It's my first day at Raven Shadow's Academy.
Actually, my first night. It's at least seven in the evening now as I gaze at the academy's facade, ecstatic, in awe, and undoubtedly too anxious to begin a new journey in this new place.
The academy's facade was imposing and majestic. The dark stone walls were adorned with intricate details that seemed to unfold like the pages of an ancient book. The windows were tall and framed by heavy dark velvet curtains, giving the academy an air of mystery.
A black marble staircase led to the main entrance, where a carved wooden door stood tall and imposing. I felt small and humble before the grandeur of the building. A path of dark stones stretched to the left and right of the building, illuminated by several iron posts along the entire road. Some benches decorated the path, leading to the end where I knew the dormitories were located.
"Are you sure about this?" I was pulled from my thoughts when my mother's hand rested on my shoulder, her sweet and worried gaze fixed on me. "The people here are..."
"Mom," I cut her off before she could tell me once again how horrible the people studying here were. Rich, spoiled, and powerful kids who don't like being contradicted, or any other insult she wanted to add. She had already warned me about it a million times since I received the admission letter. "It's going to be fine."
She sighed in defeat, pulling me into a suffocating hug, enveloping me in her lavender scent, sniffling once more. She had spent the entire trip whining and saying she didn't want to lose her precious little girl.
"Oh Blair, let the girl go." My father murmured, setting my bags down. "She's an extraordinary girl and will be just fine here."
I looked at my father over my shoulder and gave him a smile, which he returned with a wink. "We can't go any further from here."
"It's okay, I think I can manage." I pulled away from my mother and wiped a solitary tear from her cheek.
"If anything happens, please call us, okay?" she demanded, and I just smiled and nodded. "Anything at all."
"Mom."
"All right, we're leaving." She wiped her hands on her gray dress, trying to hide her nervousness. She was more anxious than I was, but for entirely different reasons.
My father came closer, and I threw myself into his arms, hugging him. "We'll miss you."
"I'll miss you too," I murmured against his neck, trying to hold back my tears. We'd be apart for a long time, and that had never happened before.
I had always stayed at home with them, for as long as I could remember. I had gone out a few times to explore, but after I turned 16, going out was the last thing they let me do. That was the age when my wolf was supposed to awaken, just like the rest of the kids, but that didn't happen. There was nothing, no stronger sense of smell, no better hearing, no sharper vision-things that would have come with my wolf's awakening.
My parents became worried and even thought I was sick, but as the months passed, they realized it wasn't going to change. So they decided it was best for me to study at home, afraid that someone from the outside might start saying things to me or about me that could hurt.
I never cared about what people thought, but for my parents' sake, I did what they wanted. However, I applied to Raven Shadow's College years later after discovering that it was where they had studied, and it was a huge surprise when the admission letter arrived.
I didn't expect it, and I can say my parents didn't either. They supported me after much discussion, and here I was: a seventeen-year-old girl without a wolf, going to study at an elite academy meant for royalty, nobles, the powerful, and the few intelligent and brave enough.
I said goodbye to my parents and walked toward the main building to head to the office. I wasn't the only student arriving; it was the beginning of the season, and all the students who had been home were returning for classes, and it was exciting.
There were people everywhere.
Though I was eager to make friends, I knew I needed to go to the office to announce my arrival and get the information I needed. This was the beginning of a new story I was writing for myself, and I was happy about it.
**
It took longer than I expected, but in the end, I made it. A map, a key, and a dream. That was all I had. They told me to come back tomorrow to pick up my schedule. All I had to do was head to the dormitory and settle in.
I left the main building the same way I entered and noticed that many students were still arriving along the main road. I took a deep breath.
The academy was located in the middle of the capital's forest, a more isolated place away from the rest of the city. We were surrounded by large trees and grass around the main building and dormitories, but there was also a huge wall a few kilometers away at the first entrance. Big enough to prevent anyone from entering-or even leaving.
I followed the path to the left, where the map indicated the dormitories were, holding my bag over my shoulder and getting used to the place. I wasn't sure if it was because night was falling or if the forest was really that sinister at this hour, but I couldn't feel at ease walking beside that darkness, even though there were a few people around as well.
I quickened my pace, turning right and finally seeing the dormitories.
The sense of comfort that place gave me was impressive. There were three buildings, one in the middle, facing the entrance, one on the left side facing the one on the right. Each trio of dormitories had a name: Orion, Ursa, Aquila, and Lyra for the girls. Draco, Hydra, Perseus, and Phoenix for the boys. There was also a building called Pegasus. The map didn't say if it was a girls' or boys' dormitory or what, but I didn't care since mine was the Orion building, the fourth set along the road, and I had no reason to look elsewhere.
In the center, there was a fountain, and along the buildings were flower beds and white flowers everywhere, with two benches in front of each. Each dormitory had at least five floors, and the entrance had a tall wooden door and a small staircase. Between the buildings, there was a narrow space leading to the forest at the back; no doubt it was used as a trail into that place.
Did the students usually walk there? It seemed so.
Orion was the last set of female dormitories. After that, there was a large courtyard with benches and even kiosks for relaxation or whatever the students might do. The kiosks were on the edge of the forest, and without a doubt, you could sit there and enjoy the view from that spot.
My steps became a bit more confident as I resumed walking, eager to see my dorm. The central building was the one I belonged to. I approached slowly, trying to savor every second of this moment, immediately regretting that decision.
"Damn, Reiner, yes, like that!"
I stopped abruptly when I heard more than I should have, my overly curious eyes flying to the side of the dorm to find an unwelcome scene, my smile vanishing from my face.
Not very hidden, a couple stood between the left and central buildings. The girl was pressed against the wall, her face pushed into the red bricks as she moaned, completely unconcerned if anyone could hear. Behind her was a boy, taller than her, one hand on her waist and the other tangled in her dark hair as he moved in and out of her with a certain brutality that made my stomach churn.
It didn't take much intelligence to figure out what they were doing.
I was a little shocked by the scene, barely blinking, dazed. Were they really doing that here?
As if sensing someone was watching, the boy looked in my direction without stopping what he was doing, and I felt my heart race, startled when a malicious smile appeared on his lips as our eyes met. I shuddered.
Was he enjoying being watched?
Did he not care about the other people passing by all the time? Or worse, did the people around me, entering and leaving the dorm, not care about what they were doing?
I quickly averted my gaze before my stomach betrayed me. I didn't want people to think I was looking because I liked watching that...
Just a few hours inside the academy, and I had already seen more than I should have. Not a great way to start.
The warmth of the room embraced me as soon as I slowly opened the door, and I forgot why I had been in such a hurry to get inside as soon as my eyes finally took in the space.
I was immediately captivated by the majesty of the place. The structure, made entirely of white marble, evoked the elegance and grandeur of old houses, transporting me to a time of scholarship and tradition.
The light from the crystal chandelier radiated a soft yellow, bathing the entrance hall in a gentle glow that highlighted the purity of the marble. The floor was polished and cold beneath my feet, emitting a distinct sound with each step I took. There was a double door to my left and another to my right; when a girl gently pushed open one of the doors and stepped out, I could see it was a study room, with numerous bookshelves lining the walls, some tables in the middle, and even a few armchairs.
The white marble staircase in front of me stretched elegantly toward the upper floors, providing a sense of grandeur and magnificence. Each flight of stairs was flanked by intricately carved railings, as if each step was an invitation to an intellectual journey. Next to the base of the stairs were a few marble benches where some students were chatting among themselves, oblivious to the fact that someone else was nearby.
Other than the occasional voice of students around, everything else was incredibly peaceful and quiet, bringing me a sense of peace I didn't know I could feel. I tightened my grip on my bag strap and climbed the stairs, avoiding eye contact with the people hurriedly going up and down. Maybe I'd have time to meet them all one day.
The third floor was where my room was. I entered the hallway and began scanning the solid wooden doors to find mine. Almost at the end, I found it: 82. I bit my lip nervously and took out the key that came with the letter, letting out a relieved sigh I didn't know I had been holding when the door finally opened.
The room wasn't large, like the rest of the place, but it was something I could never take for granted. It was a single room, with a large window on the front wall and a desk. A single bed was against the right wall, just a few inches from the desk. On the left wall, there was a door, likely the bathroom, and just before the door was a simple dark wood dresser. Above the bed, on the wall, was a small shelf for some books. On the floor, a burgundy rug matched the rest of the sheets and curtains.
It was simple, very simple, but at the same time, it represented freedom.
I closed the door behind me and breathed in the scent of pine that the room exuded. This would be my new home for a while, and I needed to settle in, get used to it as quickly as possible.
I placed my suitcase on top of the dresser and opened the drawers to start putting away my clothes and uniforms. Since I didn't bring much, there were some empty drawers left. I placed a photo of me with my parents on my desk and sat on the bed, which was softer than I had imagined.
After the long trip from Eldoria, my parents' home, to here in the capital of Celestia, all I needed was a bath and a good rest, so I grabbed a pair of warm pajamas, my hair products, and headed to the bathroom. It was simple, like the rest of the room: a sink with a cabinet underneath, a mirror on the wall, a toilet beside it, a nearly transparent plastic curtain, and the shower. I got comfortable, took off my clothes, and turned on the shower. The steam from the hot water soon filled the space, relaxing me. I stepped into the water, feeling all my muscles unwind. I had been tense since I got into my parents' car to come here; entering this place didn't make me any less anxious, but I was at peace and happy, very happy.
But my relaxation didn't last long as the hot water gradually started to turn cold, and I had barely begun to wash my hair. Damn.
I turned off the water and wrapped myself in a towel, glaring at the shower, trying to understand what had just happened. Was the hot water limited? This had to be a bad joke. I took a deep breath and stepped out of the bathroom, my hair dripping all over the floor, and my skin covered in goosebumps from the cold air. I needed that bath.
I slowly opened the door to my room and peeked down the hallway to see if anyone was around. Nothing. No one was in the corridors. I stared at the door in front of me for a moment. Had the water run out for everyone? Should I ask?
Glancing around the hallway once more to make sure there was really no one, and clutching my towel tightly against my body, I took a few steps and knocked on the door across from mine, my heart racing. No response. I knocked again, this time a bit louder.
What if no one was there? Damn, I didn't think of that.
Before I could turn away, the door opened, revealing a beautiful girl with almond-shaped eyes and straight black hair, so smooth and perfect that I felt a bit envious. "Hi," I mumbled with an awkward smile. She was so perfectly dressed, and I was just in a towel, my wet hair sticking to my cheek. Definitely not the first impression I wanted to make. "Do you have hot water?"
I was sure my weak smile wasn't giving off the best impression. "It's just that I was taking a shower, and the hot water suddenly ran out." I pointed to the door behind me, trying to ease the awkwardness of the situation. "I'm new, I just arrived."
I knew I was talking too much, one thing after another, but I couldn't help it.
"Oh, sure, sure, come in, please." She gave me a friendly smile and stepped back to let me into her room. It was almost identical to mine, with the same furniture and everything, but the decor was more colorful, with posters of unfamiliar people decorating her walls. There were many photos on her desk and a laptop; her sheets were purple, as was her rug. It was cheerful and cozy, with a fresh orange scent. "Your room must have been out of use for a while. You'll need to speak to the office about that."
"I definitely will." I smiled, feeling a bit embarrassed. "I'm Miyo Sinclair."
"I'm Elara, but you can call me Ella. Nice to meet you, Miyo." It was kind of cute how her eyes smiled with her. I would certainly appreciate it more if I hadn't shivered hard when the cold air from her open window hit me. "Oh, I'm sorry." She hurried to close the window when she noticed my chattering teeth. "Go ahead, here's the bathroom, make yourself at home." She pointed to the door, and I nodded gratefully before heading to the bathroom.
There were some purple crocheted rugs on the floor, even a plant I didn't recognize, but it somehow made the small bathroom feel even cozier. I definitely needed to decorate my room more like this as soon as possible.
I didn't waste any time lingering and quickly finished my shower so I wouldn't inconvenience Ella too much. While I was in the water, I realized she was talking to someone outside, and then there was silence. Maybe I had interrupted some of her plans by being in her room. I dried my hair so I wouldn't drip water everywhere and wrapped myself in the towel again, cursing myself for not bringing my clothes with me.
I opened the door slowly and noticed the room was empty; Elara wasn't there. I felt like an intruder, so I just carefully avoided breaking anything as I made my way out. I opened the door to the hallway and tried to leave, failing miserably.
In my haste, I hadn't noticed someone standing in front of me. He had his back to me, wearing a white long-sleeved shirt. My whole body collided with the wall that he was, and to avoid falling, I grabbed onto the side of his shirt, letting go as soon as I regained my balance. "Damn," I whispered, rubbing my sore nose and looking up to see who had gotten in my way.
My jaw nearly hit the floor when he turned around, and his golden eyes met mine, eyes so beautiful and sweet that they almost made me melt. His face had a confused and troubled expression, his light gray eyebrows furrowed. His hair was also a pale gray, and his jawline was perfectly chiseled, though his cheeks were a bit round. His nose was pointed, and his lips full and pink.
"Who are you?" His raspy voice hit me, and an unfamiliar heat flushed my face. Damn, he looked like a damn angel.
I blinked a few times, dazed, feeling disoriented as I looked at his face, but I snapped back to reality when his eyes moved down, scanning me from head to toe, furrowing his brows even more when he looked back into my eyes. Was he blushing?
I followed his gaze slowly and realized what he had been looking at. I was wearing a towel. JUST A TOWEL!
A towel that wasn't very large, to my dismay.
My eyes widened, and I felt my heart race. "Oh my god," I whispered, feeling my face heat up even more as the realization that I was standing in front of this guy with only a towel wrapped around me hit me like a truck.
I quickly brushed past him, not at all delicately, bumping into his arm, and dashed into my room, closing the door behind me. My heart was pounding so fast it hurt as I leaned against the door, trying to steady myself and regain my senses, which were all scrambled and shaken by the embarrassment I was feeling.
What was he doing here? Wasn't this dorm supposed to be for girls only? Did he have permission to be here?
So many questions and no answers, leaving me even more anxious and nervous.
I peeked through the peephole in the door, and to my surprise, he was still there, standing. Now he was leaning against the wall, looking at my door, his expression serious yet confused, clearly lost in a million thoughts in his own head.
In the privacy of my room, I could now take a good look at him from head to toe without seeming like a complete idiot. Though, deep down, I was sure he had already formed a terrible opinion of me.
His arms were crossed over his chest. His shirt was open, and only now did I realize it was part of the academy uniform. The crest of the wolf and moon was on his chest. Underneath, he wore a simple white tank top, along with the light brown uniform pants. He looked like he had dressed in a hurry, not caring which pieces he grabbed. Even so, he looked hot as hell.
His hair wasn't styled conventionally like the others; it fell over his eyes like a messy fringe, similar to mine, covering part of his gorgeous eyes. He seemed so lost. What could be bothering him?
"I told you, you didn't have to wait." I looked toward Ella, who had returned from wherever she had gone, now standing in front of him, blocking my view of his slim body. He looked at her, his gaze softening as he did. "Here." She handed him something I couldn't see, as she was in the way. "Please be careful."
The careful look he gave her as he nodded, along with the sweet smile, made my heart melt. He must be her boyfriend. It made sense for a beautiful girl like her to have such a handsome boyfriend. "I owe you for this."
"Just come back before classes start," she softly demanded, and I felt a little guilty for eavesdropping on their conversation. I shouldn't even be here. I should be dressed and lying in bed, ready to sleep. But I couldn't move; it was as if my body had a mind of its own, and all it wanted was to watch this guy for a little longer.
"Who was the girl in your room?" My heart raced again when he nodded toward my door, showing it to Ella.
"Oh, she' s already out?" Ella looked toward my door as well, and I almost felt like they could see me there, spying on them. "She's a new student. Her hot water ran out, so I let her use my shower."
"Hm," he nodded briefly, pushing away from the wall and casually shoving his hands in his pockets. He was taller than I had noticed before. "Be careful with the people you let into your life again, Ella."
What? What was he implying with that? "I can take care of myself, Rowan." Her voice had a hint of sharpness, but maybe it was just my imagination. Why would she be rude to her boyfriend?
Rowan. He had a beautiful name. It somehow suited him.
"I don't need your advice." He sighed, watching her go into her room and slam the door behind her without bothering to close it softly, clearly showing her mood.
His expression grew a little sad as he watched where she had gone, but then he looked back at my door, and I couldn't decipher the serious look he directed at it. But it made my heart race. I backed away from the peephole before I could see him leave, moving away from the door slowly, feeling my breathing grow heavy and suffocating.
He had been looking at the door with such intensity that it felt like he was looking straight at me, as if there was no door between us. There were endless questions in his face, in his eyes. Questions that I didn't know the answers to.
And I shouldn't care. I didn't know him, and after the embarrassment I experienced today, I didn't want to know him.
I finished getting ready before I could embarrass myself further and lay down, ready to sleep and start a new day tomorrow. A new chapter in my story.
I woke up with sunlight hitting my face and groaned as I remembered I hadn't closed the curtains before sleeping. Since I had fallen asleep earlier than expected, I was well-rested when I got up, so I decided it was time to enter the academy, get to know the place, and, most importantly, find something to eat. My stomach was begging for it.
I grabbed my uniform from the top drawer and got dressed. A light brown plaid skirt, which stopped about five fingers above my knee, a long-sleeved white blouse, and a black vest with the academy's crest on the left chest. I combed my hair with my fingers, adjusting my fringe as well, though it didn't make much of a difference. I looked out at the sky and noticed it was cloudy, so I put on a pair of white tights, which didn't stand out much against my skin since I was just as pale.
Being cooped up at home with my parents had its effects.
I slipped on my loafers, grabbed my glasses, my phone, and left the room slowly.
The hallway was empty and silent; most people were probably still asleep, I guess. I descended the stairs slowly, admiring the structure around me. I was never going to get tired of looking at it. There were already a few people moving back and forth inside the dormitory, all too busy with their own problems.
The fresh morning breeze soon hit my face, and I couldn't help but shiver with excitement. It smelled fresh, a freshness I didn't feel at home; it was different and good.
I approached the empty kiosk in the nearby courtyard, enjoying the fresh wind blowing against my face, making the tree leaves dance, and I stared into the forest for a while. The morning light had already broken through the sky, yet it was still a bit dark inside the forest.
Something about it was comforting, like a refuge for noisy minds. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, taking a moment to familiarize myself with it. The sound of the wind passing through the trees, the rustling of the leaves in the branches, like a calming song, all of it drowned out the growing sound of voices around me. People waking up, getting up to start another season.
It was as if I connected with nature...
I quickly opened my eyes when I heard the sound of dry leaves moving on the ground, a sign of someone approaching, and to my surprise, there he was. Rowan was there. He was only wearing pants, no shirt or shoes.
I held my breath, surprised.
He was a few meters away, but I could clearly see his defined and beautiful torso, his large and strong arms, his broad chest, and his perfectly sculpted Adonis belt that left much to the imagination as it reached the waistband of his pants. I shouldn't be thinking about that!
I blinked a few times to see if this was real, feeling my heart race so fast I could hear it. He was emerging from the edge of the forest as if it were the most normal thing in the world while putting on a white tank top, a piece of clothing that made his body look ridiculously bigger.
I hadn't seen many young men in my life due to my parents' restrictions, but without a doubt, Rowan was sculpted by the gods; his beauty was otherworldly.
Seemingly sensing my presence, his eyes found mine, and his steps gradually slowed until he stopped, staring at me shamelessly.
I exhaled, feeling my heart pound. Why was he so serious? Why was he staring at me?
Maybe because I had been staring at him, again... Oh Goddess!
He started walking again, but this time in my direction.
Oh shit, shit, shit! Was he going to confront me or something?
I quickly fled before he could reach me, finding my way back inside the academy as fast as I could. What was I going to say if he asked why I was staring at him so much? And if he was mad? I had never fought with anyone in my life, and I doubted I could win a fight against someone almost twice my size.
