"Hm?" Aaron's chilly voice could be heard clearly as Irina took in a deep breath.
"Can you come home now?" Irina's grip tightened around the phone immediately she said that. There was silence from the other end for a brief moment.
"Please" Irina spoke again softly
"Okay"
Irina's fingers moved to end the call when she heard a loud shuffling from the other end.
Irina's face contorted into a confused frown. However, the third party at the other end didn't want her to stay in suspense for too long. In the next second, Irina heard a very familiar feminine voice. A voice Irina had grown to detest.
"Aaron, I'm starving, Let's go out to eat"
Irina froze as an icy coldness enveloped her, rendering her warm, beating heart immobile.
"What do you want to eat?" Aaron's voice turned soft, very different from the familiar icy tone he always used with Irina.
This reminded Irina again that his tenderness and love only exist for one woman: Vanessa Eliss, a girl who was Irina's best friend 5 years ago.
"I just want to stay by your side, forever and ever..." Vanessa's hypocritical voice was heard again.
Aaron seemed to have forgotten that his wife, Irina, was still on the phone, listening to their conversation.
Irina hung up the call because she didn't want to hear about how much they loved each other. Now, recalling Vanessa's words was enough to ruin her previously lighthearted mood.
However, this wasn't the first time Vanessa had dropped provocative words or messages just to annoy her.
"Irina, I'm back. You have no place in the Willer family."
"Aaron Willer and I had been together way before you met him. Do you think that you can replace me in these few years? Just Get lost and Never show your face ever again!"
"You don't know how much Aaron loves me, do you? Even when he lies on your bed, all he thinks about is me. You only deserve to be my substitute. Irina, does this feel good?"
"Just sign the f**king papers and get lost, Irina!"
Irina thought that she had gotten over it all but she knew it wasn't going to be that easy.
For 4 years, Irina and Aaron were forced into an arranged marriage by both their parents but what Irina never expected was to fall for him at first sight.
For four years, Irina had tried everything to make him fall for her, or at least acknowledge her as his wife. In return, she was labeled as a shameless woman who did nothing for her husband's happiness. Even Aaron despised her from the moment she married into his family.
Today, 27th June, was their wedding anniversary, which he failed to remember as well.
Before meeting Aaron, Irina had always dreamed of becoming a medical doctor. However, she had abandoned this dream to become a stay-at-home wife to please Aaron's family. She believed that as long as she was with the man she loved, nothing else mattered.
But right now, she felt like a real joke.
****
A loud knock was heard, making Irina, who was asleep, wake up with a frown.
"Mrs willer"
"What is it?" Irina asked with a tired yawn.
"Mr willer is back"
"Alright, I'll be out soon," Irina spoke with a glimmer of hope shining in the depth of her crystal blue eyes.
Irina did not delay in the slightest and immediately freshened up before putting on the set of jewelry that she had worn during her wedding 5 years ago.
"I thought you wouldn't come back today" Irina spoke softly.
"I have something to say" Aaron spoke in a deep voice, his voice magnetic and charming. Even if he just said a few words, Irina was fascinated.
His slender finger pointed at the document at the side, indicating for Irina to take it.
A little closer, the words on the cover suddenly burst into her eyes.
Divorce agreement?
Irina took a deep breath, trying her very best to look unaffected. "And....do you know that today is our wedding anniversary?"
Irina clenched her fist around the hem of her gown. Her hands involuntarily trembled, sweat escaping from her trembling palms.
"Hmm?" Irina pushed, her eyes became misty, and she felt the prickling sensation in her nose that indicated tears were looming.
"That is none of my concern. After all, you know fully well that only one woman deserves to be my wife and that is Nessa." Aaron said coldly and indifferently. "It will come to an end one day. I just found out that maybe today is the best day for us to finalize the divorce."
Irina struggled to regain her composure, her racing heart gradually slowing to a more steady rhythm. As she tried to calm down, she noticed the intense redness in her palm, evidence of how tightly she had pinched it in her distress.
Everyone thought she was merely a tool used by her parents to elevate themselves to the upper class, but only Irina understood what this marriage meant to her.
But now, Aaron suddenly proposed to divorce her.
Irina desperately controlled her emotions so that she would not lose her composure. At this moment, she was right in front of Aaron, but she did not dare to reach out and pick up the document.
Irina managed to calm down and forced a bitter smile. "Tell me, Aaron, That you've never had even if it is a little bit of affection for me"
Aaron bore a disgusted expression. "Irina, I'll have you know that the person I want to marry is Vanessa Eliss Pearson. I never wanted to marry you! Only Vanessa has the right to be my wife. You're not good enough for me," he declared.
"But...."
Resisting the bitterness in her heart, she quietly swallowed what she was about to say.
"Get me a glass of water" After Aaron finished speaking, he reached out and tugged at his collar. His handsome face seemed even redder than usual. Something was wrong.
The maid Aaron had commanded to give him a glass of water seemed to be taking a long time and a few seconds later, Aaron felt a growing thirst.
He raised his arm but couldn't muster much strength. He glanced over at Irina before speaking, his voice carrying a hint of hoarseness. "We will talk later."
Irina tried to help him towards his room, thinking it was just mild tiredness, but Aaron misunderstood her concern and pushed her aside, taking large strides towards his bedroom.
Worried, Irina rushed after him. It was dark inside Aaron's room, and as soon as she entered, the imposing man standing there, with eyes as dark as the night sky, suddenly turned and grabbed her waist.
"Aaron...you!"
Irina got pressed down by him with his other fist wrapped tightly around her neck, almost blocking her air passage. The drugs that Irina knew nothing about probably threw him off a little as Aaron tilted his body to whisper into her ears. "You want it too, don't you?"
Irina wanted to refuse but it was obvious that Aaron wasn't going to give her the chance to recoil. The warmth penetrated her clothes, setting her ablaze. The numbing sensation came in endless waves, rocking through her body. The temperature continued to rise as Aaron seemed to let go entirely, without holding her back as he took her over and over again.
Hours later, Irina laid tiredly beside Aaron who had his arms wrapped around her slender waist. Irina's heart thumped loudly as she stared at his perfect figure proportions.
She wrapped her arms around the back of his neck with an obsessed expression that was also of pure love.
She opened her mouth to speak and as a result of the hours of intense sex, her voice turned hoarse "Aaron, I love you"
Irina opened her mouth to say more when she heard Aaron mutter in a low voice "Nessa...."
Irina thought that she heard wrongly, but hearing the name of the woman she detested the most coming from her husband's lips was a final blow towards Irina's chest.
Irina froze at the door as tears stung her eyes. Irina clenched her fist tightly, her entire body trembling from the pressure.
For four years, Irina had been obedient and careful. She trashed her dreams of becoming a medical doctor and wholeheartedly played the role of Aaron's trophy wife.
Wasn't she faithful and obedient enough?, Just to get his love.
Why was it necessary for him to mercilessly crush the final bit of her self-worth?
At that moment, Irina's clear eyes shone with tears and great determination.
*****
The next morning, Aaron was awakened by the dazzling sunlight outside the floor-to-ceiling window.
Immediately he opened his eyes, he realized something. The absurd activity that occurred last night suddenly flashed through his mind. His eyeballs darkened and anger flashed through his dark eyes.
How dare that vile woman?
As far as he could remember, he warned her to stay away from him but she didn't listen.
She approached him despite the state he was in. Forging concern, she finally got what she had always wanted.
At the thought of this, His face turned blank and there was rage blazing in his dark eyes but unknown to him....
...
Irina knelt on the floor and began to pack her luggage.
She didn't stop, and neither were the thoughts in her mind.
She and Aaron had been married for four years. Alas, Aaron despised her the moment she married into his family.
Back then, his grandfather was on his deathbed and the doctor said that his chance of survival was at 20%. The old man believed that his time had come, so he persuaded Aaron to get married and have a child, hoping to see his grandchildren before he died. As luck would have it, she was selected to be Aaron's wife and not Vanessa who was Aaron's lover.
Her greedy father and mother immediately agreed to the marriage. She could still remember how delighted she was as she waited for the night of her wedding.
Yet Aaron never showed up until the next day; she found out that he had spent the night, which was supposed to be the most special night of her entire life, with another woman.
Yet, when she had asked him, he bore a disgusted expression. "Irina, The person who deserves to wear my diamond ring around her finger is Vanessa Eliss. I never wanted to marry you! Only Vanessa has the right to be my wife," he declared.
Irina knew that Aaron wasn't supposed to love her. However, she still held on to the hope that the man would warm up to her one day.
In the past four years of their marriage, she did her best to be a good and caring wife. She would cook dinner every evening, ensuring that he had freshly prepared meals to come home to. Regardless of the time, she would only go to bed once he returned home. If he drank excessively at social gatherings, she would diligently take care of him instead of leaving him with someone else. Whenever he got ill or hurt, she would be more worried than anyone else.
Every winter, she'd turn on the heater and prepare a hot bath for him. In the mornings, she'd wake up earlier than usual to make sure his clothes were warm so that he wouldn't feel the cold.
Nevertheless, he never loved her, and he never would.
It was then that Irina finally understood that her one-sided feelings would never be reciprocated.
She would never see Aaron Willer fall for her, for his heart belonged to another woman.
Her husband spent a whole day with another woman on their wedding anniversary.
That was just ridiculous...
Both their parents arranged their marriage, and she thought she could win his heart by loving him with all she had.
Now, she realized that she was wrong.
In Aaron's opinion, she was a woman with motives and greed. Compared with Vanessa, she was nothing.
Now, the time had come to let him go.
Irina raised her head, held back her tears, and closed her suitcase forcefully.
"And what are you doing?"
The man's voice was as cold as ever.
Irina raised her head upon hearing the sound.
Even though she had made up her mind to break up with Aaron, her heart still fluttered uncontrollably when she saw him.
She walked up to Aaron, put down her suitcase, took out a stack of documents from her bag, and handed them over.
"This is the divorce agreement you gave me last night. I have already signed it. After you sign it, we will go to the Civil Affairs Bureau to get divorced tomorrow."
Aaron frowned even tighter.
He didn't know whether she was acting or not.
And he didn't believe that a person who was greedy like her would be willing to divorce and give up her current luxurious life.
"Irina, is this a new trick that you've come up with?"
Aaron didn't even look at her, and his tone was impatient. He walked past her and prepared to go upstairs to wash up.
Seeing that he was leaving, Irina felt a dull pain in her heart. He had always been like this, impatient and cold. He wouldn't spend even a minute on her...
Irina said softly while clenching both of her hands, "Aaron, I'll divorce you without any compensation."
Aaron paused and suddenly turned to look at her with disbelief.
The woman in front of him suddenly showed a sweet smile, but her voice was contemptuous and mocking.
"Why? Have you fallen in love with me so much that you're unwilling to let me go?"
Under the light, her eyes shone like sparkling crystal pieces.
"Hah!" Aaron sneered in return. Shoving her aside, he retorted coldly, "You think too highly of yourself, Irina."
Aaron had never seen her with such an attitude, and he noticed something different in her eyes. But before he could tell what it was, he was irritated by her words.
Picking up the pen, Aaron directly turned to the last page, and he saw what she had just said.
He paused, ignoring the unreasonable irritability in his heart, and signed his name.
Then, with a snap, he threw the divorce agreement into Irina's arms with a sarcastic smile.
"Don't regret it"
That's supposed to be her words!
Irina also smiled slightly and said, "Tomorrow at 9 am, I will wait for you at the gate of the Civil Affairs Bureau."
Irina took her suitcase and sat down on the bench by the fountain in the neighborhood.
The diamond ring on her ring finger was shining in the darkness. Irina slowly took it off and threw it into the fountain.
She looked at the duplex that she used to call home for the last time, stood up, and walked towards the gate of the neighborhood.
Irina swiftly called a number, and the call connected immediately. She said, "Please come and pick me up."
Less than twenty minutes later, a silver-gray sports car arrived in the neighborhood, and a tall, handsome, blue-eyed man stepped out of the car with a characteristic smile on his face.
"Rina," he greeted.
Irina managed a faint smile as she walked towards the man, who assisted her with her luggage before stowing it in the car's trunk.
The sports car gracefully drifted past Aaron's imposing mansion, with the man behind the wheel being Damien Ernest.
An acclaimed actor and the favorite son of the wealthy Ernest family, Damien possessed a sophisticated appearance and acting prowess. He was also Irina's best friend.
As Damien drove, he glanced at Irina's delicate expression in the rearview mirror and felt a pang of concern.
Perceiving his worry, Irina smiled at him. "I'm okay."
Damien continued driving, his lips pursed in distress. "Do you need my help?"
"No, I'll come to you if I need help." Irina leaned back in her seat and closed her eyes. "Before I leave, I'm going to the Civil Affairs Bureau with Aaron to file for divorce."
"Where would you like to go? To your aunt's house? I can't leave you alone."
The mention of "house" yanked Irina back from the divorce haze. She gazed out into the night, her eyes gradually turning cold.
"Take me back to my place."
Damien dropped Irina off at the home she had purchased five years ago and departed.
The house was immaculate. Even though she didn't reside there, a maid cleaned it every week. Irina changed the sheets and lay on the bed.
The memories of the past played over and over in her mind like a movie.
She had tried hard to hold back tears, but now they freely streamed down her face.
It seemed she didn't care about divorcing Aaron now. However, she knew herself well. She had been married to Aaron for four years and had loved him. Leaving him was undeniably a cause for sorrow.
Irina wiped away her tears, then used the computer to erase all her information and traces related to the Willer family.
Her eyes reflected pain, and she was resolute in bringing everything to an end. She whispered, "Aaron, from now on, I will never love you again..."
The next morning, Irina woke up at 7 am.
She freshened up, had breakfast, changed clothes, and applied delicate makeup.
Then, she messaged Aaron and scheduled a divorce appointment.
As soon as she stepped out of the house, Damien's car pulled up in front of her.
He escorted her to the Civil Affairs Bureau, and as she stepped out of the car, Irina felt an inexplicable chill.
The cold wind swept through her, and she wrapped her clothes more tightly around her.
"Don't catch a cold."
Damien promptly removed his coat, extended it, and draped it over Irina's shoulders from behind.
Irina rubbed her hands and flashed a smile at him. "I'm lucky to have you around."
At that moment, another luxury car pulled up at the entrance.
Irina and Damien turned their gazes towards it.
A bodyguard opened the door for Aaron, who emerged from the car in a suit. He appeared aloof, with an elegant and noble demeanor that bordered on indifference.
He also noticed the man beside Irina, and his eyes narrowed slightly.
He had thought Irina wouldn't go through with the divorce and that she had made a scene the previous day. However, he hadn't expected her to show up, let alone with a... Lover.
Damien's eyes narrowed, and his expression turned icy. He seemed ready to confront Aaron, but Irina stopped him.
"There are too many people around. Go back to the car. I'll come out after the divorce is finalized."
Damien was a public figure. If he were recognized, it could cause trouble.
Damien ceased glaring at Aaron and smiled at Irina. "Alright, I'll wait for you."
He then returned to the car.
Aaron observed them with indifference, a hint of displeasure crossing his eyes as he watched Damien step into an expensive, limited-edition sports car.
She had arrived with her lover without finalizing the divorce.
If anyone else saw this, they might think he had been cuckolded, thus damaging the company's image.
"Irina, we're not divorced yet. Mind your behavior. I don't want to be at the center of rumors."
Having spoken, he entered the Civil Affairs Bureau.
Irina sensed that he was mocking her. Her heart ached suddenly, but she said nothing and followed him inside to proceed with the divorce.
In the office, Irina quickly reviewed the agreement and signed it without hesitation.
Then, she looked at Aaron.
"I've signed the papers. You don't need to provide me with any compensation once we've settled everything."
His intense gaze met hers for a few seconds before a scornful smile spread across his captivating face. "Don't regret it."
"You don't need to worry. I won't," Irina replied, devoid of emotion.
Aaron signed, and the two started the divorce procedure right away.
Today, divorce is a very uncommon event and usually concludes swiftly. When Irina received the divorce document, she was in a trance. Finally, after all these years of admiration, it ended. She heard Aaron say abruptly, "Since we're divorced, we don't need to see each other again."
Irina smiled mockingly as she nodded. "No need to worry. I promise never to visit you or your family members again."
She liked no one in the Willer family, and no one liked her, except for elderly Mr. Willer, who was the only one who truly cared for her. Without offering Aaron an opportunity to speak further, she turned around and left the Civil Affairs Bureau.
Aaron scowled. It surprised him that she agreed so fast-so fast that she didn't even spare him a second glance. Irina had both flattered and seduced him too much during the last four years.
He was a bit surprised that she was acting so strangely now and not at all clingy. He walked out after her.
Irina entered Damien's vehicle. "Let's go." She spoke, breathing a sigh of relief.
"Okay."
Aaron immediately came out after Irina, and Damien glanced at him with mocking in his eyes. The sports vehicle swung around and drove by Aaron with the dominance of the wind in the next second. Ray Dunce, Aaron's driver, was completely shocked by what was going on. Ray carefully took in Aaron's expressionless face, remaining silent but thinking deep inside.
"The woman who just left... was she Miss Irina or just an imposter "
This was the first time Irina had ever walked away from Aaron without stopping even for a moment to take a second peak at him. Ray even felt a domineering aura emanating from Irina, who everyone knew to be a fragile little housewife who could be snapped into two just by the flick of a finger.
Meanwhile, On the other side
"What were you doing?"
Damien snorted coldly. "I loathe him. You're such an excellent woman. Many people love you, but he abandoned you like this. He's so stupid. Besides, I don't like him at all; he's so indifferent. I don't know why you liked him at first."
Irina pursed her lips and smiled but didn't say much. It could only be said that Aaron was not like this four years ago, which was why she had loved him for so long...
At this time, the radio suddenly broadcasted a piece of news. "Vanessa Eliss, the female musician of the new generation, was injured and hugged the president of the Willer Group in the ward. They seemed to have gotten back together again."
Hearing the breaking news, Damien's expression instantly turned cold. He quickly took out his phone and saw that Vanessa's relationship with Aaron had become the hottest trend!
The whole internet was shocked, and the report also included a photo of Vanessa hugging Aaron in her hospital. Damien quickly became upset, without realizing that it was old news, leading him to angrily curse Aaron.
"This scumbag! He just got divorced for less than half an hour, and he's already hooking up with another woman!"
"Rina, you must never get back with him!"
Irina nestled in the seat. Hearing this, her heart suddenly trembled. She didn't expect Aaron to be in such a hurry. But it didn't matter anymore. She and Aaron had already divorced. From now on, he could be with whomever he liked, and it had nothing to do with her anymore.
