ATHENA'S POV
"Get out and never come back!"
The voice of my father resonated in my ears as he spat on me whilst talking.
Mother was there also. She wouldn't even look at me.
I turned to her. "Mother, I'm sorry. I don't know what came over me!" I pleaded.
"Athena, You do not belong here. There is an evil inside you and it spreading so fast. You shouldn't be amongst us. Leave!" she said in a loud tone.
"Why would they do this to me?" It wasn't my fault.
I never intended to kill Jonas. I got angry and things went haywire.
He was standing right in front of me saying all sort of things about my late baby sister.
I was angry. I couldn't take it anymore. My inner wolf came out. I tried to calm it down but it wouldn't listen. The shift was swift and before I knew it, I slit his throat with my sharp claws.
He bled all over my clothes and another member of the pack walked in and saw what had happened.
They wouldn't just hear me out.
"I do not want to see you here, anymore. You are not mine! This pack rejects you and I say so on behalf of the Alpha. Out!" he shouted.
"Take her away from here, far off from our territory. She is a forbidden fruit!" he spat on my face and walked away.
He wasn't willing to hear me. Mother turned her back on me as the other werewolves came and carried me out.
They pushed me and kicked me hard.
I cried.
I could feel my heart failing as they carried me carelessly and threw me to the ground when they got deeper into the woods.
"Ugh" I grunt as I am kicked in the stomach again.
They won't stop kicking me.
"Demon! Jonas was my friend and you killed him," one of the werewolves who stood around said.
"I'm sorry. I......." I stuttered.
A hit landed on my face before I could utter another word.
"What should we do with her?" one of them muttered.
"Her father doesn't want her anymore. We should beat her and dump her body somewhere," another responded.
Before I could say another word in protest, I was once again assaulted by blows and kicks.
There are cuts and blood stains all over my body, and slowly, everywhere begins to darken.
I lose strength and stop struggling.
Before I knew it, one of them slapped me in the face, bringing me back to reality.
"Your death would mean nothing to nobody. The pack forbids an evil like you!" his voice echoed
I lay there helpless as my nose bleed and I cough out profusely.
I am beaten and injured within every inch of my mortal body. Even If I can still move, what could I possibly do?
These men are pack warriors trained to fight.
There was nothing I could do against them.
I am suddenly aware of the sounds of rushing water, and my heart picks up even faster as they lifted me.
"Let's dump her body into the river," I heard one of them say.
This is it; my end. They must think I'm dead already.
It's not fair. I don't deserve this. I can't die like this.
"Please... help me," I whimper but no response. Without delay, I am thrown high up into the air, and for just one eccentric moment, it feels terrific.
Free, like I am flying, and then gravity steps in. I fall so fast that I can't breathe between my aching ribs before submerging in the frigid, ice-cold water.
The force at which I hit the water is so jarring that I swear I feel a bone crack. I can't swim; my limbs are useless, but somehow, I manage to float on my back.
I don't know how long I float downstream; I am aware of the jagged rocks that bump and scratch at me, the sun moving through the sky and finally setting, and the crickets coming out to sing.
But as for being consciously aware of all these, no. I am not. I float in and out of consciousness, never fully passing out as if something was stopping me from doing so.
And I know for sure, that the moment I lose consciousness, I die. Owing to that, I courageously hang on for as long as possible.
Perhaps someone would come and save me before I give up the ghost.
I was carried by the current of the water and it felt like I spent days not until my head hit a rock as the water poured me out.
I opened my eyes slightly and all I could see was thick woods. "The water must have brought me here," I thought.
I laid there for hours with no one to come to my aid. I wander the woods like a lost soul for days, bleeding.
Everything became blurry as I fell back to the ground.
Suddenly, I become aware of running paws approaching me from afar.
Many paws. I think someone is coming for me.
Soon, I am cradled into the arms of a man which sets off all alarm bells in my head. No one in the pack treats me gently.
"Who are these people?"
I still can't move. From the corner of my eyes, I see the wolves shuffle away as someone's footsteps can be heard walking closer.
A pair of green boots come within my eyesight. The man beside me bows his head to the person before stepping back.
"What is this?" a female voice, filled with authority, demands.
An unfamiliar one.
"Who are these people, for goddess's sake? And what do they want from me?"
"We picked up her scent some minutes ago while on patrol. She is still breathing, ma," the man who carried me, answered.
"What about our other scouts?" the woman asked.
"We are clear. There seem to be no intruders reported to be around. She appears to be the only one here," the man replied.
"You can't be too sure. Send the wolves to do another sweep before reporting back to the pack house," she said, her eyes now turned towards where I was laid.
The young woman walked towards me, bent over, and looked me straight in the eyes. My vision was still blurry so I couldn't make out her face and the tattoo on her neck seemed to have caught my attention. It was that of a butterfly and it seemed like it was moving as I tried to stare it closely.
"Who is she?" I thought.
She wore a glove that had strange markings on them and this got me a bit scared.
"Do you think she is a rebel? Perhaps we should kill her right here," the one who carried me said.
"Go ahead, she is dead anyways," the young woman said.
"No....please..." I stammered.
"No!"
"Stop!" a voice from behind echoed.
LYRA'S POV
I stare in pity at the poor girl. She is severely injured and bruised in different body parts.
Who would do something like this?
"Hurry up. We have to take her to the pack clinic right away," I told Josh, a warrior wolf.
I watch as he lifts her gently, and we begin hurrying steadily but fast.
As we clear the woods, I break off from them.
"You guys go on ahead. I will meet you later," I tell them.
I head to the mansion and my brother's office. I enter without knocking.
"Lyra, I have told you several times to always knock before entering," he says without lifting his head from the papers he was looking at.
"I don't want to," I retort.
"One of these days, I won't take it lightly with you when you do so," he replied.
"I doubt it," I answered as I flopped down on one of the chairs facing him and placed my feet on his desk.
He sighs at my antics before looking up. Tristan Celeste, my very own stubborn brother. Alpha of the Celeste pack.
"Shouldn't you be busy right now? What do you want now?" he demands. He was already tired of my crap as he places his hands on his forehead.
"Well, I brought in someone. We found her half-dead. She is with us now," I answered.
"You still need to question her to make sure she isn't a threat to us before we decide to take her in fully but I leave that to you. Do your thing," he instructed.
"Yes, sir." I get up to give him a mock salute before walking away.
There was something strange about her scent though. She smells different from us. Something not wolf-like, not human also. I kept that from my brother, of course.
I am not sure he would take that lightly if he found out I brought in a strange being into the pack. As the Alpha, he takes matters like that very seriously.
I dare not go against him nor his commands despite being my brother. He is like a god we all worship. A lot of things he has sacrificed for this pack. For that reason, I respect and adore him so much.
"I guess I'd just keep that information to myself and find out who exactly she is," I said to myself.
ATHENA
I woke up to the sound of a beeping machine, bright lights in the room nearly blinding me as I tried to make sense of where I was.
"Where am I?" I wondered.
"Did they take me back to Mother and Father? Am I back at Crystal Moon pack house?
It can't be. I shouldn't be alive if that was the case.
I took a good look around and it happened that I was in some sort of clinic. I could see sickbeds all around the room and tools that resembled first aid kits and medical equipment.
"You are awake," a voice came long from beside me.
I look over to see two women standing at my bedside. One is the woman who now appeared to be the young lad I saw earlier, who had saved me.
The voice that asked the question belonged to the other woman.
"I am Sasha the healer. I have been watching over your health," she introduces herself.
"What happened.... Ho... How long have...I......" I break off to clear my throat.
My voice is feint and it happened that I can't speak well.
"Don't strain yourself; your vocal cords are bruised," Sasha says. "Your whole body is still in its recovery phase. You still need rest. I am amazed you managed to hold on that long," she commented.
"This is Lyra," she gestures to the other woman. "She is the one who saved you and brought you to the clinic."
"Thank you," I voiced out.
"Now tell us what your name is and where you are from," Lyra asked.
"Athena. My name is Athena. I am from the Crystal Moon pack. I was....." I spoke weakly.
"I knew it. What are you doing here? Who did this to you?" she interrupted.
I paused. I have to rethink this. Whatever I say next might determine what these strange people will do to me. I can't tell them I was sent away.
I can't tell them about my shift. I can't tell them I killed someone!
"How do I tell them I have no control over my werewolf?"
"If I tell them I was sent out by my parents and rejected by the pack that would only make me look like a rebel?"
I could remember the word of my father then "No pack looks upon a rebel werewolf with mercy!" he reiterated. That night was when I first raised my voice at him. He sat me down and taught me a few things about the werewolf community.
From Lyra's reply, she already knew I was from the Crystal Moon pack so she must have some notion in her head but I can't say what it is.
I thought for a minute what I could say but there was no idea after all.
"Athena. You are not responding. Who did this to you and why?" Catherine asked again, her gaze focused on me.
I became scared. "Is your pack responsible for this?" she asked.
"Are you a cast out? She asked further but I looked away.
"Please where am I?" I asked, my face turned away from her.
"Athena. You are in the Celeste pack territory," Sasha the healer muttered.
"Celeste?"
No! It can't be. I am forbidden to be here. That is the rival pack of the Crystal Moon. Those two hated themselves even the legends have it that they have been enemies from long ago.
"How am I supposed to tell them what happened? That would only stir up something I can't control.
They might even kill me.
"The Alpha has already been informed of your presence. We just need to know who did this to you and why. Your stay would be questioned so......" Sasha the healer explained.
Oh my God. Their Alpha already knows I am here. What would I say?
My mind raced. My heartbeat increased and I began to breathe heavily.
"I think she is going into shock!" Sasha said.
"Anna!"
A strange scent rented the air.
And suddenly I heard a thick voice.
"Is that her?"
It's Alpha Tristan in the room. Lyra whispered.
My heart skipped a beat.
"Talk," he shouted!
ATHENA'S POV
"Lock her in!"
The Alpha's voice came aloud to the men who held me bound.
I weep as I am cast into the dungeon.
It was a dark place and it was empty.
Thank goddess for the holes in the wall through which light from outside reflected through.
It would have been complete darkness in here.
I crawled around as I could still feel the sharp pain in my back. It aches.
My wolf was quiet. A terrible being. Only helps in the most awkward situation.
I hadn't recovered fully.
I couldn't blame Lyra or the other lady, they couldn't have done anything. He was the Alpha and his words were final.
I sat on the ground and wept bitterly.
I thought my suffering had come to an end.
I just got myself into another.
I was lone for days and felt like ending my life with my bare hands.
But I couldn't.
The air was polluted and I felt nauseated.
"How do I survive this hell?" I pondered.
Just while I sat there in isolation, I went deep into thought.
The thoughts of my baby sister invaded my mind and tears rolled down my eyes.
I remember that fateful night.
It was serene, I recall.
My hometown, that night.
The streets was at peace. Mother was already asleep and Father was on a call and seem to be in a hot argument with the person on the phone.
I was just in front of the house with my baby sister after I had patted my brother to sleep inside.
She loved to sit outside and watch the stars so I did that every night with her.
It makes her fall asleep.
She tried calling the attention of Father to a beautiful single star in the sky but he was occupied with the call and didn't respond.
"Hey, I'm here. Dad would join us when he is done, alright? I said softly as I played with her cute little hands.
If only I knew the night would end badly, I would have taken her inside.
I blame myself sometimes for allowing her stay up late.
While we were staring at the starry sky, an awkward silence hovered the air.
The crickets stopped chirping and it was like everything stood still
Even Father noticed and he stopped and looked back at us.
His nose got bigger like he was trying to catch a scent. It happened in a flash.
A huge wolf flew across, snatching my sister from my hands.
It held her in its mouth.
I was still a teenager and I never thought of transforming.
I stood up immediately to defend myself. Father taught us a few moves and I was ready to put them to use.
My sister cried out as she hangs downwards from the wolf's big teeth.
Before I knew it, I saw another wolf attacked my father pulling him into the woods.
"Please don't hurt her," I said, out of fear.
The wolf didn't think twice. He stared at me and in the blink of an eye, he threw my sister into the air and opened his mouth wide to catch her.
He tore her to pieces right in front of me
"Nooooooooooooo!" I screamed.
I couldn't do anything.
I stared in fright as he tore my sister's body in bits and ate her flesh.
I lost myself in that spot and everything became dark and bloody.
I couldn't watch the sight.
I can't even recognize her anymore.
Apparently, everywhere was raided and I could hear screams of pain and agony from all over.
Blood splashed and stained the buildings and street floors.
I stood still.
My mother rushed out and seeing the almost unrecognized structure of her daughter lying in front of the wolf, she screamed and fell on her knees.
I didn't understand one thing.
"Why the wolf stood in front of her body and didn't move afterwards?" It stood there and stared at us like it was expecting us to attack.
Well, Mother later did.
After falling on her knees, she transformed and snarled at the wolf.
It stepped back and I saw mother attack it.
They rolled down the grass field in front of the house.
My body still couldn't move like I was paralyzed.
I just stood. A massive shock, you would call it. I Just watched my sister murdered in cold blood.
I could feel blood rushing through my veins as I stood there but I still didn't move.
My eyes were heavy and it was difficult to look to the side.
Someone hit me.
"Get inside, Athena," the lady shouted.
She lived close to our house. She dragged me as I didn't answer and locked the door behind her.
It was then I fall to the ground and hit my head on the floorboard.
As I dive into unconsciousness, I could still hear the screams from outside but this time around, they had become feint.
And before I know it, I am in motion.
All I could hear was "Don't stop,"
I was someone's shoulder who I believed was my father, the insignia on his cloth came in my line of sight as I opened my eyes slightly as he ran.
Mother was beside him and my younger brother kept crying as Mother held his hands and her legs were moving fast.
I don't know where we were heading to but I figured Father and Mother were able to get out of the house safely from the werewolf
But where were being followed or chased? That I don't know.
I saw another figure running beside Mother.
It must be our neighbor. The one who dragged from the horrific scene outside then.
She was also on the run with us.
"I think they are onto us, Jim," I heard her say to my father.
"We can make it. Just keep going."
"I'd distract them. You guys go on ahead," she said.
"No, don't," Father warned but I saw her turned into a wolf and turned back.
She sacrificed herself to save us.
"Athena! Athena!! Athena!!!"
"Wake up!" a voice echoed in my ears, snapping me out of my thoughts.
I opened my eyes to find out I was still in the dungeon
But my attention caught something else.
The owner of the voice was standing right in from me.
"It can't be. No! How did you.........."
