'Quantum Physics'
It was written in big letters on the board of a classroom of college. An enticingly handsome young man in his early thirties (might be 32-33 years old) was giving a lecture. White shirt paired with black trousers were perfectly hugging his tall lean body. His chiseled jawline covered by shortly trimmed beards, sharp nose, and a pair of deep black eyes under the gold-rimmed glasses were making him very appealing and attractive.
Pushing his glasses a little upon his nose bridge with his forefinger, he continued his lecture "In Classical mechanics objects exist in a particular space at a particular time while in Quantum mechanics objects exist in probability. In other words...."
Knock.... knock...
He looked at the door and saw a peon.
"Yes."
"Sorry to disturb you, professor. This is a parcel for you."
"Parcel? Who sent me a parcel here?"
"There is no name of the sender."
"Ok, thank you."
He took the parcel and looked at it suspiciously for a while before keeping it on the table, and resuming the lecture. After finishing the class, he went to his office and opened the parcel. He saw a few photographs of a man and a woman kissing and hugging together. His eyebrows pulled together, and his face turned gloomy immediately after seeing these. Anxiety, anger, frustration mixed in his heart as if different color pallets blended all at once, causing him unable to breathe. He felt a sharp pain in his heart as if thousands of knives were stabbing together ruthlessly. He clutched his chest on the left side tightly and leaned back on his chair. He was gasping for the air. Cold sweat appeared on his forehead. He tried to calm down, closing his eyes.
After a long time, when he calmed down a little, he took his phone out of his pocket and dialed a familiar number.
The call was connected after a few rings, and he heard a mesmerizing female voice, "Hello."
His voice didn't come out of his throat for a while, so he kept quiet.
"Mr. Black, are you there?"
After a long pause, he answered, "Coming home, wait for me."
He hung up the phone immediately after saying this. He grabbed the car keys and walked out.
........
One hour later.
Ring... Ring... Ring...
"Hello," Lisa answered the call.
"Hello ma'am, this is the sheriff here, calling from the city hospital."
An unfamiliar male voice sounded from the other end of the phone, and she also heard him say, "Mr. Carl Black had met with a car accident. Please come here as soon as possible."
Dud.... dud... dud...
Lisa's face turned pale immediately, and her expression froze. The phone slipped down from her hand. Time had stopped for her, and she rooted on the same spot statically. It seemed that she even forgot how to breathe. She would be mistaken easily as a statue if someone didn't notice her up and down moving chest. After some time, she regained her senses. Grabbing her phone and purse, she rushed to the city hospital.
Half an hour later, she reached the hospital and ran towards the reception. She asked something to the receptionist and after getting the desired information, she ran to the emergency room. She was pacing back and forth, rubbing her palms impatiently outside the emergency room.
Several minutes later, a nurse came out and asked her, "Are you the family member of the patient?"
Lisa quivered and responded, "I am his wife."
The nurse sized her up carefully and handed over a bunch of papers to her, "Please sign these papers so that we can start surgery immediately."
Lisa took the papers and signed without delay wherever needed. She asked her in a shaky voice, "How is he?"
"He is seriously injured. Lots of blood loss. We can't say anything right now." The nurse walked back to the ER after saying this.
Surgery was going on. Lisa was sitting on a chair outside the OT. Her solemn gaze focused on the closed door of OT. The nurse's words kept on resounding in her mind. She was quite scared at that moment.
"Ma'am, are you alone?"
An unfamiliar male voice sounded from the top of her head.
She looked up and saw a sheriff. He might be the one who called her. She was staring at him blankly unable to say anything.
"You should inform your family members."
After a long pause, she came to her senses and responded, "Yes. I will."
"It looks like a hit and run case, though we will investigate thoroughly."
"Thank you, Sir."
"Take care, Ma'am."
The sheriff left after saying this.
Lisa informed her brother-in-law, Mack Black, about the situation.
In a blink, another hour passed. The light of OT was still on. Lisa was moving back and forth, continuously rubbing her palms. Her hands and feet were ice cold. Her mind was blank. At that moment, a terrifying thought appeared in her mind...
'what if he can't make it?'
A shiver ran through her spine, causing her hairs to stand from head to toe.
'no no no no no.....' she shook her head vigorously. He wouldn't leave her, would he? She was feeling so helpless and distressed that she started crying.
"How is the situation?"
Mack Black's voice startled Lisa. She turned around, only to meet Mack Black's questioning gaze, and her mother-in-law Helen Black's pitiful face whose eyes turned red and puffy due to crying. Unable to answer anything, she pulled back her gaze and looked at the door of OT.
After another two hours, the light went off, and the door of OT pushed open. The doctor came out with a long face.
Mack Black rushed towards the doctor and asked with a shaky voice, "How is my brother?"
"He had suffered a severe brain injury. Though the surgery was successful, the next 48 hours are crucial. Till then we can't say anything."
The doctor left after saying this.
Helen Black was crying uncontrollably.
"Mom.... everything will be fine." Mack Black comforted his mother, rubbing her back up and down. "I will send you first. Sister-in-law, you also go back. I'll update you about brother's condition."
"No, I'll stay here." Lisa denied instaantly.
Mack Black sighed deeply in dismay and without saying anything, he left to send back his mother.
Carl Black was in ICU. Only one person was allowed to see him at a time. Lisa entered the ICU to see him. He was lying senselessly on the sickbed. His head was wrapped with a white gauge and several bandages were there on his body. He was in ventilation and several wires were attached to his chest. The beeping of the machines echoed the ICU.
Seeing him in this condition, Lisa felt tremors in her heart. She couldn't hold back her tears from falling and ran out. She leaned against the wall outside the ICU and started crying miserably.
48 hours later...
Lisa and Mack Black both were in the doctor's chamber. The doctor started explaining slowly about Carl Black's situation, "Mr. Black's vitals are normal but due to severe brain injury, he is in a coma now. We are shifting him to the ward today."
Hearing this, Lisa was stunned. Chill ran through her spine, and she stared at the doctor speechlessly. After a long pause, she heard Mack Black's low voice, "When will he wake up?"
"It's difficult to say. It may take 3 days or 3 months or 3 years or more. It depends on how he responds to our treatment. But nothing to worry, we will try our best to bring him back."
After that, they both came out from the chamber, hanging down their heads. In the afternoon, Carl Black was shifted to a VIP ward. After finishing all the arrangements, Mack Black left for office. As an IT professional he had lots of pending works to complete.
Lisa was alone with Carl Black in the ward. She sat down on the edge of the sickbed holding his hand. Tears streamed down uncontrollably and she whispered, "Mr. Black...."
Who knew how long she was crying like that. Several terrifying thoughts were pouring into her mind, and she was feeling very helpless unable to shake off the fear from her mind. She lost the track of time. The sky turned dark, but she was still sitting in the same position on the sickbed motionlessly, staring at her husband.
Flashback...
A few months ago...
A beautiful girl in her early twenties, was busy drawing. Her bewitching deep blue eyes were fixed on the drawing board, expression pensive. Very soon, she finished her drawing and turned around to face the students, only to say, "Today's class is all about pencil drawing. It is monochromatic which means there is only one color. We will not use any color. So...."
Tringggg.......
"Ok children, times up. We will continue this tomorrow" after saying that the girl left the class.
As soon as she came out, her phone rang. Seeing the familiar number on the screen, a wide smile appeared on her face, and she answered the call immediately, "Hello."
She heard a deep male voice from the other side of the phone, "I am outside."
"Coming."
After hanging up the phone, she rushed to the gate and saw an elegant 6 feet tall, handsome young man, leaning on his sports car in front of the school gate. He was wearing a royal blue shirt and a pair of gray pants. His facial structure is stoic with a sharp nose. He was running his hands through his silky black hairs.
He was grinning widely showing two rows of white teeth when he saw the girl coming out of the school gate.
He ran towards her, hugged her tightly, and whispered, "Lisa."
"How long have you been here, Daniel Brooke?"
Daniel Brooke chuckled and replied, "For a while."
He lowered his head and kissed Lisa softly and longingly.
After pulling back, she asked him, "How is your work going on?"
Daniel Brooke was a struggling lawyer. His father Thomas Brooke was a famous Lawyer in the 'X' city. But he didn't want to join his father's law firm. He wanted to build his career on his own.
"Ah.... right now I don't want to talk about the work." He grimaced and waved his hand. "I am here to spend a good time with you and don't worry, one day I will be famous like my Dad."
"Best of luck."
Daniel caressed her pink cheek and muttered, "Let's have coffee together."
Within half an hour, they were sitting face to face in a café near her school where they used to visit regularly.
"Daniel, on a serious note, my parents are continuously pressuring me for marriage. I am starting to freak out. Let's get married before it's too late."
"Baby, you know very well. Right now I can't think about marriage. I want to concentrate on my career first. What is the point of this discussion?" He wrinkled his nose in annoyance.
Lisa felt bad hearing this. She felt something was broken inside her. She was hoping Daniel Brooke would agree with her, but his response was enough to shatter her dreams. She was depressed by the continuous pressure of her parents for the marriage, so she wanted to discuss this matter with him. But.....
"What if I marry another man?"
Daniel glared deadly at her and warned her, "Dare to do it."
Lisa was too lazy to continue this discussion further, so she changed the topic. After chatting for a while, Daniel dropped Lisa at her apartment.
After waving at him, she walked towards her house and pressed the doorbell. The door was opened by her mother Linda Holmes who was smiling from ear to ear, "Honey, you are back. Look who has come to see you."
Lisa's gaze shifted towards the living room, only to see a young man and a middle-aged woman. The man was very handsome and looked like the Greek God, wearing a gray suit that was complimenting his honey-toned skin. His black eyes under the gold-rimmed glasses were as deep as an ocean filled with stars. He was staring at Lisa with a faint smile.
Lisa was dumbfounded and for a long time, she was not able to react.
The cold icy voice of her father snatched her back to the reality "Meet Mr. Carl Black and his mother Mrs. Helen Black. Mr. Carl Black is a professor of Physics at our college."
Lisa's father, Marke Holmes was a librarian of a renowned college in their city. So there was no doubt that he was familiar with a professor. She thought they might have come here to meet her father.
Lisa greeted them politely with a smile on her face, "Hello Mr. Black, hello Mrs. Black."
Carl Black also responded politely with his cold deep sexy voice, "Hello Miss Holmes" and Helen Black only nodded with a grin in response.
"We have fixed your marriage next month with Mr. Black."
Mark Holmes said with a beaming smile.
Lisa's jaw dropped in shock and stood still on the spot as if she was rooted there, speechless. Her eyes were wide open. Her mind was buzzing. She was unable to hear anything. She only saw the people around her were moving their lips and smiling. She didn't know when and how she came back to her room.
"Honey, I am so delighted that you are getting married. Mr. Carl Black is such a gentleman. You are pretty lucky, dear."
Linda Holmes's voice snatched her back to reality.
She was startled and stared at her mother, completely shocked.
While peeling an apple, Linda continued speaking, "You know what, he came himself to your father and gave the marriage proposal. It's very rare to get such a good person nowadays. Your father is...."
Before Linda Holmes could complete her sentence, Lisa interrupted her, "And you people don't think to ask me once before you promise him. How could you do that?"
"Huh?"
"You know I love Daniel. How can you fix marriage without even asking me?"
Linda Holmes was speechless. For a few moments, there was pin-drop silence in the room.
Then Linda started saying slowly, "You are still dating Daniel Brooke, despite my warning, aren't you? Honey, listen carefully, he is not serious with you. People like Daniel only keep playing around. One day he will hurt you. Try to understand before it's too late."
"It's not like that mom, I know Daniel better than you. He will never hurt me."
"Oh really?... Then why is he not ready to marry you yet?"
"There is no rush. When the time comes, we will get married."
Lisa sighed deeply and pleaded, holding her mother's hands, "Mom, tell daddy to cancel this marriage. I really can't marry anyone whom I don't even know. Please, Mom."
Linda Holmes brushed off her hands and blurted out angrily, "Lisa, are you dreaming? Do you think Mr. Thomas Brooke will accept you as a daughter-in-law? Don't forget that they belong to a higher society. Their social circle, lifestyle everything is very different from us. Lisa, come out from your dreamland and face the reality. We are ordinary people, and we can't mess around with them. We can't afford the consequences. Mr. Carl Black is far more suitable for you. He is a good person, and you will not regret marrying him."
"But....."
Lisa tried to say something but before she could say anything, Linda Holmes interrupted, "End of discussions. Go, rest early."
Lisa was so furious that she couldn't help but started crying uncontrollably. She quivered and said, "I refuse to marry Mr. Black, and if you force me to do so, I'll take my life away."
After saying that, she grabbed the fruit knife and was about to cut her wrist, but Linda holmes slapped tightly on her delicate cheeks. Within a blink, she snatched the knife from her hand and asked fiercely, " Are you out of mind? How dare you? Ok, fine. If you want to suicide, then be it. But neither I can see you die in front of my eyes nor I can see the humiliated face of my husband. So I will finish my life first."
She cut her wrist ruthlessly immediately after saying that. Blood was dripping down from the wound.
Lisa was so scared that she started shouting, "Mom, what have you done?" She grabbed her mother's wounded wrist tightly to stop the flow of blood and called her father, "Dad, hurry up, come here."
Hearing the commotion, Mark Holmes rushed to Lisa's room, only to see the pitiful condition of mother and daughter, and asked, "What just happened here?"
"Dad, hurry up, take Mom to the hospital."
They rushed to the nearest hospital as soon as possible. Lisa was pacing back and forth outside the emergency room, continuously rubbing her palms. Mark Holmes glared at her and asked coldly, "Now care to explain what was going on?"
Lisa was startled and stopped on the spot. She glanced at her father and muttered, "I am sorry, Dad. It was all my fault. I won't do it again."
Mark Holmes shrugged helplessly and said, "I just don't...."
Before he could finish speaking, the doctor came out of the emergency room, "Mr. Holmes, you can see the patient now. There is nothing to worry about. The cut was not deep. It is just a superficial wound."
Lisa and Mark Holmes both entered the room. She couldn't control her tears from falling after seeing her mother's wrist wrapped in gauge. She whispered "sorry, sorry, sorry....." hugging her tightly.
"I need to talk to my daughter alone."
Mark Holmes sighed and left shaking his head.
Lisa sobbed and stammered, "I..I.. am r..ready to marry Mr. Black."
Tears rolled down from Linda Holmes's eyes as well and said in a gentle tone, "You will be happy with Mr. Carl Black."
She patted her daughter's head gently.
In Black villa...
Carl Black was lying on his bed. His eyes were fixed on the white ceiling. A faint smile was never leaving his face. The memory of when he saw Lisa first time in the library came alive in his mind.
That day she was wearing a yellow sleeveless knee-length dress which was complimenting her slightly pink fair complexion. Her blonde hair was cascading to her shoulder. In his eyes, she was like a fairy. She was talking something to the librarian. He couldn't control his feet to move towards her, and he heard her sweet mesmerizing voice, "Ok Dad, then I am leaving first."
For a few seconds, their eyes locked with each other when she turned around to leave. Carl Black skipped a bit when he saw her deep blue eyes so closely. But before could know anything, she pulled back her eyes and walked out, without glancing at him. He turned around to see her leaving figure. He couldn't avert his gaze until she disappeared from his line of sight.
Recalling this, a wave of happiness hit his heart. His heart was drumming inside his chest, and his face lit up with a bright smile. He murmured her name, "Lisa..."
Linda Holmes was discharged from the hospital the next day. Lisa took leaves for two days to take care of her mother. During these days, Daniel Brooke called and messaged her several times, but she didn't answer any of them. Two days later, she went to school. However, she couldn't concentrate on her work. To clear her mind, she went to have coffee at the cafeteria.
She was looking outside through the window in a daze, holding the cup. Her mind was buzzing while her eyes were empty, devoid of hopes. She didn't take a single sip of the coffee. The coffee turned cold as ice.
"What is it? Where is your mind? I was calling you several times, but you didn't answer me."
A sweet female voice came from the top of her head and snatched her back to reality. She looked up and saw her colleague and friend Anna Green who was staring at her with a slight frown.
"Oh... It's nothing."
Anna Green sat down on the opposite chair, "Really?... Don't tell me that something is not bothering you. Tell me what is happening."
Lisa sighed deeply and explained, "I am in mess right now. My parents had fixed my marriage with someone called Carl Black."
"What?"
"Daniel is calling me continuously, and I don't know how to face him."
Anna Green sighed in dismay, "To be honest, I don't like Daniel. Don't mind, huh. I think he is not the person he shows. I feel like something cruel is hidden inside him."
Lisa was stunned to hear her. She never thought that her best friend would think something like this about her boyfriend. She was enraged.
"How could you say that? He is really...."
But before she could say further, Anna Green started saying, "Alright. It's my mistake. I was just sharing my thoughts. Sorry, don't be mad at me."
Meanwhile, Lisa's phone started ringing. She sighed and said, "It's Daniel again."
"Answer it, you can't ignore him all the time."
Reluctantly, Lisa answered just before the call was about to disconnect. She heard Daniel Brooke's cold voice the moment she put the phone on her ear, "Finally, you have decided to answer my call. You are avoiding me, aren't you?"
"Let's meet at the old place. I will be there after classes."
After saying that, she hung up the phone without waiting for his answer.
At the end of the day, she went to the cafe. She ordered a cappuccino while waiting for him. Around ten minutes later, Daniel Brooke's handsome figure appeared in front of her. He sat opposite her, staring at her with displeasure written on his face. Both of them were quiet for a long time. No one was willing to start the conversation.
"Why didn't you answer my calls and messages?"
Daniel Brooke was the first who broke the silence.
Lisa was only staring at him without a single word.
"What?... Tell me, what is bothering you?"
She was still silent, unable to find proper words to say. Daniel shrugged in frustration and asked fiercely, "What's wrong? Say something or you decided to not talk to me?"
"I am getting married."
"What?"
"We are done, Daniel. From now on don't contact me."
Lisa stood up to leave after saying that. Tears rolled down from her eyes. Her heart was paining so much as if thousands of needles are piercing continuously together. But before she could go a few steps, Daniel Brooke's strong hand grabbed her arm and pulled her into his embrace.
"You can't leave me like this, and you are not getting married to anyone else. You are mine. No one can take you away from me." Daniel said possessively.
"It's too late Daniel. I...."
Before she could finish, he held her head from behind, lowered his head, and kissed her lips fiercely.
After a long time, he released her and said in a warning tone, "Lisa, you know very well that right now I am handling a crucial case. This could change my life. My entire concentration is on this case. Don't create any trouble for me now. You have to wait. Do you understand? Hmm?"
"But my parents have already fixed the marriage next month."
Daniel Brooke was so angry and frustrated that he lost his control. He glared at her, "Ok then, go and get married. But Lisa, don't think that you can escape from me. No one can take you away from me. I promise I'll snatch you back. I will ruin your so-called husband."
Within a blink, he turned around and walked out. Lisa was dumbfounded and remained rooted on the spot speechlessly, staring at his leaving figure. Her heart trembled to hear him. She never saw this side of Daniel.
An unknown fear appeared in her mind. His last words were resonated in her mind over and over again. After a long time, she regained her sense and went out.
At night, she tossed and turned on her bed unable to sleep. She was thinking about what Daniel Brooke said to her. In the meantime, her phone rang.
Without seeing the caller ID, she answered the call, "Hello."
She heard a cold sexy male voice from the other end of the phone, "Um.... this is Carl Black here. Sorry to call you at this hour. D-did I disturb you?"
Lisa was startled and jumped out of the bed. Her jaw dropped, and her eyes grew wide. She was too shocked to respond. There was a long pause.
"Miss Holmes, are you there?"
His words broke her trance. She swallowed a mouthful of saliva before answering, "Yeah, yeah, um.... how can I help you, Mr. Black?"
"Oh.. a- about that. I just want to know that, um.... are you free t-tomorrow?"
Lisa narrowed her eyes unable to figure out why he was asking this.
"Why?" She asked in a state of stupor.
"I just want to have coffee with you if you are free."
"Oh... Mr. Black, I am sorry, I can't. My Mom always told me to come back home early, so..."
Carl Black interrupted, "Okay, no problem at all. Um... at what time are your classes over?"
"4 pm. Why?"
"Just curious. Alright, then good night, Miss Holmes."
"Good night."
Lisa was flabbergasted by the sudden call of Carl Black. She sat down on the bed and muttered in her mind, 'what just happened?'
Her heart was beating faster and faster. She sighed deeply and tried to get some sleep, but whenever she closed her eyes, Carl Black's deep enchanting voice rang in her ears. She tossed and turned again and again.
After a long time, she fell asleep and woke up to the sound of the alarm the next morning.
Lisa was having lunch with Anna Green.
"Did you meet Daniel yesterday?" Anna Green asked.
"Hmm."
"What are you going to do now?"
"I have no options. Daniel wants to concentrate on his career now. He is not ready for the marriage."
Anna shook her head helplessly and sighed deeply.
"What is it?"
"Forget it. You will not trust me if I say it."
Lisa frowned and asked, "Oh come on, we are good friends, why won't I trust you?"
"If you say so. I want to say that I feel like Daniel is not a good person." Anna Green exhaled deeply and added, "I don't know to whom you are getting married, but it should not be Daniel."
"Thank you for your concern, Anna. It means a lot. But right now, I just want to enjoy this moment. I don't want to think about the marriage, and I don't want to think about Daniel as well."
Anna Green chuckled, "That's the spirit. How about this...... Shall we go shopping?"
"Yeah, that's a good idea to release the stress."
They both laughed and chatted for a while and went back to their respective classes.
At the end of the day, Lisa and Anna Green came out of the school together to go shopping. They saw a handsome man, standing in front of the gate. He was staring at them with a faint smile on his face.
Lisa was stunned to see him and asked him in a frenzy, "Mr. Black, why are you here?"
"I just came to see you."
Anna Green's jaw almost hit the ground when she saw Carl black. Her gaze glued at him. She regained her senses by Lisa's next words, "Anna, you are drooling."
"Is he the one to whom you are getting married? Wow, he is so hot."
Anna Green exclaimed loudly. She sized him up carefully. She was so excited to see him that she couldn't help but stretch her hand to introduce herself, "Hello Mr. Black, I am Anna Green."
Carl Black took her hand and said, "Nice to meet you, Miss Green."
"Oh, nice to meet you too, Mr. Black. By the way, we are going shopping. Will you come with us?"
Lisa pinched Anna Green's waist and whispered, "Anna."
"Ah... Why are you pinching?" Anna Green shouted and glared at her in disbelief.
Carl Black laughed heartily, "Sure, why not? It's my pleasure."
Lisa shook her head to deny, "No it's ok, Mr. Black. You don't bother about that."
"Don't worry. In fact, in this way, I can spend some time with you. Come on, there is my car. Let's go shopping."
Anna Green was jumping up and down happily, "Yes, yes, let's go, let's go."
Lisa was feeling so helpless to see Anna Green like this. Her mouth twisted in distress, and she cast a death stare at her. But Anna Green didn't notice it and got into the car. Helpless, Lisa could only follow her. Carl Black drove to the shopping mall.
All these were seen by Daniel Brooke, not from afar. He came here to meet Lisa. He was waiting for her for a long time, sitting in his sports car. But before he could go out of the car, he saw the scene and halted his steps. His expression darkened when he saw Lisa going with another man. He tightened his grip around the steering wheel, turning his knuckles white, and murmured fiercely, "You can't escape from me, Lisa."
