Chapter 1 The Alpha Rejected Me

My mate rejected me in front of the entire pack on the night he became Alpha.

I will never forget the silence that followed.

For eighteen years, I had imagined what finding my mate would feel like.

I imagined warmth.

I imagined safety.

Most of all, I imagined someone finally looking at me and deciding that I was worth keeping.

I never imagined standing beneath hundreds of chandeliers while that same person looked at me as if I were an embarrassment.

The Blood Moon Pack's Ascension Hall glittered around me.

Gold pillars rose toward a ceiling painted with the history of our bloodline. Hundreds of wolves filled the ceremonial hall, dressed in expensive gowns, tailored suits, and the traditional black and silver colors of the pack.

I stood at the edge of it all in a plain black servant's dress.

A silver tray rested against my palms.

I had spent the entire day preparing the ceremony.

I had polished the glasses.

Arranged the tables.

Carried flowers.

Cleaned the marble floors until I could see my reflection in them.

That was my place.

I was Elena Vance.

An orphan.

An Omega.

A servant who had been left on the pack steps as a baby.

No family.

No powerful bloodline.

No one important enough to protect me.

I had learned early that the Blood Moon Pack had a hierarchy, and people like me existed at the bottom of it.

So I kept my head down.

I worked.

I survived.

And secretly, I waited for the day the Moon Goddess would choose someone for me.

Someone who would change everything.

Then Alpha Killian Vance stepped onto the ceremonial platform.

The crowd erupted.

He was everything the pack admired.

Twenty-four years old.

Tall.

Broad-shouldered.

Handsome.

The son of the former Alpha.

Silver eyes that made weaker wolves instinctively lower their gazes.

Tonight, he would become the youngest Alpha in the history of the Blood Moon Pack.

I watched him from across the hall.

Then his eyes found mine.

The tray nearly slipped from my hands.

Something inside my chest exploded.

Heat rushed through my veins.

My knees weakened.

My wolf, the quiet creature I had always been told was too weak to matter, suddenly woke.

Mate.

I stopped breathing.

Killian froze.

His expression changed.

For one beautiful second, we simply stared at each other.

Then I smiled.

It wasn't something I could control.

My entire body felt weightless.

The Moon Goddess had finally answered me.

My mate was the Alpha.

The man who could take me away from the servant quarters.

The man who could give me a home.

I took one cautious step toward him.

"Alpha Killian..."

His expression hardened.

My steps stopped.

A beautiful woman approached him from the side.

Luna Cynthia.

Her golden hair fell over her shoulders, and diamonds glittered against her throat.

Everyone knew why she was standing beside him.

Her father controlled one of the wealthiest neighboring packs.

Their marriage would give Killian the political alliance he needed to strengthen Blood Moon's position.

I looked at her.

Then back at Killian.

Something inside me began to sink.

No.

The Moon Goddess wouldn't do that.

She couldn't.

Killian walked toward me.

The crowd became quieter with every step.

When he stopped in front of me, the bond between us pulled painfully.

He could feel it.

I knew he could.

"You're my mate," I whispered.

His face remained cold.

"I know."

My heart lifted for half a second.

Then he spoke again.

"But that doesn't mean I have to accept you."

The warmth disappeared.

I stared at him.

"What?"

His voice grew louder.

"I, Killian Vance, Alpha of the Blood Moon Pack, reject you, Elena Vance, as my fated mate."

The world stopped.

I couldn't breathe.

Pain tore through my chest so violently that I stumbled backward.

Someone gasped.

Then someone laughed.

My tray fell from my hands.

Glass shattered across the marble.

I barely noticed.

All I could hear was the echo of his words.

I reject you.

My wolf whimpered inside me.

I pressed a hand against my chest.

"Why?"

Killian's eyes moved over my servant's dress.

"You know why."

"No."

My voice broke.

"I don't."

He looked toward Cynthia.

She stood beside him with a small, satisfied smile.

Killian turned back to me.

"I cannot build an empire with an Omega who has nothing to offer."

The words hurt more than the rejection itself.

"I can work," I whispered.

A few people laughed.

"I know you can."

His tone was almost impatient.

"But servants work."

He stepped closer.

"I need a Luna who can stand beside me."

I stared at him.

"I could learn."

His expression didn't change.

"I don't want you."

That was the sentence that broke me.

Not because I had never heard cruelty before.

Because I had spent eighteen years believing my mate would be the one person who wouldn't be cruel to me.

I lowered my head.

Tears blurred the floor.

Killian turned away.

"Leave the territory before sunrise."

My head lifted.

He didn't even look back.

"You will not remain here."

I wanted to scream.

I wanted to ask him how he could reject me so easily.

Instead, I bent down and began picking up the broken glass.

A shard cut my finger.

Blood dripped onto the marble.

Nobody helped.

The music started again.

People began cheering as Killian continued his ascension ceremony.

He was crowned Alpha while I sat on the floor cleaning up the pieces of the life I had imagined.

That was when something inside me changed.

I stopped crying.

I stopped hoping.

I stopped waiting for someone to save me.

If the Alpha didn't want me, then I would leave.

I finished cleaning the glass.

Then I stood.

No one noticed when I walked out.

No one tried to stop me.

By midnight, I had packed everything I owned.

Two dresses.

A pair of worn boots.

A small photograph.

And the silver pendant I had worn since childhood.

I tied them into an old canvas bag.

Then I looked around the tiny room beneath the servant quarters.

This had been my home for eighteen years.

Tonight, it felt like a prison.

I walked toward the door.

Before I could open it, a sharp wave of nausea hit me.

I covered my mouth.

My stomach twisted.

I rushed outside.

I barely made it to the bushes before I collapsed.

When the sickness passed, I sat there breathing hard.

"What's wrong with me?"

I placed a trembling hand against my stomach.

Then I felt it.

A strange flutter.

So faint I almost convinced myself I imagined it.

I closed my eyes.

There.

Again.

My heart began pounding.

Something was happening inside me.

And I had no idea what.

Chapter 2 Two Heartbeats

I barely made it beyond the pack border before my legs gave out.

The forest swallowed me in darkness.

I had walked for hours.

Every step had taken me farther from the only home I had ever known.

Every step had also taken me closer to a life I knew nothing about.

I leaned against a tree and closed my eyes.

My stomach twisted again.

This time, the nausea was worse.

I dropped my bag and sank to the ground.

"Please..."

I didn't know what I was begging for.

Strength.

Mercy.

Anything.

My hand moved instinctively to my stomach.

The strange flutter returned.

Then another.

I frowned.

My heartbeat wasn't the only one.

I waited.

A tiny pulse answered from somewhere deep inside me.

Then another.

My entire body went still.

"No."

I pressed both hands against my abdomen.

My wolf stirred.

Two.

The word echoed through my mind.

I didn't understand.

Then it came again.

Two heartbeats.

My breath caught.

I was pregnant.

The realization made my entire body tremble.

I was pregnant.

With Killian's children.

I looked down at my stomach.

Tears filled my eyes.

For a few seconds, I couldn't think about the rejection.

I couldn't think about Cynthia.

I couldn't think about the pack.

All I could think about were the two tiny lives depending on me.

I laughed through my tears.

"You're really here."

My hand remained over my stomach.

"I don't know what I'm going to do."

A branch snapped behind me.

I spun around.

"Who's there?"

A man stepped between the trees.

I recognized him immediately.

"Dr. Marcus?"

He rushed toward me.

"Elena?"

His eyes widened when he saw my face.

"What happened?"

"I left."

His expression tightened.

"Why?"

I laughed bitterly.

"Because Alpha Killian rejected me."

Marcus went silent.

He had been one of the few people in the pack who had ever treated me like a person.

He crouched beside me.

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

Then another wave of nausea hit.

Marcus watched me carefully.

"When did this start?"

"Tonight."

He frowned.

"Come with me."

"I can't."

"You can barely stand."

"I have to leave the territory."

He looked at me for several seconds.

Then his eyes dropped to my stomach.

"Elena..."

"I think I'm pregnant."

He froze.

"You're certain?"

"No."

I swallowed.

"I felt something."

Marcus immediately became serious.

"Let me examine you."

He checked my pulse, then used the small medical equipment he carried.

His expression changed.

"What?"

He didn't answer.

"Marcus."

He looked at me.

"You're pregnant."

My eyes filled with tears.

"I knew it."

"There are two."

I stared at him.

He nodded slowly.

"Twins."

I covered my mouth.

The word felt enormous.

Twins.

Two children.

Two lives.

Two reasons I couldn't afford to fall apart.

Marcus packed his equipment.

"You cannot go back."

"I know."

"You cannot let Killian find out."

"I know."

His expression was grim.

"Elena, these won't simply be children to him."

I looked at him.

"They'll be heirs."

I understood immediately.

Killian had rejected me because I was an Omega.

But if he knew I carried his children, everything would change.

He could take them.

The pack could claim them.

Cynthia could see them as threats.

And I would have no power to stop any of it.

I hugged my stomach.

"No."

Marcus's expression softened.

"What?"

"He won't have them."

"Then you need to disappear."

I looked at him.

"Can you help me?"

He didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

We moved through the forest until we reached an abandoned medical cabin near the border.

Marcus cleaned the small cut on my hand and gave me food.

I barely ate.

My mind wouldn't stop.

"What happens now?"

"You leave."

"Where?"

"The human capital."

I looked at him.

"Humans won't know who you are."

"And the pack?"

"I'll make sure they believe you're dead."

I stared at him.

"How?"

Marcus looked toward the river.

I understood.

"No."

"It's the only way."

I shook my head.

"Marcus..."

"If Killian believes you crossed the border alive, he'll keep searching."

I looked at my stomach.

He was right.

That night, I became a ghost.

Marcus took my bloodied jacket to the river.

He left it where the current would carry it downstream.

My pendant remained around my neck.

My bag was hidden beneath a loose floorboard.

And by sunrise, the Blood Moon Pack would believe Elena Vance was dead.

I watched the river swallow the jacket.

Tears slipped down my face.

"Goodbye."

I didn't know whether I was saying goodbye to my old life or the girl I had been.

Perhaps both.

Marcus placed a hand on my shoulder.

"You're not dying, Elena."

I looked at him.

"You're starting over."

For the first time that night, I believed him.

By dawn, I was sitting on a bus headed toward the human capital.

My hand rested over my stomach.

Two tiny heartbeats were still there.

Alive.

Mine.

I didn't know what the future held.

But I knew one thing.

Killian Vance had rejected me because he thought I was worthless.

One day, he would learn how wrong he was.

I just didn't know yet what I would become.

Chapter 3 The Girl Who Disappeared

Five years later, I no longer recognized the girl who had boarded that bus.

Sometimes, I wondered if she would recognize me.

The woman standing in the mirror wore a tailored black suit and an expression that revealed almost nothing.

My hair fell over my shoulders in dark waves.

My forest-green eyes were no longer constantly searching for approval.

I had learned how to walk into a room without wondering whether I belonged there.

I had learned how to negotiate.

How to say no.

How to make people listen.

Most importantly, I had learned that survival wasn't enough.

I wanted a life.

A real one.

And I had built it.

"Mommy!"

I turned from the mirror.

A five-year-old boy came running into my bedroom.

Leo crashed into my legs.

I laughed and caught him.

"What happened?"

"Maya took my toy."

Behind him, his twin sister appeared with a plastic crown on her head.

"I didn't take it."

"You did."

"I borrowed it."

"You didn't ask."

"I was going to."

I looked between them.

"Both of you."

They immediately became quiet.

Leo looked at the floor.

Maya suddenly found the ceiling fascinating.

I folded my arms.

"Apologize."

They looked at each other.

"Sorry."

"Sorry."

I smiled.

"Now hug."

They groaned.

But they did it.

I watched them for a moment.

They were the reason I had survived.

Leo had Killian's silver eyes.

Maya had them too.

Sometimes the resemblance frightened me.

Other times, I loved it.

Because no matter what Killian had done, these children had never been responsible for it.

They were mine.

My family.

The family I had built without him.

"Mama?"

I looked at Leo.

"Yes?"

"Are you going somewhere?"

"Business trip."

"Where?"

I hesitated.

"Back home."

Maya's expression changed.

"Where you used to live?"

I nodded.

She looked at me strangely.

"Do you want to go?"

I didn't answer immediately.

"No."

"Then don't."

I smiled sadly.

"If it were that simple, I wouldn't."

My company had been asked to finalize a multimillion-dollar partnership.

The client was one of the largest supernatural investment groups operating in the human capital.

I had tried to avoid it.

Unfortunately, the board had already accepted the contract.

There was another complication.

The company's owner was returning from overseas.

And he wanted to meet me personally.

I hadn't been given his name.

I didn't need it.

The company logo had been enough.

Blood Moon Holdings.

I hadn't seen those words in five years.

I stared at the folder on my desk.

My hands were cold.

Sophie, my assistant, entered.

"The car is ready."

I nodded.

"Thank you."

She hesitated.

"Are you all right?"

"I'm fine."

She smiled.

"You always say that."

"It's usually true."

She laughed softly.

I picked up my bag.

Before leaving, I kissed both children.

"Be good for Aunt Sophie."

Leo hugged me tightly.

"Come back soon."

"I will."

Maya whispered something into my ear.

"What?"

"I don't like that company."

I pulled back.

"Why?"

She shrugged.

"I don't know."

I smiled.

"Then trust your instincts."

I didn't realize how important those words would become.

The gala was being held in neutral territory.

Humans, wolves, and wealthy investors filled the ballroom.

I stepped from the car wearing a black dress that fell elegantly around my body.

Five years ago, I would have been terrified.

Tonight, I walked inside without hesitation.

The ballroom was beautiful.

Crystal chandeliers.

Live music.

Hundreds of guests.

Then I felt it.

A pull.

So faint I almost ignored it.

My wolf stirred.

I stopped.

No.

It couldn't be.

The mate bond had been broken five years ago.

There was nothing left.

At least, that's what I had believed.

Then I heard a voice behind me.

"Elena?"

Every muscle in my body went rigid.

I turned.

Killian.

He looked older.

Harder.

His blond hair was shorter, his shoulders broader, his silver eyes sharper.

For several seconds, he simply stared at me.

I saw recognition slowly replace disbelief.

"You're alive."

I lifted my chin.

"You sound disappointed."

He flinched.

"I thought you were dead."

"You told me to leave."

"I didn't know..."

"You didn't ask."

His face tightened.

"What happened to you?"

I almost laughed.

"What happened to me?"

He stared at the woman standing before him.

The servant dress was gone.

The frightened Omega was gone.

I had become someone he couldn't dismiss with a single word.

"You changed."

"So did you."

His gaze dropped briefly to my hand.

"Are you married?"

"No."

"Children?"

My stomach tightened.

I said nothing.

He studied my face.

Then his eyes moved past me.

And stopped.

Leo and Maya had entered the ballroom with Sophie.

Killian went completely still.

I knew the exact moment he noticed their eyes.

Silver.

Just like his.

His gaze moved from them to me.

Then back again.

His breathing changed.

"Elena."

I stepped in front of the children.

"Don't."

His voice was barely audible.

"How old are they?"

"Five."

He stared at them.

Five.

His face lost color.

"Are they..."

"Don't ask."

"They're mine."

The words came out as a statement.

I looked directly into his eyes.

"No."

His expression hardened.

"Elena."

"They are my children."

"You hid my children from me."

"I protected them from you."

Pain crossed his face.

Before he could answer, a waiter approached with the contract.

"Mr. Vance, the documents are ready."

Killian didn't look away from me.

"Sign them."

I reached for the pen.

My hand shook only once.

Then I signed.

Killian signed after me.

When our fingers accidentally touched...

the mate bond flared.

Power rushed through my body.

I pulled away.

Killian stared at his hand.

Then at me.

His expression was one I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not of me.

Of what he had just felt.

"What was that?"

I didn't know.

But my wolf did.

She was awake.

And for the first time in five years, she wasn't afraid.
