Chapter 1 ALFIE RETURN

CHAPTER 1

ALFIE RETURN

.........

Amelia pushed the door open and walked in, muttering under her breath, rehearsing what she would say to the president.

The door slowly closed behind her. Her hand clipped together as she muttered under her breath.

Her feet halted the moment she looked up to meet the President, the man who had refused to pay her claims any attention.

"Mr. Presiiid..."

The words died in her mouth.

As her eyes locked onto a peer of familiar blue eyes.

She stopped.

The anger she had carried washed down immediately.

"Alfie?" Her eyes moved over him, taking in the office, the desk, the name plate. "You are the president?"

She caught herself, straightened her back, and let her face go still. Her abandoned first Love is now the man she has to call sir and Mr. President.

"If Alfie is the President, why did he refused to pay me?" Her face frowned slightly.

Maybe he was still holding a grudge but this isn't the right way to settle it.

She turned to leave. His voice stopped her before her hand touched the handle.

He was grinning, so hard that Amelia almost asked him what he was grinning for.

Alfie looked at her as if her shock was the funniest thing he'd seen all week.

"Didn't you come to see me? Or did you think it's one of your numerous old boyfriends?"

"You!" The word came out sharp, angrier than she meant it to sound. She stood still, staring at him.

He came around the desk slowly,

He chuckled as if her presence in his office was nothing more than an inconvenience he found entertaining.

"Amelia, you are still bold..." He tilted his head, sarcasm dripping from every word. "You just walked into your president's office without knocking. Or is there any appointment you have with me?"

She had rehearsed an answer somewhere between the manager's office and this door, something about her missing file, the pay she hadn't seen in two months. Standing in front of him, all of it came out tangled.

"You want to know why I'm here?" Her voice cracked, but she pushed through it. "A file went missing from my desk. A file I never touched, never opened, never lost. And because of that, they've frozen my pay for two months."

She paused. "Two months, Alfie. My name is not even on the payment list anymore, like I don't exist in this company."

He said nothing. His silence pushed her anger higher.

"I asked them to check the CCTV. One look, that's all it would take to prove I didn't do this. They wouldn't even give me that. They just decided I was guilty and moved on with their lives, while I'm out here trying to prove" Her hands were shaking. She pressed them together to stop it, but it didn't help. "So yes, I walked in without knocking. Because nobody in this building has bothered to hear me since this started."

Something shifted in his face. Gone as fast as it came.

"Amelia, you seem to have been living well all these years."

It wasn't an answer. It wasn't even close to one. She waited for something, an apology, an explanation, anything. He only watched her, arms folded.

She turned again to leave. This time he didn't stop her with words. He let her walk. As soon as her hand found the door, his voice pierced through to her.

She didn't turn around. She pushed the door open and walked out, past the assistants who stared, past the hallway that suddenly felt too long, until she was outside, trembling, asking herself what she had done to deserve running into Alfie again, in a place like this, at a time like this.

Alfie stood alone in his office long after the door shut behind her.

He had waited for this. Planned for it, even, in the quiet hours when he told himself he was over her. Now that it had happened, nothing about it felt the way he expected.

He swept his arm across the desk, sending the files scattered across it to the floor, and sank into his chair. His jaw worked, but no sound came out at first. When it did, it was low, almost to himself.

"She has been living in peace. But me? Me..." He pressed his palm hard against his chest. "What was I in her eyes? I must have gotten it all wrong. But right now, she didn't act like it was all lies."

He stared at nothing, replaying the last five minutes over in his head, her voice cracking, her hands shaking, the fire in her eyes that hadn't dimmed one bit in all these years.

His fist came down on the desk.

"I will make her life miserable."

The words hung in the empty office long after he said them.

Chapter 2 THE MAN WHO SHE ABANDONED

CHAPTER 2

THE MAN WHO SHE ABANDONED

.......

Alfie sat in his car, watching them as his fist clenched.

"She looks so happy," he muttered.

He reached for his phone and typed a message.

"Find every single piece of information about Amelia Doughty. Little or big, significant or insignificant. I want to know everything about her."

"Bitch!" His hand on the steering wheel turning pink.

Amelia had just cleared her brother's debt and walked out of the school gate in a hurry, unable to notice the car parked ahead.

She was late for her job hunting, quiting was her best decision. With Alfie sudden appearance and his hostility, she didn't want such entanglement again.

She stopped to check her bag, patting it down.

A hand grabbed her.

"Who are...?" She almost screamed, looking up to see Alfie's dark face close to hers.

He pulled her toward his car giving her no room to fight back.

Pushed her against it.

She lost her footing, but he caught her before she fell.

She stepped on his foot and walked past him but pushed. She turned slowly to him her hand clenched by her side.

Alfie stood still, pain climbing up his leg. He didn't move to nurse it. His eyes stayed on her back as she walked away, like she wasn't even worth a second look to him, but she was.

" Why are you doing this?" she whispered tiredly.

He covered the gap between trying to snatch her hand but Amelia was too quick he missed her hand, refusing to let him hold her again.

"You hate me," she said, remembering his words from days before. "So why are you following me around?"

She stepped back and looked him up and down.

Alfie stood frozen. His heart beating faster. "Why do I keep seeking her out like this? He mumbled.

He looked down at the ground, his breath slow.

Seeing him quiet, Amelia turned to leave then she turned back once to see if he was still following her.

He only stood there, saying nothing, his jaw locked, hand balled tight at his side.

He turned and walked back to his car without waiting for an answer. The engine started, and he drove off without looking back.

Amelia stood there until the sound of the car was gone. She took a breath and continued on her way.

Alfie drove straight to his villa, gripping the wheel the whole way.

The moment he stepped through the door, the house went quiet. No one moved. No one wanted his attention.

The way the cushions sat on the couch.

"Who arranged this place, Who?" His voice thundered through the house.

Tugging on his neck tie.

He picked up a flower vase from the table and threw it to the floor. It broke, and the room went still.

He knelt down and began picking up the pieces with his bare hands. A shard cut into his palm. Blood welled up.

The maids nearby whispered to each other and began backing away.

"Why are you all standing there like statues?" he snapped.

Everyone froze at the sight of his bleeding hand.

He stood, looked around at their faces, then turned and walked quickly to his room.

Inside, he opened a drawer beside his bed and took out an old photo. He sat on the edge of the bed and stared at it.

"Why," he said, his voice cracking, "what happened now, no, no."

He pressed the photo to his chest.

"What if she didn't lie? Nothing changes. It was all lies. She still left me."

He sank to the floor, the photo still held against him. Tears fell from his eyes.

"After five years," he said quietly, "why does it still hurt me like this?"

His grip closed around the photo frame until the glass cracked and cut into his palm too.

He looked at the photo again. His younger face stared back, smiling, not knowing what would go wrong.

"She cannot abandon me," he said, low and dry.

He raised the frame as if to smash it, then stopped, his hand shaking in the air. He set it down instead.

By the time he came out, a file sat waiting on his desk. Every piece of information they could find on Amelia.

He traced her name on the folder with his thumb before opening it.

He read page after page, his face growing darker with each one. Then he stopped.

Photos of Ray, and a small boy. Amelia held the child close, the same boy he had seen her walk to school that morning.

"So they are married." He let out a short, humorless laugh. "She used to tell me they were only best friends. How can best friends marry each other and have a child this big, eh?"

The information did nothing to satisfy him. If anything, it left more questions than it answered.

He picked up his phone and called his assistant. The line connected on the first ring.

"Send me Amelia's résumé. And anything else related to her in the company."

He ended the call without waiting for a reply, and one thought sat heavier than the rest: what he still didn't know about her.

Chapter 3 THE OFFER SHE REFUSED

CHAPTER 3

THE OFFER SHE REFUSED

.......

Amelia finally found a place to work.

No time to dully dally, she started right away, glad for the chance.

Encountering Alfie again had almost disoriented her but money mattered more than emotions she hadn't had in a long time.

"His is safe and sound, that one thing I am glad for" she muttered to herself as she wiped the table.

Her boss was kind and easy going, praising everything she did, paying her more than the usual rate for a day's work.

The money was small, but it could feed her and her brother, with a little left over.

"If I work a month, I can pay for his medical bills," she said, stuffing the money into her hand bag.

She went on for her second job. The tàsk wasn't difficult but the boss made it hard for her, but she kept at it, thinking of Elias.

"Why can't you arrange the spoons like the sample?" her second boss snapped, snatching them from her hands to arrange them herself.

"Such a lazy young girl."

The woman eyed her up and down.

Nothing Amelia did pleased her. The woman complaints continued through the week, but as long as the pay came, she could bear it.

Walking home after such a day, her hand placed gently to her waist aiding her movement, for an unknown reason Amelia felt a car following her.

She stopped, looking backward and a car was really following her and the car stopped the moment she did.

Her feet moved before her brain did, turning back again and again, fear growing inside her.

She suddenly hit hard against something solid, her face paled as she looked up

startled, but a strong arm caught her hand and held her steady.

"Raymond?" she breathed in his familiar scent and hugged him tight. "Thank goodness it's you."

Seeing her relief, Ray let her go.

"Are you okay?"

"I'm okay. Nothing happened. I just felt a car was following me."

He looked behind her, but the car was gone.

"You must have imagined it," he said.

"I must have," she agreed, though her heart hadn't slowed down yet.

She knows what she have seen, a car was following her.

"Could it be Alfie?" she shook her head not wanting to think about it.

"You're looking beautiful this morning," he said, kissing her forehead the way he always did when she was tense.

Because of their closeness, Ray's girlfriend had left him weeks ago. When she asked him to come back, he refused.

"I won't date someone who cannot accept my bond with Amelia," he told her.

"They come and go, but you will always be here. Unless you leave me, I won't leave you for anyone."

His words made Amelia cry. Ever since her parents died, Raymond had been her shadow, paying for Elias's medical checkups more times than she could count. Elias called him Uncle Ray, and called her Mummy.

As they stood there holding hands, a man in a parked car took pictures of them and sent every shot to Alfie.

Alfie was in a board meeting when the photos arrived on his phone.

He stared at his phone, his heart tightened.

He slammed his hand on the table, and the room fell silent.

"The meeting is over," he said, standing and walking out.

The directors murmured to each other, Alfie never ended a meeting before the agenda was finished.

No one asked why.

His mind stayed on the photos the whole ride down, Raymond's lips against her forehead.

He drove straight to Elias's school, using the information he had gathered.

The headmistress stood the moment he walked in. He asked question after question, and that was how he learned the truth about the Elias's illness.

Before leaving, he called Alex to donate money to the school. The headmistress was thrilled to have someone of his standing visit.

He went to Amelia's house next, but she wasn't home. The neighbors said she had gone to work.

Since coming back to C City and finding her again, the pain he thought he'd buried had come crashing back.

Every time he thought of the past, his chest tightened.

"Since I have no peace," he said to himself, "she won't have any either. She made this hell. We will be in it together."

He entered his car and drove off, ignoring his own emotions and amount of time he was investing into the past he really couldn't understand why she wanted him dead.

Alfie went to the hospital where Elias was being treated. The doctor explained everything, the illness, the urgency of the bone marrow transplant.

He left with a small, satisfied smile.

He called Alex, his assistant, and told him to send Amelia the job offer again, by email and by text.

Amelia got the message and dismissed it, just like before.

Her phone buzzed again a moment later. She glanced at the screen, expecting Alfie's name.

It was Mrs. Roseline calling from the school.
