Chapter 1
When Roderick saw me standing at the door, he jumped up from the sofa.
His face was full of panic and confusion as he took a few steps toward me.
"Alexandra, what are you doing here?"
I looked at the extravagant private room. Even though I was sweating from delivering food in the scorching heat, I felt a chill run down my spine.
I heard my own trembling voice ask him, "Aren't you supposed to be seeing a specialist at the hospital, Roderick?"
Roderick tried to make excuses.
"Alexandra, listen to me. Dr. Hayden's appointment was rescheduled for tomorrow, so I came to meet up with some friends."
"Sorry, I should have told you in advance."
He took my hand and gently rubbed my palm.
This was his usual way of apologizing to me, and it had always worked.
But not today.
I coldly brushed his hand away, took out my broken phone with the cracked screen, and opened the hospital's specialist appointment page.
Dr. Hayden was scheduled for today, but not tomorrow.
I showed him the phone, and his face turned ashen.
"Alexandra, I didn't mean to, I..."
I laughed bitterly in anger.
If I hadn't overheard their conversation, I might have been fooled by him.
Just moments ago, I stood at the door and heard their laughter-
"Man, this amount of money isn't even enough for a meal. Why lie to the girl?"
"Wow, $40,000, down to the last cent. Didn't even leave money for his own meal! Roderick, you've got some nerve, tricking the poor girl like that! She's head over heels for you. Shouldn't you give her a break now?"
"Come on, she's just smitten because Roderick's handsome. She's just a lovestruck woman!"
Roderick's slightly cold voice came through, "There's one last step to pass. I need to see if she'll still forgive me after spending all her money on luxury goods."
Someone whistled, "Roderick, you're making us all jealous! The girl is so forgiving and devoted to you. Who here has your luck?"
The truth was, all of this was Roderick's doing!
To test how far I would go for him, he treated me like a plaything!
I took a deep breath, trying hard to suppress my sorrow, and spoke to him.
"Roderick, is this fun for you?"
"I've given my all to this relationship, stretching every dollar to make ends meet, delivering food until I'm parched and exhausted, too stingy to buy a bottle of water! And you? You're here having a great time, spending nearly fifty thousand dollars on a meal!"
"Seeing me suffer brings you joy! All those cruel tests were just for your fun! Roderick, you really know how to ruin someone!"
I was seething with rage, reminding myself not to shed a tear for this jerk, but my eyes quickly filled with tears from the anger and frustration!
I threw the delivery box to the ground, revealing high-end sushi inside.
Chapter 2
When I snagged this $4,800 delivery order, I was already calculating how to spend the $1,600 delivery fee.
I needed to buy Roderick a new watch; he said the old one was outdated.
I also wanted to treat him to a nice meal. It had been a long time since we ate out, and he always craved good food.
Additionally, he wanted a pair of shoes from a rather expensive brand, so I had to keep saving up.
"Roderick, the money I transferred to you is everything left in my bank account. I want you to see a specialist and cooperate with the treatment! You know how many orders I have to run to earn that money! I haven't had a decent night's sleep in ages, and you know that too!"
"But you, day after day, have been toying with me!"
For the past three years, I had worked myself to the bone, sacrificing all my dignity to save money for his treatment.
All for the sake of a future together.
He watched me suffer, saw me struggle with financial difficulties, and remained indifferent.
He even took advantage of me, making me earn money for his supposed depression treatment.
Some people could spend thousands on a single meal.
There was no depression at all!
Roderick's face turned pale.
He knew he couldn't argue anymore and looked at me with guilt.
"I'm sorry, it's all my fault."
"I remember all the money you spent on me, I..."
I glared at him, cutting him off, "Let's break up!"
"Someone as noble as you should return to your noble world!"
As I spoke, I yanked off the bracelet on my wrist and threw it at him with all my might.
He had personally made that bracelet for me, claiming he had spent a long time learning how to do it.
Back then, I was deeply moved.
Now, it was nothing but endless irony.
Roderick probably never had to lift a finger; there were always people willing to do things for him.
Or perhaps he could just buy a random bracelet from the street to fool me.
After all, I was foolish enough to believe whatever he said.
Roderick caught the bracelet, clutching it tightly in his hand.
His eyes were filled with reluctance, regret, and deep sorrow.
"Alexandra, I truly like you."
His words made me feel even worse.
Even his identity and depression were fake, so how could his feelings be real?
Just as I was about to mock him, a little princess walked out from inside.
She truly looked like a princess, wearing a sparkling crown, with skin so delicate it seemed like it could bruise at the slightest touch. She was clearly a pampered young lady.
She spoke in a coquettish tone, "Alexandra, how can you be more unreasonable than me? Roderick has already admitted his mistake, so why don't you just let it go? I've never seen him be so patient with anyone else."
Roderick frowned, "Kathryn, don't make things worse."
I had already noticed the little princess and felt suspicious.
With a woman's intuition, I coldly asked her, "Who are you? What's your relationship with Roderick?"
The little princess hooked her arm around Roderick's and smiled charmingly, "I'm also his girlfriend. He needs a girlfriend to accompany him to high-society events."
"Alexandra, don't be angry. I'm someone who knows the rules and won't cause you any trouble. We can stay out of each other's way."
She claimed she wouldn't trouble me, but her words were full of disdain.
Her words were also quite explosive.
A man's ultimate dream is to have a woman in every city.
They took it for granted, but to me, it was a huge insult.
I raised my hand and slapped Roderick hard across the face twice.
"Trash!"
Still not satisfied, I swung my purse at him!
Roderick, maybe feeling guilty, dodged a couple of times but didn't really fight back.
It was the others who got anxious and stepped in to break us up.
The little princess called me a madwoman, and in my rage, I even hit her.
In the end, Roderick stepped in to shield her.
Finally, he handed me a card.
"Alexandra, I'm truly sorry. I know no amount of apologies can make up for this. Please accept this compensation."
No one would refuse money.
Moreover, this money was rightfully mine.
I kicked him hard in the leg, took the money, and turned to leave.
There was a lot of money on the card, and money could solve many problems.
I decisively quit all my jobs and rented a new apartment.
Before, to save money for Roderick's treatment, I had rented a rundown apartment where the pipes were always clogged, and the light bulbs constantly needed replacing.
But thinking about our future made me feel hopeful, and I could endure any hardship.
But now...
I packed up all of Roderick's belongings and threw them into the trash, just waiting to move out.
On my last trip downstairs to throw out the garbage, I saw a suspicious figure rummaging through the trash can.
Chapter 3
As I walked closer, I realized it was Roderick.
Caught red-handed, his face, half-covered by a mask, was filled with panic and embarrassment.
I noticed he was holding the music box he had once given me, along with our couple photos and other mementos related to us.
And on his wrist was the braided bracelet I had thrown at him.
Everything about him seemed out of place with his usual image.
I couldn't help but mock him, "The esteemed young master Roderick, cherishing these cheap knick-knacks?"
Roderick looked at me with sorrowful eyes, his voice choked with emotion.
"Alexandra, I know I have no right to ask for your forgiveness, but I can't let you go."
"Three years of feelings, I was sincere with you. No girl has ever moved me like you did. I don't want to lose you."
I laughed bitterly at his words.
"Your so-called sincerity means having a girlfriend on the side? Your so-called sincerity means pretending to be poor every day to fool me?!"
"You're just like this pile of trash, only fit to stay in the garbage forever!"
After my outburst, I turned to leave, but he grabbed my sleeve.
He hurriedly explained, "Kathryn and I aren't what you think. Nothing happened between us, and I never publicly acknowledged her. Just think of her as a meaningless accessory."
I couldn't help but laugh at his absurdity.
"You didn't publicly acknowledge her, but when she claimed to be your girlfriend, you didn't deny it either. Everyone in your circle thinks she's your girlfriend!"
"Have some dignity and get out of my sight!"
I forcefully shook off his hand and returned to my apartment, urging the movers to hurry up.
I couldn't stand breathing in a place tainted by Roderick's memory any longer!
It was absolutely revolting!
As I was moving out, Roderick followed me.
His eyes were red, and he choked up as he spoke to me, "This place holds our memories. Weren't we happy together?"
I coldly replied, "Those happy times have turned into today's disgust!"
He continued to beg humbly, "Alexandra, please give me another chance."
"I'm begging you. I'll do anything if you come back to me."
His voice was already tinged with tears.
The once-proud young master Roderick, now showing such a sorrowful expression to a poor girl like me.
He had tested me, enjoying three years of a perfect romance novel plot.
Now, faced with a bit of adversity, he couldn't handle it. What a weak man!
A man's tears are the least valuable thing.
No matter how much he begged, I remained unmoved.
He looked like a pitiful sight the entire time, even the movers found him annoying and occasionally snapped at him.
Roderick's face was full of shame.
But I had experienced countless humiliations on my way to work.
So, I just watched him indifferently.
He was at a loss, angry but unable to express it, his whole body radiating frustration.
I felt no pity for him, only that he deserved it.
-
I successfully moved out and found a new job.
I had studied art design and found a proper design company to work for.
Gradually, my life got back on track.
Except for the time when Kathryn came to see me once and gave me something, which I threw into the trash.
Roderick's influence on my life had dropped to zero.
I thought my life could finally be peaceful...
But one day after work, a helicopter landed in front of our company, causing a big scene.
The ground was covered with red roses, romantic and beautiful.
Roderick stepped out of the helicopter:
"Alexandra, I know what bothers you. Today, I will publicly acknowledge our relationship and let everyone witness our happiness."
He was dressed in a perfectly tailored suit, holding a huge bouquet of fresh roses, walking step by step towards me.
He took out a diamond ring and knelt on one knee:
"Thank you, fate, for bringing you to me. Let's get married."
Seeing his over-the-top gesture, I wanted to slap him.
But reason held me back.
I took a deep breath and asked him, "What makes you think that what I want is a public acknowledgment?"
