Chapter 1 The Husband Who Fell from the Sky

"You're already married! Why are you here to register again?"

"Don't you know bigamy is a crime?"

...

Amelia walked out of the Civil Affairs Bureau in shock, holding the freshly printed marriage certificate in her hand.

The man who had accompanied her to register looked at the stunning girl in front of him and sighed regretfully, "Miss Jones, you're already married. Why did you still pay me to fake a marriage?"

Then, leaving behind only the words, "No refunds on the deposit," he hurried away.

Amelia pursed her lips, still struggling to process the situation.

She had never even been in a relationship-how could she possibly already be married?!

Lowering her head, she looked once more at the printed document in her hands.

In the ID photo, the girl looked slightly stiff, her smile forced, a tear-shaped mole at the corner of her eye-undeniably herself. As for the man...

He had striking features, a high-bridged nose, and thin lips curved into a barely perceptible smile. His deep-set eyes stared into the camera, sharp enough to pierce through the paper.

Even in the black-and-white print, his aura of mystery and power was unmistakable.

She scanned the name, Liam.

...She was certain she had never met this man before!

What the hell was going on?!

Amelia pulled out her phone, snapped a picture of the document, and sent it to a black-profile contact on WeChat, [Find out who he is for me.]

The reply was instant, [Got it.]

Suppressing her confusion, Amelia got onto an old electric scooter and slowly rode into a luxurious villa district-the Jones family estate.

Today was her sister Charlotte's big day. Her fiancé was coming over with the betrothal gifts.

The house was decorated festively, servants busied themselves in an orderly manner, and even a few temporary workers had been hired.

Amelia parked her scooter in a corner, just as whispers from the temporary workers and maids drifted to her ears,

"Who is she? She's so pretty!"

"Shh, she's the illegitimate daughter the master refuses to acknowledge."

"Her mother was a mistress. Years ago, when the madam was about to give birth, that woman barged in with her own pregnant belly demanding justice. Both women ended up giving birth on the same day. That old woman has some nerve-she's been clinging to this house for years, refusing to leave."

"But Miss Amelia at least knows her place. She moved out in middle school and hasn't come back for years. Wonder what she's doing here today..."

Amelia lowered her eyes, pretending not to hear, and stepped into the house.

Her mother, Mary, was waiting by the door. The elegant woman pulled her anxiously upstairs the moment she saw her. "Come with me to see your sister. Oh, and did you get the marriage certificate?"

Amelia's voice was calm, betraying no emotion. "I got it."

Even though the groom had changed, it still counted, right?

"Good. Remember your place. Edward is your sister's fiancé. A top-tier family like his is completely out of your reach! Only Charlotte is worthy of him!"

At these words, a trace of mockery flashed through Amelia's eyes.

Edward was the eldest grandson of the Stuart family, the most prestigious household in New York City. He had pursued her for four years in college, only to propose to Charlotte on their graduation day...

When Mary found out, she had immediately demanded that Amelia get married-severing any possibility between her and Edward.

It had always been this way...

Whenever there was even the slightest conflict of interest between her and Charlotte, Mary would force her to step aside.

Because she was the illegitimate child, and her very existence was a sin.

As a child, she had been brainwashed into believing that enduring all this was simply her fate.

But now, she had woken up.

Amelia's expression was indifferent as she spoke each word with clarity, "We agreed-this is the last time."

Mary was the one who had sinned. She was the one who clung to the Jones family just to see her father every day. She was the one desperate to please Charlotte. Amelia would not sacrifice her life to pay for her mother's mistakes.

This was merely her way of repaying the debt of being born. After this, they were done.

Mary waved impatiently. "I know."

They soon arrived at Charlotte's room.

The dazzling girl was dressed like a princess in an extravagant gown, choosing accessories from an array of shimmering jewelry.

Amelia stood tall despite her plain attire.

Charlotte greeted her with a smile. "Amelia, what brings you here?"

Before she could answer, Mary jumped in. "Charlotte, Amelia got married today."

Charlotte looked surprised. "Already? Who's the guy? Better than Edward?"

Mary scoffed. "Impossible! There's no one in all of New York City with a higher status than Mr. Stuart! Charlotte, the man she found is probably just some nobody. She didn't even dare bring him here, afraid his cheap looks would disgrace you!"

Charlotte's voice carried a hint of jealousy. "How could that be? Amelia is so beautiful-otherwise, Edward wouldn't have chased her for four years."

"Beauty is useless! Trash attracts trash. A woman like her can only marry some lowlife she met God-knows-where. Mr. Stuart was just playing with her, while only you, Charlotte, are truly worthy of him..."

Amelia frowned.

The man in that photo-his looks and aura were nothing like a lowlife.

But she couldn't be bothered to argue.

At that moment, Charlotte finished choosing her jewelry. She wanted to put on her heels, but her tight gown made it difficult to bend down.

Charlotte smiled sweetly at Amelia.

Mary immediately shoved Amelia forward. "Useless girl, can't you see what's going on? Your sister can't bend down-hurry up and put her shoes on for her!"

Amelia, "..."

Again?

Did Mary still think she was the same clueless, obedient little girl from the past?

Her gaze turned cold, and her voice carried a hint of impatience. "You can do it yourself."

"Amelia! What kind of attitude is that? You think getting married makes you untouchable now? Your husband is nothing but a leech-you'll still have to rely on the Jones family in the future!"

Mary's voice sharpened. "If you don't maintain a good relationship with your sister, one day you and your husband will be begging at her feet! The Jones family raised you-you should serve this family like a slave!"

Just then, a tall figure appeared at the doorway. It was her father, Donald.

The man frowned. "We have an important guest arriving soon-what's all this commotion?"

Charlotte stayed quiet, feigning innocence.

Mary, on the other hand, whined, "It's this ungrateful girl-she got married today and already disrespects me..."

Donald turned his gaze to Amelia, frowning. "Married? Why didn't you let the family introduce someone? Let me see the marriage certificate."

Amelia hesitated for a moment, then pulled out the printed document from her bag.

In a flash, Mary snatched it away. "Let's see what kind of loser you married!"

Meanwhile, Charlotte asked curiously, "Dad, who's coming that's making you so nervous?"

Thinking of the guest, Donald's face filled with excitement, as if he had just received an incredible honor. He proudly announced a name,

"Liam."

Amelia froze instantly.

...Who?

Chapter 2 My Fake Husband!

Charlotte was bewildered. "Who's Liam? Is he impressive?"

Amelia also listened with curiosity.

She had some connections in New York City but had never heard of the name Liam before.

Donald explained, "It's normal that you don't know him. He's very mysterious-even I've never met him. He's Edward's uncle, only 28 years old, and already the true leader of The Stuart family!"

Mary gasped instinctively. "Then wouldn't he be a better match for Charlotte than Edward?"

A family head was far more prestigious than just the eldest grandson!

Donald scolded her, annoyed. "What nonsense are you spouting? Mr. Stuart is already married!"

Amelia narrowed her eyes.

Married...

If he was the same Liam on that marriage certificate, then he should know what was going on.

Mary sounded disappointed. "Who's his wife? She must be even luckier than Charlotte."

Amelia immediately turned her gaze to Donald, but he simply said, "No one knows. Apparently, both he and his wife dislike social events."

Donald frowned in thought. "I don't know why he suddenly decided to come today..."

The Stuart family was the most powerful in New York City, and their leader held an elite status.

The Jones family was only of mid-to-upper-class standing. Charlotte marrying Edward was already considered reaching above her status. Having the head of the Stuart family attend their wedding would be an honor-why would he personally visit for a mere betrothal ceremony?

Mary, however, declared, "It must be because Charlotte is outstanding enough to catch The Stuart family's attention! Charlotte, this diamond necklace won't be enough for the occasion. Since such an important figure is coming, you should wear something more extravagant!"

She stuffed the unread document back into Amelia's hands and eagerly pulled Charlotte away to pick a better piece of jewelry.

She looked even more excited than Charlotte's actual mother, Mrs. Jones.

Amelia smirked mockingly.

"Sir, The Stuart family is arriving soon," the butler informed.

Donald turned and went downstairs. As he passed Amelia, he casually said, "You haven't been home in a long time. Stay for a drink before you leave."

Amelia nodded in agreement.

She wanted to see who Liam really was.

Upstairs, Mary carefully selected jewelry for Charlotte and personally helped her put it on.

As she admired the beautiful girl in front of her, Mary couldn't hide the joy and satisfaction in her eyes.

More than twenty years ago, if not for Mrs. Jones-Alice-she would have married Donald herself!

She despised Alice, so she deliberately caused a scene and gave birth on the same day as her, switching their babies at the hospital.

Now, her daughter was finally going to have a grand wedding, and Alice would even provide a hefty dowry!

Meanwhile, Amelia, as an illegitimate child, would be penniless and forced to marry a lowlife!

Fate had finally turned in her favor-this was what Mrs. Jones deserved!

Downstairs.

Amelia leaned lazily against a shadowed corner of the staircase, eyes fixed on the entrance, waiting for The Stuart family to arrive.

Before long, Mrs. Jones descended the stairs with the help of a maid. She wore a purple cheongsam, her figure slightly frail, exuding an air of scholarly elegance and cool detachment.

"Madam, your health is poor. You should stay upstairs," the maid whispered.

Mrs. Jones shook her head. "No... cough cough... This is such an important day for Charlotte... cough cough... I can't miss it..."

Neither of them noticed Amelia as they walked toward the entrance.

Amelia watched Mrs. Jones' back, her eyes filled with complex emotions.

It was ironic-Mrs. Jones had the most reason to hate her, yet she was the only source of warmth Amelia had ever known in The Jones family.

Mary had never acted like a mother. When Amelia was little, she often forgot to feed her.

As a result, Amelia grew up frail and thin. As soon as she learned to walk, she had to rummage through garbage bins for food.

One day, Mrs. Jones caught her doing this. From then on, she secretly placed food in the garden for Amelia every day.

She did this for twelve years.

Without Mrs. Jones' kindness, Amelia would have starved to death long ago.

Hearing Mrs. Jones' weak coughs as she walked away, Amelia frowned with concern.

Just then, the sound of approaching footsteps signaled The Stuart family's arrival!

Donald and Mrs. Jones greeted them at the entrance. After some polite exchanges, they stepped aside, allowing a large entourage to enter the house.

Amelia's gaze instantly locked onto Liam.

Dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit, he walked at the forefront, surrounded by others like a king among his subjects. His features were even more striking than in the photos-sharp, with a chiseled jawline and piercing eyes that seemed bottomless.

His thin lips exuded a cold indifference, and every movement carried an air of natural authority.

Sensing her gaze, Liam suddenly looked in her direction.

For a moment, their eyes met.

His gaze was sharp, making Amelia's heart skip a beat. She tried to read the emotions in his eyes, but before she could, he looked away.

She was left puzzled.

Did he recognize her, or not?

Donald smiled and flattered him, "Mr. Stuart, is your wife not joining us?"

The moment he asked, Amelia noticed that Liam's gaze flickered toward her again before he replied coolly, "She's unavailable."

The group continued chatting as they moved toward the lounge.

Trailing behind the elders was Edward, the man who had pursued Amelia for four years in college.

Dressed in a formal suit, he looked more mature than before. He hadn't noticed Amelia and was absentmindedly whispering to Charlotte.

Liam took the main seat, and the discussion about the marriage began.

Only then did Amelia step out from the shadows.

She stood there silently, observing the lively scene.

Suddenly, someone grabbed her arm.

Mary hissed in a low voice, "Amelia, why are you still here? Are you still clinging to Edward? Let me remind you-he's your brother-in-law now!"

Amelia shook off her grip and sneered. "Relax. I have no interest in being a mistress. Mr. Jones told me to stay for a drink."

She had never called Donald "Father"-only "Mr. Jones."

Mary gritted her teeth. "That was just a courtesy! Do you really think you're welcome? You don't even know your place! Even I'm not allowed to sit with The Jones family today, and you-an illegitimate child-think you deserve a spot? Get out!"

...This woman was insufferable.

Annoyed, Amelia frowned. Just as she was about to retort, she caught a glimpse of Liam standing up.

He gestured to his phone before striding toward the balcony, presumably to take a call.

Amelia's eyes lit up.

"Fine, I'll leave," she said casually, brushing off Mary as she exited the room.

But instead of leaving the house, she changed direction-heading toward the balcony.

The first-floor balcony led to a small garden outside.

As she approached, she saw Liam ending his call with a grim expression. His sharp gaze immediately locked onto her.

Amelia hesitated for a second.

Then, with a teasing smile, she tried calling out-

"Hubby?"

Chapter 3 I'm Married

A glass door separated the lively reception hall.

Amelia stared intently at Liam, observing his reaction.

However, upon hearing this address, the man's cold aura intensified. His pitch-black eyes revealed a chilling indifference, without a trace of emotion. He turned to return to the reception hall.

Amelia quickly stepped forward, blocking his way.

Liam frowned slightly. "Move."

His deep, pleasant voice carried a noble tone, making one want to hear him speak a few more words.

Amelia sensed something amiss. "You... don't recognize me?"

Liam looked down at her. "Should I?"

Since entering The Jones family estate, he had felt an unusual gaze following him.

That gaze was frank, unlike the sycophantic stares of others, which he found disgusting.

Liam had taken a few more glances at her.

The girl was very beautiful, with fair skin. Her peach blossom eyes and the tear mole at the corner of her eye were alluring yet not overly seductive. Though she stood obediently in the corner, there was an unrestrained aura about her.

When he caught her staring at him, she didn't shy away but boldly met his gaze.

He had thought she was different from those women who threw themselves at him upon seeing him. Unexpectedly, she was bolder-she called him "husband" right away...

Liam's expression grew impatient. He emphasized coldly, "Miss, I am married. Please behave yourself."

Amelia was stunned.

This man clearly didn't recognize her, yet he claimed to be married... Could there have been a mistake at the marriage registry?

She asked, "May I ask who your wife is?"

"None of your concern."

Another four icy words.

Amelia took out a photocopy of a marriage certificate and held it up to him. "Mr. Stuart, the groom's name here should be yours, right?"

Liam glanced at the document. His eyes landed on the bride's name, Amelia.

Lifting his gaze, he sneered. "Miss Jones, a real certificate isn't expensive. If you're going to forge one, at least make it more convincing."

With that, Liam didn't return to the reception hall but strode toward the parking lot.

Amelia chased after him, wanting to explain, but two bodyguards in black stopped her.

She stood still and called after him, "Mr. Stuart, this document is real. If you don't believe me, check with the marriage registry..."

Liam didn't stop. He got into his car and drove away.

His personal assistant remained behind. As he returned to the reception hall, he ran into Charlotte.

Charlotte had seen Amelia pestering Liam but hadn't heard their conversation. Seeing Liam leave and Amelia riding her electric scooter after him, she immediately asked, "Why did Mr. Stuart leave? Did someone offend him?"

The assistant smiled. "President Stuart had urgent matters to attend to and left first. Please inform the elders of the house."

Since his boss hadn't instructed any punishment for the girl, it meant he wasn't concerned.

Charlotte quickly nodded and politely saw the assistant off.

After finalizing the wedding date, the other members of The Stuart family left after lunch.

Once the guests were gone, Donald frowned anxiously. "Why did Mr. Stuart leave so suddenly? Did we fail to treat him properly?"

Charlotte recalled Edward's distracted behavior, how he seemed to be searching for someone. Then she thought of Amelia's devastating beauty and clenched her fists.

Her eyes flickered. "Dad, I saw Amelia bothering Mr. Stuart. He was very angry and left. He even left a message..."

"What message?"

"Mr. Stuart said you should discipline your daughter properly." Charlotte bit her lip. "If Amelia behaves like this, won't The Stuart family think we lack proper upbringing?"

Donald's face instantly darkened.

Amelia rode her scooter out of the villa district but soon lost track of him.

Just as she was feeling frustrated, her phone rang.

She answered and heard a male voice-her subordinate, Jack. "Boss, a lot of people have been investigating Doctor Amy lately."

Amelia raised an eyebrow. "Has my identity been exposed?"

"Of course not! No one would suspect that the person who solved the hydrogen fuel problem-Doctor Amy-is actually a fresh university graduate who looks so harmless..."

"Get to the point," Amelia interrupted his rambling.

"Oh, right! I found information on Liam!"

"Go on."

"Liam is the second son of The Stuart family patriarch. Rumor has it that he's ruthless and cold-blooded, so he was sent abroad from a young age. Everyone assumed The Stuart family business would go to the eldest son-Edward's father. But unexpectedly, Liam returned last week and, through unknown but aggressive means, forced the old man to step down and took over Stuart Group."

Jack asked curiously, "Didn't you say you found someone easy to control for a fake marriage? How did your groom suddenly turn into this cold-blooded tyrant? Boss, if your marriage isn't stable, it could affect the company's IPO..."

Amelia frowned. "Find his contact details and schedule. I need to see him."

She had agreed to Mary's absurd demand for an immediate marriage because being legally married was beneficial for her company's IPO application.

But now, she had somehow ended up married, and she wasn't sure what kind of scheme was behind it.

Liam was no ordinary man. The best approach was to get divorced as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary complications.

Hanging up, Amelia massaged her temples.

This was getting complicated. With Liam's status, he was always surrounded by bodyguards, making him hard to approach.

She really shouldn't have impulsively called him "husband" earlier and made him storm off...

Sighing, she started up her little scooter and slowly rode home.

Leaving the bustling city center, she entered an old urban village on the outskirts.

When she had left The Jones family at thirteen, she hadn't had much money, so she could only rent a place here. Over time, she had gotten used to it and never moved.

Just as she was about to reach home, an elderly woman-probably in her eighties or nineties-suddenly dashed out from the roadside!

Amelia quickly hit the brakes, nearly running her over.

She looked at the old lady, initially suspecting a scam, but soon noticed something was off.

The woman, though frail and small, was dressed decently-not someone from a poor household. Around her neck hung a tag with a contact number and a note, If this elderly woman is lost, please call the number. Generous reward offered.

...As expected, Alzheimer's.

Who knew which family had lost their elderly relative?

Amelia immediately pulled out her phone to dial the number.

Suddenly, the previously dazed woman had a reaction. She grabbed Amelia's wrist and, with newfound clarity in her murky eyes, exclaimed, "Granddaughter-in-law! You're my granddaughter-in-law!"

"..." Amelia's mouth twitched.

Single for 22 years, and now she had another husband?

Was the marriage bureau having a clearance sale today?

Amused, she asked casually, "Grandma, who is your grandson?"

The old lady frowned in thought.

What was her grandson's name again...? Oh, right-Liam!
