Introduction

Sarah Miles, a passionate journalist, was just days away from her dream: a prestigious UN Human Rights Correspondent Fellowship in war-torn Lendu and a wedding to her devoted fiancé, Ethan.

Her life, meticulously built, felt like it was finally ascending.

Then, a sudden, insidious message shattered everything.

Anonymous photos and videos flooded her phone, revealing Ethan, naked, with Chloe Hayes – Sarah' s own half-sister.

The man who had relentlessly pursued and championed her ambitions was a brutal liar, caught in a sickening affair.

His desperate excuses and attempts to manipulate the situation only deepened the agonizing wound.

Adding insult to unspeakable injury, Chloe' s chillingly cruel taunts made it clear this wasn't mere infidelity; it was a calculated act of destruction.

How could the man she loved betray her with her own family?

Why would Chloe, whom she was just beginning to connect with, orchestrate such pain?

The sheer audacity and inexplicable malice left Sarah reeling, grappling with a profound sense of injustice and a world turned utterly upside down.

With her meticulously planned future in ashes and her heart irrevocably broken, Sarah made a defiant choice.

The fellowship in Lendu transformed from a career ambition into a desperate, immediate escape.

She systematically dismantled her entire life, prepared to plunge into the chaos of a war zone, determined to find a future free from her shattered past, even if it meant confronting unthinkable dangers alone.

Chapter 1

The email glowed on Sarah Miles' s laptop screen.

"Congratulations, Ms. Miles. The selection committee is pleased to offer you the UN Human Rights Correspondent Fellowship in Lendu."

Her breath caught. Lendu. Six months.

This was it, her ticket out of fluff pieces at the Austin Chronicle, her first real step towards covering human rights on a global stage.

A wave of pure excitement washed over her, so strong she almost missed her phone buzzing.

Ethan Vance. Her fiancé.

"Hey," his voice was warm, familiar. "Big news?"

"The biggest," she said, grinning. "I got the fellowship, Ethan. Lendu."

A pause. Just a beat too long.

"Wow, Sarah. That's... fast. And far."

"It's what I've always wanted," she reminded him, a small knot forming in her stomach.

"I know, I know. We'll make it work," he said, his usual confidence returning. "We always do."

Their wedding was ten days away, a rustic-chic affair at a Hill Country vineyard. Everything was planned, deposits paid.

This fellowship was a complication, a big one. But Ethan had always championed her ambitions. He said he loved her fierce independence, the fire that drove her. He' d even stood up to his wealthy Dallas oil family, who thought she wasn't "connected" enough.

Later that evening, curled on the sofa of their modern downtown Austin condo, the excitement had a nervous edge.

Ethan was scrolling through his phone, a small, almost imperceptible frown on his face.

"Everything okay?" Sarah asked.

"Yeah, just... work stuff," he said, not looking up.

Her own phone vibrated on the coffee table. A new message on Signal, from an unknown number.

Curiosity killed the cat, she thought, but opened it anyway.

A photo.

Her blood ran cold.

It was Ethan. Naked. Not with her.

With Chloe Hayes. Her half-sister.

Chloe, the sweet, slightly naive 22-year-old UT student she' d cautiously started to build a relationship with.

Her hand trembled as she scrolled. More photos. Short video clips, intimate. Screenshots of texts, filled with passionate, secretive words.

Ongoing affair. The words burned into her mind.

The sender was anonymous, but Sarah knew. Only Chloe would have these. Only Chloe would be this cruel.

She looked at Ethan, still engrossed in his phone, the picture of progressive idealism, the man who had pursued her relentlessly.

"Ethan," her voice was a strangled whisper.

He finally looked up, a flicker of annoyance in his eyes. "What's wrong? You look like you've seen a ghost."

She held out her phone, the screen illuminating his betrayal.

His face went pale.

"Sarah, I can explain."

The classic line.

"Explain this?" she asked, her voice rising. "Explain sleeping with my sister?"

He started with denial. "That's not real. It's fake. Someone is trying to mess with us."

Then he minimized. "Okay, maybe something happened once. It was a mistake. Stress, wedding jitters."

Finally, he broke down, tears welling. "It was Chloe. She' s infatuated. She... she came onto me. I' m so sorry, Sarah. It meant nothing."

The excuses felt like slaps to her face.

She remembered him at a party last year, pulling her close, kissing her in front of everyone. "This is the woman I'm going to marry," he'd announced, his voice full of pride. "The most incredible journalist, the most amazing woman."

He had spoiled her, grand gestures, declarations of love. All of it, a lie.

Her engagement ring felt heavy, cold on her finger.

How could she have been so blind?

The phone in Ethan' s hand suddenly rang, loud in the tense silence.

He glanced at the screen, a new wave of panic crossing his face.

Chloe.

He didn't answer it.

But the interruption confirmed everything. His divided attention, his lies.

Sarah felt a coldness spread through her, a chilling disconnect from the man she thought she knew, the life she thought they were building.

Chapter 2

"It was Chloe," Ethan repeated, his voice hoarse. "She sent those."

Sarah stared at him, the image of Chloe' s sweet face contorting in her mind into something malicious.

Chloe, who Sarah had met for coffee just last week. Chloe, who had gushed about Sarah' s wedding dress.

"You' re going to be such a beautiful bride, Sarah. Ethan' s so lucky."

The memory made her stomach churn.

Ethan reached for her, but she flinched away.

"Don't touch me."

He looked stricken. "Sarah, please. We can fix this. I love you."

"Love?" The word tasted like ash.

He started pacing, running his hands through his hair. "I have to go. I need to... I need to talk to her. Sort this out."

His casual demeanor, his immediate thought to go to her, was another stab.

"Go," Sarah said, her voice flat. "Get out."

He hesitated, then grabbed his keys and left, the door closing softly behind him.

Leaving her alone with the wreckage.

She picked up her phone again, forcing herself to look at the evidence.

The videos were short, blurry, but undeniable. Ethan' s hands on Chloe' s skin. Chloe' s laughter.

The messages. "He' ll never know." "You' re so much better than her." "I can' t wait to be with you again."

Each word was a fresh betrayal.

She remembered a gallery opening a few months back. Ethan had been charming, working the room. Chloe had been there, "coincidentally."

Sarah had seen them talking, laughing a little too closely in a corner. Ethan had dismissed it. "She's just a kid, Sarah. A fan of my startup."

His friends had clapped him on the back that night. "You landed a good one, Vance!"

The hypocrisy of it all was suffocating.

Sarah walked to the window, looking down at the Austin city lights. Her life, so carefully constructed, felt like it was shattering.

She had to get away. From him. From Chloe. From this city full of lies.

The Lendu fellowship. It was no longer just an ambition. It was an escape route.

Her phone buzzed. Ethan.

"Sarah, baby, please pick up. We need to talk. This is a huge misunderstanding."

She ignored it.

Another message. "Chloe is just confused. She' s young. Don' t let her ruin us."

Sarah took a deep breath. She needed to be smart.

She typed a reply. "I need some time to think, Ethan. Don't contact me tonight."

His reply was instant. "Okay. Okay, baby. I understand. I love you so much. We' ll get through this."

His blindness was astonishing. Or perhaps, his arrogance.

He thought he could still control this. Control her.
