Chapter 1 Beginning

Mila POV

"You know when you enjoy the darkness so much, that waking up to the light knowing it held all your problems in its hands was the least of your worries."

I didn't want to face my pathetic life, where I had to struggle to make ends meet in order to take care of my mom and my sister.

"But like every good thing it had to come to an end as I couldn't stay here in this darkness forever. Hearing a loud bang on my door.

"Would you get up from that bed? Mila!" I soon heard my mom's voice scream as I gradually opened my eyes to the light.

"Mila, you know you can't be late for this interview today? So get up your lazy butt and go get ready!" she continued to bang on my door.

"Hesitantly, I managed to get up from my bed and I went straight to open the door for my mom who was now yelling at the top of her lungs.

"Mom, why are you yelling so loudly?" I scolded her as I rubbed my already heavy eyes.

"Mila, what is wrong with you? Do you want to miss this interview?" she asked in anger with her arms crossed.

"But Mom... this one will be just another rejection like the rest of them! I'm just so tired of all this rejection Mom... they are always saying I don't have any working experience. How will I get one if no one freaking employs me?" I groaned out in frustration.

"Sweetie, I know how you feeling, but you can't know if you don't try honey." she said in a comforting tone as she stroked my hair gently.

"But...." I wanted to protest but I was cut off.

"Mila, dear, this might just be it okay........ and remember we need the money. Anyways, if it doesn't work out, you always have your job at the 'Drink and cookies Coffee shop'" she said smiling with her eyes telling me it was going to be alright.

Seeing the comfort and concern in her eyes, I knew I had to do this. Not for me, really, but for my mom and sister. I had to provide for them and give them a better life, as my job at the coffee shop couldn't meet up with the bills which are gradually building up day by day.

So, I quickly took a shower and got ready. I hurried down the stairs and into the kitchen to have a quick breakfast before heading out.

"Good morning, Millie!" my younger sister greeted me with all smiles.

"Lila....... when are you ever going to get my name right for once?!" I scolded her with a playful little tap on her cheeks.

Lila immediately rolled her eyes at me, as she went back to her food murmuring.

Ignoring her constant grumbling, I quickly had a bowl of cereals and an apple, as I was about to leave trying to kiss Lila good bye I said:

"Get to school on time, okay?" I whispered to her as I kissed her forehead softly.

"As if going to school helped you, Sis." she said sarcastically as she immediately smiled widely waving me good bye.

Swallowing a lump in my throat, although I knew she was right. After all my years in school with Student Loan left to pay, I ended up a barista in a local coffee shop with no company willing to hire me.

Taking in a deep breath, I internally asked the universe to help me this time, because, my mind can't take anymore rejection.

Leaving the house, I quickly took the next available train to the other side of the town with my heart still beating so loudly in my chest.

Soon enough, after so many public transports, I was at the company. I kept my fingers crossed with hopes that I get this job this time.

The receptionist received me warmly, as she led me to in office where the interview was going to be held. I waited patiently with the nerves threatening to choke me.

Few moments later, a beautiful blonde hair lady walked in looking all classy in her all-black dress and heels, as every sound her heels made on the ceramic tiles caused a chaos in my heart.

"Mila Brown?" She asked as she looked at me with an intimidating glare.

"Ye...... Yes...." I stuttered as I cleared my throat nervously.

"Great...!" She said smiling as she went back to focus on the pieces of paper in her hand.

Moments had passed by and still no word from her. Only a soft glance she often gave me.

A few minutes later and still nothing from her. Finally, she cleared her throat looking up

"Miss Brown......." she took a momentary pause as she glared at me intensely. "I'm very sorry, but we cannot offer you this job, at the moment. You lack the experience." she said with a stern expression on her face.

Her words broke me yet again, as I just couldn't contain my anguish.

"No.... Miss. You can't say that. I'm more than qualified for this position... Please, I need this job!" I pleaded holding on to her tightly.

"Miss Brown, I'm sorry, it's out of my hands. Please, do see yourself out." she said pointing to the door.

"No...!" I screamed.

"This is my last and only chance. You can't just throw me out for no just reason! Do you know how much I need this job?" I screamed in rage. I didn't just know what came over me as I started destroying and scattering the whole office screaming like a mad woman. Before I knew it the security came in and I was carried out forcefully from the building.

Consumed with the feeling of rejection and pain, I felt like my world was collapsing right before my eyes and I couldn't do anything about it.

With tears flowing freely down my eyes and the anguish eating deep into my soul, I became oblivious to everything and everyone around me as I walked on the busy street so absent minded.

Still walking in a pathetic world of my own, I unconsciously crossed the road as I was brought back to reality by the sound of a car coming to a stop.

"Are you crazy? I would have ran you over Missy!" I soon heard a masculine voice say as I turned around looking up at him.

And damn, he has those eyes that you never wanted to look away from.

"What's your problem? Do you have a death wish or something?" he was about to scold me but I didn't give him to chance to, as I turned my back immediately walking swiftly away from him.

............................................................

I didn't think of going back home. I went straight to my only income job. Walking into the coffee shop with a downcast look on my face, I went out back to get changed.

"Mila, you are quite early for your shift don't you think?" my best friend Maya said as she came to give me a huge hug.

Nodding my head in response, I couldn't just bring myself to respond, as a lot of mixed emotions were currently churning inside of me.

Maybe Maya saw the depressed look on my face or the tears at the corner of my eyes, but she pulled me into a tight and comforting hug.

"Another rejection?" Maya asked softly, as I nodded a yes in response.

"Don't worry Mila, there is always a next time, okay?" she continued stroking my hair gently.

"Maya, I don't think anyone would be willing to employ me at this point, and I just can't take another rejection from any company. So, I think this where I draw the line. I'm done Maya.... I'm done...." I said walking away to attend a customer.

After few hours of handing out coffees and cookies, I decided to get off my feet. I was about to leave, Maya rushed to me pulling me to the back.

"I have got it Mila!" Maya said with so much optimism laced in her voice.

"Maya what now?" I said, rolling my eyes at her.

Smiling widely, Maya handed me her tablet to have a look. Just look at this... the solution to your problem!" she squealed in excitement.

Not in the mood for her jokes, I reluctantly looked down at her screen.

"Mila Brown, looking for a job as a personal assistant." I saw an already set up job profile on Maya tablet screen.

Shocked beyond words, I immediately turned to Maya asking "Maya, what is this all about for goodness sake?" I cried out loud.

"Oh Mila, ...... I just realized what you were doing wrong, since ever! and that was... not applying for a lesser position that doesn't require you to have experience!" she replied smiling.

"But..." I tried to protest.

"No Mila, you need to start from the ground and work your way up. So, this is the best way you can do for now so, just accept it." she muttered lowly.

Seeing her point as I knew I had no other options, I agreed to her plan as we both set up the rest of the job profile.

Walking back to attend to more customers, I couldn't help but to allow myself to drift back to that incident on the road.

I just couldn't stop myself from thinking about him.

The man with the perfect silver-grey eyes.

Asking myself incessantly:

'Who he might be...?'

Chapter 2 The Job

Mila pov

Months passed by so quickly and there was nothing from the job profile Maya had set up for me. I was gradually losing hope of ever finding something better than this job I'm currently working at.

As always, I went for my afternoon shift at the coffee shop and I dreaded every moment I had to spend there.

"Good Afternoon, Maya!" I greeted her, as I walked into the shop and went straight to get all set up.

"Mila, darling, how are you this fine sunny day?" Maya replied with all smiles on her face.

"I'm good." I nodded in response feeling quite suspicious of Maya's weird happiness.

"Maya... What are you up to?" I asked her as I scanned her face for my own answers.

"Nothing Mila...... Can't I be just happy today?" Maya replied nervously as she went back to making coffee.

Knowing something was definitely up, I decided to ignore it, as I went to get started on work.

But I couldn't just concentrate, as I could hear Maya consistent groaning, as if she was having some kind of internal battle within her.

I tried my possible best to ignore her but I just couldn't any longer as I turned to her looking at her with a concern look in my eyes.

"Maya......!" I called out for her as I knew deep down that she wanted so badly to tell me something.

Maya soon looked up at me her eyes showing remorse.

"Maya...... What's the matter with you?" I asked looking straight at her with my arms crossed.

Instantly there was an indescribable silence between us, as Maya looked at me, her hands fidgeting with her apron.

"Maya.......!" I softly yelled out her name.

"Fine Mila.......... A friend of mine told me today about an opening, so I kind of got you an interview at Harris Construction Company, next Thursday." She said out loud.

"What........?" Hearing those words put me in absolute shock.

'Me...? Go to an interview at Harris Construction Company...? No, I just can't. Going there is like walking into the lion's den.... God! I have heard stories about that place.' I cried to myself.

"Mila, I know what you are thinking, but all that doesn't matter, okay? You are more than qualified to work there and all you need to know is this. This was the only opening in months, Mila! So you have to take it whether you like it or not, Ok?" Maya said with a stern expression on her face.

"But Harris Construction Company? They are like the biggest shot around here. Do you think they would want to hire someone like me?" I tried to protest.

"Oh! My goodness, Mila! You can't know if you don't try, sweetie!" Maya tried to reassure me.

"But......" I tried to protest again.

"Stop! OK...... you are going and that is final! Because you don't know who I had to screw to get you that spot at that interview." She ordered as she ignored me and went back to work leaving me to battle my thoughts on my own.

........................................................

The days flew by and in no time, it was already Thursday, and time for my interview at the prestigious Harris Construction Company.

I couldn't sleep all night long, as different thoughts and emotions ran wild in my mind. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought, I would get an interview at Harris Construction Company and now I'm only hours away from getting a job there.

My mom, who was beyond excited and happy, came knocking at my door, as always, urging me to get ready on time while Maya sent me her best wishes telling me she was going to cover for me at the coffee shop, as I had an early morning shift.

Already dressed and ready, I looked into the mirror, mentally preparing myself for what to come.

"I can do this!" I told myself incessantly, as I took a deep breath.

So, I quickly had my breakfast and rushed out of my house praying to the universe that this time it would be different.

It took me almost half an hour to get to the Harris Construction Company.

I took a deep breath looking up at the tall building in front of me.

Closing my eyes, I mentally willed me to walk through those doors, as the nerves were threatening to choke me to death. It took everything within me to walk through those doors, as I went straight for the brunette receptionist sit across the counter.

"Hello! My name is Mila Brown, I'm here for the interview." I said trying to act as confident as possible.

Nodding her head, the brunette-haired receptionist soon points me in the direction of where the interview was going to be held.

Shivering in pure fright, as the nerves were gradually eating deep within me, I kept my fingers crossed with hope that this time wouldn't be like the rest.

Talking my seat, as I waited for my turn, I consciously scanned the office admiring it's beautiful setting with all it's expensive light and painting.

I was so engrossed in the beauty of this place that I didn't know when I was being called in.

"Miss Brown.......?" The secretary called out for me, as I was immediately brought back to reality.

Nodding my head in response, I smiled back at her as I quickly rushed into the office.

Looking up at the Lady who was seated and extremely focused on her computer, I smiled greeting and answering all her question as efficiently as possible.

"Miss Brown, that would be all for now, we would be in touch." She finally let out after so many minutes of silence.

"OK, thank you." I murmured in response, as I was not sure of what to make of that statement.

'Was is this a good sign or a bad sign......? Other companies that had interviewed me, told me up front that they hated me, so I didn't really know what to make of this.' I said to myself as I walked out of the company and went straight to the coffee shop.

Walking into the shop, Maya was there with so much optimism and hope written all over her, as she was obviously waiting for news about my interview.

"So...?" she asked, urging me to tell her everything.

"They told me they would keep in touch." I said as I could see her face fall in an instant.

"So, we wait then!" she said, trying to be hopeful.

...........................................

The days go by so quickly and still nothing from them. Every day that passes, each phone call fells like it could be the special one.

Maya told me not to lose hope that she was confident that I was going to get this one, but who could know these things, maybe luck was not on my side, as always.

So, I put all my energy into my work at the coffee shop, as I tried to drown out all the negative thoughts that are threatening to choke me.

Maya and I was discussing about her latest male conquest when I heard my phone ring. Immediately a thousand and one thoughts ran through my mind.

'Maybe this is the call I have been waiting for? or maybe it is my commitments asking for the debt I owed them?" I asked myself over and over again. Reluctantly I pick up my phone to answer it softly.

"Mila Brown speaking." I murmured softly through the phone as I my heart beats deafened in anticipation.

What I hear seconds later instantly puts a smile on my face, as I jumped and squealed in excitement.

"Thank you so much!" I said happily, as I couldn't contain my joy.

Ending the call, I turned to Maya with all smiles on my face, as she became curious of what I was so happy about.

"What got you all excited and happy?" she asked curiously.

"I got it Maya......! I got the job at Harris Construction Company!!" I screamed and jumped in excitement.

"Oh! My goodness Mila! I knew you would get it!!" Maya said happily as she jumped along with me.

Finally, I just knew deep down that this would be a start of a new adventure and I just couldn't wait...

Chapter 3 Harris construction

Mila POV...

I woke up quite early as the excitement did not allow me to sleep a wink, today was my first day at Harris Construction and I was beyond excited.

I quickly had my shower and got ready wearing an all-black dress.

I hurriedly ran down the stairs as I went to the kitchen to make myself something to eat.

I was so engrossed in my meal I almost didn't hear my phone ding, as I looked at it and saw it was a text from Maya, wishing me luck on my first day and every word she wrote brought a smile to my face.

I felt so positive that my day was going to be great and nothing could stop me now.

Stepping out of the house, I took a bus to the other side of town where the company was.

As I Inched closer to the company, I suddenly became consumed with feelings of doubt and uncertainty as many unanswered questions hovered endlessly in my head.

Taking a deep breath, I mentally prepare myself as I walked into the office with my head held high.

Walking up to the receptionist, I greeted her with a smile on my face.

"Hello! Good morning! How many I help you?" she replied with a smile on her face.

"I'm Mila Brown here to start the job." I replied nervously.

Nodding her head in an instant, she typed on her computer non-stop, as I stood there consumed with my own nerves.

Moments later she raised her head smiling at me.

"You have to take the elevator on your left to the 10th floor, Marie is waiting to take you to where you need to go." she ordered.

Nodding my head, confused beyond words I took the elevator on my left as I was instructed.

Reaching to the 10th floor, a girl with the most amazing shoes rushed to me pulling me to herself.

"Hi! I'm Marie!" she greeted smiling.

"Mila Brown." I replied, still so nervous.

"So, I'm going to show you to your new work space. You are going to be Mr. Harris personal assistant." Marie said pulling me to pick up the pacing.

Hearing her words made me weak in the knees, as the tension I was feeling went from a 50 to a 100.

"What? Do you mean like... the owner of the company?" I asked with trembling lips.

"Yeah...." Mila smiled as she pulled me into the elevator. "Mr. Harris former assistant retired. She was getting too old to work, so you are here to take her place." Marie said, as the elevator door opened and we stepped into the most beautiful office side I have ever seen.

I was so mesmerized by the beauty of the place, that I tried hard to keep my composure, as Marie took me to the only office there.

"Sir......" Marie called out to the person seated there.

The chair soon turned around facing us and seated there was an elderly man, maybe in his early 60's staring back at us.

"Marie, what do you have for me?" he said standing up to pour himself a cup of coffee.

"Sir....... We got you a new assistant." she said

"Humm... finally it was about time." he continued walking up to us giving me a hand shake.

"And what is your name?" he asked.

"Mila Brown." I said smiling.

"Well Mila, it is so good to get the chance to work with you. Marie would show you to your desk after you have signed the necessary agreement." he said smiling as he walked back to his seat.

Nodding a thank you, Marie took me to sign the agreement and also showed me my work space.

"Now, you are good to start, lunch is by 2pm at the cafeteria downstairs, so, if you need anything or you're just bored, don't hesitate to call me. Here is my number." She said writing down her number.

"Thank you, Marie." I nodded saying, as I looked down the loads of work left on the table.

I quickly texted Maya telling her everything was going great, as I continued to settle down in my new job.

"Working at the Harris Construction was a dream, as Mr. Harris was the best boss anyone could think of. He was like a father to me and I was starting to feel more comfortable here.

6 months later

It's been 6 months working here and everything was beyond perfect

Marie and I became very close friends and Mr. Harris is the best boss anyone could ask for. My work life was going great but neither did I know that everything was about to change.

"Mila, can you come to my office, please?" Mr. Harris called out for me.

Quickly I rushed to his office not wanting to keep him waiting.

"Yes Sir, you called for me?" I answered saying.

"Yes, Mila. As you know, it's almost the end of the year so, I need you to start the arrangements for the end of year company's party. Marie and Jolie will assist you in doing so, since it is your first one." He said dismissing me immediately.

Nodding in agreement, I walked out quickly and immediately texted Marie. Almost instantly Marie was at my desk squealing in excitement.

"Mr. Harris doesn't just give this task to just anybody, as the end of year party is a huge deal here so, we need to bring our 'A' game. Jolie would meet us up at our usual place to discuss." Marie said with excitement laced in her voice.

The preparations for the party with Marie and Jolie was fun and also exhausting, as it was finally time for the party.

Maya insisted on going with me, so we went shopping for new dresses.

.......................................................................

"Maya! Hurry up! We are going to be late!" I yelled to my best friend who was taking too long to get ready.

"I'm done, okay? You don't need to scream my name!" Maya replied as she walked down the stairs.

"Finally!" I sighed in relief as we both took a taxi to the party.

Getting there, the company was filled with people of different kinds, eating, drinking and talking to each other.

The decorations came out amazing, just like I had pictured them.

Marie soon came up to us with a drink in her hand.

"Mila! We did it!" She squealed in excitement, as she handed me a glass.

Smiling and nodding my head, I introduced Maya to Marie and before I knew it, they were good friends.

The night went on smoothly, as we talked and ate all through the night.

Soon enough, Mr. Harris took the stage to make his special speech.

"Good day everyone! Most of you might know me but for those that do not, I'm Mr. George Harris, CEO of Harris Construction and I would like to welcome you all here today!" He said which was followed by the guest clapping.

"So, before we raise our glasses, I would like to make a little announcement.

"I, Mr. George Harris, am retiring from the company." He said and there was absolute silence in the room.

Everyone was shocked, including me, 'Mr. Harris didn't mention to me that he was retiring' I asked myself confused.

"I know everyone is surprised about this new development, but I'm not leaving you without a CEO. My son, Angel, will be taking over my position as CEO the new working year." He said those words and I froze.

I have never seen Mr. Harris son before, but I had heard all those rumours about his rebellious attitudes.

In an instant, my heart started beating fast in uncertainty, as so many unwanted thoughts came to play so freely in my head.

And there and then, I knew nothing would ever be the same again.
