"Thank you," Emily Baker said to the taxi driver who had dropped her at her apartment and helped her with her bags. She arrived home in Everton on a particularly chilly April morning. She had been on a work trip with her friend Doris in another city where it had been a little hot. She wore just a hoodie and ripped jeans and shivered.
Emily had no idea it was going to be this chilly, as the weather forecast said nothing about it.
May, her neighbour was waiting at the doorstep of her small apartment, with a dog in her hands.
May was at least sixty, but it didn't matter to her as she considered Emily a friend and a very good neighbour. "Oh, you are back! I was expecting you to be here in an hour, I missed you," May said passionately, dropping the dog in her hand to give Emily a warm hug.
Emily, who knew how lonely May must have felt as she didn't have anyone around to keep her company, broke the hug and said warmly, "I've missed you too, may. I see Betty here misses me too". The little dog wagged her tail at Emily and she picked the dog up the excited dog, the dog didn't wait to shower love on Emily and she smiled in delight.
"Where did you find her? I thought she was lost," Emily said, trying to stop the dog from licking her, but the dog was too overjoyed, so Emily gave up at last. Betty had somehow gotten lost in her lease and wandered off about a week ago. They had looked for her everywhere, but Emily had to go and trip due to work. She was glad may found Betty.
"A good samaritan brought her back when he saw her name tag, he had come across one of my flyers" May answered.
Emily sighed. "Betty always finds her way back no matter how far she wanders".
Her phone rang at that moment and a frown crept onto Emily's face immediately when she saw the caller's ID. It was her boss John. What did he want from her now?
"Let me leave you to get settled" May hurried away before Emily could say anything. Emily sighed, she was exhausted.
She unlocked the door, with her phone still ringing, and she dragged her bags in.
She had no choice but to answer the call when her phone wouldn't stop ringing. She just wanted to sleep on the weekend before Monday. She knew picking up the call would mean more work. John was selfish and never satisfied, she wasn't a freaking robot.
"You finally answered! I really need you right now, Emily," her boss said passionately on the other end of the line.
Emily rolled her eyes when she heard his words, that goes her weekend.
"It's the weekend, John, and I just got.." he didn't even let her finish before interrupting.
"I know, I know," he interrupted her.
"I promise you won't regret it, you will get paid for the day".
Emily took the phone away from her ear and sighed deeply, he knew she couldn't reject the offer now that she knew she was getting paid. Darn it!
"What is the job about?" she enquired, still trying to sound uninterested.
"It's an interpreter work. I just got it early this morning as it is an emergency. One of their Japanese interpreters got into an accident. They need someone urgently. They have investors coming in from Japan today," He said hurriedly.
"What company?" Emily probed further, to see if the job was going to be worth her time or not.
"Wilson's corporation, this is big Emily! it's a one in a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I wouldn't call you if it wasn't important"
"Willson corporation?, Can't you ask someone else to do it, John? I'm still jet lagged" Emily declined as soon as she heard the company's name. It sounded like a big deal, and that meant they would expect her to be more than perfect. Of course, she was good, maybe... but they would have seen better, she was sure of it.
John clicked his tongue, which annoyed Emily. "Emily, this can be an opportunity for us. You may get promoted. It's the big break, please Emily".
Emily dropped her suitcase on her bed. Maybe she should give it a shot. She knew John wouldn't stop asking till she finally gave in. "Okay John, when and where" Emily finally agreed after John's persuasion.
"You are a lifesaver Emily. I will never forget this. Meet me on 21st Street on the second lane in thirty minutes. We have less than two hours to be there," John instructed.
Emily's hands stopped as she was trying to take off her hoodie. "What!, You have got to be joking, John, thirty minutes! I need to shower and change and take a quick nap and eat"
"Emily, that isn't important right now. I promise to make it up to you okay, see you in thirty," he responded. John ended the call before Emily could protest further.
"Argh," Emily growled in annoyance as she threw her phone on the bed. She took off her hoodie quickly and took a quick shower.....
Thirty minutes later, Emily arrived at the location where she met John, who hurriedly told her to get in the car. He drove the car faster than ever so they wouldn't show up late.
"Slow down, John, or you will get us both killed!" Emily protested as she felt her heart palpitating in her chest. This was definitely a bad idea
"We can't be late, or we will give a bad first impression. Rich people tend to get irritable easily," John replied, going even faster...
An hour and thirty minutes later, Emily stood in the lobby of one of the most beautiful hotels she had ever been in her entire life. This part of the city was where she never even considered going, as it was known to be the place for the rich and those of High status in the society. Her boss, John, looked more nervous than she was.
"Relax John, and you are meant to be the boss," she sneered, which earned her a glare from John.
After waiting for a few minutes, they were ushered into a conference room, where the secretary of the chairman of Wilson's Corporation, Ethan Wilson, was waiting.
The secretary Olivia Steel was at least Forty Five, her hair was tied in a neat bun, and she wore a tailored dark brown suit. Emily was happy that she dressed a little corporate or she would have looked out of place.
"We need only Miss Baker, sir," the secretary implied for John to leave with a straight face.
John glanced at Emily and mouthed the word "good job". "What!". She was getting more nervous now.
John was about to protest, but couldn't when he saw the look on Olivia Steele's face.
"I will be waiting outside," John said with a forced smile. Emily's eyes grew wide slightly when she heard his words.
He mouthed the word "fighting!" To Emily before he walked out of the room, leaving Emily on her own.
The secretary turned and looked at Emily from head to toe, like, which made her uncomfortable. Olivia had a look of disapproval on her face, which made Emily detest her idea of clothing.
As Olivia was about to comment on Emily's choice, the door sprang open.
"Mr Wilson" Olivia stood up immediately and went for the door.
Emily turned around to see who he was and Behold her eyes fell on the most intriguing and stunning man she had ever laid her eyes on. Oh my!
Ethan Wilson was much more handsome than what John, her boss, had described. No! He was completely different from what John had described. Maybe John had seen the wrong person.
Emily was expecting to see an old man in his Fifties, a with protruding bell and a short height.
He was anything but that. In his late tw, entries she assumed, He wasn't only a fine specimen but He was dressed elegantly in a designer-tailored black suit. He also had mesmerizing sky-blue eyes, but they had intensity in them. Just a look from him could intimidate someone. And just to confirm her assumption she was a little intimidated by him.
His hair was dark and shiny, it wasn't long or short and the angles of his face were sculpted finely. To put it simply he was stunning. She couldn't help but stare at him in awe, who wouldn't. Emily quickly regained her composure, she wouldn't be intimidated by this man!.
However, the look in his eyes immediately made Emily aware that he didn't like her a bit, she wasn't what he had expected to see. What was wrong with her? Was she not of his social status?.
Their eyes met for a second and Emily looked down immediately, his eyes looked almost lifeless. She failed, he intimidated her at last, who was she kidding.
"Olivia, what is this --" Came a deep icy voice, which showed disapproval about Emily. He didn't even care that Emily was standing in front of him, he blatantly ignored her presence. How rude!.
"I'm sorry Mr Wilson" Oliva quickly broke in purposely, "We couldn't find anyone else in time as it is the weekend, Mr Harrison assured me that Miss Baker here is very competent," She said with confidence in her voice. Emily didn't know if she should be happy about the compliment or if was it?.
The silence that followed was filled with tension as Ethan Wilson Locked gazes with Emily, he then studied her from head to toe, which only added to Emily's already nervous state. The way he looked at her made her feel like a student who was being assessed.
Ethan looked at Emily who stood behind Olivia with a grim look on his face. He glanced at his watch and looked back up at Olivia Steele. "Better than nothing" he muttered.
"Do something about her clothes, and be ready in twenty minutes?" He said coldly before walking out of the door.
Olivia nodded and turned to Emily "Follow me" she said simply, before walking out of the room, Emily followed her trail quickly till they arrived at a suite in the hotel. Emily couldn't help but gasp in awe at the room, it was At least 5 times bigger than her apartment. Was this going to be removed from her paycheck?.
"Get changed in 2 minutes' ' Olivia said coldly as she handed Emily some clothes. "Do I really have to change, I can make do with---" Emily wanted to protest, but Olivia was quick to interrupt her. "Yes, right now you don't look..." Olivia's eyes trailed her from head to toe which made Emily self-aware. She opened her mouth to say something more but the woman walked away before she could. "Rude!" Emily muttered and shut the room door loudly.
Emily came out of the room dressed in a corporate-tailored Navy green suit, it was exactly her size, Thankfully. Olivia looked satisfied with what she picked out and nodded in satisfaction "Perfect."
Olivia glanced at her watch "We need to leave now" She said before walking out of the suite. Emily followed behind her quickly, this would be the last time she was ever taking this kind of job.
They arrived back at the conference room where four other men were now, Ethan Wilson still with a stoic look on his face. Emily wondered if he ever smiled or if his face was always like that. Well it was none of her business
Olivia gestured for her to sit close To Ethan. Ethan still didn't look at Emily even when she sat beside him, Emily wanted to scoff. Why was he acting all high and mighty?
The meeting started and Emily interpreted everything more than fluently without making a single mistake. Surprising Ethan. He was expecting her to make a flaw but Emily put in more effort than she usually did just proving him wrong. Olivia was glad Mr Harrison's recommendations were good, she didn't want to get in trouble with her boss.
After the meeting, They scheduled another meeting for the next day in the evening, before they shook hands with the investor and they left.
Ethan glanced at Emily once before walking out of the conference room too. Olivia followed Ethan out and Emily rolled her eyes at his back, she came out of the room to find her boss John pacing around. He looked much more nervous than she was herself.
He waltzed quickly toward her when she came out of the conference room. She could see sweat had formed on his head.
"How was it?" He probed, curiosity etched in his eyes.
"It was okay, I didn't make any mistakes thankfully," Emily said with her head up high. She wasn't an interpreter for nothing.
"Good job, Emily I owe you one" He thanked Emily with a smile on his face. he could finally breathe out in relief.
"You may become his personal interpreter. Do you know what that means for us!" John said excitedly, clapping both his hands together. This was a lifetime opportunity he had been waiting for his whole life, it was finally here.
"what! Johnson, this wasn't our agreement, this is just a one-time job. I'm not interested" She quickly cleared it up, so John wouldn't persuade her about something like this in the future.
"Emily, I'm sure you are just tired. you will fully understand what I mean after a night's rest don't worry" John chuckled, which made Emily roll her eyes at him...
Olivia Steele walked to where Emily and John stood talking and passed information from her boss across to them.
"Make sure Miss Baker is Available tomorrow. The chairman is satisfied with her work. She needs to be here till tomorrow so we can finalize the deal" She said, shocking both Emily and John.
.
"What!" John said in disbelief. He was overwhelmed with happiness when he heard Olivia's words, it was finally his big break.
"Of course, ma'am, thank you" He immediately agreed before Emily could say anything.
Olivia Steele nodded and walked away. Emily immediately glared at John "This wasn't the plan!" She immediately protested, she wanted to go home and sleep. Was that so hard to do?.
"I can't stay John, you need to find someone else, this isn't what we discussed" Emily protested further.
"Emily, I promise to pay you double for your services, please do it for the company. We really need this, if word gets out about this we may get more investors" John pleaded, trying to persuade Emily. He held both her hands in his and looked at her with so much pleading in his eyes.
Emily sighed deeply, her heart couldn't allow her to say no, that was just the type of person she was.
"Okay fine!. This is the last time I'm doing something like this, John, okay?" She agreed and John beamed.
"Thank you so much Emily" John held her hands pulling her into a hug.
Emily broke the hug immediately as she was aware that her boss was married.
"Just call me when you are done and e, and I will come pick you up" John left soon after and Emily was escorted back to the suite room.
She slumped on a king-sized bed, as she was exhausted from her flight and work. Soon she fell asleep but was awakened less than two hours later by a knock on the door.
She got up sluggishly and opened the door which revealed Olivia Steelee. What did she want now?.
"I'm sorry Miss Wilson but the meeting has been moved to Mr Wilson's house. We need to leave in 20 minutes"
"What!" Emily exclaimed in utter bewilderment. What was happening?.
"What!" Emily exclaimed in surprise.
"This wasn't part of what we talked about and--" Emily started but was interrupted by Olivia.
"I've talked to your boss, and he sees no problem with it,"
"But–"
"The ride is almost here. See you in fifteen minutes." Olivia walked away, leaving Emily in bewilderment.
"Argh!" Emil groaned, shutting the door loudly.
She called up John immediately, and he picked up after the third ring.
"What is this I'm hearing John. This wasn't part of what we talked about. I can't go to his house! I want out of this now!"
. "This isn't part of the job, John. you said it was for half a day, why do I have to go to his house!"
"Just go along with it, Emily. They are paying for overtime. This is an opportunity for us. you can meet more people and get more clients if possible. please, Emily, I'm begging you. Don't ruin this, " John pleaded and persuaded. His small company was on the verge of bankruptcy, and he didn't care if he had to be selfish to save it. And also this could be an opportunity for Emily too.
"I'm never taking a job like this again John, this is the last time," Emily agreed, and John had never been so thankful. "Thank you, Emily. I promise to repay you for this. thank you! thank you!" He said excitedly. "Yeah." A deep sigh escaped Emily's mouth as she ended the call. when would she learn to say no to people? she glanced at the time and saw she had only 10 minutes left to be ready. She had learned during the short time that Olivia was sort of a perfectionist. Emily just wanted to go home, take a warm bath, and lie down.
Exactly ten minutes later, a knock was heard on Emily's door. She opened it to reveal Olivia, she was glancing at her watch. "The car is ready," Olivia said and walked away without waiting for Emily. Emily rolled her eyes and went after her.
At least the driver was much more polite, and Emily responded to his greeting readily. "This is what you will be doing. The investors will arrive at five, so you just have to wait till you are called," Olivia explained, and Emily nodded. She wanted to get this over with and go home. She still needed to go see her grandmother the next day, the way things were going her plan may have to change.
Emily turned towards the window and watched as the car moved further away from her city to a place she rarely visited. The place where the rich people of higher status lived. She wasn't poor in any way, and at the same time, she wasn't rich. she had just enough to cater for her and her grandmother. when she was younger, she used to wonder why some people were better off than others, she thought it was unfair that some had more than enough and could spend their money lavishly as they liked. Growing up, she had to live the hard way and now she was almost done with college and was finally able to say she had enough and wasn't poor anymore.
Olivia stared at the young lady who was lost in thoughts. a small smile appeared on her face when she was reminded of herself at that age. She wished she could go back in time and live her life to the fullest instead of working her ass off to get to where she was now. But it was worth it.
They drove for about an hour more, and Emily could no longer see any houses around. Where exactly was his house. As the car began to drive into the Wilson estate, Emily's jaw almost dropped. she was expecting to see a huge mansion, but not this huge. no! This wasn't a mansion. It was castle-like. No wonder he was so arrogant. He saw her as a peasant, and she saw herself as one too now. Emily didn't need anyone to tell her that she didn't belong here. She couldn't wait to tell her mom everything. The car came to a halt at the front of the mansion, and Emily came out with Olivia. She couldn't help but gape at the house. she was awestruck, to be honest. if she wandered into a house like this, she would definitely get lost.
"This house belonged to Mr Wilson's parent, but he doesn't live here. he only comes here on business, " Olivia said to Emily even though she didn't need to know that piece of information. Emily nodded.
Olivia rang the doorbell, and five seconds later, the door was opened by an older-looking man who looked stoic and patrician as hell. He was dressed in what looked like a uniform. "Good evening, Maxwell." Olivia greeted the man, and he nodded in acknowledgement. "Mr Wilson is waiting in his study."
Emily could see the man's eyes scanning her from head to toe. Why did he make her feel more nervous than she already was? if Emily was gaping at the outside of the house now, she was awestruck by the interior of the house. The white ceiling was so high with a chandelier in the middle. most of the house was either white or golden, and everything looked almost antique like a Victorian-era house. She trailed behind Olivia slowly while her eyes scanned the whole hallways. There was a big portrait on the wall, just as the wall was in the middle of the stairs. There was a man and woman with a little boy in their middle. it didn't take Emily long to realise that the little boy was Mr Wilson with his Parents, she assumed he was around seven or eight years old. He had the brightest smile on his face, while his parents had a serious look on, this was in contrast to their son's contagious smile. It was strange to see him have such a bright smile while having a stoic expression now.
They arrived at his study a minute later. Olivia knocked slightly at the door. Before she pushed, it opened slowly. Ethan was seated behind a huge mahogany study table with a file and mackbook in his front. He looked completely engrossed in work and didn't raise his head up to look at them till Olivia cleared her throat. "Mr Wilson, she is here," Olivia said, tilting her head to look at Emily, who looked nervous...
