Chapter 1 Prologue

Ruby's POV

Christmas Eve

I had an argument with Sharon last night, that girl is always getting on my nerves. I sat on the vanity table and applied light makeup, preparing for Charlotte's bachelorette party.

Well, I wouldn't blame mother for siding with Sharon at all.

She is also my mom, but I can't believe she is so biased.

My step father wouldn't give a damn about us and only focuses on his business. I want to be an actress. That has been my dream for a long time.

I knew I had a bad temper, but couldn't help it. A month ago, Sharon changed her mind and decided to be an actress. I didn't give a damn before, till I heard from the manager this morning that Sharon had father invest in the movie, and my role was given to her.

I struggled so fucking hard to get that role! She always has a way to snatch whatever belongs to me. When I heard the news, my jaw dropped and for a moment my eyes blurred. Tears.

I've been at odds with Sharon since our childhood days, and because of mother's favoritism, It made me feel that I'm less important than she is, and I don't feel good at all.

A sigh escaped my lips as I wore my heels and walked out of the villa. Two cars were parked in the garage, but unfortunately, I haven't had the luxury to enter it since mom married my father, Mr. John Morgan, that fu*cking business capitalist.

Mom said I'm unlucky from birth, for this reason, she had isolated me and made Sharon closer to him. Saying that I would jinx her marriage. I can't even dare talk to my step father, besides I didn't feel that familial love for him. As for my mother, I still had hope in my heart, hoping that one day, regardless of everything, she would look back and acknowledge my value.

She wanted to be an actress, but didn't succeed because she got pregnant with me, which ruined her career. I guess maybe that's why she had prejudice against me.

I'm feeling quite frustrated right now, I had to swallow my discomfort because Sharon is my younger sister, it has always been drilled into my head since young.

I hailed a taxi nearby after walking for nearly thirty minutes along Wellington street in the U.S.

"Parody hotel." I uttered, staring out of the window.

Twenty minutes later, I got down from the taxi, shuffled through my purse and brought six dollars and paid the taxi, thanking him politely.

Faced with the familiar and unfamiliar environment, I shivered, feeling slightly cold. I know I'm very pretty.

I'm endowed with a red naturally curly hair, a pair of foxy shaped eyes, embedded with light green irises which made me look elegant, cute, cunning and at the same a not so easy to mess with temperament.

It's the beginning of winter, and I wore too little. "Sighs." I entered the hotel building flashing different colors of neon lights.

I showed the security my ID, they scrutinized it and let me enter.

"Hey! Ruby! Over here!" Charlotte called out, beckoning to me.

I widened my eyes, chuckling.

It was no surprise that Sharon was over there.

I saw a group of frivolous women proceeding to chant the indecorous word at the male dancers as they resembled libidinous teenagers that couldn't get their fill no matter how hard they tried.

Looking like a wilting rose beneath the multi- coloured flashing lights I saw my step sister, she displayed an excessive amount of deference, Sharon sat there in the VIP lounge and sipped on a margarita with a bored expression on her face.

My second cousin from my mother's side, Naomi collapsed beside her, after her third round spent gyrating against the half-naked pole dancers that were hired to "entertain" them for the night. "God, I'm exhausted!" Naomi exclaimed.

Sharon snubbed her. Well, it's not a new thing. I walked and took a seat, touching Naomi's head to see how much she drank.

"Gosh, she's nearly wasted." I scoffed and Charlotte chuckled after hugging me.

"Welcome to the party, cousin." Naomi yelled, trying to make her voice heard in the loud background.

"Do you think I can take that one home with me tonight?" She pointed at a particular stripper that was role-playing as a police officer. His gaze met hers right on time and sent a delicious wink her way.

Naomi squealed like a teenage girl that got noticed by her crush. "Did you see that? He totally wants some of this!" She proclaimed whilst nudging me and Sharon in the side.

Sharon forced a smile at her. "Good for you."

"You love men so much, cousin." I asserted, wrinkling my eyebrows. Naomi is nearly a nympho in this aspect, whoever is her future husband will get to hold her in a tight leech.

"Hey," Charlotte said as she took both of my cheeks in her hands. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing." Charlotte raised an eyebrow at me and silently said something along the lines of "bullshit'

My light green eyes finally relaxed a bit. "I'm just frustrated."

Sharon heard my words, and turned to glare at me, she hissed lightly and continued sipping her drink.

"But it's my bachelorette party!" Charlotte hopped on the couch we were sitting on, struggling to find her equilibrium in high heels and gestured to the spacious club. "We booked this place out just for us tonight!"

My eyes scanned the large area of the famous club in the upper East side of Wellington. It was just as classy as people said it was. She had gotten many invites before, even from its owner upon its grand opening, but she never had the time to attend.

Her schedule barely allowed her to have the leisures of nightclubs. Okay, that was a lie. Compared to how her schedule was two years ago versus now, she had all the time in the world. It was a matter of preferences really.

Crowded places with sweaty bodies and irresponsible intake of alcohol wasn't really her taste when it came to picking hobbies.

Plus she preferred not to worry her fiancé, Skylar. Charlotte had noticed how he reacted negatively every time she wasn't within his field of vision for too long.

I couldn't help but wonder how I would feel if my husband is too possessive of course, I'm yet to even have a serious boyfriend.

To imagine spending an entire night out in a club or hotel was simply nothing short of disaster in my mind.

Though, the cold reaction he usually had whenever Charlotte ventured outside hadn't been the case recently ... Still she had to take the necessary precautions to not start a fight with him.

God only knew how long it took for them to make up after they started shooting bullets at each other. She'd always have to be the one to apologize first. It was out of consideration for the shy person Jake was.

Charlotte is too humble in her relationship, I'm even wondering if this fiancé of hers is suitable. She isn't free at all. I've tried my best talking her out of it, but she loves Skyler so much.

Despite him being the co-owner of Blitz Entertainment he was a bit of an introvert.

Most times, it was that endearing trait of his that Charlotte loves.

Well, as long as my cousin loves him, it's none of my business.

I sighed feeling slightly frustrated.

Chapter 2 A Cause Of Misfortune, A Bundle Of Joy

I was broken out of my reverie when Charlotte took me by the shoulders and shook me -- hard. "Loosen up, will you ?! A night like this is once in a lifetime."

"I should be saying that to you, I'm worried about you, you know Skyler is possessive. Charlotte won't you suffocate if you marry someone who won't let you feel free?"

" I think we've talked about this before?" She raised her eyebrows, displeased.

"Alright, alright. Sorry." I closed my eyes and sighed again.

"At least I'm about to get married, what about you? You don't even have a boyfriend at twenty!" Charlotte scoffed.

"Don't mock me will ya?" I pinched her arm. She is older but we communicate like how sisters do.

"And who told you Skyler won't let me come out?" Charlotte declared.

"Well, unless you get a divorce and decide to remarry in the future ... " Charlotte's chocolate brown eyes were as wide as saucers at that last remark.

"What did you just say?"

"Calm down, Little Miss Morgan. I'm not trying to curse you or anything." I paused waiting for her anger to subside. "Eleven hours can make you change your mind from walking down the aisle. For Skyler maybe, but you, nah ... " I asserted, hitting the bull where it hurts.

The glare Charlotte sent my way had me backpedaling," Kidding! Gosh, Charlotte, can't you take a joke?"

I drank three glasses of champagne and felt a bit dizzy, I didn't mean to sound harsh, I'm known for not sugar coating but I had to lay down the truth. I'm the law of falling in love, the one who falls first loses. And to this fact, Charlotte already lost.

Sharon suddenly drew a drink from the table before us and forced it in the hands of the bride-to-be. Gave it to Naomi and handed a glass to me. I was slightly drunk, but I didn't care at all, just took it from her hands.

Charlotte blanched, her mood back again, and I sighed in relief. "Let's drink up!"

"Pathetic...'' Sharon scoffed, rolling her eyes, I was drunk, but didn't quite make out her full words.

The next moment, I blanked out.

*****

Five years later!

It happened. My fate was already set in stone the night I had a smoky and indulgent sex with an unknown species.

An irreparable mistake that could destroy my career.

That memory was bleak, I had been defiled that fateful night. I couldn't even remember the man I slept with. He oozed off a dangerous aura, and I knew because my body subconsciously reacted. I remembered how panicked I was on New Year's day. Holding a pregnancy test kit in the bathroom, with two red lines visible on it. My body trembled all over.

Mom disliked me, and I didn't want her to hate me more. I was scared when I found out that I was pregnant. Charlotte was the only one who knew of my circumstances back then, I couldn't tell Naomi because she is a blabber mouth, and through her, Sharon will find out.

I opted to stay back in the States, and Sharon felt relieved that I wouldn't be going back to New Zealand with them.

What hurts more than anything, was the fact that mom didn't bother to share any sentiments with me. She left without a care in the world.

She might have felt that getting rid of a trouble maker like me is nothing but good news. I had to endure her neglect, I still wished she could miss me while I'm here. I want her to know my importance if that still meant anything to her.

Gosh, I'm willing to endure it. For one thing I'm sure, her words were true... I am unlucky.

I sat on a stool, in a daze. It's been five years already, the pain I went through, the joys and sadness that comes along with being a mother. Kelvin had been nothing but a sweet cute little child. Knowing for a fact that Charlotte was married, I didn't want to bother her, taking care of a child could be quite tasking, I've experienced it first hand.

I've stayed away long enough, I'm planning to take Kelvin to Charlotte's and go back to New Zealand. I want to hide him for a while till I'm certain my parents will accept his existence.

I chuckled drily as I skimmed through my phone, I have only received ten messages from my mom these five years. Funny huh?

Two messages a year. I'm really unlucky, why can't I receive her love? Am I unworthy of her love?

Tears slipped out of my eyes, my nose was sore. Regardless of how I've been treated, I still made sure to give my son all the love I have.

"Knock, knock. '' A knock on my bedroom door brought me out of my thoughts.

"Come in!" I yelled.

The door opened and Charlotte peeped her head into my room, a smile forming on her face when she saw my diary placed on the table.

"Given your stubborn personality, it's almost impossible to believe that you write a diary." Charlotte snickers.

I let out a smile as I closed the diary and placed it on the side table, "When do I ever listen to you. Even the fiercest of all personalities keeps a diary when they want to." I stated, while getting off my bed.

"Did it help?" A slightly hopeful Charlotte asked, looking at me.

I let out a defeated sigh. "I have to get past this Charlotte. I can't keep being a broken girl." I sighed once again and added, "If only life was this easy, Charly."

"I know moving on was easier said than done, especially when you had to move on from all the barrage of misfortune."

I quickly shook my head and looked at Charlotte, not wanting my thoughts to go down a dangerous territory,

"Now come on, let's go downstairs before Grandma ends up blowing up the house." Charlotte lets out a laugh, "You have got to give her some credit." She defended, as the both of us walked downstairs.

"Trying to convince me or yourself?" I asked.

"A bit of both." Charlotte admitted, making me chuckle.

We saw granny standing in front of an open fridge, frantically searching to make something for breakfast, while Kelvin watched her from behind.

"Toast, I can still make toast!" Grandma said, glancing at us with a sheepish look on her face.

"Forget the toast grandma, it's all about the hot chocolate." I say, walking over to the microwave to make us some hot chocolate.

"Wrong, it's actually all about the coffee." Charlotte retorted, walking over to the kettle to make herself some coffee. Jeremy Morgan, Charlotte's younger brother, entered the kitchen, "Is there coffee?" he asked.

He came to stay with grandma last week since I will be going back to New Zealand.

I wanted to see what Sharon have been up to these years. She should better get ready for my anger.

Chapter 3 The First Call In Five Years

Grandma rushed around the kitchen in a hurry, "Your first day of high school, and you are totally unprepared." Jeremy went towards Charlotte and quickly stole the mug in her hand, Charlotte did nothing but give him a doting smile.

Who doesn't know that Charlotte is also a brother slave? She loves her brother very much, after all he is the only one remaining from her direct family.

I playfully nudged her, making Charlotte elbow me,"Don't start" she warned, stealing my mug.

I playfully put my hands up in surrender, "I wouldn't dare." I teased, and grabbed myself another mug.

Grandma looked at the only teenager in our midst, "Lunch money?" She asked, holding out a few notes of money.

"He will be okay." Charlotte and I said simultaneously.

Jeremy on the other hand, didn't say anything, just grabbed the lunch money off of grandma's hand, making Charlotte sigh, she knew exactly why he took the money and it was definitely not for lunch.

Charlotte stayed quiet because she knew nothing she said was going to affect Jeremy, he didn't care for her as much as she cared for him.

Men and their selfish streaks, sooner he will realize her importance.

"Momma! Good morning!!" Kelvin greeted me, my small boy is so smart.

I squatted down and hugged Kelvin into my embrace.

Kelvin robbed his soft face onto mine, looking at me with a puppy eye he muttered, "Momma! I also want some tea."

I kissed his forehead and stated. "Mom will make you milk instead? Milk is healthier." Kelvin nodded enthusiastically and I stood up to boil hot water.

"Anything else?" Grandma asked Jeremy.

Jeremy checked his stuff and whispered, "A number two pencil? What am I missing?"

Charlotte snickers but carefully asks, "Don't you have a big presentation today?"

"I'm meeting with my thesis advisor at..." Grandma checked her watch, "Go quickly..."

Hearing her words, Charlotte quickly removed hair from the messy bun it was and attempted to make herself look even slightly presentable.

"Sighs, from a sexy damsel to a haggard woman." Marriage isn't as easy as one thinks. Charlotte shot me a glare but didn't say anything.

We left grandma's little villa and headed outside with Charlotte all dressed elegantly, while I tagged along, carrying Kelvin in my embrace. We planned on driving downtown with one car, I wanted to get provisions for Kelvin, his foodstuffs needs to be replenished.

I carefully tucked Kelvin inside the car, strapped the seat belt on him, and waited for Jeremy to enter since Charlotte sat at the shotgun seat.

Jeremy had a frown on his face since the moment we left the villa.

"You okay?" Charlotte asked worriedly. Jeremy rolled his eyes at her.

"Don't start." He warned, walking out to the other side of the car. The nerve of him talking to his sister in that tone.

Before Charlotte could give him another lecture. He hissed "You better mind your business Charlotte, you are just my elder sister. Nothing more, nothing less."

"Hey, Jeremy, don't you dare talk back to your sister. She took care of you when you were younger. At least you owe her that. So you better stop being fussy. If you don't want anyone to care about your iron monkey face, you better put a freaking smile on it! Got it??" My temper rose like a puffer fish.

"Okay! jeez." He sighed and got into the car, feeling upset that I yelled at him.

"Ruby, you yelled at him too hard, he is still a child." Charlotte tried to defend him, but I rose my hand mid air, interjecting.

"Child or not, respect is reciprocal." Then I tilted my neck, speaking to Jeremy. As long as I'm here, you have to respect your sister. At least that's a basic knowledge." I clicked my tongue annoyed, they all know my temper, if you get on my nerves, I won't mind using my fists on you.

Charlotte sighed and drove to Jeremy's school.

After Jeremy left the car, Charlotte turned to me, "You need to give him some breathing space? Allow him to express his dissatisfaction." I rolled my eyes and Charlotte sighed, "I know I do, but I can't help but be worried, he's my little brother, after mom and dad died, he is my responsibility."

"I know, and that's the reason he has to wake up to reality! You can't keep babying him. He is already 15 for crying out loud." I couldn't help but worry about her.

"Sorry." Charlotte suddenly apologizes, making me widen my eyes, tears nearly coming out of it.

"Why are you apologizing? Is it our fault that life decided to fuck us over? Skyler is still cheating on you right?"

She choked on her words, trying to hold back her tears.

"I didn't expect it to be like this. What a fucked up life." She muttered, trying to sound all cool about it.

"We don't have to wait for life to fuck is over, we need to fuck them over." I stated, comforting her. "If you could be as daring as I am, you would have divorced that jerk long ago, giving him ten punches so he would be afraid to cross your path."

She suddenly laughed hard, her mood improving. "It's ok, sooner or later, he will get what he deserves."

"Oh, let's go to the shopping mall then, I need to get Kelvin some snacks." I winked and she rolled her eyes.

Suddenly, my phone rang, I picked it up and saw the name ID on it.

'Mom.' My eyes reddened, I couldn't believe it at first.

This is the first call I've received from her in five years. I couldn't hide my happiness.

I hurriedly picked up the call, not wanting it to cut off.

"Mother!" I was so enthusiastic.

"Ruby, you need to come back." I couldn't hide my happiness when I heard her weary voice.

It was my mom, she had finally missed me and realized the importance of my existence.
