CHAPTER 1
Beatrice POV
"Let's get a divorce."
I knew my voice was shaky when I said those words to Louis-my husband. Damn, I even felt disgusted having to call him "husband" after everything I found out he's done to me.
"Sure." Louis stood up from the sofa, pulled a pen from his black suit pocket, signed the divorce papers I handed him, and shoved it back at me. "Let's end this marriage right here."
"Louis."
My eyes were burning. I held back the tears threatening to spill, keeping them inside for my own damn dignity.
"You know, I'm actually thankful you're giving me this," Louis said, raising the divorce papers in the air, shaking them before throwing them down on the table. "At least I didn't start this. You did, and I'm just finishing it."
What did he just say? He didn't start any of this?
"You slept with Kylie, you bastard!"
Louis went silent, just staring at me. But again, it wasn't the kind of stare I used to know. He wasn't the Louis I loved anymore. He was a stranger now. Then he smirked, hands shoved deep in his pockets.
"We're done now. Don't bother Kylie."
"What?" I could barely hold it together. I yanked his arm and shot him a death glare. "You slept with my best friend, cheated behind my back, and now you're defending her? What the hell does Kylie have that I don't, Louis? Am I not better than that bitch?"
Louis just stared at me, then his gaze dropped to our hands. He gently shook my hand off, just a tiny move, but it hurt like hell.
"Beatrice, all this time I've been with you, you couldn't give me a child."
"And Kylie can give you a kid? That's your excuse for cheating? Really, Louis?!"
Louis sighed, turned away, and said, "You can leave the mansion whenever you're done. Say hi to your parents in the village for me. Sorry I couldn't meet them."
I snorted and spat on the floor. "Screw you, Louis!"
Two years. I thought I gave it all-my heart, my life. I really believed Louis was going to be my last love. But I was wrong. He wasn't even close.
"Where we heading, Miss?"
The taxi driver asked as I quickly hopped into his car. He was in his 40s, I saw his ID on the dashboard.
"Moonlight Village, please."
The driver raised an eyebrow. He checked me out in the rearview mirror. I had my suitcases beside me.
"You going there alone? It's pretty far. Should I turn off the meter to make you more comfortable, Miss?"
I scoffed, crossing my arms. "If you think I can't pay the bill, just drop me off here."
The driver awkwardly apologized and started the engine. We were off to Moonlight Village, the place my grandparents chose to retire.
Louis always thought they were my real parents, and I let him believe that. I didn't care if Louis thought I was poor-I believed he'd love me forever, just like he promised in our vows: in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer.
But Louis broke that promise.
"We've arrived at Moonlight Village, Miss," the driver said, pulling up.
I pointed to a house at the end of the street. "You can drop me here."
"Sure, Miss."
True to my word, the driver dropped me off in front of my grandparent's house. I could tell he wasn't comfortable asking for the fare with the way he kept looking down. I handed him a few hundred-dollar bills.
"Wow! This is too much. Thank you so much, Miss."
I smiled as I got out of the cab after he helped with my bags. He was still thanking me as his car pulled away. Guess it was his first time getting a tip like that.
"You just gonna stand in the middle of the road like that, Beatrice?"
That voice caught me off guard. I turned around and smiled when I saw my grandpa, John, grinning and opening his arms wide to welcome me.
"Grandpa!"
"My beautiful granddaughter!" We hugged tight. Oh, I squeezed him so hard. This was the first time I'd seen him in two years since I last visited. "Oh, I can barely breathe, sweetie."
"Grandpa," I muttered, pulling back from the hug. John caressed my cheek. "Louis and I-"
"I already know, Beatrice," he interrupted.
"How did you know?"
"Did you think I'd leave you alone in the city? Not happening!" I never expected my grandpa had this all planned. I smiled. "Let's get inside before the snow starts falling."
"Good idea."
We all sat down at the dining table. Me, John, and my grandma, Sophia. I couldn't believe they already knew Louis and I were divorced. John even said he knew the moment he saw me dragging my two big suitcases into the taxi. He'd secretly hired a bodyguard for me. I felt so lucky they cared about me like that.
"So, what's your plan now?" Sophia asked.
"I don't know, Grandma. I spent most of my time waiting for Louis to come home, hanging out with Kylie sometimes. But now they're dating, and I'm all alone. I've got no idea what to do."
John finished his pie, then sipped his hot chocolate before saying, "You don't need to waste your time like that. Grandpa wants you to run the company."
"The company? You mean the 'Dimitri Group?'"
"Yep."
I raised an eyebrow, looking back and forth between them. "But hasn't Ben been running the company just fine?"
Grandpa and Grandma exchanged glances. Then John began explaining, "Ben's done a great job running the company. He doubled the profits, and we're planning to open a new branch in London. Bennedict will handle that. So, we thought you could take over Bennedict's position in New York."
I was stunned. My mouth dropped open. "I'm gonna be the CEO?"
Sophia patted my shoulder gently. "We know your abilities. You just 'forgot' because you married the wrong guy, Beatrice."
"We plan to announce the new CEO tonight."
I couldn't hold back my shock. "Tonight?!"
CHAPTER 2
Louis leaned in closer to Kylie, her scent still the same as the first time. A mix of flowers and that boldness Louis never saw coming.
Kylie's hands pulled him in, yanking his neck closer. A long moan escaped Kylie's lips as Louis' hips started moving faster, matching the rhythm of the bed underneath them.
"Baby... this, ah, is unbelievable!"
Louis picked up the pace, while Kylie pressed her body against his, letting something down there get warmer and wetter.
Finally, they hit the peak, and Louis rolled over onto his side next to Kylie. His panting breath became the soundtrack to their release that night. It wasn't the first time. But Kylie was still the same. Still knew how to satisfy Louis, and what was his down below.
Kylie slowly rolled over, letting her tired face turn to the side. She propped her head up with her hand before speaking, "Is Beatrice coming back?"
Louis turned his head. His dark eyes looked at Kylie with so much love. The look he used to give his wife, now fully directed at Kylie. "You don't need to worry. I've signed the divorce papers. My lawyer's handling the rest." One of Louis's hands reached up, gently caressing Kylie's sweat-drenched cheek. He smiled softly and looked at her with affection. "We'll be together, Kylie."
"What about your company?"
"Everything's gonna be mine."
"Didn't you say... Beatrice helped build the business?"
Louis snorted, then playfully nudged Kylie's nose with his. "She helped me with the savings she had. But it wasn't much. Compared to the assets I have now, she doesn't mean anything. Don't worry about it. Beatrice and I are divorced. She's just a poor girl. Her parents live in a village, and she won't be able to challenge me with the money she has."
"I heard Beatrice's parents have a farm."
"Should we be thinking about those dirty cows right now, Kylie?"
Kylie smiled wider, feeling relieved. She moved closer, wrapping herself around Louis, hugging him with a grateful look. "Thank you, Louis. I'm so lucky to be with you."
"I'm lucky too, Kylie. I love you."
"I love you too."
After spending the night together, Louis went straight to the bathroom, getting ready to head to work. First Media was a global media company with dozens of branches in big cities and abroad. Louis built it from scratch. Starting with a small article business that slowly grew, making him the leader of the city's most popular TV channel. Investors introduced by Beatrice were attracted to Louis' business, pouring millions of dollars into it for mutual gain.
Each year, Louis's profits kept growing, drawing more attention from investors to fund his media empire. In just two years, Louis owned several local and international TV stations. His business was booming because Beatrice had been involved in the media world before they married. It had become a new empire, making Louis the king. But now, forgetting Beatrice's contribution, Louis stood in front of the mirror, enjoying his success with another woman.
"You leaving now?"
Kylie's hands wrapped around Louis's waist from behind. She tilted her head, resting it on his arm, looking at him with soft eyes.
"I still miss you."
Louis snorted, pulling Kylie's hand and spinning her around, grabbing her beautiful hips intimately. "I'll be back early after my meeting with the CEO of Dimitri Group. My first meeting with their staff went well. I just need to convince their leaders, and First Media will be the most successful media outlet in New York."
That was great news. Kylie smiled, pulling him in tighter. "Hope you make it."
Louis placed a quick kiss on Kylie's lips before heading out for the business meeting.
Louis walked into Dimitri Group with a confident stride. A multinational media company, far older and more successful than First Media. In its fifth year, Dimitri had expanded its reach, adding subsidiaries that loaned capital to the businesses under it. Dimitri Group was way bigger than anyone could imagine.
"Excuse me. I have an appointment with the CEO of Dimitri Group." Louis' voice was met warmly by the receptionist behind the front desk. She was a young woman, about twenty-five. Louis noticed her name tag that said Kitty before she picked up the phone and confirmed that Louis was expected in the meeting room on the third floor. "Thanks for the info."
"You're welcome, Sir."
In the previous meeting, Louis received positive feedback on his presentation. He was confident this one would go well. If Dimitri Group approved his proposal, First Media would get millions of dollars every month for funding and a broader business partnership.
Knock! Knock! Knock!
Louis finally reached the meeting room door. Staring at the glass door, he took a deep breath, slowly exhaling to calm his nerves before knocking. This meeting made him a bit anxious, and when he opened the door, the scene inside left him speechless.
It was nothing like Louis expected. It was far from what he had imagined.
"You? Why... are you here?"
Chapter 3
Author POV.
Louis stepped deeper into the meeting room. Today, he was supposed to meet with the CEO of Dimitri Group, Bennedict Drew Foster. But the person sitting inside wasn't Bennedict. It was Peter Moon, the CEO's personal secretary.
"Aren't I supposed to meet Mr. Foster today?"
Peter stood up, bowed his head politely, and continued, "Mr. Foster went back to New York today, but he had to see his family in Moonlight Village. It was urgent, and he asked me to let you know."
Louis furrowed his brows. "Moonlight Village?"
It sounded familiar, but no matter how hard he tried to recall, he couldn't find a single clue.
"Mr. Foster wants to postpone the meeting until next week. And he asked you to finalize the concept you proposed earlier," Peter continued, his voice firm and authoritative. Holding an iPad in his left hand, he nodded. "That's all I have for you. See you next week, Mr. Armstrong."
Like a robot, Peter turned and walked out, leaving Louis no chance to interrupt. He didn't even give Louis a moment to respond.
At that moment, Louis realized he needed Dimitri Group's approval, and he wasn't in 'making a deal' mode-he was still under the Group's authority. So, whatever they asked, he had to comply.
While Louis was still processing what just happened, Peter walked towards his car in the parking lot. He pressed something on his iPad and dialled his boss, Bennedict.
It only took a few seconds before Bennedict picked up.
"Yeah?"
"I've done what you asked, sir. I'm on my way to the village."
There was a small grunt on the other end of the line, which made Peter a bit nervous. But as Bennedict continued, Peter could finally breathe a sigh of relief. "Good job. Now, pick me and my sister up. Dimitri Group will soon be led by a new queen."
"Understood, sir."
****
Beatrice POV
"Queen? Are you kidding, um?"
I stared at Bennedict, but he just looked the same-stoic and expressionless.
"You're the next CEO. You're obviously the queen of Dad and Mom's company. Isn't that right, Grandma?"
Sophia, busy trimming bamboo plants in a pot, mumbled and nodded.
"You need to be careful, Dear. It's sharp," Jhon said, helping Sophia take care of the plants, looking uncomfortable with Bennedict's gesture.
I could tell Bennedict wanted to say something more private.
And then, he made his decision.
"I'll talk to Beatrice inside," Ben said, standing up from the garden chair and glancing at me, giving me a signal to understand and follow him. I walked behind him, and we headed to a different place. "Should I teach Louis a lesson? I can beat him to death if you want."
I raised both eyebrows and crossed my arms over my chest. "I've signed the divorce papers. We're already divorced. Beating him to death won't make me feel any better."
"You can't be like this, Beatrice. You have to get back at what Louis did to you."
Even though he said it in a flat tone, I could feel my brother's anger. I muttered and walked over to the sofa, sitting down. "Do you think I could be a good CEO for Dimitri Group?"
"Be a good CEO, and show Louis that he'll regret all of this."
I agreed with that, nodding. At least I had to stay positive when Bennedict gave me good advice. He was a good brother, even though we rarely spoke or met over the years.
"I'll pull all the investments I made for Louis. I didn't give them to him; I gave them to you."
"All of it? Aren't you being too harsh on him, Ben?"
Bennedict snorted. "He cheated, ignored you, let you go back to Grandpa and Grandma. Does he even know you're from Dimitri Group?"
I shook my head. "He met Grandpa and Grandma as my parents on the first day I introduced them. And that's still how it is to this day."
"Tch, he doesn't even know that his in-laws aren't his real in-laws. That guy is such a jerk. You should've thrown him in the trash."
"Don't be so harsh on him, Ben. He was with me for ten years."
When the conversation paused, the sound of a car horn caught everyone's attention. Especially mine. Whose car was that?
"That's Peter. My personal secretary. He'll be taking care of you starting today. He's loyal and trustworthy; you can rely on him," Bennedict said, filling me in. "He'll help with your work or personal matters. Don't worry."
"Thanks, Ben."
Suddenly, I felt thankful for my brother's presence, and I hugged Bennedict. I could feel Ben's stiffness slowly melt. He hugged me back, though his gesture was a bit awkward. Ten years ago, when I started dating Louis, my relationship with Bennedict became a bit tense. It seemed like he realized his little sister was growing up, and I knew Bennedict hated that. But today, I wanted to show Bennedict that his little sister was back, and I could see a smile on his face at the end of our conversation.
Bennedict then took me to see Peter, and we said our goodbyes to John and Sophia, who chose to stay in the village to enjoy their old age. Bennedict took me back to the city, to our old house.
It took two hours until we finally arrived at the Foster family mansion. Michael Foster and Anna Drew Hathaway, my parents, had died in a single-car accident, instantly, making Bennedict the CEO to continue their business. Dimitri Group was founded by John and Sophia, then passed down to my parents, Michael and Anna. Now, Bennedict and I would be the ones responsible for this company.
"This house reminds me of Mom," I murmured as my fingers brushed against a painting on the wall. It was a painting Mom made when I was ten. I couldn't hold back the rush of emotions-sadness, nostalgia, and joy-that flooded my body. I knew I was smiling when I saw that painting, but my eyes wouldn't cooperate. Tears fell slowly. "It feels like I haven't been home in so long, Ben."
Bennedict sighed and turned his face. Conversations about our parents were always a sensitive topic.
"I have to go back to London today. There's work I can't leave. You'll be fine here alone, right?"
I turned around, trying to look strong, and finally said, "Of course. I can handle this, Ben. Don't worry."
Bennedict hugged me once more before leaving with another driver from our mansion. He left Peter to wait for me outside the house, asking him to wait until I came to find him. As I took over as CEO, Bennedict trusted Peter to handle it.
After leaving the painting full of memories with Mom, I decided to enter my old room. It had been so long since I lived with Louis. I hadn't visited this house in years. The scent of the room was still the same, but this time, it was filled with emptiness and longing. I took a deep breath, then stepped deeper inside. I walked toward the large wardrobe in the corner, hoping to find some childhood clothes for a bit of nostalgia.
But when I opened the wardrobe doors, I was completely shocked and fell to the floor. My eyes widened in disbelief when I saw someone inside. "Ah! W-who... are you?!"
