Samantha Skylar Wright
Ever since I was a young girl I have dreamed of meeting my mate, falling in love, having a few kids, and dying old together. And still to this day those dreams are still intact. Many people call me naïve because of it. But what's wrong with wanting to be loved? What's wrong with wanting to be in love? There's nothing wrong with love, just heart break.
Today is the first day of the Mating Ball. The Mating Ball is a three day ball where boys and girls come to meet their mates. The rules are that if you meet your mate on the first day you have to wait until the last day to meet them or see them at all outside of the ball. The second rule is that there is zero completion of the mating process during the ball or until the last day is over. There is one more rule, but I forgot it.
My mother is very excited for me to be able to attend the ball this year. Since as soon as you turn seventeen you are eligible to meet your mate. My father on the other hand isn't as pleased as he could be. I'm his baby girl and he's very overprotective of me. My brother attended his two years ago but we haven't seen him since. We believe that he found his mate and went to spend forever with her. Nice, isn't it?
I'll be going to the ball with my best friend, Genelia Mary Fosters, she's really pretty and tough. Just like me she wants to meet her mate, she's just unsure if she wants to do it now. I can't wait. My wolf is itching for her mate's love and approval. Call me crazy if I depend on a guy so much, especially a guy I haven't even met yet.
"Samantha! Are you getting ready!" My mother calls out to me. I sigh and started heading to the bathroom.
I take out all the things I need for my little relaxation. I strip out of my clothes and get into the bath. I put my hair into a mess bun and start applying the face mask I got from LUSH. The music I started playing was bursting in my ears. I'm listening to Vagabond by MisterWives. Something about this song relaxes me. I take deep breaths and sit there waiting for my timer to go off.
I get out of the tub and place my towel around my chest. I sit down in front of the vanity and started washing my face and brushing my teeth. Once I finish that I start my makeup. Normally my mother would do this, but I feel capable enough to do it myself. I'm a big girl right? After that I take my hair out of the bun it was so lazily put in. I straighten my hair and put it in a really neat ponytail.
The dress I'm wearing to the first day of the ball definitely isn't my choice. It shows a little too much skin for my liking but the dress is beautiful. I put my slip on and start to get into the dress. It's finally on. I look in the
mirror
and smile. I place the mask on my face and slip on my shoes and jewelry. Then I hear a knock on my door.
"Are you all done?" A small voice asks. I laugh and answer with a 'yes'. The door opens and I see my mother in tears forming in her eyes. "Sweetie, you look beautiful." She awes. I smile, "Thank you." A small blush forms on my cheeks. A single tears falls from my mother's right eye and I pull her into a hug. "I'm so sorry for crying like this, " She laughs, "But my baby's all grown up." She sighs. "I'll always be your baby."
I carefully walk down the stairs and I'm greeted by my father. "Samantha, you look amazing." He compliments. I give him thanks and we start taking pictures as if I'm going to prom. Which in a way I kind of am. Minutes later I hear the doorbell ring . "I'll get it." I offered and went to my door.
There in front of me is my best friend, Genelia. "Sam, you look gorgeous." Genelia awes. "Me? Look at you!" I throw the compliment back at her. But she truly does look amazing. She is wearing a red dress. It starts to flow out at her waist and the puff is made of miniature flowers. The top is a velvet material and she looks fabulous.
Genelia's mother and father walk in and they greet me, my mother and my father. We talk for a while until our limo gets here to pick us up. I take a few deep breaths and I say goodbye to my parents. I grab Genelia's hand and we walk out together.
"Miss Samantha Skylar Wright and Miss Genelia Mary Fosters." The limo driver calls for us. We hurry over to him, I mean, as fast as girls in heels can. We giggle as we get into the limo and we start our two hour drive to the Central Hall.
On the car ride I get the pleasure to meet many other girls. A few of them told me that it wasn't their first year participating. That's the last rule. If you don't meet your mate in your first year, you have to come again until you do. But this year, I hear we're having a special guest.
"I hear that he's never come to one of these before."
"So, he's like our age?"
"No! He's like twenty-six."
I listen very closely to the two girls' conversation. "Did you hear that Ginny?" I get Genelia's attention. "Hear what?" She says so cluelessly. "There's a man coming this year and he's twenty-six." I inform her. "He's been attending for... nine years!" Genelia shrieks in shock. "Goddess no! This is his first year." I tell her. "But the rules-" I cut her off. "He's a rule-breaker I guess."
"What's his name?"
"I'm pretty sure it is Alpha Hughes."
Gasps fill the limo. The Alpha Jack Hughes? He's the most feared Alpha. I truly feel bad for whoever his mate is. He's a monster. Stories about him circle around in my pack every month. This month he killed a family of six because they didn't obey him. What kind of man does that?
"But isn't he like a hottie?"
"I don't know! If I get ten feet of him he might kill me!"
"That's preposterous."
"No, if he can kill his own parents, he can kill me."
"What if he's your mate?"
"HE ISN'T!"
Fear filled in my veins as I make myself listen to their conversation. I know I shouldn't eavesdrop but this is too good to not get in on! How come none of us heard about his appearance at the Mating Ball? "Hey! Sam! Snap out of it." Genelia orders. "Sorry, I was thinking." I apologize. Genelia rolls her eyes and continues her story.
"The chance of us finding our mate is about eighty-seven percent." Genelia is a wiz with math. I never understood how she does it. "How did you get that!" I say. "Okay..." She goes on explaining to me about how she got her answer but I was too busy thinking about my mate.
He's going to be loving, nice, and very cute. He'll treat my like I'm the only woman in the world. I can see it now. We're dancing together at the ball, his hands are on my waist but they aren't going too low. I'm looking up at him with so much admiration my heart breaks open. He looks me in the eyes with a look that says 'I love you' but we can't call it love yet.
I dreamily sigh at my mental movie. That's all I want. Love. It is a beautiful thing. I see the Central Hall! Girls start screaming and yelling with joy as we reach the entrance. "Girls, when you get into the ball please sit where your name is and don't move until instructed to do so. And lastly, have a wonderful night."
We all exit the limo and I thank the driver for driving us to the night of our lives. "We're here." Genelia laughs. I join her. "Are you ready?" I ask. Genelia looks at me sadly and shakes her head. "Don't worry, babe, you'll be fine." I encourage her. She smiles at me and we proudly walk into the Central Hall to attend our first Mating Ball.
"Welcome to our 127th Mating Ball! Ladies and Gentlemen put on your masks! Now, may I have all the ladies come up here!" Lady Beatrice cheers. We all stand up and go to the stage. "Okay! We will be rating you on your strength and beauty that you all tested for last month."
Each of the girls went through and because my last name was Wright, I'm one of the last. "Samantha Skylar Wright!" I walk towards the podium. "Age: 17, Strength 7, Beauty: 10." I smile in satisfactory that people think I'm beautiful but the glares lead me to think otherwise. I look down and carefully exit the stage.
Afters the girls, all the boys went up. "Alpha... Jack Hughes?" Lady Beatrice calls. The crowd silences at the mention of his name. I look over to where Genelia is sitting and she's already looking at me with so much fear. I shift in my chair awkwardly.
"What's he doing here?"
"Who's his mate?"
"He's kind of cute."
"I hear he's really strong, if you know what I mean."
"He's not cute! He's a monster!"
"Come off it, he's nothing but trouble."
Those are a few of the things I could hear throughout my section of the ballroom. Lady Beatrice clears her throat and continues calling the names. I secure my mask on my face and wait for further instructions.
Once all the names are done we all go down to the dance floor and have our first dance. "Genelia-" I stop my sentence short when I see her walking off with red-haired man. I smile at her and give her a thumbs-up and go sit down. I'm the only girl sitting down. Then a smell hits me. It was a mist of Rose and Vanilla. The smell intoxicates me.
Mate.
I look around to see if anyone is looking at me. But no one is. I wonder around and the smell gets stronger the closer I get to the boys' side of the ballroom. I find his brown hair facing the opposite direction. I see him tense and he turns to face me. My eyes widen, and fear is the only emotion I am able to feel. He won't love me.
I turn my back so I'm not facing the monster that so happens to be my mate, collect myself, and I get out of there. I never look back just run. I hear footsteps behind me and I see him chasing after me. "STOP!" He orders. As an Alpha he has full control over me. I stop and turn around. I close my eyes waiting for him to say the words. "What are you doing?" He questions. I open one eye and then open the other. "I-I was w-waiting-" He rolls his eyes. "Spit it out."
"I-was-waiting-for-you-to-reject-me."
He pierces his lips and nod. "I'm not rejecting you." He looks at me. The look isn't filled with love, or any emotion. "Y-You a-aren't?" I'm full of bewilderment. "Stop stuttering." Alpha Hughes says impatiently. "S-Sorry Alpha." I look down. "What's your name?" He asks. I clear my throat, "Samantha Skylar Wright," I whisper. "What pack are you from?" He quizzes me. "Midnight Shadow." I whisper again. He nods and walks away.
I stand there for what seems to be forever. What just happened? He cannot be my mate! He's a murderer! A monster! He's probably going to kill me after the third day. Tears fill up in my eyes. "No." I whisper and fall onto the ground cradling myself. All I really want right now is my father to tell me it's all just dream. Alpha Hughes just cannot be my mate. He just can't be.
"Sam?"
I look behind me and there stood my best friend. "Ginny." I cry. "What happened?" She wonders. "He's my mate." I answer. "Who is?" She asks. "Alpha Hughes." She stares at me. Shock in her eyes. "Alpha Jack Hughes?" I nod. "Oh sweetie." She comforts me.
"GET OFF HER!"
Genelia backs away from me and I could feel that it is Alpha Hughes. "Declare yourself!" He orders. "G-Genelia F-Fosters!" Genelia shrieks. "Leave now." And then I am left alone with the monstrosity that is my mate. "I am the only person allowed to touch you. Understand!" I weakly nod. "Get up." He demands. I get up and look at him. He starts to walk back into the Central Ball and I follow.
Alpha Hughes and I are dancing. Many people were whispering around us about the 'Beauty and the Beast' . "Can I ask you a question Alpha?" I ask. He hesitates with his answer but says yes. "After the third day, are we going to mate?" I mutter. "No, we will wait a few months but that's all you get." I nod and we continue to sway with the music.
The rest of the night was awkward. Any guy who tried to approach me had a little meeting with Alpha Hughes. I don't know how I'm going to get used to him after the third day.
"If you will all go back to your limos and have a safe night." Lady Beatrice tells us. But when I'm walking past her she stops me. "Be careful Miss Wright." She warns. "What?" I stare at her with confusion. "Your mate, he's bad for you." She whispers. "Well, tell that to the Moon Goddess." I walk away from her.
"Is it true that she's Alpha Hughes's mate?"
"Better her than me."
"But still..."
"We can't pity her okay? We have our own mates."
"But hers..."
"But ours..."
"Fine Tabitha! I won't pity her!"
"Thank you Monica."
Listening to people whisper about you sure didn't help with my self-esteem. I sigh and scoot closer to Genelia. "Tell me about your mate." I whisper. "He's sweet. There's a bit of devil in his eyes, but he's a good soul." She smiles. I smile a bit too. "What about yours?" She mutters. "What about him. He's a stranger." I say. "What do you know about him?" She questions. "His name." There's sadness in my voice.
I get home and all I want to do is sleep. But before I even get passed the threshold my mother stops me. "How was it?" She smiles widely at me. I shrug. "You didn't meet your mate?" She wonders. "I did." I whisper. "Sweetie what's wrong?" She asks alarmed. "He's not going to love me." Tears fall down my face.
"He's emotionless, he doesn't look at me like he loves me. He looks at me like I'm just some girl. He makes me feel inferior to him which I am but, he makes me feel weak. Not like the good weak, but the scared weak." I complain. "Who hurt my girl?" My dad interferes. "Daddy you can't." I warn. "Why can't I?" He gets mad. "He'll kill you." I mutter. They look at me like I'm crazy. "Samantha who's your mate?" Mother questions.
"Alpha Jack Hughes."
They fall silent. They exchange looks and they both look at me. "Go to bed, Samantha. You still have tomorrow." I nod and go up to my room. I don't bother to take a shower, because I'm taking one in the morning. I get out of my dress and all that stuff and crawl into my bed. "It's alright Samantha."
I wake up the next morning around six am. Genelia and I are going for a walk in half in hour. I throw on a sweater, a pair of Nike leggings, and sandals. I walk downstairs and sit down and enjoy granola and greek yogurt. As soon as I finish my breakfast my front door opens and Genelia is walking in my house. "Let's go." I get up and walk with her out my house.
"I am going to miss doing these kinds of things with you." She breaths in, I nod. "I'm gonna miss this after the third day." I smile. We walk together in silence and then she starts laughing. "What?" I ask. "You own those shoes?" She answers with amusement. "Yeah, why?" I wonder. "They're just..." She trails on. "They're just... comfortable." I mock. Genelia playfully rolls her eye.
"Genelia? Samantha?"
The familiar male vice rings through my ears. "Is that Ryan?" I mouth. Genelia nods. "I saw you guys and the ball last night and I thought I could catch up with you today." Ryan used to be our best friend. But his parents sent him to some prestigious private school in London. "It's great to see you again!" I smile and pull him into a hug. A floating image of Alpha Hughes appears in my head and I immediately let go of him.
We talk for a long time about nothing but everything. Not once has Ryan asked us about our mates. I definitely will not be the one to ask first. But I never said Genelia wouldn't. "Did you meet your mate?" She wonders. Helooks at her and blinks a few times. "Uh, well, not yet." He stutters. We both smile sadly at him. "Guys, I'm fine really." He laughs. I gave him a 'sure but I don't believe you' look playfully.
I start heading home after the walk with a large smile. I get home around noon. Yeah, we walk for a long time. The second day of the ball starts in nine hours so I can fit a three hour nap in, can't I?
After my very successful nap, I was waken up with a bang. "Get up Samantha Skylar Wright!" My mother used my full name. I shoot out of bed and towards the bathroom running a quick shower. I get out of there in ten minutes and start applying make up and blow drying my hair. I left my hair in loose waves on my shoulders and dart towards my room to put my dress on.
I am breathless. "You have thirty minutes until the limousine gets here." I say to myself and push to finish getting ready. I slide my dress on, along with my jewelry and shoes. I place my mask in my hand and my clutch between my left arm and left side. I look in the mirror. Remembering the man who is my mate, I start to feel self-conscious about my apparel. But quickly I realize I look fine.
As I walk down the steps I hear the driver announce my name and Ginny's and hand in hand we rush towards the limo that would take us to our second night of the ball. Our last night seeing our parents.
This time the ball seems more fun. The music is more upbeat and happy and people look like they're enjoying themselves. "You know, I really hoped you were my mate." I hear someone say sheepishly. I turn around and I'm greeted by a boy with light brown hair. "Is that so?" I question. "Yeah, but then I didn't feel the connection so I thought-"
"Who the hell are you?"
Alpha Jack Hughes has officially come. "I-I was just-" Alpha Hughes interrupts him again. "You were just what?" He asks threateningly. "I was just l-leaving." The boy answers and rushes away before I can protest. "Alpha was that really necessary?" I question. "Yes, Samantha, it was. You're mine, all of you. Everyone needs to know that if they even talk to you without my consent they will be punished." Alpha Hughes sneers.
We dance together on the dance floor for some time. And he does the unexpected. "You look lovely tonight." He compliments me. A bright red blush forms on my face. "Th-Thank you, Alpha." I thank him. The blush was so thick it took minutes for it to go away. I'm so thankful he couldn't seem my face right now; it is deep in his shoulders. But his scent almost made me forget how bad he was.
The whole night seemed awkward. I know nothing about him. The point of the ball is to meet your mate and get to know him or her during the three days, right? But Alpha Hughes makes it completely hard to get even a word out of him. Even when I do, I feel like I'm bothering him.
"A-Alpha, can I ask you a question?" I toughen up. "Of course, Samantha." Alpha answers "Why didn't you attend in any of the previous balls?" I ask. Alpha Hughes stares at me. I feel like the whole ball heard what I asked and stops just to hear his answer. His eyes travel mine as if he's trying to read my mind. Just like I'm trying to read his. "I guess that, my pack desperately needed a Luna and an heir now.
They couldn't wait anymore."
His answer isn't romantic. He's only here because his pack needed him to be. I nod sadly. "Right." I whisper and sadness took over my face. He looks at me weirdly like he said something wrong. But I don't know what's wrong with me. He'll never love me for me. He's a heartless man who kills for pleasure. I'll be lucky if I even survive in his pack for a month! He's a monster. He won't love me. But he's taking me for his pack.
Genelia came over for a sleepover and together we watched movies. The night is so much fun. I rather sit around in pajamas all day than go to the ball and be with my mate. As bad as that sounds, nothing beats Genelia. We finish watching The DUFF and move on to the next movie. "Cher is my spirit animal!" I joke. Ginny shakes her head. "I prefer Dionne." Genelia admits. I drop my jaw. "Well, Dionne is really pretty. But! Cher is really pretty too." I argue with no point.
Genelia sleeps over but leaves before I wake up so that her parents don't get mad. This is my last day ever in my room. I packed up all my stuff a week before the ball. All I have left to do is get ready.
For the last day we get our on private limos. But four hours fore that, we get our bags taken away and delivered to our mate's pack. Tradition is that the girl leaves with the boy. And I'm not happy because a certain someone left out key information.
"I need to talk to you." Genelia says during the last scene of The Last Song. "What is it?" I ask, starting to worry. "It's about my mate." She starts. "What about him?" I grow impatient. "His pack... um, uh, his pack is from Montana." She spits out. I couldn't respond. "And-And I know we had this plan where our mates would magically be from the same pack. But you know." She continues.
"Genelia?" I whisper. "Yeah, Sammie?" Genelia used my childhood nickname. "Will I ever see you again?" I question. Ginny had tears welling up in her eyes. And she starts to shake her head. "No." She answers. Tears start to fly out of my eyes when I hear this. "I'm gonna miss you." I cry. "I don't want you to." Ginny says. "But we both know that I am." I laugh a bit. "I love you Sammie." Ginny whispers. "I love you too Ginny."
Thinking back on the moment brought back all the sad feelings I never wanted to feel. I tug at the necklace she got for me on my 14th year. "Sam?" I hear my father's voice. "Hey daddy." I smile. "You don't have to go." He says. "I do-" He cuts me off. "I don't want you to be mates with that monster! You deserve better!" My father yells. "Daddy-" He cuts me off again. "I'm just going to miss you, pumpkin." He pulls me in for a hug.
I start getting ready and you know the drill. But this day seems to be a drag. I'm happier when I can dream about having a good mate. But if I spend forever dreaming I'll never know.
My parents hold a 'Third Day Photoshoot' for me. I get to model my dress and this one is my favorite out of all of them. It's more me. It's soft and innocent. I feel more confident wearing this.
I get into the limo and the driver starts to play all of these love songs from the early 2000s. I feel a sense of euphoria wash over me. But it's gone as fast as it comes. I just realized I'll never see my parents again. It is like I'm an orphan now. "Excuse me?" I try to get the driver's attention. "Yes, Madam Wright?" The driver says. "Uh, it's Samantha. But will I ever see my parents again?" I question. The driver is silent. Silence kills. And so does the answer.
"Miss Wright? Alpha Hughes is waiting for you in the west wing." A young girl tells me. She guides me to a dark room. I receive a tight feeling in my stomach and ominous. "He's in there." Then she runs off before I could thank her. "Wait-" I am cut off by a voice that doesn't belong to my mate. "Sweet, sweet Samantha," The voice soothes, "You've always been dependent haven't you?" I don't know who this person is.
The man grabs my waist and I whimper. "Is it true you're the mate of an inimical." The voice says again. "Who... who are you?" I wonder. "You'll find out soon enough, but until then, stay beautiful, love." Then the man disappears leaving me dumbfounded. Who is he? How does he know me? Should I tell Alpha Hughes? "Samantha? What are you doing in here? Come on." Ginny grabs me and pulls me to the ball.
Once I could get a good look at Genelia I notice how classic she looks. "Genelia, you look spectacular." I awe. "You look grand yourself." She twirls me around. I laugh and then sigh. "We should probably go to our seats." I offer. Genelia whispers a 'yeah' and we walk to our seats two tables away from each other.
"Welcome to the last day of the Mating Ball!" Lady Beatrice announces. The crowd erupts into the applause and soon enough I join in too. "As you all know, you'll be leaving with your mate today. Girls, your bags have already been delivered..." I start to tune Lady Beatrice out and my eyes divert to Alpha Hughes. He's already looking at me. I blush a little and look back up to Lady Beatrice who is explaining something.
When we're able to get up, I quickly aim to find Alpha Hughes and tell him about the man. Then I hear whispers in my ear from an unfamiliar voice.
But does he even care?
What's he going to about it?
You're all alone on this one, Samantha.
The voice is quiet and raspy. It's not at all like the man from the west wing earlier today. But why did the girl tell me he's Alpha Hughes? He looks nothing like him. Not that I saw his face, but his silhouette, is nothing like Alpha Hughes's.
When I do find Alpha Hughes he's on a phone call and I start to listen carefully to his call.
"What do you mean he's free?"
"Who let him go?"
"He escaped?"
"When I get back there you better pray for your life-Samantha?"
"I'm not calling you Samantha. Hang up Dean!"
Alpha Hughes gives me all of his attention. "I'm-I'm sorry for listening to your c-conversation, I was j-just looking for you." I quickly apologize. "Apology accepted. Next time tell me if you're here." Alpha Hughes instructs. I vigorously nod and we start to walk back to the ball. I could feel eyes on me, I turn around to see if it was Alpha Hughes but it isn't. Someone's watching me.
I soon start to worry if I should tell Alpha Hughes. I mean what if I don't tell him and the man gets me. Or, what if I do tell him and he doesn't care. What if he has enough to deal with already and my problems are just too small? Okay, I won't tell him. But I still felt like I should.
I'm not sure if Alpha Hughes notices my dilemma at first. But the thing I suck at most: hiding emotions. "Are you going to tell me or do I have to guess?" Alpha Hughes exclaims. My heads snaps to his direction and I give out a confusing sound. "Samantha." Alpha Hughes warned. "Well, uh, um, okay I'll just blurt it out. Ready? Okay? Uh, well-" Alpha Hughes stops my rambling. "Say it." He sneers. "N-Nothing." I mutter.
The thought wanders in my head for the rest of the night. But the night is intense. I somehow get really drunk. It's not like I meant to grab the drinks, I just did. I'm currently rubbing up against some guy. Alpha Hughes isn't here so he can't stop me. "Here have another drink." The boy hands me a cup with a devilish grin. I cautiously grab the cup and take a sip out of. I start to feel dizzy and lose consciousness.
I wake up but don't open my eyes. Why? I hear punching, kicking, swearing. And all of those things are being done by my mate. "Do not ever touch her again or I'll actually kill you next time." Alpha Hughes warns. He quickly looks in my directions. Then when he sees I'm awake and rushed over to me. "Are you okay?" He says, but it isn't heartfelt. "Don't." I whisper. He glares at me. "What?"
"Did you kill him?" I ask. "Him?" He points back to the boy on the ground. "Yes, him." I scoff. "Don't disrespect me. You're apart of my pack. You follow my rules. Okay Samantha? You should thanking me, I saved your life and if you aren't grateful I'll find someone who will hurt you, then who'll save your pathetic self?" Then he walks away. Did he just...?
Alpha Hughes keeps me on his hip for the remainder of the night. I don't get to see Genelia. But I still watch her. Her and her mate dancing and laughing and being all couple-y. I look up at Alpha Hughes who's texting someone on his phone. The name is... Esme? Who is Esme? My wolf and I are both itching to find out whoever this Esme girl is.
After I threw up in the bathroom, people start leaving. The ball is over. I'm pretty sure Lady Beatrice made an announcement when I was gone. "A-Are we going to leave?" I stutter. His pack is all the way in New Jersey and guess where we are. Moon Shadow pack! "You should change into something more comfortable." He mutters. I nod. He hands me a baggy shirt and some sweatpants. I could tell they were his.
We get in his car and we start driving. I often stare out the window watching the rain slide across the soft, cold glass. Go! Be free! I tell them. New Moon is coming soon. Not every pack does this but my pack has a New Moon celebration on every New Moon. It's supposed to mean, new chances and being able to start over. And I love believing that.
The pack house is huge. It has about twelve sections all connecting to what seems to be a Meeting Hall. I'm not sure if Alpha Hughes knows I was still awake, but I know he is. I'm not sure if he ever sleeps, but I guess I'll find out tonight, right? The car comes to a soft and easy halt and someone opens my door. "Luna." The man in black greets me. "Oh I'm not-" Alpha Hughes interrupts. "You're my mate, Samantha, you're a Luna."
Alpha Hughes guides me to our room. If there is one thing I'm certain of, it's that I refuse to sleep in the same bed as him. A monster. He tells me my luggage is in the closet. I head towards it and get out a pair of pajamas. "The bathroom's to your left." He instructs. I thank him and go to change into my pajamas.
When I come back out I see that Alpha Hughes is reading, To Kill A Mockingbird. One of my personal favorites. But I'm not telling him that. So just awkwardly stand there until he notices. "Get in the bed, Samantha." He says without looking away from the book. "I... uh, um well-er, you see-" Alpha Hughes cuts me off again. "Samantha, I don't have all night. Get in the bed or sleep on the floor. I couldn't care less."
