Chapter 1 The Beginning

Early in the morning at Morning Sun High School, the atmosphere was bustling. The students were busy with their own affairs. However, amidst the crowd, there was a beautiful girl named Sandra who became the center of attention.

Sandra was very popular in her school. She had a beautiful face, long black hair, and a captivating smile. Many boys at the school had a crush on her.

But don't get it wrong. Despite being very popular, Sandra was a laid-back girl. She didn't like to talk much and preferred to observe people from a distance. Sandra often spent her time alone in the library, reading books to pass the time.

One day, while Sandra was hanging out in the library, a transfer student came and sat right next to her. Sandra glanced and saw a handsome guy with messy black hair and sharp brown eyes. His name was Samuel.

The next day, as Samuel walked towards his classroom, suddenly a few of his friends approached him.

"Hey, Sam. Your clothes look so shabby. Don't you have any money?" his male friend spoke in a demeaning tone.

"Oh my, Sam. How could you dress like that? It's not much different from a beggar! Don't you have money to buy new clothes?" his female friend added, and they laughed.

Samuel fell silent, then he tried to respond to his friends' behavior.

"It's true that I don't have money to buy new clothes, but what's important is that they are clean and not problematic." Samuel answered calmly and casually.

Then both of them smirked, "Look at that, he's speaking up to defend himself. From now on, let's call him Sam the beggar." Then another friend chimed in, "Yes, I agree! Let's call him Sam the beggar, hahaha... suits you!"

Samuel remained silent and smiled upon hearing his friends' remarks. Unbeknownst to them, Sandra was observing Samuel attentively from a distance. She was curious about him.

Sandra didn't realize that Samuel was currently being bullied by his friends. She noticed that Samuel seemed a bit down and awkward. She sensed a sharp intelligence aura from his facial expression.

Unlike Sandra, Samuel was not a popular student. Apart from being a new student, Samuel often became the target of bullying from his peers because they thought he came from a poor family.

The following day, in the school corridor, Sandra accidentally overheard some students talking badly about Samuel. They were mocking him, saying that Samuel was poor and couldn't afford to buy clothes like they could.

Sandra felt really annoyed listening to their conversation. However, she didn't want to get involved in their affairs. She knew well enough about their nasty behavior. Although she felt sorry for Samuel, she also didn't dare to defend him.

There was one thing that caught Sandra's attention about Samuel. He was always cheerful and friendly to everyone, even though he was often the target of bullying.

Samuel always smiled and tried to maintain his spirit, regardless of how people treated him. Sandra felt there was something interesting about Samuel that made her even more curious.

One day, while Sandra was walking in the school garden, she bumped into Samuel, who was sitting alone under a tree, engrossed in a book. Sandra thought to herself, "Wow... I think I should get to know this new guy; he seems really smart."

Without hesitation, Sandra approached him and introduced herself. "Hey, I'm Sandra. And who are you?" Sandra asked with her sweet, signature smile.

Samuel was slightly surprised to see Sandra. He felt a bit awkward but managed to return her smile. "Oh, well, my name is Samuel," he replied.

"I'm really glad to meet you, Sam," Sandra said sincerely. "I've seen you around school, but this is the first time we can talk directly."

Samuel nodded and closed his book. He was really happy to have a conversation with Sandra, despite feeling a bit awkward. "Yeah, I'm also really glad to meet and talk to you, Sandra. You're the most popular and well-known girl here, right?"

Sandra gave a small smile. "I don't know. I don't care about things related to popularity, and I prefer being alone," Sandra honestly replied. "By the way, I'm curious. Why do you often get bullied?"

Samuel sighed deeply. "I'm not from a wealthy family like them. I'm not as privileged," Samuel spoke softly. "I've learned not to care about what people say, and I focus on the positive side. I've learned to always smile and live a happy life."

Sandra was truly amazed by Samuel's words. She started to see a different side of Samuel that she had never known before. They began to talk more often and hang out together in the library and school garden.

Sandra now knew that Samuel was intelligent and talented in sports and arts. Additionally, Samuel had a unique sense of humor that could make Sandra burst into laughter.

As time went by, Sandra became more comfortable being friends with Samuel. She felt that Samuel was truly a special guy. However, on the other hand, Sandra was also confused about her own feelings. She still thought about the conversations with her other friends regarding Samuel's less privileged background, while Sandra came from a wealthy family.

A few days later, while Samuel was sitting in the cafeteria, Sandra approached him. "Hey, Samuel. How are you?"

"Oh, Sandra. I'm fine. How about you?"

"I'm good too. Hey... I heard that you often get bullied by the other students here. What actually happened?" Sandra started to become curious about the past events.

Samuel finally recounted the series of bullying incidents that had happened to him. Sandra listened attentively and started to feel emotional.

"Oh, I can't just ignore something like this! Don't worry, I'll help you," Sandra's emotions reached their peak upon hearing Samuel's story.

"No, it's okay. I'm used to things like this," Samuel replied.

"No, Daf. You shouldn't have to accept such treatment. I'll talk to them," Sandra said as she left Samuel.

Sandra hurriedly searched for the bullies and gave them a stern warning. She told them that their behavior was completely wrong and unacceptable. The bullies were extremely shocked to see Sandra angry because nobody had ever dared to confront them before.

"Hey, what's wrong with you guys? Samuel told me that you often bully him. How many times has it happened?" Sandra spoke with an angry tone and wide-eyed.

Bully 1: "Oh, it's not a big deal. We were just joking."

Sandra: "Joking? Do you think bullying is a joke? It's not funny at all. You're causing so much pain to others, and I don't like it when my friends are treated like that."

They were all taken aback. It was unusual for Sandra to raise her voice and get angry, let alone confront them.

Bully 1 could only remain silent because he had a crush on Sandra, while the bully girl stayed quiet because she knew who Sandra was. It was clear that Sandra was the darling of the school, and if she got upset, she would lose her admirers and might even be avoided by the boys there.

Finally, they dispersed with frustrated and unsatisfied expressions. Sandra then returned to Samuel with a slightly bitter smile.

"It's done, Samuel. They won't bother you anymore," Sandra assured him.

"Hey, thanks, Sandra. You really had the courage to confront them," Samuel said.

"No need to thank me. Friends support each other, and we are true friends," Sandra replied.

"I'm truly grateful, you know. It's the first time someone has stood up for me," Samuel felt touched.

"I simply dislike those who take pleasure in oppressing others, especially based on social status," Sandra spoke with a frown. "You deserve to be treated well, Samuel. You're a good person," Sandra added.

From that point on, Sandra and Samuel became very close. They frequently spent time together outside of school hours.

Chapter 2 Doubt

Sandra was very confused and anxious about her feelings for Samuel. She didn't know how to navigate her friendship with him. On one hand, Sandra felt happy and comfortable when she was with Samuel. But on the other hand, she was afraid of her friends' reactions if they found out that Sandra was close to Samuel. In their eyes, Samuel was not on the same level because he came from a poor family.

During break time, while Sandra was reading a book in the library, her friends approached her. They asked Sandra about her recent behavior of not hanging out with them as often, and they had noticed the closeness between Sandra and Samuel.

"Hey, Sandra. Lately, we've seen you hanging out with Samuel a lot. Are you guys friends?" Sarah, Sandra's close friend, started the conversation.

Sandra immediately panicked and felt nervous when she heard the question. Before Sandra could answer, the other friends started asking about the gossip as well.

"Hey, Sandra, I often see you always accompanying Samuel everywhere. Are you guys dating or something?" teased another friend.

Sandra was confused and didn't know how to respond to them. She knew that her friends wouldn't be able to accept her relationship with Samuel, whom they saw as being from a poor family.

Sandra remained silent and thought, realizing that telling the truth was wrong, but staying silent was also wrong. She was reluctant to continue lying and evading the truth. In her confusion, Sandra could only nod slowly and say that she and Samuel were just ordinary friends.

Sandra's friends fell silent, feeling confused by Sandra's behavior. Sandra felt guilty for lying and felt more pressured to keep hiding her closeness with Samuel.

Sandra wanted to be honest with Samuel about her current situation, but she was afraid of hurting his feelings. She was also afraid of her friends' reactions if they found out about their true closeness.

Meanwhile, their bond grew stronger day by day. Sandra admired Samuel's personality, which she believed was a complete package of a true man, with the only drawback being the difference in their financial backgrounds.

The next day at school, while Samuel and Sandra were engrossed in conversation in the school's backyard, coincidentally their friends passed by. Their friends' reactions were exactly as Sandra had expected. They were shocked and shaking their heads at the sight of Sandra sitting alone with Samuel.

"Sandra, why are you talking to him?" one of her friends asked in astonishment.

"Yeah, Sandra, you know he's new here and doesn't have money." Another friend chimed in.

Sandra was taken aback and puzzled to see her friends demeaning Samuel right in front of her. Samuel, hearing their comments, simply smiled. Sandra saw it from a different perspective and realized that Samuel was hurt by her friends' remarks.

"I want to know what your problem is, huh?" Sandra stood up and spoke firmly. "I don't care about his family's financial background. What matters is that he's amazing, he's cool, and I feel comfortable being friends with him." Sandra's voice grew louder.

Sandra's friends felt stunned by Sandra's response. They looked at each other with expressions of confusion.

Samuel smiled, seeing Sandra bravely defending herself, even though they were Sandra's close friends.

Sandra tried to stay strong, even though she wasn't sure whether she should defend Samuel or face her friends' opinions. She dared to speak up and defend Samuel.

After the incident in the schoolyard, the relationship between Samuel and Sandra became even more complicated and unclear. Sandra realized that her friends were starting to distance themselves and perhaps were puzzled by their closeness.

However, on the other hand, Sandra grew even closer to Samuel as she often confided in him about everything. They supported each other in every aspect.

There was one thing that bothered Sandra the most. She felt that her heart felt different when she walked with Samuel, not just as friends, but there was another feeling that made her comfortable.

Sandra was afraid to be honest because she didn't want to lose her friends. She feared becoming the subject of ridicule, not only for herself but also for Samuel, who she believed would become the target of her friends' mockery. Sandra believed her friends would no longer consider her cool.

One day, Samuel asked Sandra to meet at the café in front of the school, and Sandra agreed. Although she felt awkward, nervous, and uncomfortable, they sat in a quiet corner of the café, enjoying the delicious warm coffee.

"Samuel, there's something that stresses me out and makes me uncomfortable," Sandra said hesitantly.

"What is it? Tell me, I'm listening," Samuel replied curiously.

Sandra took a deep breath and said, "I... I... I'm confused. I don't just see you as an ordinary friend. There's something that confuses me, but I'm afraid-afraid of how my friends will react, afraid of being called weird or incompatible with my social status."

Samuel simply smiled and responded, "I understand, Sandra. I understand your feelings. But don't let other people's words hinder your own feelings. We can't control what others think, but we can control our own thoughts and choices."

Sandra was stunned and realized that Samuel was right. She needed the courage to face the consequences of her feelings and not let her social image control her. Sandra became even more convinced that she had a strong crush on Samuel.

In silence, Sandra contemplated, trying to calm herself amidst the emotional chaos she was experiencing. She realized that if her friends discovered her feelings for Samuel, her life might change. Sandra wanted to remain strong and resilient in the face of the worst possible outcome.

Facing the confusion and questions from her friends, Sandra decided to carefully consider her options. She realized that there was a distinction between pride and hope. Pride encompassed the shame and concern she felt about others perceiving her differently if they were aware of her feelings.

On the other hand, hope revolved around her desire to share those feelings with Samuel and explore the possibilities between them.

Sandra resolved to overcome her pride by bolstering her self-confidence. She understood that if her friends were truly genuine, they would accept and support her regardless of her emotions.

She acknowledged that being true to herself meant summoning the courage to express her feelings and confronting the consequences head-on.

To address the discomfort and confusion experienced by her friends, Sandra devised a plan to speak with them privately. She intended to elucidate her current situation, articulate her emotions, and clarify why she felt the need to process it individually before involving her friends.

Sandra hoped for their understanding and the space to navigate her feelings without judgment or interference.

While executing her plan, Sandra remained committed to being a good friend and providing support to those around her. Although she occasionally missed gatherings with her friends, she made an effort to attend important events and offered reasonable explanations when unable to participate.

Sandra wanted her friends to know that despite grappling with complex emotions, she cherished their friendships.

Chapter 3 Samuel showcases his prowess

Today, there was a friendly football match at school between Morning Sun High School and the neighboring Penaburan High School. Samuel, who actively participated in the extracurricular sports of football, took part and became a key player. Samuel was indeed talented in playing football, and his skills and speed were acknowledged by his sports coach.

In that match, Samuel performed impressively. He was the determining factor in their victory and was named the best player of the match.

After the game ended, Sandra couldn't get over Samuel's amazing and cool performance on the field. She was truly amazed by Samuel's ability to handle the ball.

"Samuel, wow... you're so cool at playing football, I'm a big fan of yours," Sandra teased Samuel with a playful smile.

"Thank you so much, especially for watching from the beginning," Samuel replied casually.

Sandra felt foolish and hesitant to express her feelings to Samuel. However, she couldn't deny that her feelings for Samuel were growing stronger. She became more interested in and infatuated with her friend. She was increasingly impressed by Samuel's humble, kind, determined, and cool nature.

As time went by, Sandra couldn't bear her love for Samuel any longer. Today, Sandra decided to be honest with Samuel about her feelings. She met Samuel at the school cafeteria.

"Samuel, I want to talk about something," Sandra greeted him warmly.

"Just say it directly, like you would to anyone," Samuel replied with a smile.

Sandra felt a pang upon hearing Samuel's response; her heart felt like it was about to break. She became even more flustered and nervous. Unexpectedly, Sandra suddenly ran away, distancing herself from Samuel without saying a word.

Samuel, who witnessed Sandra's behavior, was puzzled and confused. "Wait, Sandra, what's wrong?"

Sandra was truly torn and uncertain. She was afraid her friends would distance themselves and turn against her because she liked a guy like Samuel, who was considered poor, and her friends often bullied him.

Sandra regretted her friends' behavior, who enjoyed bullying Samuel. In her eyes, Samuel was intelligent, smart, accomplished, and charismatic.

The next day, Sandra was determined in her decision. She was ready to face any consequences that might occur if she started dating Samuel.

That day, Sandra made a promise to meet Samuel at the school's backyard garden, the place where she first greeted him.

Upon arriving at the garden, Sandra saw Samuel already waiting there with a sweet smile. Sandra approached Samuel with a pounding heart.

"Samuel, may I talk to you for a moment?" Sandra asked, slightly hesitant.

"Huh... has it been like this since yesterday, huh, Ra?" Samuel replied, confused.

Sandra gave a bitter smile, feeling upset about Samuel's response. She became even more nervous, and it felt like her heart was about to shatter.

"I want to be honest. Throughout our closeness all this time, my feelings for you might have changed. Initially, I only saw you as a friend, but now..." Sandra couldn't continue her sentence, appearing extremely flustered.

"You want to say, 'I like you'? You want to say, 'Will you be my girlfriend'? Is that it?" Samuel interrupted Sandra's sentence with an expressionless face.

Sandra was shocked, feeling more cornered and awkward. She never expected that Samuel already had a feeling that she was going to confess to him.

"I don't know what to say, Sandra. I'm glad to be your friend. But..." Samuel paused.

"But what...??? Ahh... I understand, I get it... it's okay, I don't want to make you uncomfortable. I just wanted to express my feelings all this time."

Sandra tried to hold back her pain by lowering her head.

Samuel smiled at Sandra's bravery in being honest and expressing her feelings. Although Samuel didn't feel the same way, he still wanted to maintain their friendship.

Samuel was also surprised to learn that Sandra had feelings for him. He couldn't help but smile, imagining the most beautiful girl in school having a crush on him.

"I appreciate your feelings and your decision, Sandra. We'll still be friends, right? Cool friends, right?"

Samuel tried to lighten the mood.

Sandra nodded with a smile, trying to show respect for his decision.

"Of course, we're cool and awesome friends!" Sandra smiled, trying to hide her disappointment.

Sandra and Samuel's relationship grew even stronger after Sandra was honest about her feelings for him. They started hanging out more often and spending time together.

A few days passed, and Sandra was in the park when her foot got stuck in a tree branch, causing her to stumble and fall into a small ditch in front of her. She sprained her ankle, and Samuel happened to witness the incident and immediately rushed to help her.

"Sandra, are you okay? Does it hurt?" Samuel asked, worriedly.

Sandra looked in pain and couldn't stand up.

"Ouch, it hurts a lot, and you're asking me if it hurts," Sandra replied irritably.

Samuel panicked upon seeing Sandra's sprained ankle. He quickly carried her and instructed her to sit on a park bench, then he took out his water bottle from his bag.

"Try drinking some water first, Sandra. You need to rest for a while," Samuel suggested, offering his water bottle.

Sandra drank the water given by Samuel. She looked at him and felt lucky to have a friend who cared so much about her well-being.

"Thank you so much, Samuel. You truly are the best guy I've ever known," Sandra said sincerely.

Samuel smiled and then examined Sandra's sprained ankle. He provided basic first aid based on his limited medical knowledge.

"It seems like you can't walk properly yet, Sandra. I should take you home. Can I accompany you?" Samuel looked at Sandra meaningfully.

Sandra just nodded and smiled happily. She felt an extra warmth when Samuel looked at her intently.

Samuel carried Sandra into a taxi, and throughout the journey, they engaged in lively conversations that made Sandra incredibly happy and comfortable.

When they arrived at Sandra's house, Samuel was warmly welcomed by Sandra's parents. Samuel helped Sandra enter her room. Not only that, but he also applied a cold compress to her ankle, fed her during mealtime, and finally gave her pain medication.

"Thank you, my superhero," Sandra responded. "You truly are the most amazing guy I've ever met."

"Don't say that. I just want to make sure you're okay," Samuel replied with his dry humor.

Sandra felt that Samuel was incredibly caring, and she couldn't deny that he had become very special in her eyes.

After a few days of recovery, Sandra's ankle had fully healed. Sandra felt that she needed to repay her debt to Samuel. She planned to give him a gift and show him something as a token of her gratitude.

At School

"Samuel, I want to give you something. I want to give you a gift as a token of my gratitude for taking care of me so well when I was sick, is that okay?" Sandra asked, pleadingly.

"Of course, you can, but actually, you don't need to, Ra," Samuel replied straightforwardly.

Sandra smiled and handed him a neatly folded piece of paper. "Here, read this."

Samuel was surprised when he read the contents of the letter, and then he smiled broadly.

The letter read:

"Samuel, thank you for being my true friend all this time. I like you!"

Samuel insisted on his choice of remaining just friends. He didn't want their friendship to be ruined if they were to start dating and encounter problems.

Sandra felt heartbroken once again after being rejected twice by Samuel. However, she remained determined with her desires and hopes. Sandra tried to get Samuel's attention in her own way.

She invited Samuel to music concerts, movies, hiking trips, and she wanted to accompany him in all his activities.

Sandra also made an effort to learn more about Samuel's background. She wanted to better understand the character of her admired guy.

Despite facing rejection multiple times, Sandra continued to show a positive and sportsmanlike attitude by supporting Samuel's activities both inside and outside of school. She gave him 100% support.
