliar sensation creeping in. It was hope. Bryan didn't seem like just a random customer, he was peculiar. He viewed things deeper and it made me curious about this stranger.
After we had concluded our business, it was time for him to depart. He paused for a while at the doorway of the stable.
"My assistant will come and pick up the mare by sundown, I sincerely appreciate the tour, and I thank you for selling me your favorite horse, Miss. Tessy". He spoke without shifting his gaze from mine.
I gave a shy smile and tucked a stray curl of my hair behind my ear. "It is my pleasure, you are always welcome here, anytime."
He seemed like he wanted to say something more, but hesitated and slightly nodded as he turned and made his way out.
I watched him walk to where his motorcycle was parked, he turned on the engine and drove off.
I watched until his image blended with the landscape. A mixture of anxiety and curiosity overwhelmed me.
This day had changed something in me. I was not sure what it was, but I was sure the meeting was destiny.
The visit of this stranger has shattered a wall in me.
The days after my encounter with Bryan were confusing and filled with a sense of longing. I would stare at my reflection in the glass windows anytime I passed by, and I would wonder if Bryan saw more in me other than an ordinary girl from Queens.
My daily chore at the stables was a mixture of hard work and longing imaginations.
The weight of our family legacy weighed heavily on me as the firstborn. Mirabel, my younger sister, was a kind and ambitious girl, but she still had a lot to learn about caring for the horses and taking care of the family business.
It had always rested on my shoulders to handle business.
I spent long hours at the stables trying to bury my head in the sound of hooves and the familiar smell of fresh hay and moist earth.
Our conversation played over and over again in my head and I wondered if there was any meaning behind his soft smile.
I imagine him standing at the doorway and looking at me with admiration and curiosity.
But as the sun went down, a worrying feeling overtook me. We were from two different worlds.
I finally settled on the thought that I was a simple farm girl while he was from a world I could only dream of, a world of riches and luxury.
Days passed, and then one fateful morning, while I was arranging the track room, I heard a loud knock on the glass door.
I reached for the door and standing outside was a corporately dressed man with a refined presence like the world he belonged to. He was a messenger.
He was dressed in a nicely made suit and I noticed his neatly cut hair. He held a leather bag, and he had a soft smile on his face.
"Good day, ma'am, are you Miss. Tessy Dawn?". His tone was very polite and professional.
"Yes, good morning to you sir." I replied in the calmest way I could muster.
He gave me an envelope, sealed and embossed with a beautiful crest.
"I was sent by Mr. Bryan Argol. He is requesting for someone to come to his equestrian facility to assist him train the mare he recently purchased".
As our eyes met, I sensed a hint of excitement in his eyes.
My fingers trembled as I collected the envelope. His words settled over me. I recalled the messenger's words in my head as I walked back to the main area.
Training Bryan's horse was not just a job, it was an invitation to step into his life, even if it would be for a short time.
But I somehow hesitated deep down. I still felt like an ordinary caretaker from a stable, unworthy of being in the world of luxury Bryan represented.
I sat with Mira at our staff lounge later that evening. Her eyes grew wide with curiosity and something else I could not place when I read the contents of the letter Bryan had sent.
"So, he remembers you, how amazing, Tessy. You have to go, you are good at what you do, and you are a very likable person". Her tone was low.
It sounded as if she did not want me to leave, I was her companion and best friend.
Something stirred within me at her words of encouragement. She was not just my sister, she was a believer in my abilities.
I settled my mind to take up the task after reflecting for a long time. It was not just about training a horse, it was my chance to see the world I had always dreamt of.
It was my one chance to prove to myself and, more importantly, to Bryan, that I was not just an ordinary farm girl but someone more capable than I appeared.
I passed the news to my parents who also expressed their faith in me, and began careful preparations for my journey. I went over the records and checked on the horses to make sure everything was okay for the period I would be away.
Under the pale sky the next morning, I packed a small bag and bade my family goodbye.
Mira held on tightly to me as sadness crept over her face.
As I stepped out onto the streets, the sound of cars and pedestrians blended with the fading of my modest life. I felt a mixture of excitement and curiosity and it made every step I took exciting.
As I navigated through the city, I could see a world that was far different from mine. I replayed the words of the messenger as I approached Bryan's mansion.
It was a private estate that seemed like something out of a dream. The building was a tasteful blend of traditional and modern designs, its lawns were green and carefully maintained.
Its stables were elegant. I cross-checked the address again to ensure that I was not in the wrong location and as I walked through the entrance of the facility, I felt like I was on a new chapter on which I would rewrite my story.
I was diligent and devoted to my work in the days that followed. Everything reminded me of the bond I shared with the animals, a bond that went beyond business.
My days were busy and stressful. I buried my head in my work, trying not to think about Bryan. We had not seen each other since I arrived, I was told he was away on a business trip.
Most nights when the world had gone to sleep, I would stand by the large window of my room and watch the city lights. I would let my mind replay my encounter with Bryan over and over and wonder if he also thought about me in his busy schedule.
I was very sure of one thing, as long as Bryan had taken his time to reach out to me in a letter, it simply meant that he saw something that mattered in me.
