And this time around, he might the only one who can stop it.

Chapter 1 Pilot

"Everyone, hurry. Mason Blackwood is at it again." A boy with curly blonde hair yelled as he barge into the classroom, his face soaked with sweat. He looked to have been running for a while and immediately ran back out after saying those words.

Immediately, the whole class ran out after him, each one going close to the edge of the balcony to see what was happening below. From up there, they could see it all clearly, a black haired boy and a green haired boy looked to be in some sort of heated argument as a little crowd gathered around them, cheering their names.

"You piece of useless crap, I will teach you never to mess with me again." The green haired boy yelled, his eyes glowing yellow with rage.

"Oh do you ever shut up Drake? Just come at me already." Mason, the black haired boy said with a grin as blood dropped from the little cut on his face. He looked to have been fighting for a while and was nearly out of stamina. One could see that he was barely hanging on with sheer will only.

As the crowd continued to cheer their names, the green haired rushed at him and threw a punch at his face but Mason was quick to move to the left, dodging the punch before landing a punch of his own at the boy's head. The crowd cheered as the punch landed on the boy's head.

Seeing this, the boy began to boil with rage as his yellow eyes glowed brighter. The next minute, a heavy gush of wind rushed out of his palm and headed forward towards Mason who was too slow to move to safety. The heavy wind swept him off his feet and threw him several meters away. Mason landed on the wall with a loud bang before falling on the floor, unable to move.

"Serves you right." The green haired boy said with a grin and brushed his nose before walking off, leaving the crowd behind.

"Damn it, I really thought he was going to win this time around." A male voice said from the crowd with a little snicker.

"Yeah, me too. But at the end, he's still just a powerless piece of crap." Another boy chipped in.

"I can't believe that marks his three hundred and twenty eight defeat since he began Avalon school. If it were me, I'd just quit." Someone said with a laugh as the crowd began to disperse until they was no one left there anymore.

Meanwhile, Mason laid on the ground with his chest heaving up and down as he took deep breaths to calm himself down. He tried to move but winced in pain as that part hurt a lot. It seemed a rib had broken there and would take some time to heal.

Just then, he heard the school bell ring indicating that it was time to go home. And with every ounce of strength he had left, Mason managed to get up as he headed down towards Beverly town where his house laid.

As he walked, he couldn't help but think back to the fight he just had with Drake, to how he was gaining the upper hand until Drake had decided to use his ability, the wind attribute. It was his three hundred and twenty eight defeat now, and each time he lost woefully.

In a world overrun by power and ability users, Mason was one of the majority to have not awakened an ability. And because he attended Avalon academy, a school filled with ability users and very few ordinary humans, he was often bullied.

But as the bullying went on, Mason had learn to defend himself and would only lose whenever his opponent activated their ability. But the fact that he kept losing bothered him and everyday he kept praying that he would awakened an ability, only he was seventeen years of age now and nothing has happened so far.

As Mason rounded a bend that led to the next street, he came across a huge poster that always intrigued him and pause. It was an image of five neohumans, a term used to describe ability users fighting against five dragon bloods, humanity worse enemy.

One hundred and sixty years ago, when humanity did not have neohumans, a horde of dragon bloods descended on earth from another world, destroying everything in it's part. They were a race made from real dragons with the urge to kill and dominate everything in their part.

How they came to earth and what they wanted was a mystery to humans and because humanity was unprepared, countless lives were lost and many homes destroyed. Humanity was at the brink of extinction as their weapons were rendered useless against them. And that was when it happened, a large rock came flying through the rift that the dragon bloods had past through, smashing into million of pieces and transforming into a blue mist by the time it shattered.

And as humans began to inhale the strange mist that had now mixed with the ecosystem, they awakened special abilities and were then revered to as neohumans. With the neohumans in sight, humanity now stood a chance against the dragon bloods. And as the war went on, humanity managed to defeat the dragon bloods and drive them away from earth.

But with fear of them ever returning, the government created an organization of neohumans that would one day help fight against the dragon bloods if they were to ever returned. And Mason who was born and grew up at the orphanage has always hope to awakened an ability and become a powerful neohuman that will one day fight against the dragon bloods like those drawn in the picture in front of him right now. But with each passing day, the dream of becoming a neohuman seem impossible to reach and there was nothing he could do to change that.

With a long sigh, Mason turned and walked away, heading down towards the orphanage with a downhearted look on his face.

By the time he got to the orphanage, it was already dark as he couldn't walk fast due to how weak his body was from the fight earlier. But on getting to the orphanage, Mason composed himself with a smile on his face, trying hard to hide the pain from Harper, a woman in her fourthies who has been looking after him and what was left of the orphanage.

She was a former neohuman who was dismissed from work after she had lost one of her leg during a mission that went wrong. She then went home to take over the orphanage that her parent were running before they had pass away. Since then, she had been the one raising the little children at the orphanage and Mason had been grateful to her so far.

"Open up Mrs Harper, I'm home!" Mason yelled as he knocked on the door repeatedly. A few moments later, the door opened up to reveal an angry Mrs Harper who was standing by the door with the help of her crutches.

"You're late Mason, again." Mrs Harper said with an angry tone while Mason chuckled as he walked past her.

"Come on Mrs Harper, I'm not a kid anymore you know. I'm seventeen now." Mason said as he walked towards the dinner table were everyone were seated. They were about ten in number including Mason and Mrs Harper and they seemed to have been waiting for him.

"What took you so long brother Mason. Did you get into a fight again?" A little girl of about the age of five said while pouting her lips.

"Of course not Dolly. Besides, your big bro is really strong okay." Mason replied and gently tap her head while she smiled.

"I'm not so sure about that since I've never seen you win a fight before." Sabrina, a girl who looked to be around the age of Mason said with a laugh.

"Or maybe you just weren't there when I had my wins." Mason retorted and the two broke down laughing.

"Alright you two. Enough with the jokes . It's time to eat." Mrs Harper said as she took her seat while Mason nodded as they began eating.

As they ate, Mason couldn't help but smile as he glanced at everyone's faces. This was his favorite time of day. The only time he truly felt at home. Although they weren't related by blood, they were still one big family. And often, Mason would wish he awakened as a neohuman so he could become rich enough to protect his family. And one day, he hope, that some God out there might eventually listen to him and grant him his wish.

Chapter 2 The Wild Chase

Mason laid on the bed with his face facing the ceiling. It has been a few hours since everyone had finished eating and have gone to sleep. And now as he laid on the bed trying to get some sleep, Mason could not help but think about his life and how he had ended up here.

According to Mrs Harper, they had found him laying on a basket in front of the orphanage seventeen years ago. It seems whoever his parents were had given up on him and had decided it was better for the orphanage to raise him instead. The only thing they had left him was a pendant and a note that revealed his name. And now as the years went by, Mason could not help but wonder who his real parents were and why they had abandon him. He wondered if they were neohumans or ordinary humans like he was. But the one thing he'd always wish for was a chance to meet them and ask them all this questions in person.

As Mason laid on the bed, thinking. He couldn't help but hear strange noises coming out from all through the building. Immediately, he got up on his feet and moved closer to the open window, wondering who it was.

His room was located on the second floor and so it was easy for him to see everything clearly from up here. There was a group of six men standing outside the building with torches in their hands. At first, Mason had thought they were friends of Mrs Harper as she often invited her friends over, but the moment he saw the strange masks covering their faces, Mason immediately recognized who they were.

Neo-thieves, a term used to describe neohumans who used their ability to break into people's home and steal their goods. But what were they doing this far down in Beverly town? Mason wondered and slowly went close to the door. He opened the door and gasped as he noticed something. It seems another few neo-thieves were already in the building and had already began to steal their goods.

"I'm the oldest here, I have to stop them somehow." Mason mumbled under his breathe as he tiptoed to the staircase to find Mrs Harper standing there while holding her crutches. It seems the noise have woken her up.

"Mason, what the hell are you doing here? Go back to your room now." Mrs Harper whispered immediately she saw Mason.

"I couldn't sleep, the noises woke me up too." Mason replied as he approached her. "They are neo-thieves aren't they? We have to stop them before they take everything."

"I know." Mrs Harper replied curtly with a downhearted look on her face. Even if she wanted to stop them, there was nothing she could do against a large group of neo-thieves in her condition. She had to choose between letting them have their way or risk losing the children and she chose the former.

"I'm sorry Mason. But we will have to let them have their way. I'm afraid I won't be able to stop them." Mrs Harper said with tears in her eyes while Mason clenched his fist. There was no way he was going to let them have their way. The rations was something Mrs Harper had spent her entire life savings trying to get and it was enough to last them for three years at most. Allowing them to take everything meant the rest of them were going to starve to death and there was no way he was going to let that happened.

Immediately, Mason took a deep breathe and held his pendant for three seconds before rushing down the stairs.

"Leave them alone Mason, you won't be able to stop them." Mrs Harper said with tears, trying to stop Mason but it was too late. Mason slowly picked up two iron rod and tiptoed towards the back of one of the neo-thieves before smashing it on the back of his head with every fiber of strength he had left his body. The force was so strong that the neo-thieve collapse on the ground, thereby alerting the ones outside and the one inside.

Immediately, they all rushed inside to find their fellow man lying on the ground with blood oozing from his head while a teenage boy stood next to him.

"Come get me you filthy bastards!" Mason yelled and threw the other rod at them before bolting out through the open window.

The rod landed on the head of one of the neo-thieves, injuring him on the spot and drawing blood. The man groan and clenched his fist, his face boiling with anger. He was bigger than the rest and seemed to be the leader of the gang. And Immediately the rod landed on his head, he yelled with a voice that seem to scare even his men themselves before rushing out through the window himself with his men following behind him.

"Stop there you little bastard!" The man yelled and threw a green orb at the back of Mason who was now running down towards the woods. The orb missed his head by a few inches and landed on a tree ahead of him, shattering it on the spot.

Mason gasped as he witness this and quickly held onto his pendant as he continued running.

Another neo-thieve threw a ball of wind at him and this time around it landed on Mason, throwing him several meters ahead. Mason groaned in pain as he landed on the ground with several cuts on his face.

But the moment he saw that they were getting closer, he stood up and continued to run, heading deep into the woods.

Despite the pain and cut he got from the fall, Mason knew he had to keep running so he could get them far away from the orphanage and long enough for Mrs Harper to get the authorities. It was the only way he could save the orphanage and the goods.

With that thought in mind, Mason continued running and was lucky enough to dodge the attacks that were being thrown at him. But his luck soon ran out when he got to a cliff with no way to go. He looked around trying to find a way out but saw none. Clearly, it was a dead end with nothing but death for those who dared to jump as it was several meters deep.

Eventually, the neo-thieves caught up to him and Mason could see the rage and hatred on their faces. He quickly scanned them and noticed they were about seven in number and each one with an ability that was between the range of level 2.5 and 3. And Mason knew they was no way he could fight them all by himself.

"You little bastard, how dare you try to play hero!" The man said with venom in his voice while Mason felt his pulse quicken. But he quickly compose himself and held his pendant as he said in all seriousness, "I bet you don't even know what that word means."

Hearing this, the man clenched his fist and threw a green orb at him. The orb flew so fast that Mason could not even follow it and eventually, it landed on his chest, leading to aggressive release of air that threw him down the cliff.

For a few agonizing seconds, he was suspended in midair, flailing his arms and legs as he hoped for someone to save him. But it was of no use as he felt himself falling and falling until he hit the ground with a bone - jarring thud that knocked the breathe out from his lungs and shattered his entire body.

"Ahhhh!" Mason screamed as he felt his entire bones broken and the world slipping out from under him. He felt disoriented and in a matter of seconds, his blood had covered the entire horizon.

Just then, the sky thundered and a heavy rain began to fall, soaking his entire body and mixing with his blood. And as the blood flowed towards the pendant, something strange happened. The pendant reacted and glowed brightly, illuminating the entire horizon. But Mason was too weak to notice it as he was slowly dying. But just before he lost consciousness, he saw something, a flicker in his eyes. It was the blurred image of a blue screen floating in front of him.

But before he could figure out what it was, he saw a world of blackness coming to meet him and blacked out, but not before the blue screen could display a message.

Chapter 3 The Demon System

The Next Day

Mason slowly opened his eyes and blink away the black spots covering his vision. His head was humming, and it was a few seconds before his vision focused and he could see where he was.

He was lying on the ground with his face facing the sky. The entire ground was soak red with his blood while his clothes looked torn and damaged.

Slowly, he stood on his feet and looked around him to discover the blood that seemed to cover the entire horizon. The moment he saw the blood, Mason groan as everything came rushing back to him.

He remembered being chased by the neo-thieves the other night and had eventually fallen down from the cliff after getting to a dead end. He had felt every bone in his body broken and his life draining out from him. He didn't need anyone to tell him that he was going to die. So how the hell was he alive and breathing now? How the hell had he managed to survive the fall? He should be dead right now but how come he was okay? Mason wondered as he looked up at the cliff which was way up ahead. And then it clicked, he had seen something just before he lost consciousness, he had seen the pendant glowing brightly and then a blue screen had appeared in front of him. Now that he thought about it, he noticed it was huge and seemed to resemble a system.

Immediately he thought that in his head, a blue screen appeared right on front of his eyes with information he didn't know existed.

[You have unlocked the demon system]

"The demon system? What the fuck is that suppose to mean?" Mason wondered as he went ahead to look at the few notes that followed.

"Oh my God. What the heck is this?" Mason screamed in his head as he fell on his feet whereas the blue screen kept floating right in front of him.

Slowly but carefully, he reached out his hand to touch it but gasped as they slowly went through it. He withdrew them immediately and slowly stood on his feet.

"What the fuck does this means? Is this the reason why I survived?" Mason wondered as he kept staring at the screen. It seemed like those old games he used to play at the school cafe but what he didn't understand was why he was seeing this.

As Mason kept on thinking, he noticed there were more tabs on the status screen and quickly glued his eyes on the skill tab. Immediately he thought that in his head, the screen changed to the skill tab.

As Mason watched the screen, he noticed there were no skills available on the skill tab as everything was locked. So he immediately went to the shop and saw that it was also locked.

"Why is everything so useless?" Mason thought as he went towards the last tab on the screen, the quest tab.

"What does this means?" Mason said out loud and thought of closing the system and immediately the system closed. Surprised by what just happened, he thought of opening it and it opened. Then he thought of closing it and again, it closed. Immediately he realized that the system was telepathic and worked whenever his mind gave it command like the old games he used to play.

"But does this means I have awakened an ability?" Mason thought as he kept staring into space. But he had never heard of an ability that worked as a system, or did all the other neohumans have a system like this? Mason wondered but quickly push the thought away from his head. It was absurd to think like that. There was no way the other neohumans ability worked like this. If they did then the entire world should know about it but they didn't which meant he was the only one with a system like this.

With that thought in mind, Mason pulled himself together and was about to leave when he noticed the pendant was no where to be found. He turned and search all around but still could not find it.

"Did someone steal it while I was unconscious?" He thought in his head but quickly push away the thought from his mind. There was no way that was possible as this side of the cliff looked deserted. If anything the pendant must have gone missing and he was going to forget about it as it wasn't important anyways. It was time he got back to the orphanage as he didn't want to keep Mrs Harper worried.

With that thought in mind, Mason turned and began walking down towards the only path he could see, hopefully it would lead him back to Beverly town where the orphanage was located.

He walked for about an hour before finally arriving at the orphanage where a little crowd was gathered. There were two cars parked in front of the building whereas Mrs Harper could be seen speaking to two men in the same uniform. Immediately he saw the uniform, Mason recognized them to be from the authorities, an organization in charge of neo crime activities happening around the towns. Mrs Harper must have called them after he led the neo-thieves away. Mason thought with a smile as he began walking towards them.

As he approached, a little girl of about five years ran towards him after recognizing him from afar.

"Big brother Mason, I miss you." The girl said with tears in her tears, alerting the others who came rushing over.

"Mason, are you okay?" Mrs Harper was the one asking this time around with tears in her eyes.

"Of course I'm okay Mrs Harper. I told you I was strong right?" Mason replied and watched as Mrs Harper eyes scanned the torn clothes on his body.

"You don't look okay Mason. Did those bastards do this to you?" She asked with concern in her voice while Mason just smile.

"I'm really okay Mrs Harper, you don't have to worry. All I did was hide in a cave anyways." Mason lied, knowing there was no way he could tell them that he fell from the cliff and miraculously survived. They'd think he was mad or something.

"Really?" She asked and Mason nodded.

"Still, don't you ever pull that shit on me ever again okay?" She added and Mason nodded and watched as the two men approached him.

"I guess you must be Mason. That was really brave of you. Because of you we were able to get here in time and secure the orphanage." The man said, offering a handshake to Mason who was taken aback but quickly compose himself and shook the man's hand, knowing it was rude to keep an elderly man waiting.

"It was nothing. I just did it to protect my family." Mason said smiling. "Did you manage to catch them?"

"I'm afraid no." The man replied politely. "They were already gone by the time we got here. We searched the woods you all went through but could not find any signs of them."

"Oh." Was all Mason could say as he clenched his fist. He really wanted them to pay for what they did.

"Anyways, it's nice to meet you Mason. I like brave kids like you. Come join the authorities if you ever feel like saving this little town. I will be sure to create a spot for you." The man said with a smile and tapped his shoulder before entering into the car and driving off, leaving only a gust of wind in his wake.

"Come on in Mason, you must be starving." Mrs Harper said and walked into the building while Mason followed quietly behind her.

"Hey we heard what happened from Mrs Harper. I didn't know you had it in you." Sabrina said with a smile as she punched Mason on the arm playfully.

Mason just smiled as they kept walking but unknowingly to them, he just couldn't help but keep staring at the blue screen in front of him, wondering if all this was merely a dream or not.

If not, then did it mean that he had really awakened an ability and was now a neohuman? Did this means that he finally had a chance to become a powerful neohuman and fight against the dragon bloods if they were to ever return?

Well, there was only way to find out. Mason thought as he kept staring at the blue screen in front of him.
