Chapter 1 Lys

Life, to others, might be a bed of roses, but to me, it's not. I've tried to be the best I can be. I've endeavoured to be the best brother I can, for my siblings, but it seems the more I try to be better, the more I think I can't ever be.

"Lys, we're off to school, love you!" Mara shouts excitedly, just like always.

She's only but a bubbly girl.

I haven't seen anyone as excited to attend school as she is, she's a cheerful spirit despite her medical conditions.

"Take care and don't forget to take your medicine," I turn towards the silent twin, "Mikel I trust you will take care of your kid sister, will you?" I pat him on his shoulder.

Mikel murmured in reply.

"What?" I bent to hear his words. But he shrugged my hand off his shoulder.

"I will, brother, and for your information, I'm not a kid anymore. I am starting high school today." Mara rolled her eyes at me.

After the movie, we watched a week, or two ago, she has learned to roll her eyes at everything.

To her, it's the latest expression.

They both walk out the door, with Mara skipping like the little girl she is.

"Be careful!" I shout out to them.

I worry about her a lot, she's a fragile being.

"Lys, always the worried mother hen," Grys took a bite from the pancake on the plate, with his mouth full, he resumes talking, "relax for once and enjoy life," he takes another bite. His words were muffled a bit by the food in his mouth.

"You know It's not healthy to talk with your mouth full?" I caution with my eyebrows raised at him.

He waved me off," forget about that, nothing is....." he starts coughing, pointing at the water on the table, he holds his throat.

I almost restrained myself from giving him water, but being the doting mother hen as he jokes, I offer him the water.

He gulped the water in two swallows.

"Take it easy, you might choke again," I lightly pat him on his back.

Removing my hand, he glared at me, "if it were to be Mara that choked, you would have given her the water before she can ask for it", he accused poor old me.

"If it were to be Mara, she won't have talked with her mouth full, moreover you are not Mara and you will never be." I frown.

He stuck his tongue out at me, "someone is practising Favoritism. You're always saying you love us equally, but we know it's Mara you love most", he pouts.

Sporadically, I have a hard time believing Grys is an eighteen years boy and not a seven-year-old. His behaviour makes a person confused.

" I love you all equally, it's just that I give special attention to Mara based on her health issues." I sigh.

He sobers at that.

He gets uncomfortable whenever her health issues are brought up.

" You're dressed up today, where are you heading to?" he raised a brow at me.

I know he's trying to change the topic, but I let it slide,

"I am going for a job interview", I smile, readjusting my tie for the umpteenth time this morning.

"Which company? Last I checked, you've gone on all the job interviews you applied to."

He has a point there.

I wrote the application letter last two months, and I had forgotten about it until I got a mail from the company.

I didn't make my siblings aware of it, as I don't want them to be disappointed if I don't get the job done.

We're in dire need of cash, and it won't help to get their hope up.

The company have been my dream for as long as I can remember and getting an appointment was like a dream come true.

"I forgot all about it since it's been almost two months since I sent the application until I got their mail", I check the time on my watch, and saw it's currently 7:30, and I need to be at the company by 9:00 on the dot.

"I've got to go, make sure to attend classes, it wouldn't pay to skip school", I narrow my eyes at him.

"I will, I promise", he raised both hands in surrender.

" Better."

I exited the house and walked to the bus station.

We live in the poorest area in our city and the company is located at the heart of the city, an hour's drive from my current location.

The bus was almost filled, but I managed to squeeze myself between two plump females.

I would have waited for the second bus if not for the urgent task at hand.

"Boy, why are you wearing business clothes on a school day?" the pink lipped lady asks.

I blush at her question,

"gods! You look more handsome when you blush, red's a good colour on you," the red-lipped lady comments.

People have always regarded me as a high school student based on my petite frame, if you don't know better, you will mistake me for a female.

Most have commented on the fact I can easily pass as a girl if I were to wear a dress and no one will be none the wiser.

" I am going for a job interview," I smile politely.

"Is it for a play at school, darling?" the other asked?

Are you deaf, or should I say blind?

I said I am going for a job interview. And for your information, I am not a high school student!!

I wanted to shout but couldn't instead I said, "I am going for a job interview at Firestick cosmetics company."

The red lip woman placed a palm on her heart, "bless me, I thought you to be a homeschooler, you don't look older than seventeen!" she exclaims, causing the other occupants of the bus to turn towards us.

" So I've been told", I murmur in answer, blushing hard at the attention I was attracting.

"Your mom must be proud of having a handsome, intelligent young man like you're. If I had a son, I would have paired you with him, you will make a beautiful bride." I blush harder, my cheeks hot from exertion.

" My mom's now among the angels", I whisper. Not wanting to spoil their joyful mood,

but it was no use, as they book shared a look.

"Am so sorry, dear, we weren't aware." She gave me a look of pity.

I hate it when people apologize for something they didn't commit, why would they apologize for my mom's death? Are they her murderers?

"It's okay, it happened a long time ago", I force a smile,

"still dear, losing a mom is a painful thing and for someone as young as you're", the red lip lady says.

Luckily, they didn't engage me in another conversation for the entirety of the ride.

Chapter 2 Firestick

After I exited the bus at the city entrance, I board a taxi to the company.

The driver was extra chatty, but I managed to draw out his voice, lost in thoughts of the interview, I wasn't paying attention to his words, I just nod at whatever he said.

I alighted from the cab and brought out my wallet to pay.

"I will give you double the money for a few minutes in the back car", he smiles suggestively, showing his tobacco-stained teeth.

I almost gagged at the sight.

The thought of what he's insinuating brought bile up my throat, but I manage to quell the urge to purge.

"I rather hump a dead rat", I spat. I three the money on his face, and stormed out with anger.

"Teasing bitch!" he shouts.

I ignore him, not wanting to draw unnecessary attention to me, should I stop for a word exchange.

Not only am I concerned about people, but I won't allow him to spoil my day for me.

"Your ID card, please," a bulky man in a suit, stopped me at the door.

I showed him my ID and after a minute or so of identity verification, I was allowed into the building.

Wow.

That was my first thought the moment I stepped my feet inside the well-known company.

The gleaming glass windows were reflecting the rays of the Sun in ways I haven't seen before.

The whole decor of the down floor is just out of the world, there was a see-through elevator on the left side and a more personal one at the extreme.

The workers went about their businesses in well-made custom-made designer suits, there wasn't an underdressed one among them.

I felt intimidated in my well-worn pants and old shoes, I blushed in embarrassment when I felt their curious stares at me.

A female walked past in a well-ironed black shirt, a black Gucci skirt and black heels, her red hair tied up in a ponytail to compliment her looks.

"Are you here for the interview?" I hear the receptionist ask the moment the Gucci girl stopped at her table (the receptionist's).

"Yes ma'am", the girl was all politeness.

I don't blame her at all, working in this company is an automatic ticket to any job position you want in any company.

Coupled with the pay and their workers' bonus, the job is the best among the other companies.

"Take the elevator to the second floor where the others are, someone will be there shortly to interview you", the receptionist turned back to her task, dismissing her.

I didn't bother asking for my directions, I just followed the girl.

Turning when she noticed my presence, she gives me a once over.

Her upturned nose was a clear indication of her disapproval of my attire.

"Are you here for the job interview?" she asked the moment we stepped into the elevator, taking care to keep a noticeable distance between us.

" Yes I am, any problem?" I raise a brow.

If she has a problem with that, it's her plate of oatmeal, not mine.

"You don't look like a person attending an interview, you look...." she gives me another once over" underdressed for this job interview", she leans towards me as if sharing a secret," a word of advice, leave now before you're thrown out by the interviewers. You won't get the job, seeming like you belong to the slum you came out from", she bitched.

" It's none of your concern, you're an interviewee just like I.

You are not entitled to belittle me. I know I'm not dressed as extravagantly as you're yet that doesn't give you the right to insult me, if you want an insult just give me a sign", turning towards the door, I ignored her.

It doesn't take forever to realize a person's personality, it just took me seconds to find out hers.

" I'm just trying to help you out", she says a moment later.

"Shove that your so-called help up your ass bitch, I don't care!" I shout at her.

"You're similar to the slums you came out from, you can take the monkey out of the jungle, but you can't take the jungle out of the monkey and -" the elevator dings, signifying our arrival.

*

There were seven of us in total, three males, I included and four females.

Bitchy girl tried her tactics on a blonde barbie, and she gave her the tongue lashing of her life...

The same with the petite brunette, who gave her a run for her money.

Watching her have, as she tried to ward off competition, is the highlight of my day.

Checking the time on my wristwatch, I discover it was almost 10 and the said interviewer was nowhere to be found.

The interview was scheduled to start by 9 and he or she was an hour late.

"Sorry, I'm late."

We turned at the voice.

The man who stepped into the office looked like he was just woken up from sleep.

He was putting on a now rumpled dress shirt with designer's slack, his brown hair was messy as if he ran his hands through it numerous times, despite its wildness, the hair fits him.

His boyish handsome face was complimented by his sea-green eyes, judging from where he's standing, I can tell he's a 7'4 (2.24 m) tall frame to my 5 '4 petite sizes.

"Let's proceed", he walked into the office leaving us behind, a few minutes later,

"Gladys Ura," we hear him call from his office.

The red-haired girl confidently walked into the office.

"Gods." I lean on the chair I was sitting on.

"Hi." One of the males smiled at me as he sat next to me.

"Hi." I smile back, despite how nervous I am.

"I'm Fechi." He stretched his hand for a shake.

"Lys." Smiling, I shook his hand. "It's nice meeting you, Fechi."

"The pleasure is all mine." He smiled, "so, how do you feel about this company?"

"Intimidating."

"I thought so. It was also what I felt when I entered here. I swear, I almost peed on my pants."

"Gods," I cover my eyes with my hand, "I would rather not imagine that."

"Neither do I. It wasn't the best moment of my life. It was the most embarrassing moment ever." He said as he relaxed on the chair, "I never thought I'll get called. I mean, it has been a month since I submitted my resume."

Chapter 3 Sly bloody Marty

Redy walk out looking more dejected than the confident person who walked in minutes earlier, she didn't spare us a glance as she angrily walked out.

"Guess that didn't work out," Fechi comments.

" That must be the case", I nod.

"Fechi Oni," we heard the interviewer call from the office.

Fechi guy smiles nervously, "I guess that's my cue, wish me luck."

" Good luck, fighting!", I shout, and that earned me disgusting glares from the others and a smile from Fechi.

I hope my good luck favours him.

He walked out not more than five minutes later with a sad look.

"I guess that didn't work out as I hoped, but there are still other fishes in the river. I will just bring my hooks out, see you later", he smiles sadly, his dimples nowhere to be found.

I felt a pang of sadness for him, but there was nothing I can do for him and like he said there are more fishes in the sea, all he has to do is throw in his net.

The others were all called one after the other and, like the other two before them, they left dejectedly.

If getting the job is this difficult, why bother trying to recruit?

As far as I know, since this company started, they haven't changed workers and none have resigned.

It came as a shock when I saw their mail.

"I guess it's remaining you and me then, slum boy," Bitchy smiles wickedly, "not to get your panties in a twist, you won't be chosen, stop wasting your time here. Moreover, this company is too immaculate to house a dirty slum-like you."

I ignore her taunts, after all, silence is the best answer given to a fool.

"Zuzana Greta."

Greta, they said?

What a pretentious name for a bitch.

"Say goodbye to your dream job", those were her last words as she turned and sashays into the office, humming a happy tune.

She spent up to an hour there, unlike the others who didn't spend more than five minutes in the office of the judge.

Finally, she came out with a massive grin on her face.

The opposite of the expressions the others wore.

She adjusts her clothes and her hair, "ta-da, I told you the job's for me", she smiles childishly.

Mara won't be caught dead behaving the way she is.

"Bye-bye", she made a shooing motion, I ignore her taunts.

I won't allow her to know how much her words affected me.

"Lys Slyndar", my heart skipped a beat at the call of my name.

Outward I'm composed, but inwardly I am shaking in fright.

"Good luck, you will need it because the position has been occupied by me", she walked towards the elevator with me watching her departure.

I shook my head as I watched the bitch.

Ordinarily, I wouldn't be caught dead referring to a female like this, but she brings out the worst in me.

I took a deep, steady breath before I walked into the office.

The office had three leather upholstery chairs, and the table stacked with files looks like real mahogany.

Mustering courage, there's no use being nervous.

It's either you get the job or you don't there's no two ways about it, I encouraged myself.

I walk towards the man with his back to me and his face looking at the magnificent waterfall enlarged photograph.

"Sit or for you or do you prefer standing?" his silky honeyed voice washed through me, causing goosebumps to materialize on my body without much Ado.

My nerves were on autopilot.

I take a seat, expecting him to turn towards me for the interviewing, but instead, he kept his face straight ahead, not making a move to turn.

If this is how he will behave for the rest of the interview, I rather -

The door to the bathroom opens and a flushed looking * I don't know why his face is always flushed, but that seems to be the case, maybe that's his natural look?* interviewer came out when his eyes landed on the figure casually looking at the picture, his flushed face paled faster than I could have counted to two.

The blood draining from his face.

If vampires are real, I bet they will be jealous of how pale his face is.

If the interviewer isn't the one seating on the chair, then who is?

"Sir", the interviewer starts to say, but the man raised a hand to silence him.

The now paled faced * his face is no more flushed* interviewer gulps in fear.

I almost pitied the man.

I can't pity a man who denied Fechi his dream job and employed Bitchy, "I will take it up from here", the same silky voice speaks his voice was neutral not giving anything away.

"The position has already been filled, there's no..."

The man stands still with his back to us, "I said I will take it up from here" if he's angry, it didn't show in his tune.

"Ok sir", he bows before leaving, but not before giving me a look of pity.

As soon as the door closed behind him, I stand to leave.

Since my interviewer is no longer here, what am I going to do in this office with the strange, mysterious man?

"Sit", was the single command he gave, and I found myself plopping down on the chair.

The mysterious man turned towards me and oh my God, it's Sly bloody Marty in person.

The CEO of the company being in is currently standing opposite me.

I blink to make sure am not dreaming, but he's right there in flesh.

He looks more handsome in person, the camera didn't do him any justice, his ebony black hair tied in a ponytail made his face more appealing. Thick red lips accentuated the curve of his mouth.

His green eyes devoid of any emotion, you would have thought him a stone based on his eyes, his shirt unbuttoned to the third loop making his tight abs visible.

He gracefully sits back on his chair, this time around facing me.

I swallow, my mouth is mysteriously dry.

" Now we're both seated, let's proceed".
