Chapter 1 The Encounter

Isabella Hughes stood at the rooftop bar, holding a glass of champagne. The city skyline sparkled in the distance. It was beautiful, but it felt overwhelming tonight. She'd spent years climbing her way up in the city, but now, up on that rooftop, she felt a bit lost.

The gala was meant to celebrate her company's successes. Izzy was usually great at working a room. But tonight, it felt like the crowd was closing in on her. Laughter and chatter filled the air, blending into a loud noise that made her want to slip away.

She sipped her drink and let her eyes wander around the party. That's when she spotted him.

He was leaning against the wall, looking incredibly cool in a fitted suit. His dark hair framed a strong face, with a sharp jaw and eyes that seemed to draw people in without him trying. He wasn't mingling like everyone else. He seemed completely at ease.

When their eyes met, everything else faded away for a moment. His gaze was strong, almost as if he could see right through her. For a second, Izzy felt an odd connection. Then, he smiled a little, and her heart raced.

Who was this guy? Why did it feel like he knew her, even though they'd never met?

Feeling a bit uneasy, Izzy quickly turned away. She didn't come here to deal with mysterious guys. Her career had taught her to stay in control. She wasn't about to let some charming stranger rattle her.

But fate had other plans, it seemed.

Not having fun? he asked. His voice was deep and smooth. It came from behind her.

Startled, she almost spilled her drink. When she turned around, he was standing so close she could see every detail of his face. He was even more attractive up close, and the scent of his cologne made her a little lightheaded. It felt like he could read her thoughts.

"I'm having a great time," she said, putting on her best professional smile. "And you are?"

"I'm David," he said, with that same hint of a smile. "And you?"

"Izzy," she replied.

"Nice to meet you, Izzy. You looked deep in thought."

"I was admiring the skyline," she said, pointing toward the lights.

David didn't look at the view. Instead, his focus stayed on her. "It is a nice view," he said, with a playful tone.

She blushed at the meaning behind his words. It annoyed her how easily he made her feel flustered. His presence felt like it shifted everything around her.

Suddenly, a loud crash interrupted their conversation. Someone had dropped a tray, causing everyone to turn and look for a moment. When she turned back to speak with David, he had vanished into the crowd.

Izzy searched the room, but he was nowhere to be found. It felt like he had disappeared. Frustrated but curious, she finished her champagne and stepped back into the sea of people.

As the evening went on, she couldn't shake the feeling that her encounter with David meant something more. Something about him lingered in her mind.

When she finally left the party, the cool night air felt refreshing. Her driver waited by the curb, but just as she walked toward the car, she caught sight of something in her side view. She spun around, her heart racing.

David stood across the street, hands in his pockets. He didn't move or call out to her. Just stood there, watching her with a look she couldn't read.

Before she could decide whether to cross to him or head to her car, a passing car blocked her view. When it moved, David had vanished.

Izzy felt puzzled and intrigued. Who was this David? Why did he keep appearing in her life? The way they had met sparked a mix of nervousness, curiosity, and an undeniable spark between them. It was clear that this was just the beginning of something unexpected.

Chapter 2 A second Glance

The sun streamed in through the big windows of Izzy's office. It was a bright morning, but Izzy wasn't in the mood to write a press release. Her thoughts drifted, again and again, to one person-David.

David.

She didn't like how much he occupied her mind. It felt like a catchy song stuck on repeat. Who was he? What did he want? And why did it seem like he understood her? It wasn't fair. They had barely talked, yet he had made a mark on her that was hard to shake off.

"Earth to Izzy!" came a cheerful voice, breaking in on her thoughts.

It was her best friend and coworker, Chloe Bennett. She leaned against the door frame with a teasing smile. Chloe was everything Izzy wasn't. She was bold, carefree, and always curious about others.

"What's with the daydreaming look?" Chloe asked, striding into the office. She plopped down on the couch, clearly ready for a chat.

"Daydreaming?" Izzy said, quickly typing some random letters to seem busy. "I'm just... focused."

"Focused on what? Daydreaming about some tall, handsome guy from the gala?" Chloe asked with a knowing grin.

Izzy sat still, fingers resting on the keyboard. "What are you talking about?"

"Oh, come on!" Chloe rolled her eyes. "You were all googly-eyed over him! You looked like you were melting right there."

"I was not melting!" Izzy shot back, but her cheeks told the truth with a slight redden.

"Sure! Keep telling yourself that. Who was he?"

"I have no clue," Izzy sighed. "We didn't exactly chat about our lives."

"Well, you should have asked for his number! He's probably the funnest thing that has happened to you in ages," Chloe teased.

Izzy glared at her friend, but deep down, she knew Chloe wasn't entirely off base.

Before Chloe could get more playful, Izzy's phone buzzed. She grabbed it gratefully. It was her assistant reminding her about the afternoon meeting with a new client.

"Duty calls," she said, escaping Chloe's teasing look. "Catch you later!"

The meeting was at a fancy café in town. It was a spot where the rich and stylish liked to hang out. Izzy got there early and found a quiet corner table. She ordered a latte and looked around. She was ready to take notes.

And then, she saw him.

David was sitting a few tables away. He seemed relaxed, reading a newspaper. His dark eyes moved across the pages like he had not a care in the world.

Izzy felt her heart race. Should she go over and say hi? Or just ignore him? Before she could make up her mind, David looked up.

Their eyes connected, and time seemed to stand still. He didn't smile, but there was something in his gaze. There was a challenge, a question, or maybe a hint of recognition.

Izzy took a deep breath and decided to stay at her table. She didn't want him to think she was bothered. But as she pretended to take notes, she couldn't help but steal glances at him.

Just then, the waitress came over with another latte.

"I didn't order this," Izzy said, confused.

"It's from the gentleman over there," she answered, pointing at David.

Her stomach flipped. Izzy glanced at him, and he raised his cup, as if toasting her. A warm heat crept up her neck, and she fought to keep calm. She wanted to march over and ask him what he was doing, but just then, her client arrived, pulling her thoughts in another direction.

The meeting felt blurry. Izzy tried to remain professional, but her mind kept wandering back to David. He left right in the middle of it, without even saying goodbye. By the end, she felt both frustrated and distracted.

When she stepped outside, the cool air wasn't enough to calm her racing mind. She was about to call a cab when a familiar voice stopped her.

"Miss Hughes."

She turned around, and there he was, leaning against a lamppost, looking relaxed. His dark eyes were locked on her.

"David," she replied, trying to keep her guard up. "Are you following me?"

"Maybe," he said, a small smile playing on his lips. "Or maybe it's just fate."

Chapter 3 Unspoken Invitations

Izzy crossed her arms and glared at David. The city buzzed around them, but to her, it felt like they were the only two people in the world.

"Fate?" she said, her voice dripping with doubt. "You don't seem like someone who leaves it all to chance."

David moved a bit closer. "Maybe not. But what about you? Do you believe in coincidences?"

Izzy's heart raced, and she took a step back. "I care about boundaries. And you're too close for comfort."

He laughed, a low sound that sent a chill down her spine. "You didn't mind last night."

"That was different," she shot back, annoyed how easily he got under her skin. "And if you think you can just-"

"Relax, Izzy," he interrupted. "I'm not trying to make you uncomfortable. Just wanted to say hi."

"Mission accomplished," she said coolly, even though her cheeks were slightly flushed.

David studied her, his eyes sharp. "You're not used to being off balance, are you?"

"Is that what you think this is?" she challenged, raising her chin. "A power move?"

He smiled, but there was something off about it. "Not really. I'm just curious about you."

"Curiosity killed the cat," she joked, trying to hide her tension.

"But satisfaction brought it back," he shot back, glancing at her lips before meeting her eyes again.

A heavy silence filled the space between them, packed with unsaid feelings. Izzy hated how her heart raced. She didn't know this guy, but he made her feel both exposed and alive.

"Well, if you're done being curious, I have to go," she said, trying to sound calm.

"Sure," David said, stepping aside with a flourish. "I wouldn't want to hold you up."

As she walked away, she felt his gaze on her back, almost like a brand. She told herself not to look back, but when she reached the corner, she couldn't help it.

He was still there, leaning against the lamppost, watching her with that annoying mix of amusement and intrigue. This time, he tipped an imaginary hat, smirking like he knew he was getting to her.

---

Later that evening, Izzy sat in her apartment, unable to shake off the memory of their encounter. She tried to focus on work, sip wine, and even binge-watch reality TV, but nothing worked. David's voice and smile kept creeping back into her mind.

Her phone buzzed, jolting her from her thoughts. She picked it up, hoping for anything to distract her. It was a text from Chloe.

Chloe: "Any mystery men send coffee your way today? ;)"

Izzy sighed, fighting the urge to toss her phone across the room. Instead, she typed a quick response, brushing off her friend's jokes. But as she laid her phone down, she couldn't help but wonder what David was up to right then.

Was he thinking about her too?

Across town, David sat in a dim bar, a whiskey in hand. His mind was far away, lost in thoughts of Izzy. There was something about her that made him want to know more.

His phone buzzed, pulling him from his thoughts. He looked at the screen. It was a message from an unknown number.

Unknown: "We need to talk. Don't forget who you are."

David's jaw tightened. His grip on the glass became tense. For a moment, darkness flashed across his face. Then he exhaled, set the phone down, and knocked back his drink.

Izzy turned off the lights and crawled under her covers, hoping sleep would take her away. But even in the dark, her mind wouldn't let go of David-his voice, his eyes, how he made everything feel shaky.

Meanwhile, in another part of the city, David stared out at the night. His face was hard to read, filled with a mix of want and worry.
