My Secret Billionaire Protector

Author: : Gavin
Genre: Romance
Three years after her fiancé, Ethan Vance, supposedly drowned, Ava Miller finds herself enduring quiet grief at a tech mixer. Suddenly, across the crowded room, she spots him: Ethan, alive, vibrant, and laughing with a new, flashy woman. He shamelessly boasts about faking his death and his "amnesia," making Ava's years of sorrow seem like a cruel joke. Ethan and his new fiancée, Chloe, publicly humiliate Ava, mocking her appearance and implying she's a desperate failure still clinging to the past. When Ava calmly reveals she's married, they sneer, rejecting her simple platinum band and accusing her of being a pathetic liar, especially when she mentions the name Julian Thorne. Things escalate at their lavish wedding where, in a calculated setup, Ava is publicly disgraced, covered in wedding cake. Then, in a shocking display of cruelty, Ethan deliberately stomps on her hand, breaking her finger, while the crowd laughs and calls for her removal. Trapped, humiliated, and in agonizing pain, Ava's desperate plea about her true husband is met with vicious mockery. But just as all hope seems lost, a figure steps through the crowd, holding the hand of a small boy: Julian Thorne himself, and their son, Leo. His icy gaze, fixed on his injured wife and their child, promises an unleashing of power that will redefine everyone's future.

Chapter 1

The noise of the tech mixer was a dull roar in Ava Miller's ears, a sound she'd once found exciting but now just endured.

Three years, it had been three years since Ethan Vance, her fiancé, the golden boy of the local tech scene, supposedly drowned in a boating accident.

People had whispered then, their eyes judging her quiet grief, her lack of public breakdown.

They didn't know.

She scanned the room, a habit now, looking for no one in particular, yet always aware.

Then she saw him.

Ethan.

Alive, laughing, a drink in his hand, looking like he hadn't missed a single day of sunshine.

Her breath caught, just for a second, then her composure, a shield built over three years, slammed back into place.

He was with a woman, blonde, flashy, clinging to his arm like a designer handbag. Chloe Davenport, if Ava remembered the gossip columns correctly.

Ava wore a simple dark dress, her hair pulled back, no makeup. She knew she probably looked like she'd seen better days, a stark contrast to the glittering crowd.

It was an illusion, of course, one she cultivated when necessary.

Ethan hadn't seen her yet. He was holding court, his voice carrying over the din.

"...total amnesia, can you believe it? Woke up on a beach in Costa Rica, no idea who I was. Took months to piece things together, and even then, some parts are just... gone."

Chloe giggled, her eyes flicking around, hungry for attention. "He's so brave, rebuilding his life."

A woman nearby, someone Ava vaguely recognized from Ethan's old circle, said, "Oh, Ethan, it's a miracle you're here. We all mourned you so."

Ava felt a cold knot in her stomach, not of grief, but of something much harder.

She knew about the "amnesia." She knew about Costa Rica. She knew everything, thanks to Julian.

Julian Thorne, Ethan's older step-brother, the reclusive tech mogul, her husband.

Her secret, powerful husband.

And father of their son, Leo.

Ethan's gaze swept the room and landed on her. His smile faltered for a microsecond, then widened into something predatory.

He nudged Chloe. "Well, well, look what the cat dragged in."

They approached, a small entourage of their new friends trailing behind, eager for a show.

"Ava Miller," Ethan said, his voice dripping with false sympathy. "Long time no see. You're looking... well, you're here."

Chloe's eyes raked over Ava, a smirk playing on her lips. "Ethan darling, is this an old... acquaintance?"

"Something like that," Ethan said, his eyes mocking Ava's simple dress. "She used to be quite something, didn't you, Ava? Before, you know." He gestured vaguely, implying her supposed fall from grace after his "death."

One of their friends snickered. "Heard you took his death pretty hard, then just sort of... faded."

Ava met Ethan's gaze, her own calm. "Hello, Ethan. You seem to be doing well."

"Trying to," he said, puffing his chest slightly. "New ventures, new life. Chloe here has been a rock." He squeezed Chloe's arm.

Chloe preened. "It must be so hard for you, Ava, seeing him again after all this time. Especially since you haven't, shall we say, moved on quite as spectacularly."

The group laughed.

Ava's mind was clear, her emotions locked down. Disgust was a mild word for what she felt.

"Actually," Ethan said, leaning in conspiratorially, his breath smelling of expensive whiskey, "I've been thinking. Maybe we could... reconnect. For old times' sake. Discreetly, of course. I wouldn't want to upset Chloe, or your current, ah, situation." He glanced around as if expecting to see her with some equally down-on-his-luck partner.

His offer, so demeaning, so typical of the Ethan she now knew, didn't even make her flinch.

She just looked at him, a faint, unreadable smile on her lips.

Chapter 2

"That's very generous of you, Ethan," Ava said, her voice even, "but I'm married."

A ripple of surprise went through their little group.

Ethan blinked, then threw his head back and laughed, a harsh, disbelieving sound. "Married? You? To who, some charity case you picked up?"

Chloe joined in, her laughter shrill. "Oh, Ava, you always were so... conve
