Chapter 1 Full Moon Arrival

The city glittered below like a constellation trapped in glass. Ava Sinclair adjusted the strap of her evening gown and inhaled the cool night air, letting it settle her nerves. She had attended countless galas, but tonight felt different. The moon hung heavy in the sky, casting silver light over the terrace, and her skin prickled with a strange awareness.

Scanning the crowd, she noticed familiar faces and strangers mingling effortlessly. Still, a tension hummed beneath the laughter and clinking glasses. Tonight, she had a mission: stay composed, keep her secrets buried, survive another evening in the glittering world she had inherited.

Then she saw him.

Tall, impossibly confident, radiating power that drew the eye before it even reached the rest of him. Adrian Blackwood. Billionaire. Untouchable. Dangerous. His presence tugged at something deep inside her - curiosity, caution, something she couldn't name.

A shiver ran down Ava's spine. His eyes caught the moonlight, a glint that suggested he was hiding more than wealth. She forced herself to focus, blaming chandeliers or reflections in the windows.

Her phone buzzed. Another reminder that her past never truly stayed buried. She shoved the fear aside, lifting her chin. Tonight, she would play the part of the poised, untouchable heiress.

She moved across the terrace, heels clicking softly against marble. The night carried a sharp, almost wild scent that made her senses hum. A shadow flitted along the edge of the building, quick as a heartbeat. Her stomach twisted.

Before she could react, a hand brushed her arm.

"Enjoying the view?"

The voice was smooth, deliberate. Her head snapped up. Adrian Blackwood leaned against the railing, unreadable yet magnetic. The city blurred behind them, leaving only the glow of the full moon.

"I didn't expect to see you here," he said, eyes narrowing slightly, as if he could read her thoughts.

"Neither did I," she whispered.

A wind stirred, carrying a faint, eerie sound - a low, haunting howl that sent a chill through her. She stepped back instinctively, but Adrian's presence kept her rooted.

"Do you hear that?" she asked.

He followed her gaze, expression tight. "Relax," he said, but the edge in his tone suggested he had noticed too. "Some things are better left unexplained... for now."

Her pulse quickened. Something told her tonight was only the beginning.

A wolf's howl ripped through the night, sharp and primal. Ava's heart leapt into her throat.

And in that instant, under the full moon, she realized: nothing - not her past, not her secrets, not even her heart - would ever be safe again.

Chapter 2 The First Encounter

Ava couldn't stop thinking about the shadow on the terrace, the strange chill that ran down her spine, and the wolf's haunting howl that had sliced through the gala. Every time she glanced over her shoulder, she felt eyes on her, though the terrace was crowded with laughing guests.

She adjusted her gown and tried to steady her racing heart. The gala was supposed to be just another networking event, but tonight, nothing felt ordinary. She took a cautious step toward the refreshments table, hoping to gather her thoughts.

Then she felt it - a presence close enough to make the air around her feel heavier.

"You're hard to find," a low, smooth voice murmured.

Ava turned sharply. Adrian Blackwood stood nearby, his dark eyes fixed on her, unreadable but intense. Her pulse quickened, though she tried to act indifferent.

"I... I just needed a moment," she said, forcing her voice to stay steady.

He studied her carefully, the faintest smile tugging at his lips. "A moment from what?"

She hesitated. How much could she reveal? "From... the crowd," she said finally.

Adrian nodded, as if that explained everything. "I see." There was a pause, and then his gaze drifted toward the far side of the terrace, where the moonlight barely touched the shadows. "Some things are easier to notice when you look closely," he said, cryptic but not threatening.

Ava followed his eyes. For a moment, she thought she saw movement - a shadow slipping along the balcony edge. She blinked. Nothing.

Adrian's gaze met hers again. "Do you feel it?"

"Feel what?" she asked, heart pounding.

"The night... something in the air," he said softly. "Not everyone here is what they seem.

Ava's throat went dry. She wanted to ask him what he meant, but the words caught. Instead, she nodded slowly, pretending to understand.

A sudden breeze stirred, brushing against her arm, carrying a faint, wild scent that made her skin tingle. Goosebumps rose. Her memory of the wolf's howl from just moments ago flashed in her mind. The hairs on the back of her neck stood on end.

Adrian leaned closer, the warmth of his presence making her pulse race. "Stay alert," he murmured, voice low, almost a whisper meant only for her. "The night has... surprises."

Before she could respond, a soft, deliberate sound echoed from the far edge of the terrace - a faint click, like a door moving. She froze, her breath catching.

Adrian's eyes followed the sound, sharp and precise. "Exactly what I meant," he said, his tone calm but serious.

Ava swallowed, a mix of fear and fascination twisting inside her. Every glance, every shadow, every subtle movement hinted at a danger she could barely understand. And yet, something about Adrian drew her closer, despite the warning in his words, despite the chill in the air.

The night stretched around them, the city lights fading into a blur. One thing was certain: nothing about this evening - or him - would ever be ordinary again.

Chapter 3 Secrets in the Moonlight

The music swelled as guests drifted back inside the ballroom, leaving the terrace quieter than before. Ava followed the movement reluctantly, her mind still tangled in the strange tension that clung to the night.

The gala lights shimmered across crystal chandeliers, casting warm gold across polished floors. Normally, this was her element. Conversation, business, charm. Control.

Tonight, she felt anything but in control.

She reached for a glass of champagne from a passing tray, mostly to steady her hands. The faint tremble annoyed her. She wasn't easily shaken. Her life had taught her how to maintain composure no matter the situation.

Yet Adrian Blackwood unsettled her in ways she didn't understand.

As if summoned by the thought, his reflection appeared beside hers in the mirrored wall across the ballroom.

"You left the terrace quickly," he said, his voice smooth and calm.

Ava turned, forcing her expression into polite neutrality. "The air inside is warmer."

"Is that the only reason?" he asked.

His gaze held hers longer than comfort allowed. There was something searching in it, something almost predatory beneath the polished billionaire exterior.

"I don't like being watched," she replied carefully.

A faint smile tugged at his lips. "Then tonight must be difficult for you."

Her stomach tightened. "What does that mean?"

Instead of answering, Adrian glanced across the ballroom toward a cluster of guests near the exit corridor. His expression hardened for a split second before smoothing again.

"Crowds hide many things," he said quietly. "Secrets. Intentions. Danger."

Ava followed his gaze but saw only guests laughing, clinking glasses, enjoying another flawless high-society evening.

Still, the uneasy feeling returned.

"Do you always speak in riddles?" she asked.

"Only when the truth would sound unbelievable."

The honesty in his tone surprised her. Before she could respond, a server brushed past them too quickly, nearly knocking into Ava. She stepped back, catching herself against Adrian's arm. The contact sent warmth racing through her chest, sharp and unexpected.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then Adrian's jaw tightened slightly as he looked toward the corridor again.

"Stay near the main hall," he said suddenly.

Ava blinked. "You're giving me instructions now?"

"I'm giving you advice."

His tone had changed. Firmer. Protective. It stirred equal parts irritation and curiosity inside her.

"And if I don't follow it?" she challenged.

His gaze softened, but the intensity remained. "Then I might have to find you again."

The words lingered between them, charged with something deeper than warning. Ava felt heat rise to her cheeks and immediately hated the reaction.

Before she could reply, a faint crash echoed from somewhere beyond the ballroom. It was subtle. Glass, maybe. Most guests didn't notice, their laughter drowning it out.

Adrian noticed.

His posture shifted almost imperceptibly, alert, focused. Ava followed his gaze as two staff members hurried toward the corridor, whispering urgently.

"That sounded like an accident," she said, though she wasn't convinced.

"Perhaps," Adrian replied.

But he didn't look convinced either.

A sudden chill slid down Ava's spine. The same prickling awareness from the terrace returned stronger this time, like unseen eyes settling on her shoulders.

She turned slowly toward the corridor.

For a split second, she thought she saw someone standing just beyond the doorway. Tall. Still. Watching.

Then the figure stepped backward into darkness.

Her breath caught.

"Did you see that?" she whispered.

Adrian's attention snapped toward her immediately. "See what?"

"Someone was there."

He studied the corridor, his expression sharpening, calculating. The music inside the ballroom swelled again, cheerful and oblivious, but the tension between them tightened.

"Stay here," he said quietly.

He stepped toward the corridor before she could protest. Ava watched him disappear briefly into the dim hallway, swallowed by shadow and silence.

Seconds stretched unbearably long.

When Adrian returned, his expression was carefully composed again, but something in his eyes had darkened.

"There's nothing there," he said.

Ava searched his face. He was lying. Not openly. Not obviously. But something about his tone felt rehearsed.

"Are you sure?" she asked.

"Yes."

The single word carried finality, but not reassurance.

Across the ballroom, guests continued dancing, unaware that the air had shifted, grown heavier, charged with something unseen.

Adrian stepped closer again, lowering his voice.

"You should leave soon."

The suggestion surprised her. "Why?"

He hesitated, as if choosing words carefully. "Because tonight is becoming... unpredictable."

Ava studied him, weighing instinct against curiosity. Every sensible part of her told her to walk away, to return to safety, to forget the strange pull of the night.

Instead, she found herself asking, "Will you be here if I stay?"

For the first time, uncertainty flickered across Adrian's expression.

"Yes," he said quietly.

But something in his voice made her wonder whether that promise was meant to comfort her... or warn her.

Across the room, the corridor lights flickered once.

Then again.

And Ava realized with a sinking certainty that whatever had been watching her earlier had not left the building.

It was waiting.
