Cassie POV:
"Cassie, my decision is final. The wedding will proceed, but you will enter the family as my lesser consort."
Kile's voice hit me from behind, sharp and cold like a blade pulled fresh from the ice.
I stood before the massive floor-to-ceiling window in the reception hall of House Golden. The frigid glass reflected my pale face. Outside, the setting sun cast a blood-gold glow over the statue of the Flame-scale Drake in the courtyard, a towering monument to the family's power and status.
I thought I had misheard him. I turned around slowly.
Kile stood in the center of the room, dressed in the extravagant formal wear of a Half-Blood noble. The red-gold dragonfire patterns woven into the fabric across his chest seemed to mock me.
He was a Dragon-born, the heir to this house, and I was nothing but a Dragonless orphan.
"A lesser consort?" I forced the words out, fighting to keep my voice steady. "Kile, our engagement was witnessed by Duke Richmond himself. You are humiliating me. You are going against your own father's wishes."
He waved his hand in a burst of irritation. His fingers went straight to the gold stud in his left ear, twisting it-a nervous habit he always fell back on when he knew he was in the wrong.
"I will handle my father," Kile snapped. "The woman I love is Journey. I have to give her the position of primary wife."
My fingernails dug so deeply into my palms that the skin threatened to break. The pain was the only thing keeping me anchored to the floor. I stared at the man I once thought I would spend my life with. His handsome face was twisted with impatience and pure selfishness.
Before I could speak, the heavy oak doors of the reception hall creaked open. A fragile figure slipped inside. Journey Montgomery. She wore a pristine white dress, looking like a spotless lotus flower untouched by the dirt of the world.
The moment she saw me, her eyes widened in a perfect mask of shock and guilt. She hurried to Kile's side, her voice trembling. "Kile, are you pressuring Cassie again? I told you, I do not need a title. I can live without it."
Kile immediately pulled her into his arms, shielding her as if I were about to attack. He glared at me. "Look at yourself, Cassie! Journey is thinking only of you, and you are being completely unreasonable!"
A bitter laugh clawed at my throat. I looked coldly at Journey. This woman always managed to deliver the most vicious strikes while wearing the most innocent face.
Journey peeked out from Kile's embrace, offering me a timid, apologetic smile. "Cassie, please do not blame Kile. It is all my fault. If you truly cannot accept this, I... I am willing to go to the Dragon Healer convent. I will never marry..."
Kile's face turned dark with panic. He tightened his grip on Journey, holding her like a fragile treasure he was terrified of losing.
I took a slow, deep breath, forcing the boiling hatred down into the pit of my heart.
My mind cleared, leaving only one sharp thought. The blood debt of House Stein, my massacred family, required a platform much stronger than House Golden. This humiliation was not an end. It was my opening.
I closed my eyes. When I opened them, the anger was gone, replaced by a numb, hollow calm. I put on the gentle, submissive smile I had perfected over the years.
"Kile," I said quietly. "What do you need me to do?"
Kile froze. He clearly had not expected me to surrender so quickly. A flicker of contempt crossed his eyes, quickly swallowed by overwhelming relief and joy.
Journey smiled too. She leaned into Kile, looking at me with the triumphant, pitying gaze of a victor.
I lowered my head, avoiding their stinging eyes, playing the part of the utterly defeated girl.
Kile cleared his throat, his tone dripping with charity. "Good, Cassie. Do not worry. As a lesser consort, you will still have the honor you deserve. Tomorrow, the Elder Council will officially announce the decision."
I did not answer. I just turned around and walked toward the heavy doors. Every step felt like walking on broken glass.
Just as my hand touched the brass handle, Kile spoke again. "Also, Ayden's old quarters, the Azurewood Wing, have been empty. After you marry in, you can move in there for now."
The Azurewood Wing. The residence of the late Dragon Lord Ayden Richmond, Kile's older brother who died in the northern wars. Kile wanted to toss me into a dead man's courtyard so he would not have to look at me.
A cold, sharp smile touched my lips, hidden from their view.
I opened the door and walked out, letting it click shut behind me, trapping their satisfied whispers inside.
The corridor was empty. The tapestries of ancient Dragon-born heroes hanging on the stone walls seemed to stare down at me. I leaned against the cold stone, letting out a shaky breath, allowing myself one brief moment of physical weakness.
Then, I straightened my spine. I was not a lamb waiting for the slaughter.
I walked back to my assigned guest room. My loyal maid, Helena, rushed forward the moment I entered.
"Miss, your face..." Helena said, her eyes filled with worry.
I shook my head, signaling her to stop. I walked straight to the vanity mirror and sat down.
The girl in the glass was pale, but her eyes were burning bright. It was not despair. It was the thrill of a hunter who had just spotted her prey.
I whispered to myself. Cassie Stein, your first step begins now.
A lesser consort? No. I had a much bigger surprise prepared for them.
I sat at the vanity while Helena gently brushed my long hair. Through the mirror, I watched the deep concern etched into her face.
"Helena," I said softly, "prepare the chest of dowry my mother left for me."
Helena's hand stopped mid-stroke. She stared at my reflection, her voice tight. "Miss, are you truly going to... accept this humiliation?"
I shook my head. The eyes looking back at me in the glass were entirely devoid of warmth. "No. We are just changing tactics. We are going to marry into a place that is actually worth it."
Cassie POV:
Early the next morning, I was summoned to the Elder Council chamber of House Golden.
It was an ancient, oppressive room. The domed ceiling was painted with the myth of the First Dragon forging the world in fire. The air was thick and heavy, designed to make anyone standing in the center feel small.
Lord Morgan, the Chief Elder and Kile's uncle, sat at the head of the massive oak table. Several other elders sat along the sides, all wearing dark robes woven with scale patterns that marked their high status in the Dragon-born hierarchy. Their eyes locked onto me, sharp as hawks.
Kile and Journey stood to Lord Morgan's right. Journey leaned against Kile, looking pale and fragile, as if she were the one suffering a great injustice.
The moment I stepped into the chamber, the sheer weight of their collective stares pressed down on me. I walked calmly to the center of the room and offered a perfect, measured curtsy. I did not let a single tremor show in my hands.
Lord Morgan cleared his throat. His voice boomed through the quiet room. "Cassie Stein. I assume Kile has explained the situation to you. For the harmony of the family, and... for the happiness of Lady Journey, we expect you to look at the bigger picture."
Another elder chimed in, his tone dripping with condescension. "Indeed. For a Dragonless orphan like you to become a lesser consort of House Golden is already an immense honor. Do not be ungrateful."
Kile spoke up, his impatience leaking through. "Cassie, the elders are all here. Just nod your head, and we can put this behind us."
I lifted my chin and let my gaze sweep across the faces in the room, finally landing on Journey.
Journey immediately shrank back, hiding behind Kile. Her voice trembled perfectly. "Cassie, please do not look at me like that... I am scared. If it were not for me... you and Kile would not be in this mess."
She was doing it again. Her acting was so flawless it was a tragedy she was not on a royal stage.
I sneered internally, but on the outside, I let my face crumble just enough to show hesitation and deep sorrow.
I looked at Lord Morgan, forcing my voice to sound raw and broken. "Chief Elder, I... I need a little time to think."
Lord Morgan frowned, clearly annoyed by the delay.
Journey immediately played the saint. "Kile, do not push her. Let her think about it. I know Cassie has a kind heart."
The word "kind" coming from her mouth felt like a needle scraping against my bones.
Finally, Lord Morgan waved his hand in dismissal. "You have one day."
I walked out of the chamber. I could feel the collective sigh of relief from Kile and Journey burning into my back. They thought I was just struggling with my pride. They thought I would break by tomorrow.
I returned to my room and locked the door. The mask of the heartbroken girl vanished instantly.
I walked to the window and looked out at the distant peaks of the Richmond Mountains. The main seat of Ayden's lineage. My true destination.
I turned to my other maid, Brynn. "Brynn, go out and confirm the rumors regarding House Richmond's current desperation. I need to know if they are still seeking a way to fulfill... the late Lord Ayden's unfinished rites."
Brynn looked confused, but she nodded sharply and left. She was highly capable and never asked unnecessary questions.
I needed a flawless opening. An excuse so perfect that no one could refuse it, allowing me to legally reject this concubine status and claim my place in House Richmond as Ayden's widow.
Kile, Journey, your little play was about to end. My show was just starting. I just needed to keep them convinced that I was entirely broken.
That afternoon, I made sure a few servants saw me sitting alone in the garden, wiping away fake tears, looking utterly devastated. I knew the reports of my misery would reach Kile and Journey quickly, making them drop their guard even further.
By nightfall, Brynn returned. She closed the door tightly behind her.
"Miss," Brynn whispered. "You were right. House Richmond is in a dire position. They are indeed looking for a bride to complete the ghost marriage for Lord Ayden. They need to appease his mother's side of the family, House Hathaway, who are furious that his engagement was never fulfilled before he died."
I stared at the flickering candle on the table. A slow, genuine smile spread across my face.
Cassie POV:
The next morning, I was summoned back to the Elder Council chamber. Same room, same people. But today, I was here to flip the board.
I wore a simple, unadorned dress of high-quality linen. My hair was pinned back flawlessly. There was no trace of sorrow on my face, only a cold, absolute resolve.
Kile looked at me with open irritation, as if silently demanding I hurry up and read my lines. Journey offered me a look of deep sympathy, though the corners of her mouth twitched upward in a suppressed smirk.
Lord Morgan sat at the head of the table, his face stern. "Cassie Stein. A day has passed. What is your decision?"
Every eye in the room locked onto me. To them, I was a helpless Dragonless girl. I had no family, no backing, and no choice but to swallow the dirt they fed me.
I took a deep breath, met Lord Morgan's gaze directly, and spoke in a clear, ringing voice. "I refuse."
The chamber plunged into a dead, suffocating silence.
Kile was the first to snap. He pointed a shaking finger at me, his face flushing red. "Are you insane, Cassie? Do you think you have any other options?"
Lord Morgan's expression darkened. The heavy, oppressive aura of a high-ranking Dragon-born filled the room, making the air thick and hard to breathe.
I ignored Kile entirely. I kept my eyes on the Chief Elder, my voice unwavering. "It is true I have no other options here. But I can choose not to accept this humiliation."
I paused, letting the silence stretch for a heartbeat before dropping the bomb. "I will not be a lesser consort to the Golden branch. However, to preserve the dignity of both our families, I am willing to fulfill my original engagement contract-by marrying into the main House Richmond."
Kile let out a harsh, barking laugh. "Marry into House Richmond? Marry who? My father already has a Duchess. Do you plan to-"
"I will marry Lord Ayden Richmond," I cut him off, biting off every syllable.
The words hit the room like a physical blow.
Journey's fake smile shattered. She stared at me, her eyes wide with shock, looking at me as if I had lost my mind.
Kile's face went from red to a furious purple. "Ayden is dead! Has your grief rotted your brain? You want to be a widow?"
"Marrying a dead hero is better than marrying you and living as a disgrace," I fired back, my voice dripping with ice.
Lord Morgan slammed his hand on the table. The loud crack echoed off the stone walls, but the pure rage in his eyes was suddenly mixed with a calculating gleam.
I pressed my advantage. "I have heard that Duke Richmond is struggling to answer to House Hathaway regarding Lord Ayden's unfulfilled marriage. I, Cassie Stein, may be Dragonless, but my family was once a recognized vassal of the kingdom. My status is sufficient to complete this ghost marriage. It will appease House Hathaway and save Duke Richmond's face."
I laid out the logic piece by piece. With every word, Kile and Journey looked sicker. They had designed this entire trap to crush me under their boots. Instead, I was using their trap to become Kile's legal sister-in-law.
Lord Morgan and the other elders leaned in, whispering furiously among themselves. It was a loss of face for the Golden branch, yes, but it neatly solved a massive political headache for the main House Richmond.
Finally, Lord Morgan looked at me. His eyes were complex, unreadable. "We will forward your proposal to Duke Richmond."
I knew right then. I had won.
I turned and walked out of the chamber. The silence behind me was absolute. I could only imagine the look of pure nausea on Kile and Journey's faces.
By afternoon, the news had exploded across the noble circles of the capital. Everyone was whispering about the mad Cassie Stein, the girl who chose a corpse over a lesser title.
I came out of the parliament hall and refused the carriage arranged by Kile "kindly". I would rather walk back alone, at least when I walk, those hypocritical eyes will not stick to my back all the time.
The shortest way back to the apartment must pass through the lower city-where the lanes are narrow and smoky, pubs and blacksmiths are crowded together, and the air is mixed with the smell of cheap ale and coal ash. I gathered my shawl and quickened my pace, just trying to get out of these dark streets as soon as possible.
When I passed a pub with greasy doors and crooked windows, I inadvertently glanced inside. A man sat at the table near the corner, wearing a rough linen coat, and his dark hood was so low that he almost covered half his face. There was a heavy barley glass in front of him, and his fingers knocked casually on the rim.
Several businessmen at the next table are patting the table and talking about my marriage. Their tone is full of curiosity and ridicule.
And the hooded man seems to be listening.
Just as my footsteps were about to pass the window, I saw a playful smile on his lips. "Ayden Richmond... Cassie Stein... How interesting."
I didn't stop.
The whole city is full of people who are shocked, sneering or watching this. What should a drinker in downtown care about?
I looked back and walked on, leaving the pub and the shadow behind me.
Later that evening, the official raven arrived from House Richmond. They accepted the proposal.
I heard that Kile smashed every piece of porcelain in his room. Journey, for the first time, cried real tears of bitter frustration.
I stood by my window, holding the heavy parchment sealed with the imposing dragon crest of House Richmond.
Father, Mother, I am on my way. The first step of my revenge is complete.
