"I must gather some evidence of Lenny's infidelity today!"
Scarlet Brown clenched and unclenched her hands to relieve some of her anxiety. She fixed her peaked cap, lowered her head to avoid the surveillance cameras, and walked into a fancy club.
Today, she was here to catch her husband cheating on her.
She hadn't seen Lenny Foster since they got married.
In truth, their marriage was meaningless. They didn't love each other, and it was a waste of their time to be together.
Recently, one of Scarlet's good friends abroad told her that she often saw Lenny hanging out with a woman, and he was intimate with her.
After getting that piece of information, Scarlet set out to collect some proof of Lenny's unfaithfulness so that when she divorced him, she would have the upper hand.
From a distance, Scarlet saw a woman take Lenny into a presidential suite. The door was left ajar. Scarlet carefully approached and listened in through the crack. She heard the woman talking to someone on the phone.
"I know. I won't fail this time. I'll install a camera later to record us having sex and then threaten him with the tape..."
Hearing this, Scarlet frowned.
What was going on? Was that woman trying to set up Lenny?
Although Scarlet didn't have any feelings for her husband, she also couldn't stand around and do nothing while someone tried to trick him and then blackmail him.
She gritted her teeth and stamped her foot. She rushed into the room and then locked the door behind her.
"Who's there?" the woman called out when she heard the noise.
Scarlet didn't waste time talking to her. She just strode forward and knocked the woman out. Then, Scarlet tied her up and dragged her into the bathroom.
Fortunately, she was strong enough to knock out the woman instantly.
After making sure that the woman was completely unconscious, Scarlet walked toward the bed and stared at the man lying on it. She supposed that today wasn't the day that she would get proof of his infidelity.
She grabbed a quilt and covered Lenny with it. Then, she turned off the light on the bedside table and was about to leave. But unexpectedly, someone grabbed her by the wrist.
"Ouch. What the..."
The next second, she was being tossed in the air, and then she found herself on her back on the bed. Lenny climbed on top of her.
In the darkness, Lenny could only tell that the woman he was about to sleep with was very petite. For some reason, he felt a sense of familiarity with her, as if he had met her before.
However, his brain didn't give him any time to think and analyze because at the moment, it was consumed with burning desire and lust.
His libido was in overdrive so great that he felt like he was being devoured by its scorching heat. His reason was on the verge of collapse.
She was too petite to bear his passion.
Scarlet tried her best to resist Lenny. She put her hands on his chest to push him away, and she couldn't believe how hot his skin was.
He was burning up.
She was about to ask him what was wrong with him, but he crashed his lips onto hers. His deep, passionate kiss that tasted faintly of mint immediately sent her mind into shambles and trapped her questions in her throat.
Next thing she knew, he was tearing off her clothes.
Three months later, Lenny returned to the capital city of his home country.
"Any news?" he asked his assistant.
"None yet, but we've sent more people to look for her."
"Find her at all costs."
"Yes, sir," his assistant replied. After hesitating for a moment, he asked, "Sir... Are you really going to divorce your wife?"
"There's someone more suitable to be my wife." Lenny's tone was flat and firm but authoritative and cold.
He didn't know why that girl was in the suite that night, but she did save him out of kindness. And she gave up her body to him.
Her cries and pleas for mercy were all he could remember from that night. Her voice was heartbreaking.
Lenny had no feelings for his wife. He married her because his grandmother forced him to. He obeyed to make his mother feel better. He didn't want his mother to be torn between him and his grandmother.
Divorce would be a relief for both himself and his wife.
At the same time, in Lenny's villa, Scarlet had already received the news of Lenny's return today. He would arrive home in the evening. All the servants were busy preparing for his homecoming party.
But she wasn't happy at all.
Soon, she heard the roar of a car's engine in the distance, and her heart skipped a beat for reasons she couldn't fathom.
Lenny was home.
All the servants went out to welcome Lenny home, but Scarlet remained upstairs and watched his arrival quietly from her bedroom window.
She had to admit that Lenny was devastatingly dashing and sexy.
He was tall with long legs, and his body was well-proportioned. He had no extra fat in his body, and his muscles were lean and strong.
She knew that much about him physically. Because she was able to experience him fully that fateful night.
What happened between them that night was so ridiculously surreal that Scarlet still thought it was just a dream. She didn't know how to tell him when she came back home the morning after.
Lenny's face was impeccable, as if God had taken extra time to carefully craft his face. He looked so handsome with well-defined features.
God was so unfair. He not only gave Lenny a perfect build and a handsome face, but He also gave him a high IQ and a great educational background.
Lenny got his degrees in law and finance in his teens. After graduation, he took over the family business. The company's business had been booming during the past few years, and eventually, it became the number one commercial giant in the capital city. A few years ago, the company ventured into the overseas market and was able to develop well abroad.
After they got married, Lenny went abroad the next day. His excuse for leaving was that the company was starting a new branch and that he needed to focus on it. But since then, he hadn't been home.
Scarlet was lost in various fancies and conjectures when she suddenly felt Lenny's cold eyes on her. Startled, she quickly shut the curtains and stepped away from the window.
She didn't know what brought on such a reflexive reaction. She supposed it was because she felt a sense of inferiority around Lenny.
Scarlet wasn't favored by her own family, which was headed by her stepmother. If she hadn't married Lenny, she would've been at home right now and playing the role of her stepmother's personal maid.
Thanks to Scarlet's mother who had saved Lenny's grandmother, Scarlet managed to marry Lenny.
She knew that even though Lenny didn't like her, he didn't hate her. After all, she knew her place and always behaved herself.
Soon, a servant knocked on her door.
"Mr. Foster is home, Mrs. Foster. He wants you to join him for a meal downstairs."
Scarlet hurried downstairs. In the dining room, the table was already set, and the dishes had been served.
Lenny sat at one end of the long dining table. Scarlet proceeded to sit at the other end where a place had been set up for her.
They liked different foods. Since it was his homecoming, all the dishes served were according to his preference.
Looking at the medium rare steak on her plate, Scarlet couldn't help wrinkling her nose.
"What's wrong?" Lenny asked, looking up at her and frowning slightly.
"My steak still has blood in it," she replied. She wasn't used to steak that was not well done, and her appetite hadn't been good recently, perhaps because of the hot weather.
"Get her a well-done steak, please."
"Thank you." Scarlet thanked him in a low voice.
During the meal, neither of them spoke. They were indifferent to each other, as if they weren't a couple at all. They looked like two perfect strangers who just happened to eat on the same table.
After the meal, Lenny took his napkin and wiped his lips. After hesitating for a moment, Scarlet took a deep breath, making up her mind to tell him what happened that night.
"Lenny."
"Scarlet."
The two of them spoke at the same time.
Looking at him, Scarlet was nervous for a moment and said immediately, "You go first."
Lenny didn't refuse and spoke directly. "Scarlet, I want a divorce."
That short sentence echoed in her head for a few moments.
Right then, a servant came in and handed the papers to Scarlet. Lenny had already signed them. His handwriting was beautiful, like that of a seasoned calligrapher.
However, she was no longer in the mood to appreciate it.
Distribution of property was the most important thing that needed to be settled during a divorce.
Scarlet quickly went over the agreement. She would get two properties after the divorce, one was a shop, and the other was an apartment. Both of them were in a prime location with a market price of tens of millions of dollars. In addition, she would get fifty million dollars as compensation. She would even get a small company that pumped out an annual net profit of several million dollars.
It seemed that sleeping with Lenny once yielded a fair deal.
However, Scarlet was more curious about the reason Lenny wanted to divorce her.
She closed the folder containing the divorce papers and looked at him boldly for the first time.
Lenny met her gaze with equal intensity.
This was the first time that he had looked at her face carefully. Her face was small and delicate. Her eyes were big and beautiful, and they shone like a pair of gems. The pure and innocent look in her eyes reminded him of a pool of clear water.
She was very thin, as if his family had been treating her shabbily.
Her figure, however, was similar to that of the girl he met that night.
If Lenny crossed paths with that girl again, he would definitely want her to gain some weight. She was too skinny, which stirred up his sympathy.
"May I ask why?" Scarlet asked.
"Because I have someone else in my heart," he confessed.
The reason why Lenny married Scarlet was that he didn't want his mother to be torn between him and his grandmother.
So, for the sake of his mother, he agreed to the arranged marriage. Since then, the relationship between his mother and grandmother had become more amicable.
But now, his grandmother's health had been steadily declining, and she no longer had enough energy to make things difficult for his mother. What was more, Lenny wanted to find the girl that saved him that night and marry her. For him to be able to do that, he'd have to cut ties with Scarlet.
Scarlet was still young and still attending school. Their marriage had been carefully kept under wraps, so it had no impact on her life.
After the divorce, she would get a lot of money, which would enable her to live a carefree life.
Besides, she didn't like him either.
This was only the second time that they had seen each other. How was it possible for someone to fall in love with another after only meeting them twice?
Hearing Lenny's answer, Scarlet felt distressed for reasons she didn't even want to ponder.
It turned out that he had already fallen in love with someone else. If that was the case, then she didn't have to tell him the truth about that night. Otherwise, she would only make him feel uncomfortable.
Besides, wasn't this what she wanted to begin with? Didn't she go abroad to gather evidence of his cheating so that she could finally leave him? Now things worked out the way she wanted.
"Okay. I'll sign the papers." Scarlet spoke without hesitation.
Lenny was kind enough to her. Moreover, what happened that night wasn't his fault. He was clearly under the influence of something, maybe alcohol or drugs. He wasn't himself. Maybe he was even remorseful of what he'd done.
Scarlet picked up the pen and signed her name.
"Thank you."
Lenny thanked her for not making trouble for him. It was a peaceful break-up.
After dinner, Lenny left. He didn't plan to stay in the villa for the night.
After he left, Scarlet started packing up her things. The next day, Lenny sent a car to pick her up.
She looked back at the villa where she had lived for a year.
The place had stayed the same. She was leaving it in the same condition she'd first seen it in, as if she had never been there at all.
The only thing that had changed was that she was now a divorced woman.
After she and Lenny got divorced, Scarlet still felt as if she was in a trance.
Lenny's assistant pulled over in front of her.
Lenny rolled down his window, looked at her, and said calmly, "Let me give you a ride."
"No, thanks. I'll take a cab home. Thank you for taking care of me this past year," Scarlet replied, curling her lips into a sincere smile.
So what if they'd slept together for one night? Lenny had already given her a huge amount of money as compensation.
Without forcing her, Lenny just nodded and then told his assistant to drive.
Scarlet stood at the gates of the court and tried to hail a taxi from there.
Although it was autumn now, the weather was still very hot. It was just past ten o'clock in the morning, but the sun was already so scorching that people could hardly open their eyes.
The location of the court was a little remote, so it was difficult to get a taxi from there.
Scarlet had started sweating all over because of the heat, and before long, she'd begun feeling a little dizzy. Everything in front of her slowly blurred. Then, she blacked out and collapsed.
When she woke up again, she found herself lying in a hospital bed. Somebody had been kind enough to have her rushed to the hospital.
"What... What's wrong with me?" she asked a nurse.
"You suffered a heatstroke. Fortunately, you were attended to in time. You're pregnant. You should pay more attention to your health. But your baby is very healthy. You can leave here after getting some rest."
"What? What did you just say?"
Grabbing the nurse's hand, Scarlet felt her heart race.
"I said you got heatstroke."
"No, not that. Did you say I was pregnant? What do you mean?"
"Well, don't you know you're pregnant? You're three months along. I mean, you should've known that by now."
Scarlet was flabbergasted. The news came like a bolt from the blue.
Her period had always been irregular. Sometimes, she wouldn't even get her period for months, so when her period stopped coming, she didn't think much of it at all.
Besides, she took a morning-after pill after she slept with Lenny. There was no way she could get pregnant.
"It's impossible. I can't be pregnant. I have taken a contraceptive pill."
"Birth control pills aren't always one hundred percent effective. There's still a three-percent chance of conception. All contraceptive methods have a slim chance of failing. There's no guarantee that they'll succeed all the time," the nurse explained.
Upon hearing what the nurse said, Scarlet felt dizzy again and then fainted.
