Chatters, squeals, "heys" and "yos" from the guys, breathtaking hugs among different groups of girls, smile on everyone's faces.
"Clarice, I've missed you so much!"
"Me too Linda, I have a lot to gist you about"
I watched as two girls, who are clearly besties, exchange hugs. It's the first day of resumption in Harvard High after the long holiday of last session.
The 12th graders are hyped up because hey, it's the last year for them in highschool. And just so you know, I'm not part of the "thems".
I sighed as I walked on. I mean, I should also be with a group of friends and best friends squealing and jumping hand in hand in excitement just to show how much we've missed each other but as usual, I'm the quiet, gentle Abigail Howard . Yeah, I don't really have friends, ain't that popular too.
I walked further down the hallway to my class, ignoring the girly giggles and manly laughs erupting from every corner due to thier interaction. I got to the door of my new class and I sighed before pushing my way in. I sighted many old faces and some new ones. They are probably transferred students.
I sighted an empty seat at the end of the first column and I walked to it. It is directly beside the window, just the way I like it. I adjusted my school skirt and sat down, placing my bag beside my seat. I was about to place my head on my seat when I sighted a large shelf with few school bags placed on it. That must be for our bags. I grabbed my bag and walked to the blue painted modern shelf. I placed my bag on it and when back to my seat. Just as I sat down....
"Hello 11th graders!!" A voice boomed from the door post and everyone gave a loud cheer immediately they saw who it was. Well, everybody except me cheered.
My eyes went to the owner of the voice and as expected, it was Adrian, and his best friend Andrew. The most popular guys in school.
When I got to this school, I thought those two would be the richest, the most handsome, the most feared bad boys and play boys of the school because that's exactly how popular guys are portrayed most of the time in the fictional novels that I read but no, they aren't any of those things I mentioned.
Yeah they are both handsome but the most handsome guy in Harvard High is David Kent who is in the 12th grade and he isn't as popular as Andrew and Adrian.
The two guys are rich but definitely not the richest. They aren't bad boys. Infact they take studies seriously but they sure aren't the most intelligent in school.
They have a bunch of girls willing to date them but they don't lure girls or use and dump them.
I gotta say, Andrew is the most responsible. He tends to take responsibility of things. He's the most intelligent in 11th grade. He's the kind of guy that knows his responsibilities and keeps to them.
But, when it comes to Adrian...Adrian can be so irresponsible. Yeah, he takes responsibility of somethings but damn! He's so playful! He jokes around a lot! Adrian can make you laugh at a funeral. He plays with things he's supposed to be serious with. But when he gets serious for once, he becomes another person entirely. And Andrew is more of a "all ladies guy". All ladies except me of course.
You must be wondering, so why are they this popular? Even I don't know, maybe it's because of thier playful personalities.
Even the teachers can't deny how mood lifting they are. A teacher might come into our class with a bad mood but surely won't leave with a bad mood.
I watched the duo as they shook hands with the other guys. Funnily enough, science department which is my class has only 10 boys and 8 girls. We aren't that many.
And speaking of popular, where is....
"Emily, Zeemah!"
My head snapped to the direction of the voice and I sighed deeply.
It's Emily and Zeemah, the popular chics.
Okay okay, I know what you're thinking. Firstly, they ain't spoilt brats, secondly, they ain't the sexiest or prettiest, thirdly, thier family is in the average class. Fourthly, they ain't Adrian and Andrew's girlfriend and they ain't cheerleaders.
What I'd classify the four of them as is...I think it's safe to call them best friends. Since I got to Harvard High, I've always noticed that the four of them were inseparable. I was in the same class with them in first grade but after first grade, I was placed in another class. But that doesn't make me not to notice how tight thier friendship were. They've never dated one another. They are just a squad of crazy and weird folks.
Wherever you find the guys, you'll surely find the girls in their location or close to thier location
Emily is a nice, pretty and funny girl. She mixes with anyone she finds interesting. She's free spirited and can be crazy sometimes.
Zeemah is....how do I even put this? You see, between the two girls I'd say she's the closet to the guys. It was through Zee that Emily got to know the guys. So Zee is kind of the badass "momma". She mixed with guys more than girls and the funny thing is she has never dated any dude from Harvard High. I'm sure of that but I don't know if she has dated any dude outside the school.
And now to myself, you might be thinking I'm some nerd that has some kind of low self esteem or some boring chic that wears an ugly glasses and gets picked on by other students just like in fictional novels.
I'm non of that. I'm just a girl that likes minding her business more than anything. I turned back and sighted Zina, the other quiet girl apart from me. Well, at least she has a bestie. I once had a close friend, Kori, but she relocated to Korea because that's where where dad is working.
We do chat and talk all the time, I really miss her.
I snapped out of my thoughts and placed my attention on the squad, I watched as they hugged with bright smiles. My eyes followed Andrew as he walked towards the seat beside me. He probably doesn't notice someone is watching him. My eyes went to his bag and I widened my eyes, his bag is exacly like mine. Same design, same color, same zip oh my gosh!
People mustn't notice this it else a big deal will be made out if it. He placed it on the shelf and went back to seat. A black leather bag was separating his bag and mine, I guess he didn't notice mine.
The electric bell rang signifying the beginning of first period. I glanced at the timetable behind me for the subject we have..hmm, Geography.
"Morning class."
Mr. George, our geography and homeroom teacher, walked into the class with his signature smile and gentle footsteps.
Mr. George is a 30 years old man but he looks 25. Almost all the female teachers in the school have a crush on this man. Even some students. Mr George is a very good looking man. Good looking? He's hella handsome. Plus, he's single, making every single female teacher wanna be the lucky woman but Mr. George doesn't pay attention to them. He says his sole business is to impact knowledge and turn blind eyes to all distractions.
And I admire him for that. Most men would have taken advantage of the women but he didn't.
"Morning Mr. George" Margaret, the number one flirt in the class said in a very flirtatious voice. Mr. George shook his head and smiled.
"It's good to have you all back after the long holiday. Most of you didn't come for the summer class. Adrian, Andrew, Zee , Emily and Abigail..
He trailed off as his gaze went to me. I gave an apologetic bow and he smiled. I guess his gaze on me made other people to turn thier attention to me and that's what I hate - attention.
"Why didn't you come? It's unlike you to miss a summer class." He said adjusting his collar and I smiled faintly.
"I...I traveled due to personal reasons but I attended a summer school in one of the school where I traveled."
For some reason, my voice came out hoarse but I quickly cleared my throat to bring it back to normal.
"Oh...I thought as much."
He turned his attention to another student and I sighed as I looked sideways. Turns out Andrew's gaze was on me before Mr George turned his attention away from me. I looked away slowly and I heard a light chuckle from him.
"So.. Mr Adrian, it's no news you always miss summer school. Let's here your flimsy excuse for not coming this time."
The class erupted with laughter and Adrian shook his head.
"I um...
"Didn't know there was a summer school?" Mr. George helped him complete his statement and Adrian winked at him, signifying that he was correct.
"You are one crazy dude." Emily said and Mr George just chuckled.
"Andrew?"
"Um... Mr George, I didn't mean not to come it's just.... sigh..to be honest I didn't feel like coming"
The class roared with another round of laughter and I just shook my head. I turned my head to the window and watched how the birds flew in the air. That was enough for me to lose concentration from the class.
Class ended after 40mins and we had two more subjects, English and Civics, before the short break.
I picked my purse from my bag and proceeded to the cafeteria.
•BACK IN THE CLASS•
"Hmm..I see, so you think we wouldn't know?"
A girl with putting on black biker jacket gazed hard at Adrian as she asked that question. Adrian sighed and gave a fake laugh.
"I knew you would."
"So let me guess...she asked you out like other girls do?"
"Zee come on, not all girls are like that." Emily cut in without tearing her gaze off her phone.
"Ahem! Well, I asked her out." Adrian said and Andrew oohed.
Adrian is known for not asking girls out. He doesn't really confess his feelings for a girl and he hardly falls for a girl.
Most times, girls fall in love with him. He's like the "Ladies man".
Well, yes, Andrew also gets some confessions but he declines if he isn't interested but that ain't the case for Adrian. Even if he isn't interested but the girl is super beautiful and endowed, he'll surely go for it. So hearing that he asked a girl out is kind of a shocker cos Adrian isn't the type of guy to ask girls out.
"So, you started with...from the day I met you, my heart has been quivering for your....
"Oh hell no!"
Adrian interrupted Emily before she could even complete her super cringy statement.
"Why go that length? I just told her I like her and she asked me why and I told her because she was beautiful"
Zeemah hissed making her earn a questioning look from Andrew.
"Why that?
"I thought you've finally changed but nah...you're still the idiot I've always known. You asked her out because she's beautiful?"
Zeemah asked unbelievably.
"Why else will a guy like a girl?" Adrian clearly doesn't see what's wrong with his statement.
"So what if she wasn't beautiful?" Emily asked
"Why would I ask out a girl who isn't beautiful?"
"You're one hell of a guy!"
Zeemah said, turning her head from his face to the book in her hands
"What? I'm just me, I'm not like Andrew, the lovey guy. I don't do stuff like that. I like you, we date and we go our separate ways after 3 months max!"
Zeemah casted him a "Seriously?" Look and shook her head. It's no news to them that Adrian is unserious when it comes to the aspect of love. For the past 6 years that the squad has been together, Adrian has never said a sincere "I Love You" to a girl. He's just not like that and everybody knows.
Andrew was about to speak when they heard a crashing sound which diverted thier attention to it's direction
"I'm sorry."
The guy beside the bag shelve said with an awkward smile, seems he somehow made all the bags to fall from the shelve to the ground on top eachother.
"Just rearrange them...how did you even let them fall Jackson?" Zeemah asked and Jackson laughed at his clumsiness
Jackson, Andrew and Adrian live close to eachother and they went to the same elementary school. Jackson is also close to the guys but he isn't like a member of thier squad, he's just a close buddy
"Sorry, Drew we gotta talk?"
"Bout' what?"
"Wait...let me arrange these."
Jackson bent down to the bags and started arranging them, the squad diverted thier attention from him back to whatever they were doing before.
Abigail's POV
I gulped down my caramel latte in a go and gave a satisfactory smile. The school's cafeteria sells the best latte. I wonder who is the brain behind this magnificent drink.
I disposed my cup in the recycle bin before I proceeded to the class, I got in and sat on my seat quietly.
I brought out the new novel I bought last week. It's titled "Hellbound With You" by Author Kassnlex. I just started a week ago and I must say, I'm loving it. It's over 500 chapters and I'm already in chapter 200. The main male character, Alex Qin is a very mysterious character and his female lead, Abigail Chen, is so innocent and naive. I can't wait to see how things would unfold between the cold and mysterious Alex and innocent and naive Abigail.
=======
After 5 more classes and a break, school finally was over. I couldn't go home straight cos Principal Douglas sent a student to call me.
Principal Douglas is a 54 years old woman. She's a strict disciplinarian and also a charming and funny woman. She's probably asking of me to ask about the well-being of my dad and sisters. Yeah, she's that caring.
After 20mins with the Principal, I proceeded back to the class to get my bag. The class was already empty when I got back. Every student has left with his or her bag, mine was still resting on the shelf. I strapped my back and off I went back home to my lovely family.
========
"Sis!"
Jas, my immediate younger sister squealed as she saw me come into the house. She hugged me tight and I grinned before hugging her back.
Jasmine is two years younger than me, due to her health, she isn't going to the same school as I am. Jasmine is a SS (Sickle Cell Anemia) patient.
She has been advised by countless doctors we've been to not to stress herself. She goes to a school that's just a stone throw from our house.
She would have gone to the same school as mine but my school is kinda far. Well, for her it is and Harvard High doesn't have a school bus.
"Sister Abi!" Dinah, the youngest, came running to me in just her panties. I chuckled and carried her up, twirling her around.
My parents gave birth to four children, all are girls. I'm the oldest, followed by Jasmine, Kelly and Dinah the last.
"How was school?" Jas asked as she unstrapped my bag from my back.
"Hey, you're back!" Kelly beamed as she appeared from behind the 3 sitter couch in the living room. I wonder what she was doing there.
"Yeah, where's dad?"
"Sleeping"
I put down Dinah and walked to dad's room. I tiptoed in and I almost laughed at his sleeping position. I tiptoed to the side of the bed and started tickling his ear, that's his tickle spot
He waved his hand trying to shoo the "fly" that was disturbing his peaceful sleep.
"Wakey wakey" I whispered and he slowly opened his eyes.
I laughed when he casted me a sleepy glare
"When did you return?" He asked sheepishly
"Just now"
He yawned tiredly and I chuckled. Poor dad, he just returned from a two weeks trip last night and he is completely drained of everything energy. He is the only parent which makes him work so hard just to satisfy our needs.
Mum died when I was just 13 years. That's five years ago while giving birth to Dinah.
It was the most heartbreaking thing that ever happened to my dad and I. I technically became the "mother" at the age of 13.
My dad refused to allow any family member live with us but he made my aunt stay till Dinah was one year. He hasn't even remarried till this day. It was hard for me at first. I had to start waking up so early, take care of my sisters, looking after a one year old troublesome baby wasn't an easy job for a 13 year old girl. I almost went down mentally but I had to be strong.
We scaled through and we are doing better than I expected we would.
"Should I make you toast?"
"Yes thank you." he mumbled in his sleepy voice and I nodded.
I quietly left his room to mine. I changed into a white blouse and a pair of jean shorts . I let my ponytail down and proceeded to the kitchen
"Whatchu doing?" Dinah asked as she came to the kitchen.
"Toast."
"Make some for me please?" She said, batting her eyelashes cutely.
"Me too."
"Me three."
I huffed at the three of em.
"Do how was first day in 9th grade Jas?" I asked
"Well..." She began as she took a bite out of the banana in her hand. Jas has a strict diet she must follow. She mustn't eat oily foods, junk food and too much of carbohydrate. She mostly eats fish, vegetables, fruits and nuts and she drinks a lot of water. She's allowed to take milkshakes and natural fruit juices and not any other drinks. She can take soda but not too much.
I just feel for so sad for her. She can't run round the field like other kids, she can't play too long in the snow except when thickly clothed. She can't stuff her stomach with chocolate and too much ice cream. Just a slight hit can cause a problem. Its just so hard
"Well what?"
"A guy said hi to me."
I noticed the shy blush on her cheeks and I grinned teasingly.
"Let me guess, this guy you're talking about is...
"Zeke!" Kelly and Dinah chorused and I laughed. Zeke is the dude Jas has been crushing on since like...forever.
So this is kind of a big deal.
"So just hi? That's it?" I asked as I plugged in the toasting machine.
"No, we um..we had lunch together, he even walked me home."
Watching Jasmine smile dreamingly is the most satisfying thing ever!
"So technically, we should be expecting a brother-in-law."
"What now?"
We all turned to the direction of the voice that came from behind us.
"Brother-in- what?" Dad asked again as he walked towards us and I laughed out loud.
"Well, Jasmine got a boyfriend." Kelly said before any of us could open our mouths.
"Hell nah!"
"Come on dad, it's a good thing. Aren't you happy that one of your daughters is talking about a boy? Just take a look at Abigail, she's 18 and she has never ever for once talked about a guy!"
Dad laughed at Kelly's statement and I casted her a glare.
"Come on Kelly, that's not a bad thing. Non of you should get a boyfriend until you're 21 years old."
Dinah spit out the water in her mouth immediately dad said that.
"No boyfriend until...dad, you're not serious are you?" Kelly asked and I shook my head
"I am, what exactly do you need a boyfriend for at age 16?"
"A lot of things! Dad, Zeke is a really great guy. You'll love him once you meet him."
Jasmine sounded so sure of herself as she tried to convince dad. But I know dad well, even if he permits her to date Zeke, Zeke is gonna experience a 5 hours interview and talk on the rules and regulations he has to follow. Dad can be really over protective.
"Your toast is ready." I announced but they seemed to be engrossed in their argument about boys.
"Boys are just distractions Jasmine, I mean, you'll surely breakup one way or the other so why try?"
"Dad, don't be pessimistic. Who knows, they might end up dating for a long time and get married in the future." Kelly chipped in.
I shook my head before walking out of the kitchen, I went to my room and slumped on the bed as I got in
"Just take a look at Abigail, she's 18 and she has never ever for once talked about a guy!"
I remembered Kelly's statement and I sighed. I've never talked about a boy but how are you so sure I don't think of one?
I sat up and picked up my school bag from the floor. I opened it and I was about to pick out my note when I sighted something. It was a black headphone. What is this doing in my bag? I don't remember having a black headphone.
I picked it out and examined it for a while. Wait, I've seen this with someone before. I placed the gadget on the bed and picked out a note, I opened the note and an unfamiliar handwriting welcomed me. This isn't my handwriting.
I checked the name written on the front page and.....ANDREW HEATHER?!!
Wait, how? When? Why the heck is his note in my bag? I emptied all the bag contents on my bad and I ransacked through them. They are all his notes and belongings. Could this be... Could this be his bag?
My mind went back to school, trying to figure out how exactly I could have mistaken his bag for mine.
But wait, I met only my bag on the shelf when I got to class this afternoon so that means...
Oh no!
He has my own bag too?!
I flopped on my bed with a loud whine. Different thoughts were running through my mind. What am I gonna do? I have to return his bag back to him. How will I approach him? I definitely can't talk to him in the midst of his weird and crazy friends. And I have homework to do but my bag is with him. Should I do his? But how am I so sure that he will do mine?
"Yeah, yeah, yeah boombayah, yah, yah yiyah whoooo!!"
"Keep it down out there!" I screamed in frustration at my sisters who were at the other side of of my bedroom, singing loudly.
On a normal day, I wouldn't have screamed like that but I'm just so frustrated and mad!
Of all people in the class, I chose to mistake Andrew Heather's bag for mine.
"Whoa are you okay sis?"
Kelly asked, popping her head in front the side of the door. I turned to face her with a pout that says "I wanna cry." I adverted my gaze from her face and fell face flat on the bed with a groan.
Andrew's POV
"Yeah so I'll meet you there right? 4pm latest... Is Patricia coming? Sweet! See you there soon."
I brought down my phone from my ear and proceeded inside the house.
I stopped on my tracks when a sweet aroma hit my nose. Immediately, I trailed the sweet and mouth watering aroma to it's source and as expected, Granny is working her magic in the kitchen.
"Granny, Granny, Granny. Performing some wonders in the kitchen I see"
She turned back and her perfect dentition spread out in a smile.
"You're back."
"Hmm."
I hugged her from the back and pecked her on the cheek. I've been living with my Gran since I was five. I had to come live with her because my mum isn't in the States but in Canada. She's there, running some business to meet my needs. My dad? Well, I don't really know much about him. All I know is that him and my mum aren't really on good terms.
I don't really know what happened between them both and I really don't wanna know. I won't be surprised if the issue came from my dad's promiscuous character. He visits once in a while but we aren't close.
"So, how was school?"
I entangled my arms from her body and leaned on the kitchen island
"Not bad for first day of resumption."
I picked a apple from the fruit basket and took a bite out of it. I really love apples
"Hmm, your mum called while you were out."
"Really?"
I get all excited and happy whenever mum calls. I'm nineteen years and still, I can't do without my mum. A day can't pass by without me hearing her voice.
"Yeah, she said she'll visit soon. Probably next month or November"
As I heard that, I jumped up in excitement like a little kid who just received a free ice cream.
"You know, I'm starting to think you're a five year old"
"Come on Ben, leave the little boy alone"
Granny said to Uncle Ben, my mum's younger brother. Uncle Ben is grandma's last child. She gave birth to 4 children in total - Uncle Dean, Aunt Selena, My mum and lastly, Uncle Ben. Uncle Ben is the only one, among grandma's children that hasn't married yet. He's 32, successful and a full package of what I call handsomeness.
Granny is just 67 but she looks like a woman in her mid-fifties.
I turned to Uncle Ben and he gave me a teasing grin
"Yeah, leave me be and also, grandma I'm not a little boy. Your grandson is nineteen years, soon to be twenty." I said proudly
"Ha!" Uncle Ben gave a sarcastic laugh and I shot him a glare.
"Yeah, my little boy has grown into a big boy."
Granny pinched my cheeks and I gave a cheesy smile .
"A big bad boy if I may add." Uncle Ben chipped in
"Yeah, he got that from his dad tsk tsk."
Granny shook her head and I laughed before giving her a forehead peck.
"Let me go freshen up."
"Good call cos you stink."
"I smell better than your boxers Uncle Ben."
I ran for my dear life before he could even think of chasing me. I got into my room and fell face flat on my bed. I unstrapped my bad and started putting off my uniform. I wrapped a towel round my waist as soon as I finished undressing. I walked to the bathroom with my mp3 player with me. I pressed on play and Justin Bieber's "Yummy" boomed.
Done with bathing, I came out of the bathroom with droplets of water dropping from my hair down to the tiled floor. I hummed along to the song that was being played as I opened my wardrobe, searching got what to wear. I finally settled for a blue T - shirt and a pair of black silk shorts. I put on the clothes and brushed back my already dried hair with my fingers.
"I need my headphones." I mumbled to myself as I opened my backpack.
For up to a minute now, I've been looking for my headphones and surprisingly, it wasn't there. Did I give it to Adrian? Maybe I did.
I was about zipping up my bag when my eyes caught something that looked like a girlish pink purse. What the...is this for Emily? I've never seen this purse with her before and this purse doesn't look like what Zee would think of buying.
I brought out the purse and examined it for a little while before I opened it. The first thing I saw was a school ID. I brought it out and my eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Abigail Howard? How did her belonging get into my... Wait a sec!
I poured out all the bag contents and widened my eyes. Girly pencils, a novel, a pair of shades? I didn't even put these in my bag before I left for school. My eyes went to the school books and I sighed in realization. Now I get it, this is Abigail's bag. But why does it look exactly like mine? Could it be that we both mistakenly switched our bag? If that's the case then she's probably with my bag right now.
I chuckled at the thought of that and hummed before I started rearranging the contents back into the bag. I put all back into the bag except for the novel. I laid flat on my bed and studied the front page of the novel for a while.
"Hellbound With You" I read the title out and smirked. Sounds interesting. I opened the novel to chapter one and started reading
"I'll probably read just 10 chapters." I said to myself. Or so I thought.
Abigail's POV
"It's 8pm dumbass, it's pretty late, and I'm pretty sure dad can't let you go out by this time."
"Ow come on Jasmine! I really need that ice cream. You know how sweet Mr. Donald's ice cream tastes."
"I'm pretty sure your sugar level is above 160 because of the amount of sweet and junks you take."
Dad said to Kelly as he handed her her plate of food. We are all gathered at the dinning, ready for dinner. I placed Dinah's food in front of her and she smiled before saying...
"Thank you Abby."
"You're welcome sweetie."
I gave her a peck on the cheek and took my seat. I dug into my food gently and started to eat. Jasmine's phone rang and it caused dad to stop eating. Jas smiled apologetically because she just broke dad's number one dinner rule : "All phones must be placed on silent or turned off while eating dinner."
At first, it was " No phone allowed during dinner." But, he thought deeply about it and yeah, he changed it. Jasmine said a small "sorry" before she picked up the call. I noticed her eyes gleam for a minute before she wiped the expression off her face. I wonder who the caller is that's making Jasmine gleam.
"Um..I'll talk to you later, I'm..I'm having dinner. Yeah."
She brought down the phone from her ear and she placed it on the table.
"Sorry dad." She apologized and dad sighed. Dad is always cautious of how he gets mad at us. Whenever he was really mad at any of us, it's either he scolds us immediately or stay silent for some days before calling the offender out.
He just doesn't like getting aggravated towards any of us.
"It's fine Jasmine."
"It will never happen again."
"Water... Water, I can't reach."
I watched as Dinah tried to reach the water jug. Watching her try to reach the jug is so amusing. Her arms her pretty short so she couldn't get hold of the jug.
"Here, I'll pour some for you."
Kelly offered to help and she did. She poured Dinah a cup of water and stretched it to her. Dinah mouthed a thank you before gulping it down in one shot.
"Light it up like dynamite!"
Dinah sang as she ate. Dynamite by BTS has been Dinah's favorite song since the song was released. Who am I kidding? It's everybody's favorite song. Kelly loves it, Jasmine is addicted to it and dad also jam to the beat anytime it's being played. I gotta say, I'm a big fan of BTS.
I got to know them last two years and since then, I've been their biggest fan. Who could have thought 7 South Korean young boys would become as successful as they are.
"Dinah, you're so obsessed with BTS ." Dad said
"Who wouldn't be?" Kelly asked and I nodded in approval.
"I mean, it's BTS we are talking about here. The biggest kpop sensation in the world right now. Like...hello?"
"I know right?" I added
"I don't know why you love them this much." Dad said shaking his head in amusement.
"Because they are different. I mean, it's the twenty first century and almost all songs put out now are mostly about : sex, drugs, partying and the likes but BTS... BTS proved they are different. They sing about self love, happiness, self acceptance. Their songs have beautiful relatable lyrics and strong messages. Which most music right now doesn't have."
"Preach Kelly Preach!" I cheered Kelly on and dad just chuckled. He knows that when it comes for argument, Kelly is always on the front row seat.
"Geez, it would have been so better if you've put this much effort in your last exam. Maybe you wouldn't have scored a F in history." Jasmine said and she got nothing but a glare from Kelly. Kelly sucks at History. We all do. Tch!
The rest of dinner went on in silence. After dinner, I went to my room and collapsed on my bed. It wasn't long before sleep took me far away.
•THE NEXT DAY•
Okay Abby, you can do this. Just get to class, go to the shelf and exchange the bags without him knowing. Why can't I just give it to him personally? Gosh why?
Am I...am I scared of that dude? No! No! I'm not scared of anyone. Never!
I took a deep breath before I stepped into the class. My eyes went straight to Andrew's seat and nope, he isn't yet in school.
I sat on my seat after placing Andrew's bag on the shelf. I placed my head on my desk and zoned off. I was brought back to reality when noise started to build up in the class and that could only mean one thing. I raised my head up and.. Holy Moly, he's here. Andrew's here!
Okay okay, just walk to him and give him his bag. I stood up from my seat and to my surprise, my feet weren't moving. Why aren't you moving Abby? He's a human like you, don't be so scared! Damn!
Okay here we go...
I'm going now!
In 3, 2, and....dammit! Abby just move!
"Um...are you, are you okay?"
My head turned slowly to the back and my orbs met with Zina's
"Um...I'm good."
"Okay, you just looked as if you were having an internal battle with yourself." She said jokingly and I gave a silent fake laugh.
As a matter of fact, I'm having an internal battle with myself! Why can't I just walk to the dude? It's not like he spits fire.
I gave myself a mental spank before I sat back down. I turned my head slowly to Andrew and his attention was on Emily. They were both talking. No problem, I'll give him his bag during break. Or I'll just switch it without him knowing.
Well, it's break and yeah, I'm on my seat, waiting for Andrew to exit the class so I can switch the bags but for the past 15 minutes! Andrew hasn't gotten up from his seat. Should I tell you what he's doing?
Well, he's reading my novel. So technically, he's aware our bags are switched but he isn't doing anything about it? He's acting so indifferent! Just give me my bag. Is he expecting me to approach him first? Humph! What an proud jerk!
Giving up, I exited the class to get something to eat. I'm tired of waiting for him to get his ass out of the class.
After eating, I went back to class and found him in the same position. I shook my head in frustration and went to my seat. Andrew! You jerk!
=========
*Riiiing!*
The electric bell roared, signifying the end of the day. Before I could blink, Andrew already went to the shelf and carried "his" bag. What the?
I rushed to the shelf and carried his bag, I proceeded outside the school, looking for the jerk. Where the hell is he? Oh, today is Tuesday. The guys always have soccer practice after school on Tuesdays. That means I have to wait after school? No way!
I have to find him!
I went to the school field but didn't find anyone there. They are probably changing in the locker room. I bit my lips in frustration and proceeded to go back to the class.
I pushed my way into the class and screamed in frustration
"Andrew Heather you jerk!"
"Ouch! Words hurt ya know."
That particular voice made me turn abruptly. There he was, leaning against the classroom wall with his hands tucked into his pocket. I gasped when I realized he just heard what I said.
"Abigail Howard, I believe you have what's mine?"
I blinked rapidly, trying not to be bewitched by his super cool and mesmerizing voice.
Seeing him standing there like a cool and handsome highschool boy that he is makes him look so alluring.
"Abigail Howard, I believe you have what's mine?"
"What's... What's yours?"
I asked like a dummy. Of course I have what's his. I have his bag! Why did I just spill rubbish? Why am I feeling necessary nervousness? It isn't obvious but my heart is beating so loud and rapidly. Don't tell me, don't tell me the feelings of three years ago are still there.
Naaah, that can't be possible. One can't have a crush on a guy for over three years. I'm completely over him. Get yourself together Abby! I cleared my throat and lifted my head to his face. He had a quizzical expression on. Probably because of my stupid question.
"What do I have that's yours?"
I asked again and he raised his brow. His gaze went to his bag which was strapped on my back. I sighed lowly and took off the bag. I stretched it to him and instead of him collecting it, he stood there with his hands tucked in his pocket and a sly smirk plastered on his face. I drew back my hand and folded my arms on my chest with my hips cocked.
"Won't you collect it?" I asked with a bold voice and his throaty chuckle erupted throughout the empty class.
"Were you waiting for me to come ask personally? Why didn't you give me the moment you got to school?" He asked and I scoffed loudly with an eye roll.
"You're unbelievable." I said turning my head to the side. "You were waiting for me to come ask for my bag myself?" I asked turning my head back to face him. All he gave to my question was a nonchalant shrug.
"Why exactly will I come to you first? You also had my bag with you why didn't you give me the moment you got to school? Or are you some President or celeb?"
"Abigail Howard right?"
I frowned at his unexpected question. What kind of question is that? What if I am?
"Yeah so?" I asked rudely
He took a step closer and I subconsciously stepped back. He leaned closer to my face and I almost lost it when his face became so close. Our faces were just few inches apart. I pushed him away from me and cleared my throat uneasily.
"Wha... What are you trying to do? J.. Just take your bag and give me mine."
I tried to sound like I had control of myself but my voice betrayed me. I sounded really flustered. I brushed away the strands of hair on my face and clasped my palm together.
"You look so quiet and gentle all the time but now that I'm talking to you up close you seem so....
He trailed off, searching for the right words to use.
"Interesting." He said with a wide grin and I almost rolled my eyes.
Catching him off guard, I shoved his backpack into his chest. He hugged the bag to himself and I huffed at him. He gave a lopsided smile before he unstrapped my bag. He took off the bag and unexpectedly, he threw it towards me.
Luckily, I caught it. I glared at him and he gave me a "what" look.
"What? Oh so it's fine when you shoved mine?"
I eyed him before I strapped my bag. Without any further glance, I rushed out of the class. I placed my palm on my chest trying to suppress my heartbeat. Damn! What kind of show did just put off in there? I've never been so bold in my life!
"Gosh!" I mumbled to myself as I finally stepped out of school. Today has been a very long day. I'm so tired and hungry. I hummed as I skipped home happily. I'm going to visit a friend today at the coffee shop where he works per time.
As I pushed my way into the coffee shop, the bell above the door dinged. I sighted Alexander, my friend, at the counter, Arranging some cups in a white tray. I smiled as I walked towards him.
"Hey!" I called excitedly and he raised up his head. His lips stretched out in a smile as his eyes met with mine. Alexander is a 21 year old college student. He lost his dad at a young age of 15 and it has been only him, his younger sister and his mum. His mum knits to support the family and Alexander does any job that comes his way, as long as he can earn.
Things have been tough for him and his mum that he couldn't resume to school this year. His sister, Molly, is just 10 years and in final year of elementary school. As the last child, she depends on her mum and brother for almost everything so Alex always see to it that his sister gets enough of everything she wants. He doesn't spend his earned money on himself but on his mum and sister. He's so selfless and I feel so bad for him.
"You're back. You're kinda late tho."
"Yeah." I said through gritted teeth as I remembered that annoying jerk. "So how have too been?" My expression changed in a flash.
"Well..." He breathed out "I've been doing better than normal. And guess what?"
"What?"
"Remember my book I contracted on Webnovel?"
"Yeah...what about it?"
"It has been signed and now I can enjoy writers benefit."
"Wait, so you mean you're gonna get paid every month?" I asked in enthusiasm and he nodded
"I'm so happy for you!" I screamed excitedly and he quickly shushed me.
"Keep it down. There are customers jeez."
"Sorry. I'm just so happy. And your book is super dope. You're so talented. I just wish I was as talented as you are."
"Come on, stop flattering me."
"I'm not." I said with all seriousness. "To be honest your works are masterpieces. Before you even started sharing your story on the platform, I've always been your audience and read your stories. You deserve the award of the best author alive. To be candid."
"Thank you Abby. You know the right buttons to press to make me unnecessary hyped."
"That's my job, I'm your mood lifting fairy."
I flipped my hair back stylishly and he laughed.
"You're crazy!"
======
I left Alex's place an hour later, I didn't wanna get home late so I left that early. Normally I stay there for more than an hour. I spend almost 3 hours with him anytime he's off duty but he's kinda busy today so...
I was about to take a left turn when I sighted someone familiar. It seems the person also saw me because she stopped walking as soon as she saw me. We both stopped on our tracks as stared back at each other. When did she return? She scoffed with a smirk and walked some inches closer.
"What? Surprised to see me?"
I gave a fake smile and spoke...
"Hi, when did you return?" I asked and she cocked her hips. Her gaze roamed up and down my body and I cleared my throat uneasily.
"Hmm, so you're still going to that school huh."
She said the "that" with so much disgust. I thought we stopped being friends a long time ago so why this conversation? I shouldn't have stopped when I saw her in the first place. I made to leave but she held my arm, stopping me from moving.
"Calm down, why the rush? It's a good thing I ran into you today because... I'm gonna need your books."
"Books?"
"Yeah, your school books. Because I have been absent for some days now and I'll have to copy the notes I missed won't I?"
Days? Did she just say days?
"Copy the notes you... What exactly are you talking about?"
She gave a chuckle and stepped closer to me with our heads almost touching. The once mischievous smile on her face has been replaced with her signature mean frown.
"What am I talking about? I'm coming back that's what I'm talking about. You think I'm just gonna give up? When I want something I get it by all means. Even you should've known that by now. I didnt leave Harvard High. I just took a break, a very long break. I'm back now....
She stepped back and inch from me. Whoa, finally I can breath.
"I'm back to take what's mine."
"Agatha, don't do anything stupid."
"Anything stupid? Like trying to get back with my ex boyfriend who my ex best friend still has feelings for?"
Blood drained from my face as she said that.
"What? Or am I wrong? You still have feelings for him don't you?" She asked demandingly
"I don't think I have to answer that question because there's no point in answering. Whether my answer is yes or no, you'll still go ahead and make a fool out of yourself. The only advice I'm gonna give as your ex best friend is that, do not try to win him back, you'll end up losing an that'll be a big embarrassment for you."
"Who told you I'm gonna lose? You sound so sure."
"Because I'm sure."
"Just shut the hell up!"
"Fine, I will. I just hope you won't regret whatever you're planning."
With that, I took one last smile and turned back to leave. I walked few steps away before her voice stopped me.
"And by the way, it better not be that you still have feelings for him. If you do then kill the goddamn feelings!"
She said heartlessly without any hint of warmth in her voice. I walked on without taking a single glance after her after she said that. Agatha! She has always been selfish, mischievous, greedy and a good pretender. I just failed to realize that in a very long time.
My mind went back to when we were in 10th grade and I sighed. Why did I become her friend back then in the first place?
•ONE YEAR AGO•
Abigail's POV
"Feels good to be back huh Abby?"
"I know right, it has been a really long holiday. I really miss school. Oh and Agatha, do you remember the boy that...
As I turned to my side to look at her, she was no longer there. I sighed deeply as I looked ahead. As expected, she was with Andrew. I should have gotten used to this already. We were going to part ways anyways. Now, I won't see her for the whole day again.
Few months ago I noticed that Agatha always avoid me anytime we are in school. She doesn't accompany me to the cafeteria, she changed her seat just so she could be far away from me, we don't even walk home together again.
Anytime we closed from school, she always finds a way to tell me to wait for her at a junction. So we meet at the junction where there are no students, and we walk home together.
I've always wondered, why exactly? We've been best friends for a long time and all of a sudden she became so distant that I don't know who she is anymore. The Agatha now isn't that Agatha I knew two years ago. Now she hangs with Andrew and his friends. She recently started to crush on Andrew and with the look of things, Andrew has fallen hard for her. Why won't he anyways? She's pretty, curvy and stylish. The type of girl Andrew and any guy would love to date. Not me, some boring, quiet chic. That's why my feelings for Andrew is just a waste. Maybe I wouldn't have fallen for him if he hadn't shared my umbrella that day and walked me home.
I shook my head sadly before I proceeded to my class. I got to my class and went straight to my seat. Here comes another boring and stupid day!
"Hey, everybody listen up!"
The voice caught everyone's attention and we all stopped whatever we were doing to listen to the attention caller.
"So... I have an announcement to make."
Andrew said as he took Agatha's hand in his. Agatha couldn't stop a sneaky blush from creeping up her face. She's completely smitten by this guy.
"Agatha and I are dating."
Just as I heard that, my smile fell and I felt a sting in my heart. I couldn't help but place my palm on my chest because it felt as if my heart got shattered into pieces. They are already dating? I don't have a chance anymore. Even if they weren't dating I still wouldn't have a chance.
The least I can do for my friend now is to be happy for her. Despite the burning pain in my chest, I joined the loud cheers and started clapping alongside with others.
"Congratulations!" I screamed, even if I was crying inside. I've never felt this way in my entire life.
I've had feelings for Andrew for over five months now. I know I would end up getting hurt at the end because he'll most definitely not fall for me but I took the risk and harbored the feelings.
This feels like I've been rejected in the worst way possible.
======
After school, as usual, I waited for Agatha at the junction. I stayed for over an hour but she didn't show up. I tried her number but it was no use. She didn't pick up the phone. I sighed tiredly before standing up from the bench on which I have been sitting on for over an hour.
Did she leave without me? Maybe I should go home. I started my journey home with different thoughts running through my mind. She knew she wouldn't go home with me today, why didn't she say so? She would have called me secretly, like she always does whenever she wanted to tell me something, and told me not to wait for her.
I huffed loudly as I finally got to the front gate of my house. I got in and went straight to my room without answering my sisters' greetings. I slumped on my bed and groaned. I'm so hungry and tired
I sat up and picked up my phone from bed. I put a call through to Agatha but she didn't pick. Then I decided to send her a message.
"Agatha, you should have told me not to wait."
I clicked on send and my phone dinged after 5 minutes.
"Sorry"
Sorry? Just that? Don't I deserve some explanation? I stayed in the hot afternoon sun for over an hour. Shouldn't she apologize more?
"Sorry?"
I typed and sent.
"Yeah, sorry. What else do you wanna hear?"
"Nothing..um..congrats on your new relationship."
"Yeah thanks."
"You're welcome."
I waited for her reply but I got none. It has always been like this. Despite her rude, unmannered and mean attitude, I'm still friends with her. I don't know why. Maybe because I don't really have any other person to be friends with.
I sighed and switched off my phone. Closing my eyes to have some sleep. Maybe an hour or two of sleep will take this pain in feeling away
======
Agatha and Andrew have been dating for three months now. My feelings for Andrew are finally fading away slowly and I couldn't be anymore thankful. My relationship with Agatha isn't smooth anymore. She gets angry over little things I do and whenever she has a fault in something, she'll find a manipulative way to shift all the blame on me, making me seem like the one at fault. She has always been like that.
She ceased talking to me 2 weeks ago and believe me, I'm more than grateful. I didn't think I could keep up with the toxic friendship anymore.
I'm returning from a pharmacy. I went to get pain relievers for my aching knee. It's quite chilly this evening and I didn't put on something think.
As I walked on, I sighted two figures approaching - a male and a female's. I recognize the female figure to be Agatha but the male... That's definitely not Andrew.
But who else would Agatha be all lovey dovey with if not Andrew. A stranger that sees this two will surely take them as a couple because the male's arm was wrapped round Agatha's waist and Agatha kept her arms wrapped round the guy's waist also.
I was about to dismiss the very possible thought that was creeping into my head when the guy bent and gave Agatha a kiss. Just as I saw that, I stopped on my tracks, mouth agape.
They didn't seem to notice me because they were engrossed in their lovey dovey act.
Agatha finally turned her head to the front and her eyes met mine. She quickly pushed the guy away from her as soon as she saw me. Her walking steps became uneasy as we approached one another. The guy looked confused as to why she would push him away suddenly like that.
I didn't glance at her as I walked on, I kept my eyes fixed on the phone I was pressing. We finally passed by each other and that was when I looked up. I shook my head as we bypassed. Poor Andrew! He doesn't know he's being played by manipulative Agatha.
I hummed to myself. He's too perfect to be heartbroken. Damn! Agatha!
I finally got home and I went to my room. I applied the pain killer and laid on my bed. Tomorrow is Saturday. What exactly am I gonna do tomorrow? Nothing I guess.
The next day, I woke up at exactly 9 am. I cleaned my room, brushed my teeth and proceeded to the kitchen to make breakfast. My sisters woke up and hour after me and they did their necessary chores.
After cooking, I took my bathe and resumed to the movie I just downloaded. It's a K - drama titled "Angel's Last Mission." It has 20 episodes and one episodes is over an hour each.
After 5 hours of watching K- drama, I decided to go for a walk. I stepped out and started my walk with my earpiece in my ear. I walked to a nearby park and took a rest on the field. I had a novel with me so I started reading. I read for about an hour before my phone rang. I picked it up and checked the caller.
"Jas what's up?"
"Agatha is here."
I sat up from my sleeping position as I heard that.
"She's here? For what?"
"She's here for you. Why else would she be here?"
"Okay, tell her I'll be there in 20 minutes."
"Kay kay."
I dipped my phone into my back pocket and started to jog back home. By the time I got home, I was already out of breath. I leaned on the front door, trying to stabilize my breathing.
"Where's she?" I asked Jasmine immediately I got in.
"Your room."
I thanked her and went to my room. I met Agatha standing with her back facing me.
"Agatha."
I called lowly and she turned to face me, slowly. My eyes went to what she had in her hand and my eyes widened in horror. H.. How did she get that?
"A..Agatha."
I shuttered. I was really scared. In her hand, she had my diary. My diary contains everything that has very happened to me. Everything! I mean everything!
The expression on her face is nothing close to calm. She looks enraged, mad and.. And...she just looks so mad! Her eyes were blazing with fire. If looks could kill, I would be 10 feet under the ground.
"So...because you had a crush on him, you went to tell him about what you saw yesterday right? Because of what exactly? You think you have a chance with him?"
My expression changed from nervous to confused as she said that.
"What do you mean?"
"Oh cut the crap! You went to tell him what you saw yesterday just so he could break up with me and date you? Well, are you happy now? He has broken up with me all because of you!"
She screamed in anger and all that register in my brain was...
"He broke up with you?"
