Genesis
The sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows through the dense canopy of the forest. Leaves crunched underfoot as I sprinted through the underbrush, my breath coming in short, ragged gasps. The tall pines loomed overhead, their dark silhouettes merging into an almost impenetrable wall. Every few steps, branches clawed at my arms and face, but I pressed on, driven by a sense of urgency that outweighed the pain.
A cool evening breeze whispered through the trees, carrying with it the scent of damp earth and pine needles. The rhythmic pounding of my heart echoed in my ears, a steady drumbeat that matched the rhythm of my footsteps. My eyes darted from side to side, scanning for any signs of movement, any indication that I was being followed.
The forest was alive with sounds: the distant hoot of an owl, the rustle of small creatures in the underbrush, the creak of tree branches swaying in the wind. But beneath it all was an eerie stillness, a silence that seemed to grow heavier with each passing moment. I couldn't shake the feeling that something, or someone, was out there, just beyond the edge of my vision.
My foot caught on a root, and I stumbled, barely managing to regain my balance. I couldn't afford to fall, not now. Not when I was so close. Up ahead, a faint light flickered through the trees, a beacon of hope in the encroaching darkness. It was the clearing I had been searching for, the place where I could finally stop running and make my stand.
With a final burst of energy, I pushed myself harder, my legs burning with the effort. As I broke through the last line of trees and into the clearing, I was met with a sight that made my heart skip a beat. There, in the center of the open space, stood an ancient stone altar, its surface covered in strange, glowing runes.
I slowed to a walk, my eyes wide with a mixture of fear and awe. I had heard the legends, the stories passed down through generations, but I had never truly believed them. Now, standing before the altar, I couldn't deny the truth. I reached out a trembling hand, tracing the patterns of the runes, feeling the power that thrummed beneath my fingertips.
I had found it. The heart of the forest. The place where my destiny awaited.
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
The beeping sound of my alarm brought me back to reality.
"This dream again?". I thought to myself. I've been having this same dream for weeks ever since I took up the post of the head archaeologist. It was probably a coincidence something. No one really understands dreams. I jumped out of bed and dashed to the bathroom. I was already running late for work. Apparently, my alarm was beeping for some time before I finally woke up.
I dressed up really quickly and before I knew it, I was already on the 8am bus to work. My name is Stacie Phillips, and I reside in a quaint, centuries-old cottage on the outskirts of the lake District in Northern England. My days are often spent poring over ancient manuscripts analyzing artifacts and piecing together stories of the past. But lately, it's been quiet. It feels like we've discovered and uncovered everything there was to. I still miss the thrill of field work, but for now, I'm stuck in my office working on documents and finances or whatever. Things that I never had interest in.
I walked the into to Company and proceeded to the elevator to get on with my boring day of document sorting when Elijah stopped me.
"Good morning boss!"
"I told you not to call me that."
"Sorry boss. Anyways, I have news."
"I don't think there's anything you want to say that I haven't heard yesterday"
"Trust me, this is different."
"Alright. Shoot!"
"So you know that we sent an excavation team to Transylvania". Elijah started "They returned yesterday by around 4pm. You know, after you closed for the day."
"So what?" I retorted "How's that any different? We send teams every month to different places and they never return with anything worth looking into."
"On the contrary, they found something different." Elijah said with a smirk on his face. "Very different". His excitement was now very visible on his face. I know that is not a guarantee that they found something that would interest me because everything gets him excited. He's 21 but he acts 17. Always smiling, jovial and optimistic. He is honestly the only person left in this company that is still full of energy and enthusiasm.
"Alright, lay it on me." I grew rather impatient. "No more beating around the bush."
"Caleb-the head of the team we sent met with me yesterday." Elijah started "To tell me the latest on the mission. As I am, you know- your PA."
"You're not my personal assistant" I was quick to point out.
"For now..." Elijah smirked like a little kid who was about to do something mischievous "They found the bones of an unknown animal. It was carnivorous, most likely a primate. It had short canines like that of a Cheetah and long claws like that of a wolf. An animal that I have never seen before in my life."
"Wow. So we could be on the verge of a new animal discovery?" I was now as excited as Elijah. "You're right Elijah. This is great news". I was about leaving when I heard Elijah's voice again.
"That's not all" Elijah's smirk had returned. "There were traces of human DNA found all over the bones. There was also on arrow found lodged within the creatures body. I thought it was a mere arrow used by the locals in the vicinity but judging from the exterior, I knew it was something different. We were about to remove the arrow for further analysis but decided to inform you first."
"Now I'm intrigued." I smiled, eager to uncover more about the mystery unfolding before me. "Where was this body found?"
"The bones?" Elijah asked "It was found in Hoia Baciu forest". "Hoia Baciu forest?" I stammered "The one the large clearing in the middle?".
"Yeah..." Elijah said, obviously surprised that I knew that about the forest. "Have you been there before?"
"No" I was quick to say. I wasn't ready to start explaining an adventure I had in my dream to him because he'll definitely make a big deal out of him and try to interpret the dream or something "Never mind. Just wait for me in the lab. I'll be there in 20. I can't afford to miss this chance to discover a new animal."
Elijah chuckled after he walked towards his desk. An image from my dream flashed in my mind. I saw the forest. The exact forest that I've been having dreams of for weeks is the forest that this creature came from. Could it be that this dream has been leading me to something? Something new, maybe even something supernatural...
Nah... probably not. Damn I watch way too many movies.
Heist
Descending the narrow, dimly lit staircase. I couldn't shake the feeling of anticipation coursing through me. The lab, buried deep beneath the facility, always had an aura of mystery, but today it seemed particularly charged with promise. Each step echoed off the cold, concrete walls, amplifying the silence and my excitement.
I clutched my note book tighter, my fingers brushing against the cool metal of the rail. The new creature they found was unlike anything we'd ever encountered-a true enigma, defying classification. Though it was dead, the prospect of studying it's remains sent a thrill through me. What secrets lay waiting in the depths below ?
As I reached the bottom, the heavy door loomed ahead, a gateway to revelation. Taking a deep breath, I pushed it open, and the sterile smell of antiseptic and faint hum of machinery greeted me. The lab was a contrast to the eerie staircase- a pristine world of white coats, bright lights, and advanced technology. My company had a bit of every thing. It had an archeology department, of I was the head of, a science laboratory department – The place where we ran tests on all the things we found, a machinery department-the place where we created our tech and things like that. My company was one of a kind. I don't actually own the company, I'm just the head of archeology department, the heartbeat of the company, so I was pretty much in charge.
I approached the containment area, my heart racing with excitement. The creature's enclosure, shrouded in shadows, hinted at its unusual form. This was it– the moment of discovery, the chance to unravel the mysteries of a new life form. With a final steadying breath, I stepped forward, eager to begin the tests and unlock the secrets hidden within the lifeless body before me
"I don't know why have to wait for Miss Stacie. She has no business in the lab." A Similar voice spoke. Even if I was in a coma, I'd always recognize that voice. It was none other than Mr. Matthews. Renowned in the scientific Community, he was a legend- a man whose name synonymous with ground breaking research and unparalleled expertise. Mr. Matthews had knack for uncovering the extraordinary, his keen eye and relentless curiosity pushing the boundaries of what we knew to be possible. His work had earned his accolades and respect nationwide. So basically, he was good at what he does.
"Because Miss the body Stacie's team discovered the body".
"Speak of the devil. So my lord, can start examining the body now?" Mr. Matthew said this sentence with so much sarcasm that it annoyed me but was I going to show my annoyance and accept defeat? Absolutely not!
"Sure", I started "But I must be informed of everything going on. I hate being left in the dark".
"Sure, whatever." Mr. Matthews then opened the door and proceeded into the containment facility, his casual demeanor belying the significance of our task.
The containment facility was a marvel of modern science. The walls, reinforced with layers of steel and tempered glass, ensured that even the most dangerous specimens could be studied safely. The air was cool and sterile, kept at a constant temperature to preserve the integrity of the specimens.
Rows of containment units lined the walls, each housing a different subject of study. The units were equipped with advanced monitoring Systems, providing real-time data on everything from temperature and humidity to the slightest movements. In the center of the room stood a large examination table, surrounded by an array of high tech instruments and equipment. Microscopes, scanners, and a plethora of other devices were neatly arranged, ready to be employed in the analysis of the creature.
Mr. Matthews moved with practiced ease, his hands deftly activating various machines and preparing the workspace. He glanced back at me, a glint of excitement in his eyes that mirrored my own feelings. "Let's get started," he said, his voice filled with the same anticipation that thrummed through my veins.
Mr. Matthew was a tall and imposing figure, around 6 feet and 4 inches, with broad shoulders that hinted at a lifetime of hard work. His Salt-and-pepper hair was neatly combed, contrasting with his piercing blue eyes that seemed to see right through you. Deep laugh lines etched his weathered face, suggesting a man who had seen much of the world and wasn't smile through it's hardships. His strong jaw and slightly crooked nose gave him a rugged, yet approachable appearance. Dressed in a tailored suit, he carried himself with an air of quick confidence, making him both respected and admired by those who knew him. Well, all except me. He was too proud and full of himself. So that basically turned me off and this was pretty much what started our rivalry. It isn't really much of rivalry as he's miles ahead of me but who cares?
Mr. Matthew was running tests, Checking the machine's for abnormality. Or whatever. I'm not too conversant with lab science so I have no idea about what he's doing. He took out a piece of the creature and looked at it through a microscope. I saw him assemble his team. They were conversing just a few steps from where my ears could eavesdrop. After the discussion with his team, he immediately said that we should all leave. He felt that the creature was dangerous so he locked up his lab and put his security agents all over the place.
"Can he really do that?" I asked Elijah "It is our finding actually?" "Yeah he can," Elijah started "Our job is to find the things while his is to examine and find out the useful applications. We were not even supposed to be there. I guess he was just being generous."
"So much security for a dead creature."
"Yeah, it's pretty suspicious." Elijah started "Don't you want to know why he Locked the place up?"
"Hell yeah!"
"Then let's go in".
"No we can't."
"Come on. You Can't tell me you don't want to touch it."
"I do but since he locked it up it must be really dangerous."
"Or maybe he wants to keep the discovery to himself."
"We can't be sure."
"We can't be sure because we haven't gone in".
"Even if I'm on board, how do we even get in."
"I'm glad you asked." Elijah grinned from ear to ear. "So there's an air vent in your office that cut across the lab. I can use the blue prints as a compass. We'll get in and out without anyone noticing. Even the guards are not allowed in the lab."
"What if we get caught?" I asked. "He'll expect someone to try to get in."
"He won't." Elijah started. "There's only one vent that cut across the lab in this whole company and it's yours. Believe it or not, the only person that can get in is you and he won't expect you to try to break in 'cos you're a bit of a nerd, Too upright to attempt a heist like that".
"I find that very offensive"
"Sorry boss."
"But you have a point though."
"You're down?"
"I'm down. We just have to see this creature up close." I started "We'll meet again in my office by 8."
The night was a tapestry of silence. Its stillness only broken by the occasional whisper of the wind through the trees. The moon hung low in the sky, casting a soft, silver glow over the landscape, while stars dotted the heavens like scattered diamonds. Shadows stretched long and deep, painting the world in shades of midnight blue and black. The air was cool, carrying the faint scent of damp earth and distant pine. In the quiet, the subtle sounds of nocturnal life could be heard- a rustling in the underbrush, the distant call of an owl, the short ripple of a stream. It was a night that felt timeless, wrapped in a serene and mysterious calm.
I entered the office through the back door and saw Elijah waiting at the door of my office. Elijah Stood tall at 6'2, his presence marked by a shock of vivid red hair that seemed to glow in the moonlight. His brown eyes, always twinkling with mischief, hinted at his jovial nature. Known for his sharp wit and infectious laughter, Elijah's humor was a constant source of delight for those around him, making every moment in his company feel brighter.
"Sup boss."
"Don't call me that." I proceeded to open the door and before I knew it, we were in.
My office was a blend of modern design and personal touches. The large window behind my desk flooded the with natural light, offering a stunning view of the city skyline. Sleek, minimalist furniture in muted tones gave the space a professional look, while the bookshelves lined with an eclectic mix of novels and trinkets added sense of warmth and personality. A cozy reading nook with a plush armchair in the corner invited moments of quiet reflection amidst the hustle and bustle of the workday. The subtle hum of the air conditioning and the faint scent of fresh coffee completed the ambiance, making it a perfect blend of productivity and Comfort.
Elijah climbed my table and gestured to me to use his hand as a boost to get to the vent on the ceiling directly above my table. He cupped his hands together and I put my feet on them he lifted me up until my hands could reach the vent cover. I opened it and went inside. He jumped and was able to get inside himself. He was taller than me with a good amount of inches. I was just 5'6 and considering that I was already 27 years old, it was clear that I had reached my final height.
Elijah turned on his phone's flashlight and started using the air vents' blue prints as a guide to the lab. After crawling for some time, Elijah stopped and I immediately knew we were finally directly above the lab. He removed the grille and jumped down with it to minimize noise. He dropped the grille and spread his arms wide, reassuring me that he'll Catch me if I jumped. I had second thoughts but was not planning to remain in the vents and watch him uncover my discovery so I jumped. He caught me and held me in the way those men in Indian movies held their girlfriends after singing and dancing. I stared into his mesmerizing brown eyes which complemented his soft silky red hair. My hands were on his shoulder sizing his enormous biceps. I knew he went to gym but had never felt him this close. Damn, he was hot but am I going to tell him that or view him as anything other than my younger brother? Absolutely not.
It felt like he was holding me for same time but in reality it was just roughly 10 seconds. He dropped me and I proceeded to locate the creature's pod. I found it in less than a minute. We took the bones out and started examining it.
"Yo, it's that arrow I wanted to exam Elijah said with excitement would you do the honor of taking it art?" "Sure." I said, then held the arrow with
Both hand's before talking it out. Elijah to the arrow and started going on and on about the arrow being ancient and full of unknown technology or something, I wasn't really paying attention. I was just staring at the bones which weren't just bones anymore. Flesh was growing and covering the bones. I couldn't believe my eyes. It was as if that arrow was the only thing that was stopping this creature from regenerating.
"Elijah! Elijah look!"
"What is... Oh my God!" Elijah was shocked. "That thing is coming back to life!"
"I can see that!" I shouted back. "What should we do?!"
"You're asking me?!" Elijah shouted. "You're the boss! I should be asking you."
Please don't hurt me." The creature, now fully regenerated, whimpered in fear, speaking out for the first time.
Incognito
The creature was in the figure of a man, but his features were strikingly different. He stood tall, around six feet, with a muscular build that exuded both power and grace. His skin had a subtle, dusky tone, and his eyes were a piercing, ice-blue that seemed to glow with an inner light. His hair, thick and raven-black, framed a face that was both rugged and handsome, with high cheekbones and a strong jawline.
His hands, though human in shape, were tipped with sharp, retractable claws, and his movements were fluid and predatory. Despite his fearsome appearance, there was an undeniable allure to him, a magnetism that drew the eye and held it. His clothing, simple and well-fitted, highlighted his physique without concealing his lupine nature.
Every inch of him exuded an air of danger and mystery, yet his expression, in that moment, was one of vulnerability. The creature whimpered in fear, his usually confident demeanor replaced by a haunting sense of dread.
"Hurt you?" Elijah asked. "We should be the one begging you not to harm us."
"I'm not the one holding the sharp, dangerous looking arrow, am I?" The creature pointed to the arrow in Elijah's hands. Suddenly, everywhere started beeping red, our noise had alerted the security so they were putting the whole place on lockdown
"Oh Shit" I started panicking "How do we get out of here, we have to find a way out of have. I could lose my job for this. Elijah why the fuck did you make me come here?!"
"Just relax. Panicking never solves anything." Elijah said, trying to calm me down. "There should be another way out of this place." "You want to get out of this place?" The creature asked. "Why didn't you just say so?" The creature kicked the wall and it broke, exposing a big hole in the place that there was supposed to be a wall. The creature lifted me off the ground and held me by the waist.
"I would have helped carry you across too..." The creature said to Elijah "But you're holding a weapon. So good luck." The creature smiled with one cheek and hopped out through the hole. The hole wasn't a far distance away from the ground so I'm certain Elijah would take the jump, and I was right, He jumped and was soon with us.
I moved a bit away from the creature, my fear of losing my job made me momentarily forget that I was standing before a creature that just kicked open a concrete wall.
"Who are you?" I asked
"The man who just saved your life" He said winking at me. "You're welcome by the way." "Let me rephrase that." I said again. "What are you?" "What do you mean?" He asked "I'm normal just like the rest of you."
"Normal?" I asked. "You just emerged from bones and you're calling that normal? Humans can't do that."
"You're a human?" The creature asked. "Shit, I must be really far from home then. What year is it please?"
"2024"
"You're certain it's not 1725?"
"Yeah I'm sure".
"You're telling me I've been gone for 2000 years?!"
"..."
"It means we must've lost the war. Since I died and all."
"I'm lost right now." Elijah was the one to speak this time. "What's going on? What war are you talking about? What are you?"
"Could we go to a place more private?" The man asked. "I know I shouldn't be trusting humans but since I'm going to need your help, I might just have to make an exception."
Sure." I answered him and took him to my house. Maybe that was not so wise after all. He was an extremely strong creature and partially. Immortal. He couldn't kill us both in an instant if he wanted to but I was not really in a clear frame of mind so I moved on impulse.
We sat seated in my living room, surrounded by the familiar warmth of well- loved furniture. The walls, painted a soft shade of cream, were adorned with framed abstract paintings. A large, overstuffed couch dominated one wall, it's deep blue fabric worn but inviting with a patchwork quilt draped over the back. Two matching armchairs flanked a coffee table cluttered with magazines, a couple of books, and an empty teacup.
"Anyway," He Started "My name is Claud and I'm a werewolf. Up till today, I hadn't seen humans, just heard about them in stories told by my mom. I'm pretty much Immortal, only a few things can actually hurt me and possibly kill me. That arrow for instance is one of them. It killed me but the moment you took it out of me, it stopped suppressing my powers and I was able to regenerate all the organs and blood I had lost. I just fear that I might've returned too late. Before I died, there was a clash of clans going on. A war between the mountain wolves and the forest wolves, all fighting for supremacy. We- the mountain wolves are generally stronger and faster although we were largely outnumbered by the forest wolves, It didn't deter us because one of us can easily take down five to seven forest wolves. But something went wrong, the humans interfered. They learnt of the existence of wolves somehow and came to kill us all to reclaim their planet or whatever. They were using the one weapon that could actually kill us- wolfsbane."
I was really intrigued. His story felt like a movie. It was so exciting.
"The humans came and started attacking everyone." Claud continued. "They didn't know who was who so they pretty much killed as many wolves as they could and I guess I was one of those killed. I have been gone for some time so I don't know how things work now. That's why I need your help. I need to find out if my mom or any member of my clan survived so that we can be reunited. Please, you have to help me."
He looked at me with wide, pleading eyes, the kind that a child might use when begging for an extra cookie before dinner. His lower lip jutted out slightly, quivering just enough to emphasize his desperation. Despite his adult frame and the faint stubble on his chin, the expression was disarmingly childlike, almost comically out of place. His eyebrows arched upwards in a perfect imitation of innocence, creating an overall look that was impossible to resist.
"Damn, fine." I finally gave in. "I'll help you. I'll need some information to work with though. Do you remember the name of any member of your clan?"
"Yes my mom." Claud smiled "Tara wolf"
"Your Surname is wolf? Like because you're a werewolf?" Elijah Started laughing uncontrollably until I looked at him with a stern gaze. "Fine... fine. I'll be quiet."
I brought out my laptop and looked her up. I found her almost immediately. She was the CEO of Verdant innovations, a leading company in sustainable agricultural technology. Verdant Innovations developed cutting-edge solutions to enhance crop yields while preserving natural resources. They also dealt with herbs and stuff like that. She was filthy rich but that wasn't too surprising though. If you were alive for 2000 years and you're still broke, it'd be better you just take a wolfsbane and stab yourself in the heart because you're a very stupid person.
"That's her! That's her!" Claud was smiling with glee. "My mom. What magic is this? How did you put my mom inside that big glowing screen? Mom! Are you okay?"
"No... No... No." I said trying to explain to him. "Your mom is not here, she's in Manchester, England at 15 Tib Street, Northern quarter. This thing you're seeing is just a picture of her. You know, when you draw something."
"Ok" Claud said " I understand. Let's go meet her then."
"It's late. I have to sleep." I said "I know werewolves howl at the moon and are awake at night and stuff like but we humans need at least seven hours of sleep. We'll go there tomorrow, don't worry."
"Speaking of time," Elijah said, he's been awfully quiet for some time now. Quite strange for a chatter box like him. I have to start heading home now. It's late"
"Alright cool. I'll see you tomorrow" I said
To Elijah before turning to Claud. "Do you have anywhere to stay for the night?"
"Well, I've been dead for 2000 years," He said. "I'm Pretty sure my home mountain has been colonised already."
How could I have asked someone who was dead for 2000+ years if he had Somewhere to stay? That was stupid. How would he have some where to stay after being gone for 2000 years. Wait, if he had no where to stay and he's in my house currently, does that mean he'll have to spend the night alone with me in my house? No... No...No. This Can't happen.
"Elijah! Elijah!" I dashed towards the door and opened it to get Elijah to take Claud with him but Elijah was long gone. So I guess this means that this werewolf man was going to be in my house with me this night.
"He's not in range anymore. I guess you'll be Spending the night here. Make yourself comfortable, you'll have to spend the night here on the Couch."
"Alright that's cool" Claud said "I used to sleep on an actual rock so this is a massive upgrade. It's so soft and colourful. I love it!" Claud hugged the couch smiling. It was really funny. I guess since he died in the 1700's all these advancements in technology came after his time so they are all still very strange to him. I went inside my room and locked the door- just in case. I fell asleep quickly because I was really tired. It had been a very long day.
