My husband, Liam Sterling, once held me like a fragile, precious thing.
Three years into our marriage, his touch turned to ice.
He led Chloe Miller, the interior designer he now obsessed over, into our home.
Today was her wedding day, a cruel game to force his hand.
On my knees in a rust-scented warehouse, Liam' s gentle fingers stroked my neck.
He smiled, but glacial eyes demanded Chloe' s wedding address.
I pleaded, "I don' t know where her wedding is, Liam. She' s setting me up. She' s lying."
He sneered, "Chloe was right, as usual. You' re just jealous of her."
Then he brought out my brother, Ben, bound and gagged.
Five snarling Dobermans lunged, their barks hungry.
Liam whispered, his lips brushing my cheek, "If you don' t give me the wedding location, your brother will have a little 'playdate' with the Dobermans."
His words were a cold knife, cutting deeper than any physical pain.
A dog' s claw dug into Ben' s shoulder, tearing skin, drawing blood.
His muffled cry tore through me.
I begged, "Please, let my brother go! Take it out on me instead, Liam!"
His face darkened, grip tightening on my chin.
"Tell me, where is Chloe getting married?"
He had forgotten everything we were.
The man who swore to protect me now found cruel amusement in my agony.
This wasn' t the first sign.
Subtle perfumes, a whispered name in passion, then seeing him kiss her in the rain.
He' d even told me, casually, "I' m keeping her. She entertains me. Men in our circle all do this."
I tracked down Chloe' s abusive ex, hoping to end this nightmare.
But she was smarter.
She turned it into a scheme that branded me as the villain, telling Liam I paid her ex to marry her.
And he believed her.
When his assistant burst in with Chloe' s wedding location, Liam' s rage shifted.
He ordered, "Help Mrs. Sterling back to her room."
And as they dragged me away, I heard Ben' s whimpers, saw the Dobermans tear at him.
Liam' s indifferent words echoed, "Honey, you know I can' t bear to punish you, so your brother will have to take the punishment for you."
My world went black.
Something snapped inside me.
When I awoke in the hospital, Ben was alive, but mangled.
"I can' t let you get hurt for me anymore. I have to leave him!" I cried.
Ben sighed, "The world is vast, Ava, but the Sterling family is vastest."
But I had a plan now, a secret escape clause in our marriage agreement.
In ten days, Liam Sterling and I would never see each other again.
The warehouse smelled of rust and damp earth. It was a cold, hollow space, but someone had turned it into a bizarre art installation. Strange sculptures twisted in the shadows, their shapes barely visible in the dim light. I was on my knees on the cold concrete floor.
Liam Sterling, my husband, stood over me. His fingers were gentle as they stroked my neck, but his touch felt like ice. Three years of marriage, and I had never felt such a chill from him.
"Honey, where is Chloe' s wedding address?" he asked, his voice a soft murmur. He smiled, but it was a smile that didn' t reach his eyes. Those eyes, once filled with a fire that burned only for me, were now glacial. "She only sent the location to you. Where is it?"
Chloe Miller. The beautiful young interior designer he had become obsessed with. Today was her wedding day, a wedding she was using to push Liam, to make him choose. It was working. He was provoked, and his anger was a quiet, terrifying thing.
I shook my head, my hair sticking to my tear-streaked face. "I don' t know where her wedding is, Liam. She' s setting me up. She' s lying."
A sneer twisted his perfect lips. "Chloe was right, as usual. You' re just jealous of her. So jealous you' d force her to marry a man she doesn' t love."
"She' s lying!" The words ripped from my throat, raw and desperate.
Liam' s smile vanished. The sudden absence of it was more frightening than the smile itself. "Darling, don' t test my patience. You know the consequences."
As if on cue, the large metal doors of the warehouse groaned open. Two of Liam' s security guards pushed a large, metal crate into the room. It scraped against the concrete, the sound echoing in the vast space. Then, they dragged in my brother, Ben.
"Ben!" I screamed, scrambling to get up, but Liam' s hand on my shoulder held me down.
Ben was bound, a thick gag covering his mouth. His eyes were wide with terror. He had cancer, he was weak. What was Liam doing?
The guards pulled a red cloth off the crate. Inside, five Dobermans snarled and lunged against their leashes, their teeth bared. Their barks were sharp, hungry sounds that bounced off the metal walls.
Liam smiled faintly. He pulled me to my feet and wrapped his arms around me from behind, his grip like steel. He grabbed my chin, forcing me to look at the crate, at my brother.
"Darling," he whispered, his lips brushing my cheek. The kiss was cold. "If you don' t give me the wedding location, your brother will have a little 'playdate' with the Dobermans. Who do you think will win, the dogs or your brother?"
One of the dogs shoved its paw through the bars of the crate. Its claws dug into Ben' s shoulder, tearing through his shirt. Blood splattered, a dark stain on the fabric. Ben cried out, his voice muffled by the gag.
My blood ran cold. "Please, let my brother go!" I begged, twisting in his arms. "Take it out on me instead! Please, Liam!"
His face darkened, and his grip on my chin tightened, forcing my head still. "Tell me, where is Chloe getting married?"
He had forgotten. He had forgotten everything. The way he used to look at me, the way he swore he would protect me from the world. Now, his heart belonged to Chloe. He was just as infatuated with her as he had once been with me.
I had seen the signs. The first time, it was a hint of perfume on his collar, a floral scent that wasn' t mine. I asked him about it, my voice small.
"Darling, it must have been my assistant. Don' t worry about it," he' d said, kissing my forehead.
The second time was worse. We were in bed, and in a moment of passion, he cried out her name. "Chloe." The word hung in the air between us. I felt like I had been struck by lightning. I knew rich men had admirers, but Liam was different. He was always so detached, almost like a monk with everyone but me. His pursuit of me had been so intense, so all-consuming. How could he fall for someone else so easily?
The third time, there was no denying it. It was raining hard. I was waiting for him, holding an umbrella. I saw his luxury car pull up, and a young, beautiful woman ran from it. It was Chloe. Liam chased after her, pinning her against the car door. He kissed her hard, a desperate, hungry kiss, until she was breathless.
"Chloe, be with me," I heard him say, his voice rough. "I' ll give you anything you want."
My world tilted. The umbrella slipped from my hand, clattering onto the wet pavement. I trembled, taking a step back as I watched him lift a struggling Chloe into the car. The car door slammed shut. A few moments later, the car began to rock.
I collapsed in the rain, my knees hitting the asphalt. Tears mixed with the rain on my face. I had believed him. I had believed that not all wealthy men were disloyal, that he was different. But I had seen it with my own eyes. My heart shattered.
When he came back to the mansion that night, I showed him the photos I had taken on my phone. He didn' t even try to deny it.
"Yes, I' m keeping her," he said, his tone casual. "She' s good with flowers and plants, and she keeps me entertained. Men in our circle all do this, it' s just a bit of fun. Don' t worry, honey, you' re the only one I truly love."
But he started staying out all night. He stopped answering my calls, ignoring my messages. After three months of this torture, he disappeared completely. The only way I saw him was through Chloe Miller' s social media live streams. He took her to see the Northern Lights. He used a thousand drones to spell out "My Dearest Chloe" in the night sky. He commissioned a pearl tiara for her that cost a hundred million dollars. He even took her to the Sterling family estate, showing everyone his new beloved "golden cage bird."
I was broken. I tried everything to win him back. I even tracked down Chloe' s abusive ex-fiancé from her hometown, hoping he would take her away, get her out of our lives. But Chloe was smarter than that. She turned the tables. She told Liam she was leaving him, getting married to her ex, but it was all a ploy to force Liam' s hand. She left him a note before she disappeared: "The Sterling family wife paid for my wedding."
It was a complete lie. But Liam believed her. Chloe wouldn' t tell him the wedding address, of course. That was part of her game.
And now, here we were.
Liam ordered the guards to open the crate. "Honey, you' re being very naughty."
The five Dobermans crept out, their movements slow and menacing. They stared at Ben, who was still wrapped in a red cloth, drool dripping from their bared fangs.
I shook my head, terror making my whole body shake. "Liam, please, don' t hurt my brother..."
"Darling," Liam said slowly, his voice dangerously calm. "Then let' s trade Chloe for your brother. Otherwise, this warehouse will become a fighting pit, and your brother will be buried here."
But I didn' t know. I truly didn' t know the location. I fell to my knees again, my hands clasped together, begging him. "Liam, please, just this once, believe me! Let Ben go!"
He knelt in front of me, his expression softening. He tenderly wiped a tear from my cheek with his thumb. "Honey, you look beautiful when you cry," he sighed. "But you can' t do bad things, can you? Naughty children must be punished."
He stood up and raised his hand. It was a signal to the guards. A signal to throw my brother to the dogs.
Just as his finger started to drop, Liam' s assistant burst into the warehouse, panting.
"Mr. Sterling! We found Ms. Miller! Her wedding is in the countryside!"
Liam' s expression changed in an instant. Surprise, then relief, then a burning excitement lit up his eyes. He turned and looked at the video playing on his assistant' s phone. It was Chloe, in a wedding dress.
"Arrange a private jet. I' m going to crash that wedding now," Liam commanded. He turned and looked down at me, still kneeling on the floor. "Help Mrs. Sterling back to her room," he ordered in a deep voice.
As two guards pulled me to my feet, I heard my brother' s whimpers. The other guards had already thrown him into the pack of Dobermans. The dogs were on him, tearing at him.
"Ben!" I screamed, fighting against the guards holding me.
Liam turned his back on the scene, his voice low and indifferent. "Honey, you know I can' t bear to punish you, so your brother will have to take the punishment for you."
Ben' s blood stained the concrete floor. His miserable cries echoed in the warehouse. "Ben, someone save my brother!" I cried out, kneeling and begging the guards, but they just stood there, their faces like stone.
Watching my brother' s mangled body, hearing his agony, something inside me snapped. The world went black. I collapsed.
When I woke up, the first thing I smelled was antiseptic. I was in a hospital bed. I sat up, my head pounding.
Ben was sitting in a chair in front of me. He was covered in bandages, his face bruised and swollen, but he was alive.
Tears streamed down my face. I threw my arms around him, holding him tight. "Ben, I' m so sorry. I can' t let you get hurt for me anymore. He treats me like this... I have to leave him!"
Ben sighed, a helpless, weary sound. He patted my back. "The world is vast, Ava, but the Sterling family is vastest. Where can we run?"
I pulled back, my tears still falling, but my jaw was set. I gritted my teeth. "He signed an agreement when we got married. If he ever broke my heart, I could leave him and choose any country to live in. And he would be banned from ever entering that country. It was his escape clause for me."
Once I signed my part of that agreement, it would take effect in ten days.
Now, I was going to activate it. In ten days, Liam Sterling and I would never see each other again.
After leaving the hospital, I went back to the mansion alone. The house was silent, a vast, empty monument to a love that was now dead. I moved like a ghost through the halls, afraid to make a sound. I went straight to our bedroom and quietly began to pack.
I only took the essentials: a few changes of clothes, my bank cards, and the agreement. I found it in the safe, right where we had put it three years ago. With a trembling hand, I spread the document on the bed and quickly signed my name. The ink was a dark, final mark on the paper. The ten-day countdown had begun.
Now I just needed my ID and my passport. I was searching through my jewelry box when my phone chimed on the nightstand. My heart lurched. I looked down at the screen. It was a text from Liam.
"Honey, don' t wander off. I want to see you when I get home."
I shoved my passport into my bag and zipped it shut, my hands moving faster. I had to get out.
A moment later, I heard the crunch of tires on the gravel driveway. He was back. I ran to the window and peeked through the curtains. Liam got out of the driver' s side of his Rolls-Royce. He walked around to the passenger side and opened the door. He smiled, a gentle, loving smile, as he helped Chloe Miller out of the car. She was still wearing her wedding gown.
He had crashed the wedding. He had won. Chloe linked her arm through his, her head held high, a triumphant queen returning to her castle.
My heart ached with a familiar, dull pain.
Footsteps were coming down the hall, growing closer. I turned from the window, my body feeling heavy and slow.
The bedroom door swung open. Liam stood there, his shirt collar unbuttoned, looking relaxed and satisfied. His eyes scanned the room and immediately locked onto the corner of my suitcase peeking out from behind the curtain.
He frowned. "What are you doing?"
I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms. "My brother is in the hospital," I said, my voice barely a whisper. "I' m packing some things for him to change into."
Liam shrugged, accepting the lie easily. He walked into the room, still holding Chloe' s hand. He didn' t let her go.
"You tried to force Chloe to marry someone, and now she' s lost her job at the flower shop," he said, his tone matter-of-fact. "From today on, her new job is to come to the mansion and teach you flower arranging."
My head snapped up. I stared at him, my eyes wide with shock. This was his solution? To bring his mistress into our home, to make me see her every day?
Chloe looked at me, her eyes welling up with tears. It was a masterful performance. "Mrs. Sterling, I never wanted to ruin your relationship with Mr. Sterling," she said, her voice trembling. "So why did you force me to marry my ex-boyfriend, the one who used to abuse me? You even hired thugs to threaten me. It' s just too much."
I stared at her, stunned by the audacity of her lies. A hint of defiance flashed in her eyes. I understood now. All this time, she had been feeding Liam a steady diet of slander and lies about me.
A cold laugh escaped my lips. "I never threatened you. You know that perfectly well."
Chloe' s eyes immediately reddened further. She lifted her chin proudly and turned to Liam. "Mr. Sterling, it seems I won' t get the respect I deserve from Mrs. Sterling. I know I don' t come from a wealthy family like yours, but I' m still a person. I can' t endure unfair treatment anymore."
She made a show of turning to leave. Liam grabbed her wrist, stopping her. He lifted his eyes, and his gaze on me was cold.
"Ava, I told you, if you do something wrong, you have to be punished," he said. "If I hadn' t crashed that wedding today, Chloe' s life would have been ruined."
His words made me tremble. The old Liam, the one who loved me, would have stood by me unconditionally. When his own mother had called me a "poor barista," Liam had publicly raged at her, telling her, "No one is allowed to upset the woman I love. Ava is my dearest, and if you dare hurt her again, don' t blame me for turning my back on you."
He had held me in his hands like a precious, fragile thing. Now, his treasure was Chloe Miller. And for Chloe' s sake, he was going to make me pay.
Liam snapped his fingers. Two security guards wheeled in a large, freestanding bathtub. It was filled to the brim with ice.
"Chloe fell into cold water trying to escape the wedding," Liam said, his voice flat. "As compensation, you' ll take off your clothes and melt all the ice with your body heat."
