Chapter 1 Collateral

"Ugh! My stomach hurts! I have to get something to eat, but how? This rain has refused to stop. I don't want to get drenched and I am so hungry". I said, rubbing my stomach and looking through the window to check if the rain had stopped a bit.

I decided to call my friend if she could get something for me. "Hi Melissa, how are you doing? Where are you now? I was hoping you could help me buy food. I'm starving".

"Girl! I'm not around. You know it's raining and I need to be kept warm, you know". She giggled.

"You and this invisible man. When do you intend to show me your precious man? Let me try to get something to eat. Some are looking for what to eat while some are being eaten". I teased her.

"Maureen! You are acting this way because John is not there with you. If he was around, I am sure you would scream your lungs out". She laughed out loud. "I will call you later, girl. I don't want to keep my man waiting". She said, hanging up the call.

I have to start getting ready to go to the office. It's getting late. I will send the gateman when I get to the office to get the food for me.

*******

I got to the office and saw a letter on my desk. "Who could have dropped this letter? I wasn't expecting any letter from anyone". I thought, opening the letter to read the content in it.

"No way! This can't be happening now". I screamed, grabbing my phone to call Melissa.

"Can you come to my office please? It's urgent. I need to show you something".

"Okay, I am on my way now. Let me quickly freshen up".

After my parents had passed away in a ghastly accident on their way home, Melissa and John were the only family I had left. And the only memory I had with my parents is about to be taken away from me.

"What's the problem girl? You sounded so serious on the phone". She said, dropping her bag on the table.

I replied in a sobbing voice. "The bank wants to take my company from me. I just got to the office and I saw a letter on my desk. I decided to read the content in it, and I saw that my dad collected a loan from them to build this company and he used it as collateral. But he couldn't pay up the loan before he passed away. I can't let them take it from me, Melissa. You know it's the only thing I have left".

"How much is left and didn't they give you time to pay up?". She asked, looking worried.

"Two hundred million! And I have to pay up within five days or I vacate the premises. Where do I get that kind of money from?".

"We have to act fast before the given time elapses. But where do we get that kind of money from? John doesn't have that kind of money and I don't too". She signed.

Maureen kept on pacing around. Thinking of what to do, and where to get the money from. I decided to call my boyfriend, John to come over.

"Hi babe". I said in a low voice. I explained everything that happened.

"You know I don't have that kind of money. What do we do?". He said.

"I don't know. That was why I called you to come over. Do you have anyone or know anyone that can lend you some money? I will pay the person back. I just want to sort out this one first".

John smiled. "Even if five of my friends should add up their money together, it won't be up to five hundred thousand let alone two hundred million".

We were all contemplating on our next step. I can't let them take my dad's company away. I will be left with nothing. Where do I start from? My boyfriend can't assist me financially, Melissa doesn't have up to that amount, and I don't have up to that amount either.

"Maureen, can't we plead with them to extend the date a little, so we can look for who to lend us the money. Five days is too small". Melissa said, looking at Maureen who was going through her contact to see if she could call anyone for assistance.

"What if I sell my car and some assets in my house?". I asked, biting my finger.

"Girl, don't make me laugh. Who will be interested in your Toyota Camry 2010? It's an old model. People don't use that car now, you know".

"Sigh! I'm hungry. I need to eat something". I said, dialing the gateman's number to get me food.

"Are you telling me you haven't eaten since you called me in the morning?". She asked surprisedly.

"After reading the letter, I lost my appetite. But I can't bear it any longer. Before I will add an ulcer to my problem". I sighed.

It's getting late already and we were preparing to go back home. I still haven't figured out how to pay back the loan. I couldn't eat the food the gateman bought for me. The only thing I had in mind was how to pay back the loan.

"Let's go home. Tomorrow might be a better day". Melissa said, tapping my shoulder while I let out a faint smile.

"I hope so. I'm so confused right now. My head is banging so bad. I need to rest". I said, carrying my bag to leave. "Babe, should I drop you and Melissa off?

"No worries baby, go home and relax. We shouldn't add to your stress. Hopefully, we will sort things out before it gets to the due date". He said, trying to comfort me.

Melissa bid her goodbye and promised to call her when she got home. John saw her off and waited till she drove off before leaving.

Chapter 2 Daring Offer

I wasn't at ease. I decided to go to the bar closest to me to have a drink. Maybe it would cool me off a bit.

I got to the bar and told the bartender to give me whiskey sour. While sipping my drink, I saw Michael, the flirt billionaire "Isn't that Micheal". I said, trying to be sure if he was the one.

I decided to join him at his table. "Hi, you must be Michael?" I asked, my eyes fixed on him.

"And you are?". He said arrogantly. I wasn't surprised because I knew he was an arrogant flirt. "I'm Maureen...I paused. Maureen Lawrence". I said, stretching my hand for a handshake.

He glanced at me. I wasn't worried about his attitude. I only decided to meet him because I needed his assistance.

"Maureen, whatever you call yourself, how may I help you?". He said, waving his hand and staring disgustingly.

"I know this may sound stupid to you, but I need your help. My company is on the verge of crashing because of debt, and I only have five days to pay off the debt. Can you please assist me with it?"

He laughed mockingly. "I barely know you and you just walked up to me to ask for money that you didn't give to me and you think I would give it to you because you are pretty?

"Not really. I...I". "I stuttered, trying to look for the word to say.

"I what? Did the cat cut off your tongue? Please leave, as you can see, I was in a meeting before you came to interrupt us". He said, pointing at the girls sitting beside him.

I have to coax him. I can't let go easily, he is the only person that can help me out of this mess. "Please sir, I would do anything you ask of me, please".

He stared at her seductively. "Anything? You don't look bad. I will assist you on one condition. If you would agree to marry me. You see, my dad wants me to get married, and I can't bring a whore to my house as a wife. So, we will sign a contract marriage".

"No way! What do you take me for? I have a boyfriend. I can't get married to you. I don't love you. I just came for assistance, you can't give me that kind of condition".

He smirked. "Oh! You need my help, and you are dictating for me? You have a boyfriend? Fine, go to your boyfriend, so he could lend you the money you are asking for. And who said we are getting married for love? If you can't do it, then leave.

I gave it a deep thought. What would John think of me? He would be so heartbroken and disappointed in me. I don't have a choice. This is my only chance.

I sighed. "Fine, I accept your proposition."

"Now you are talking. I will be going to the court tomorrow to bring the papers, so you can sign it. It's my pleasure doing business with your Miss Maureen".

I nodded. It's past eleven at night and I'm feeling a bit worn out after searching for how to sort the loan. I got home finally and went to take a shower. I still couldn't believe I would be accepting a contract marriage from that flirt. "Ugh! This is the worst decision I have ever made in my entire life. Why me!". I groaned.

*****

It's morning already, the sun is bright, and the sunlight is warm and not harsh. The birds keep chirping, and the breeze is cool. The leaves of the plants are covered by dew drops. The level of noise pollution in the mornings is less compared to the other times of the day.

"I need to meet up with Michael today. Why do I feel so weak? I said, yawning and stretching my body.

Maureen was dressing up when her phone rang. She looked at the caller, it was her boyfriend calling. Her heart skipped a bit. "Could he have heard about it? But I haven't told anyone yet". She decided to ignore the call. She called Michael instead.

"Hi Michael, where should I meet up with you to sign the contract?".

"Hey, my soon-to-be wife". He said, mockingly. "Meet me at the Velvet Glove Restaurant".

She got to the restaurant and met him talking to one of the waitresses.

"Oh! You are here. Have a seat". He said, staring at her. "Did you just come out of the oven? Because you are looking absolutely baked...I mean, beautiful!".

I smirked. "I didn't come here to be flattered. This is what you say to those ladies that makes them attracted to you, but I am not one of them".

"You must be a stubborn one. Well, this is it. Go through it and sign it". He said, dropping a file on the table.

Maureen went through the file and signed it. "I hope I don't regret this". I said, looking at him.

He smiled. "You won't, my dear wife. So, we have a wedding to plan. We would be going to my dad's place to seek his blessings. You had better be at your best behavior. I don't want him to be suspicious. I will be sending the money to you, so you can pay for your company's debt".

She couldn't hide her expression when she heard him mention the payment on the loan. "Yes, yes! Thanks a lot. I would be on my best behavior".

He transferred the money as promised. Immediately, Maureen transferred the money to the bank and heaved a sigh of relief.

"Let's go now. My dad will be waiting for us. I told him about our coming".

"What about your mom?". I asked, looking concerned.

"She is late. Stop interrogating me". He said, rudely.

"But you didn't inform me we would be meeting up with him today?".

"Does it matter? Let's go. Don't keep him waiting".

"So arrogant". I grumbled, following him from behind.

Chapter 3 MEETING HIS DAD

They got to Mr Williams's house. Maureen took a glance at his big mansion. "No wonder he is called a billionaire for a reason. This mansion is so big. Damn!".

Michael glowered at her. "Come on in. Stop staring like those middle-class people. Haven't you seen a mansion before?".

He instructed one of the maids to tell him about their arrival.

Mr Williams who had been in his room listening to Good Vibrations by the Beach Boys got interrupted by the maid. "Sir, your son is here and he came with a guest".

"Oh yes! I was expecting them". He said, following her to the sitting room. He sat on his favorite couch. Nobody dares to sit on it. He enjoyed how soft and relaxing the couch was.

"You must be Maureen, I have heard a lot about you". He smiled.

"Yes, I am sir. It's my pleasure meeting you".

"Don't call me sir, call me dad. Besides, you will be getting married to my son, so stop sirs". He smiled. Then continued, "My son hasn't brought any woman to this house or showed me any. You must be so special for him to bring you here and choose you as his wife".

Michael interrupted him. "Dad, of course, she is special. You see Dad, she has always been with me through my rough days and never left my side. I love her so much". He said, holding her hands and looking at her.

Maureen couldn't understand why he was putting on an act but decided to play along, but his dad isn't as arrogant as he is, where did he get his attitude from?

"Yes sir. We have come this far. It hasn't been easy, but here we are". I smiled.

"I just remembered my darling wife. I pray she is at peace wherever she is. I wished she was alive to see this". He paused, then continued. "Love is a beautiful thing and can be so complicated sometimes. Learn to communicate with one another. Try not to let arguments turn into screaming matches. Stay open-minded about your sex life. Don't be afraid to do your own thing and let your partners do theirs, learn to forgive, live modestly, and lastly, carve out time for just the two of you". He said, calmly.

Maureen felt guilty. If only he knew that we were not into each other. She became emotional and had to excuse herself, Michael followed her.

"I can't do this, Michael. I feel guilty after everything your dad said. He doesn't deserve to be treated this way. What if he finds out that we were not what we claimed we were".

"He can't find out if you shut up and play your part well. You can't do what? Do you know I can easily contact those bankers and lay false accusations about you? I can lure them with my money and they would believe me. Do you want everything you and your parents had worked hard for to go down the drain? Dare me". He threatened.

Maureen knew how influential he was and wouldn't dare to cross his part. "Fine, I have heard you. Let's go to the sitting room before your dad gets suspicious".

"Oh! Here they are. The latest couple in town". He said, introducing them to the event planners he had invited.

"Dad, who are they?". He asked, holding Maureen's hand.

"Event planners. We have a wedding to plan. So, Maureen my dear, these people will do an excellent job on your wedding. You don't have to stress yourself. Relax like a queen that you are while they do their job, okay?".

I nodded in agreement without saying a word. The news about my wedding spread like wildfire. My phone had started buzzing with different notifications. "Why do I feel so uncomfortable? Am I making the right decision?". I said, looking at the mirror in front of me. My heart skipped immediately, my phone rang, it was Melissa.

"Melissa, how are you doing?". I said, feebly.

"Is the news true? Maureen, what were you thinking? What about John. You didn't think about how he would feel when he found out about this. Since when did you become self-centered? Answer me, Maureen!". She screamed.

"I don't love him anymore". I lied.

"Since when? You have always loved him. You and I know that you are not being sincere. You are hiding something from me".

"We can't be together and that's it". I said, hanging up the call. My heart became heavy. I thought I was prepared for the outcome, but I guess I wasn't. I decided to go for a walk when I heard my name.

"Maureen, Maureen!". John called, running towards her. "Maureen, what happened? Why did you do this? I know you have a lot in your head, that's why you are not thinking straight. But it's not too late. I can pretend like it never happened. Please! I should be the one you are getting married to, not him. You don't love him". He said, tearfully.

"You want to marry me, but what do you have, huh? Nothing John! I have to save my company. I can't let whatever we had jeopardize what I have worked hard for. It's too late, John". I said, acting tough.

"Oh! I knew it. It's all about the company. You did this to save your company. Please, give us another chance, so I can prove to you that I can be helpful to you. Please, Maureen". He said, holding her hands.

"There is no us, John. Move on. I'm sure with time, you will heal. I have to leave now. Act like we have never met". I said, looking at Michael who had been watching us.

"No! You can't do this to me. Maureen!". He screamed, running after me.

I couldn't hold back the tears anymore. I ran into Michael's car that was parked and he drove off.
