My Life, A Perfect Scam

Author: : Alexis
Genre: Romance
My life as a rising star in software development was predictable, good. Then the Affinity Gauge appeared, numbers hovering above everyone's heads, revealing their true feelings for me. My college sweetheart, Chloe, charming and affectionate, always told me how much she leaned on me, especially after her wealthy adopted family found their biological daughter. I poured thousands into "her foster mother's medical bills" and "her childhood friend's 'vocational' tuition," believing it was all for our future, our marriage. Despite my love, her Affinity Gauge stubbornly read a stark, unbelievable 0. I told myself it was a glitch, until I overheard her in a cafe. "That five thousand Ethan gave me barely covered Mrs. Gable's retainer for the month's act!" she'd hissed. Her friend, Liam, added, "We need to push for the big one, the six-figure investment, then you dump him." My world tilted, the 0 above her head blazing into terrifying clarity. The woman I loved, the future I envisioned, was a meticulously crafted lie. I watched them, Liam flashing designer everything, Chloe playing the innocent victim, their intimacy undeniable. Their demands escalated, a fabricated medical emergency the final straw. My affection curdled into a cold, grim resolve. How could I have been so blind, so stupid? The betrayal cut deep, but the Gauge had been right all along, a cruel, undeniable truth. The sheer audacity of their fraud, the hundreds of thousands they'd robbed from me, demanded justice. I wouldn't be their fool any longer. I began to dismantle their carefully constructed reality, piece by piece, starting with a call to a private investigator. This wasn't just about reclaiming my money; it was about exposing every single lie and making sure they paid for every cent of their deceit.

Introduction

Her friend, Liam, added, "We need to push for the big one, the six-figure investment, then you dump him."

My world tilted, the 0 above her head blazing into terrifying clarity.

Chapter 1

I' m Ethan.

My family is well-known in Boston, respected.

I did well for myself too, software development.

Life was good, predictable.

Then the Affinity Gauge appeared.

Just like that, one morning, I could see numbers above people' s heads.

A score.

What they really felt about me.

It was a shock, this new layer to reality.

My girlfriend, Chloe, from college, always so charismatic.

She' d been adopted by the Sterlings, a wealthy family, old money.

But recently, they found their biological daughter, Olivia.

Chloe said she was "estranged," cut off.

She claimed she was struggling, financially, emotionally.

She was always affectionate, loving.

But her Affinity Gauge, the first one I really focused on, read a stark, unbelievable 0.

Zero.

It made no sense.

My mind couldn't connect that number to the Chloe I knew, the one who looked at me with such warmth.

I told myself it was a fluke, a glitch in this new, weird system.

Chloe was going through a lot.

The Sterlings, the estrangement, Olivia.

She said Olivia was difficult, unstable.

Chloe needed me.

She leaned on me, her eyes full of a pain I wanted to erase.

"Ethan, Mrs. Gable, my old foster mother, she's so sick. The medical bills are piling up."

Her voice was soft, laced with worry.

"And Liam, my childhood friend from the old neighborhood, he's trying to get through a vocational program. He needs help too."

I gave her five thousand dollars.

It felt right, helping her, supporting the people she cared about.

She was my Chloe.

The '0' had to be wrong.

My affection for her, my belief in her, was too strong to be shaken by a number.

Chloe talked about our future.

"Once things are stable, Ethan," she' d say, her hand in mine, "once Mrs. Gable is better, and Liam is on his feet, we can finally get married. I just need to get through this. Maybe your parents could speak to the Sterlings? Help them understand."

Marriage.

It was what I wanted, what I thought we were building towards.

Her words were a balm, pushing the unsettling '0' further into the back of my mind.

I held onto that hope, that promise of a future together.

I prepared myself to do more, to help her secure that stability she craved.

Then, a random Tuesday, I was early for a lunch meeting.

I walked past a small cafe, and I heard her voice.

Chloe' s.

Sharp, frustrated, not the soft tones she used with me.

"That five thousand Ethan gave me barely covered Mrs. Gable's retainer for the month's act!"

Liam was with her.

His voice was low, conspiratorial.

"We need to push for the big one, the six-figure investment. After that, you dump him, we take the money, and we're gone."

My world tilted.

The cafe, the city sounds, faded.

All I could hear were their words, their plan.

The '0' above Chloe's head suddenly blazed in my mind, no longer a fluke, but a cold, hard fact.

The woman I loved, the future I envisioned, it was all a lie.

Chapter 2

The coffee I' d been about to order turned bitter in my thoughts.

I walked away from the cafe, their voices echoing.

Chloe and Liam.

They continued their charade, of course.

Chloe was still the struggling victim, Liam her supportive, down-on-his-luck friend.

But now, when I looked at them, I saw them through a different lens.

A cold, clear lens.

The love I felt had curdled into something else, a grim resolve.

I started noticing things.

Liam, supposedly so strained financially he needed my help for "tuition," was wearing new designer sneakers.

The kind that cost a month's rent for some.

He flashed a new, high-end smartphone.

Small things, but they screamed louder than any words.

Chloe would ask for more money for his "vocational program fees," her expression earnest.

Liam' s Affinity Gauge, when I focused on it, was a chilling -100.

Pure, unadulterated negativity.

Then, one afternoon, I saw them.

Outside a small, expensive boutique.

Not "just friends."

Liam' s arm was around Chloe' s waist, his lips close to her ear.

They shared a look, intimate and knowing.

It wasn't friendship.

It was a betrayal, played out in broad daylight.

My decision to step back, to observe, solidified.

I wouldn't be their fool any longer.

The demands escalated.

They came to my apartment one evening.

Chloe' s face was pale, her eyes wide with feigned panic.

"Ethan, it's Mrs. Gable! There's been a medical emergency. She needs a large payment, right now, for a procedure."

Liam stood beside her, looking suitably grave.

They expected me to write another check, to solve another fabricated crisis.

I stayed calm.

"Chloe," I said, my voice even, "I've been thinking. I can't interfere with the Sterlings anymore. It's their family matter."

Her eyes flickered.

"And I won't be providing large sums of cash anymore. If you need help finding a job, I can offer that. Liam, I can help you with your resume, connect you with some people for career advice."

I paused, then added, "I'll also let Mr. Henderson, the head of your vocational program, know that you're not under my family's patronage. He' s an old family acquaintance, just so there' s no misunderstanding about your funding."

The air in the room changed.

Chloe' s composure cracked.

Liam looked like he' d been punched.

His Affinity Gauge, I noted with a detached sort of interest, plummeted.

From -100 to a visceral -200.

They were shaken.

Good.
