Chapter 1 Accident

Keyla's POV

"What happened to her?"

"There was an accident. The car she was in was found at the bottom of a hill."

"Okay. What's her condition?"

"Just some cuts outside, but she seems to be having internal bleeding."

"Okay. Tell them to prepare for surgery. We'll have to operate on her before it gets worse."

"Was she alone?"

"No, she was with two other people."

"Where are they?"

The conversations were disturbing. I could hear noise everywhere. Blaring, crackling, creaking and thudding. I opened my eyes but blinked them back closed as the bright white lights from the ceiling penetrated.

I seemed to be moving on something. I struggled to open my eyes once more.

"Ouch," I winced as I tried to move my head. It hurt. Every single part of me hurts.

Finally, my eyes adjusted to the brightness. Slowly, I tilted my head and took in the surroundings. Everywhere was painted white-the ceiling and the walls. The people standing beside me, moving at the same pace as me, were also dressed in white.

"She's awake," Someone said. All eyes turned to me.

"Where am I?" I muttered. My voice sounded sore and weak.

"You're at the hospital," Someone answered.

At the hospital? No wonder they were in white. They were doctors.

"What... What the hell... Am I doing here?" I struggled to say the words.

The man next to me pulled out an injection from somewhere, analyzing the tip of the needle. "You were in an accident. But you don't have to worry because everything will be fine soon."

In an accident? The words kept playing in my head.

"How was that even possi..." Just then, something came to my mind. "Mom. Dad. Where are they?"

I looked from one person to the other, expecting an answer. But no one was ready to give it to me. I was about to ask again when a needle pierced into me without warning.

I winced.

"Don't worry Miss, you'll be fine."

I felt dizziness creeping in, tugging at me slowly. "But... But I want... To know... Where they..." Before I could complete the words, everything went black.

"Mom, come on. I'm sure Curtin is going to be happy when he sees us!"

Mom and Dad laughed. Dad was driving, while Mom was next to him. We were on our way to the White Moon Pack to meet Curtin, my big brother.

Mom tilted her head, looking at me. "Oh, Keyla! You might not know this, but your brother isn't the very open type. He would rather stay as far away from us as possible than even have breakfast with us."

I was confused. I knew Curtin wasn't always the smiling and affectionate type, but there was no way he wouldn't like being around his family. I mean, who wouldn't?

I smiled. "Well I'm sure when he sees us he is going to-Aw"

Mom turned to me. "What's up, baby? What's going on?"

"I don't Mom, I just feel a little bit..." All of a sudden I screamed.

"Baby what's going on?!"

"Is everything okay?!"

Mom and Dad yelled. They sounded frightened.

I couldn't explain the pain I was feeling inside. I opened my mouth and touched my teeth. There was blood on my gum. I felt something pricking it. Each tooth started falling off, getting replaced by longer canines and fangs. The pain was insane.

"Skies!" Mom yelled. "It's happening, Darling. She's shifting. You have to stop the car."

My eyes widened as I heard those words. But it wasn't possible. I was turning eighteen in two days. That was why we were going to see Curtin, so we would all be together. Why was it happening now?

I winced again. This time it was my fingers. My nails were falling off. I screamed as longer claws forced themselves out.

"Honey, you have to stop the car!"

"I can't! The brakes aren't working!" Dad replied.

I tried to pay attention to them, but I couldn't. The pain was unbearable. I never thought the growing of hair would hurt until now, when longer and thicker strands of hair were growing out of my hair follicles.

"What do you mean the brakes aren't working?!" Mom panicked.

Dad kept hitting something. "I have tried, but they are not working at all."

I thought the worst had passed away, but it was just getting started.

"Aaarrrhhh!" I screamed as my bones started breaking and resetting. My spine grew longer and my femurs broke into two. I felt them changing shapes and taking different forms.

I turned to look at Mom and Dad. The looks on their faces as they stared at me were horrifying. But that was when I noticed it, the two bright lights speedily approaching us.

"Mom! Dad!" I jerked up, gasping for breath.

"Call the Doctor! Tell him she's awake!" A woman in white said to another.

I glanced around the room. It was a hospital ward. I tried to straighten up, but that was when I realized that I was connected to some machines.

I winced as I tried to pull the needles out, but the woman, who I presumed was a nurse, held my hand. "You can't do that, Miss. Those machines are helping you to stay alive."

I ignored her and pulled them out. She tried to hold me back, but I growled, which surprised me. She took a step backward. I got down from the bed but staggered and fell.

"Don't just stand there, help her up!" A man in a white coat yelled. He and another nurse rushed towards me and helped me up.

"I need to see my parents," I muttered as they tried to put me back in bed. But I fought them back. "Mom! Dad! Where are you?!"

"You can't go around looking for them, Ms. Scott. You have to rest and get better. That's the only way you'll be able to see them."

"No, I want to see them now," I argued. "I have to know how they are. I have to see if they are okay and-"

"-I assure you. I'll take you to them myself when you fully recover, okay?" The doctor said, cutting me off.

I still wasn't okay with it. I wanted to see them immediately.

"No, I have to."

"Ms. Scott, please stop fighting. You just woke up from a week-long coma. You still need time to-"

"-Why are you stalling? Why not just tell her where they are," Someone said, interrupting the doctor. It was someone I was well familiar with. It was Curtin. He was standing in the doorway, hands crossed beneath his chest.

"Curtin!" I cried out. Tears rolled down my eyes as I saw him. I felt relief wash over me. If he was here, that means Mom and Dad were here too. We made it to White Moon Pack. At least that was what I thought until Curtin said his next words.

"Why don't you just tell her that they are dead?"

My heart sank. "What... What did you just say?"

That was when I noticed it, the look of disdain on his face. Without saying anything else, he walked away.

"Curtin!" I felt a surge of energy flow inside of me. I broke free from the hold of the doctor and the nurses and bolted out of the ward. I grabbed Curtin's shirt.

"Please tell me it's a lie. Tell me you are lying to me. Please tell me the truth!" I couldn't stop the tears that left the corners of my eyes. I couldn't stop the pain inside of me, neither could I believe what was going on. How could I? One minute, I was with them; and the next, they were gone. I couldn't let myself accept it.

Curtin turned around, his grey eyes staring into mine. "It's true. It happened the night you guys were coming to the White Moon Pack. There was an accident. The car was found at the bottom of a hill. Don't you remember?"

My eyes widened in shock. So it wasn't just a dream I was having earlier. It was real. Those were my memories. That was when I recalled the bright light that was approaching us. I held Curtin's shirt. " It wasn't an accident, Curtin. Someone was coming towards us-a truck." My grip tightened. "We had to find the person, Curtin. They killed Mom and Dad."

Curtin laughed. He pushed my arm away. "Oh, is that what you think?" He asked. He ran his fingers through his hair. "Guess where you were when Mom and Dad were found?"

I was confused. "Wasn't I.. In the car?"

"No Keyla!" His eyes darkened. "You were outside the car with just a few cuts, while Mom and Dad were injured, broken, and burned beyond recognition!"

I was shocked. I took a few steps back. "But... I saw the light... I saw it coming towards-Ouch," I gasped as something was injected into me from behind.

I felt a sensation overwhelm me. My legs went numb. Curtin caught me as I staggered.

"I saw it, Curtin," I muttered with my last strength. This got him upset.

I felt hands grab me from behind, gently placing me in a wheelchair. As I was about to be wheeled away, Curtin held the chair back. He crouched down, glaring at me.

"You just had to. You just had to have your first shift when you were with them. You and your wolf killed Mom and Dad, Keyla," He growled. "And I'll never forgive you for that."

I felt a tear roll down my cheek as I lost consciousness.

Chapter 2 Mate

Three Years Later

Keyla's POV

"Ms. Andrew!" The organizer called out.

"That's me!" A girl sitting three seats away from me answered, raising her hand.

"You're up!"

I watched as the girl stood up and walked towards the interview room. Before she got in, the guy who had gone in earlier stepped out. He had a depressed look on his face.

I felt my heartbeat fasten. This was a huge opportunity for me, but yet I was scared I was going to mess up. Knights Group was the wealthiest company in the country. It belonged to the family of the Alpha of the Knight Pack.

After Mom and Dad died, I moved to the White Moon Pack with Curtin. But a month ago, I returned to Knights Pack to stay with Oakley, my best friend, and her family. Though they were nice and accepted me with open arms, I still didn't want to be a burden to them, just like I was to Curtin. If I could get a spot here in the Knights Group, then I would definitely be able to fend for myself.

I watched as the person next to me went in. But when it was supposed to be my turn, someone else was called. I walked towards the organizer.

"Excuse me, Sir, you skipped my name," I said to him.

He looked at the notepad in his hand, and then back at me. "What's your name?"

"Keyla. Ms. Keyla Scott."

I watched him glance through the list of names in his hand. "Hmm. It's not here."

My heart skipped a beat. "Can you please check again?"

He glanced through once more but shook his head. "Still not here." He pulled out the Notepad beneath the one he was looking at earlier and glanced through it too.

"Oh. Here it is," He said, pointing to my name. "There seems to have been an error."

I panicked. "An error? What kind of error?"

He looked at me. "Well, you applied to be a receptionist at the front desk, but instead, your name was inputted into the list of those applying for the position of secretary."

I was taken aback. "What does that mean? Am I not getting the job?"

"That depends on your performance during the interview," he replied.

"So I'll still be taking the interview, right?"

"Yes, you will." I felt relieved at first until he said his next words. "But not now."

"What do you mean by that, Sir?"

"Since your name isn't on this list," He tapped the notepad from earlier. "And is on the other one, then you'll have to take the interview for that one. That's if you're okay with the position."

I didn't know what else to do, so I nodded. "Yes, Sir, I'm okay with it."

"Okay then. So the interview will start in three hours-"

"-THREE HOURS?!" I yelled, grabbing the attention of everyone in the hallway.

The organizer raised a brow at me. "Do you have a problem with that?"

"Umm... No Sir. It's just that I arrived at 8 a.m. and have already been here for three hours. I don't think I can wait much longer."

He chuckled. "Well, I am sorry Ms. Scott, but Knights Group is a prestigious organization that follows order, and we do not bend it for anyone. The other interview starts in three hours. You can either leave or wait. Besides, you seem to have forgotten something: you need Knights Group, not the other way around."

Without saying anything else, he walked away, leaving me both shocked and devastated. But he was right. I couldn't help but sigh. I had my options laid out before me, and I knew the one to pick.

But first, I needed to have breakfast. I left Knights Group and headed for a Café by the corner. This morning, Oakley had insisted that I eat before leaving, but I refused. Who would have thought that I would be in such a situation?

I walked up to the Barista at the counter. He was a young guy, maybe my age. He was handsome and tall. He was probably some human boy who had to make money to pay off his college bills.

When I got to the counter, he leaned in. "Hello," he said, his smirk deepening. "So what can I get you?"

I scanned the menu above him. "Umm... I'll take a cappuccino and an everything bagel with cream cheese."

He nodded, penning down the order. "Anything else?"

"That's it," I said, sliding a bill across the counter.

He handed the note to someone through the window opening behind him. I was about to walk away when he spoke up.

"So tell me, what's a beautiful wolf like you doing here in the city?"

I was shocked, but not by his question. Though most cities in the country were governed by wolves, we still loved to stay close to the woods and away from the big cities. What surprised me was the fact that he could tell I was a wolf.

"How do you know?" I asked.

"Know what?" He looked confused.

I looked behind me; there was no one there. Then I leaned towards him. "How do you know that I'm... You know, a wolf?"

"Uhh... I can smell it on you. Though it's faint, it's still there."

"Oh."

He raised a brow at me. "Don't you?" He asked. My silence seemed to have given him his answer. He couldn't help but chuckle. "What kind of grown-up wolf can't smell others around her?" He stopped and narrowed his eyes. "Wait a minute, don't tell me you haven't gotten your wolf. How old are you?"

Just then, someone came out of the door behind the counter with my order. I grabbed the tray.

"Hey, wait a minute!" The Barista yelled, but I didn't stop. I found a table far away from the counter and sat there. I was sure he wouldn't be able to leave his post of duty.

As I took a bite out of my bagel, I recalled the Barista's words. It brought back memories. Memories I had tried to forget. He was wrong. I had my wolf. At least I had her-once-three years ago. She just had to come at the wrong time.

After eating, I rested my head on the table, reminiscing. While I was together with Curtin at the White Moon Pack, he never tried to hide his anger and blamed me for Mom and Dad's death. I knew I deserved it. But what hurt more was him trying to reconnect me to her, Karen, my wolf.

He would make me go through brutal trainings; trainings that would cause me pain and push me to anger just so it would trigger a shift and a reconnection to my wolf. Well, it didn't work-I didn't allow it.

"Hello. Hello Miss," Someone called out, tapping me. I rubbed my eyes as I opened them. It was the Barista from earlier. He pointed towards my bag. "Your phone. It has been ringing for a while now."

"Thank you," I muttered. I opened my bag and pulled out my phone. Oakley was calling.

"What's up?" I said as I picked up the call.

"Where the heck are you, Keyla? I've been trying to reach out to you for ages now."

I rolled my eyes as I chuckled at her exaggeration. "Sorry about that. My phone was in my bag."

"Okay. So tell me, how was the interview?"

My eyes widened as I heard the word 'interview.' I pulled away my phone from my ear and stared at the screen. It was already three hours past.

"No, no, no." I stood up, picking up my bag. "I'm sorry, Oakley, but I'm going to have to call you later."

I ended the call and zoomed out of the Café. In less than five minutes, I was in the Knights Group. Just as I got to the hallway where the interview was taking place, I heard the organizer call out my name.

"I'm here!" I screamed and then crouched over, gasping for breath.

He looked at me for a few seconds before shaking his head. "You're up."

I tried to straighten my disheveled hair as much as I could. Just as I closed the gap between me and the interview room, I felt her, Karen. A chilly sensation ran through me, something I had never felt before.

I froze one spot, confused by the sudden feeling I was experiencing. Why the heck was she there? We never reconnected. I thought she was gone forever. Why did she have to show up again?

"Are you okay?" The organizer asked.

"Yes, I am. I'm just feeling a little bit nervous," I lied.

He sighed. "Well, that doesn't matter, because they are waiting for you."

I nodded and started for the door again. The feeling doubled. Karen was hopping inside of me, panting and... longing. It was like she was excited about something.

Stepping into the room, that was when it hit me-like a thunderbolt. Woodsmoke, leather, and cinnamon mixed. I wasn't a fan of cinnamon, but right now I long for it.

I scanned the room. All of a sudden, my eyes landed on him-the cinnamon-my mate.

Chapter 3 Job offer

Keyla's POV

I stared at my phone, waiting for the email.

Oakley grabbed my shoulders from behind, leaning in closer. "Has it come yet?"

I let out a sigh. "No, it hasn't." It was two days since I had the interview. We were told that the results would be sent by noon, today. It was already past 2 p.m. and I still hadn't seen anything. I had already lost hope, but Oakley was the opposite.

She sat on the kitchen stool next to me, throwing her hand around my shoulders. "Well, you don't have to worry about it. I'm sure they'll pick you."

"It's not that simple. Besides, I told you I messed up at the interview. I don't think they'll want me."

Oakley pressed on. "Still, Keyla, he is your mate. I'm sure he'll want to have you close by, and then you two can do a little-" She pouted her lips, making weird kissing sounds.

I couldn't help but chuckle. But I knew she was wrong. I closed my eyes, feeling frustrated as I reminisced about what happened that day.

After walking into the interview room, I stood by the door staring at my mate. He was handsome, so handsome I wanted to grab him and hold him forever. He had strong facial features, jet black hair that was neatly styled, and then there were his eyes. They were a deep shade of brown. His gaze was intriguing, like he was piercing through my soul. I kept staring at him. It was like the world had frozen. That was until he spoke up.

"Are you here for the secretary position, or did you come to audition for the role of a mime?" He folded his arms below his chest and leaned back in his seat-his eyes now holding no expression.

"Um... Well, I came-"

He turned to the organizer. "You brought a clown here. Is this some kind of joke to you?"

"I'm... I'm sorry Sir... I didn't know she was like this," the organizer muttered.

I watched how the bold man who spoke to me earlier cowered in fear at the words of my mate. I was both shocked and confused. I could have sworn that when I came in I saw his eyes widen in shock, like he knew that I was his mate. But right at that moment, the man I was staring at was completely different.

"If she isn't ready for the interview, then call the security to take her outside. I don't have time to waste," he said, staring at his watch. All of a sudden, he turned to me. "Are you ready?"

I nodded. "Yes... Yes, I am mat-I... mean, Sir," I stuttered. And the rest of the interview went on with me stuttering, staring, and acting weird every single time I caught him looking at me.

Just then, my phone beeped, pulling me back to reality.

"Is it them?!" Oakley asked as she leaned close, staring into my phone.

I opened the notification, and my eyes widened in shock.

"You got it! You got the job!" She yelled, pulling me in for a hug. She noticed my indifference. "Shouldn't we be celebrating?"

I dropped my phone on the kitchen counter. "I don't know if I should be or if I should be wailing in pain."

"What do you mean by that?"

"I... I didn't just get the job, but I got the position of secretary of Knights Group's acting CEO."

Oakley looked confused. "Okay... And?"

I turned to her. "And he is Chase Knight, my mate."

***

One week later

"Taxi!" I screamed at the first one I saw as I left Oakley's house. He pulled over. I opened the door and jumped. "Please take me to Knights Group's Head Headquarters."

He nodded. "Okay, Miss."

I closed my eyes and prayed to the Moon Goddess for us to get to the company soon.

"You seem bothered, Miss," The taxi driver said, staring at me through the rearview mirror.

I sighed. "Yes, I am."

"Is it something you can share? Who knows, it might help with the stress."

I looked out of the window pane, chewing my nails. It was a habit I had started after Mom and Dad died. "Well, I recently just got a job at Knights Group's HQ, and today I'm running late for work- "

"-Wait a minute! Did you just say Knights Group?"

I looked at him. "Yeah. I just did."

He chuckled. "Then you should be bothered. I heard the CEO is a demon. He drags people who mess up and throws them into the gutters like trash."

I swallowed hard as I looked away. Fear had crept in. If the driver thought he had helped, then he was so wrong; he just made things a lot worse.

The moment we got to the company, I paid him and hurried in. I glanced at my watch.

"Shit!" I was two minutes late already. I entered the elevator, hoping to get to the top floor as soon as possible. Just then, I felt an excitement rampaging inside of me, something that happened only when he was there. Fear gripped me.

Suddenly, a hand poked through the elevator doors before it was completely shut. When the doors opened up again, my eyes widened in shock. It was Chase.

Without saying anything, he walked into the elevator and stood next to me.

"Good morning, Sir," I greeted him, but he ignored me.

Though I was freaking out inside of me, I couldn't help but take in that cinnamon smell. He looked handsome as always. My wolf seemed to be sharing in my thoughts and feelings. She kept hopping, screaming the word "mate!" every second. I hated it.

As we got to the top floor, Chase headed straight for his office while I followed from behind. Noticing the pitiful looks that everyone else gave me, my heartbeat fastened. I knew I was in for a whole new level of scolding.

I stopped at my table which was in front of his door, sat down, and started on some work I had left the night before. An hour passed, two hours, then four hours, and I didn't hear a single thing from Chase. A part of me felt happy. For the past few days, he had been treating me like I was nothing to him. Now, I can't help but feel like he cared about our mate bond.

Just then a call came in. "This is Knight's Group Headquarters, how may I help you?" I asked as I answered the phone.

"By coming to my office and making a cup of coffee for me, just the way I like it," Chase said. My heart skipped a beat. "And please, hurry up."

"Yes... Yes, Sir." I stood up and hurried into his office.

Chase was in his chair. He didn't bother making eye contact with me. He just stared at the screen of his tablet. I walked towards the coffee machine to get it started. When I was done, I took the coffee to him. He took a sip out of it and nodded.

"I'll be leaving then, Sir," I said and turned around.

"Hold on," he commanded. I turned to him, but he was still staring at the screen, not glancing at me. "Get me the blue file on the top shelf."

I nodded. "Okay, Sir." I walked towards the shelf and reached for the top layer. It was a lot higher than I thought it was. I stretched my hand, hoping to get to the file, but I couldn't reach it. All of a sudden, that smell hit me, closer than ever.

When I turned around, Chase was right behind me-his brown staring at me. I was intoxicated by his smell. It made me react. It made my whole body react. It made my wolf react, giving her some power. She was about to place her hands around his neck when he took a step backward. That was when I realized what he was doing. He had gotten the file himself.

He looked at me before heading for his table. "Can I ask you a question?"

"Yes... Yes, Sir," I nodded.

He kept the file on the table. "Are you here to do your job or something else?"

"I'm... I'm here to do my job, Sir," I replied.

"Then why did you resume late today and -" He turned, his eyes glaring at me. "-what makes you think you can touch me?"

My heartbeat fastened. "I never meant to come late, Sir, something happened at home, and I also didn't mean to touch you. I-"

"-Let me guess, your wolf was the one who wanted to?"

My eyes widened in surprise, a smile playing at the corners of my lips. "Yes, Sir. She made me do it. She was the one who-"

"-Do I look stupid to you?" He asked. His eyes had darkened. He walked towards me, closing the gap between us. I took a few steps back, but when I got to the wall, there was nowhere else to retreat to.

He raised my chin, his brown eyes staring into mine. The places his fingers brushed went hot, sending electric waves through my body.

"Listen here, Ms. Scott, I know you feel like I am entitled to you because you are my mate, but get this, I am not, and will never be. So get that stupid thought out of your head. You will come to work early, and you will keep your filthy hands to yourself. To me, you are just an employee, got it?" He growled.

Tears rolled down my cheeks as his words pierced through me like a sharp sword. I was about to say something when the door to the office flew open.

A woman stood by the doorway, looking confused. "Babe, what the heck is going on?!"
