The sky looked gloomy, as if it were about to rain. People were rushing to get to their destinations but in the frenzy, one woman walked slowly. She seemed to be thinking deeply.
"What should I do? What should I do?"
Tears fell from the corners of her eyes.
The latest family feud had given her mother a heart attack.
All this for a house! A piece of land! Who was her uncle to make demands the way that he did? Why should he have the right to decide the fate of her family?
"I curse you! I curse you!"
Leona Xia fell to her knees, her sobs becoming more and more violent.
She felt a pang in her heart when she thought about how her grandfather had been treated.
"I will have my revenge. Even if I die, my ghost will haunt you!"
With a determined look in her eyes, Leona Xia wiped the tears from her eyes. Then she willed herself to stand up.
Seeing cars whizzing by on the other side of the road, she walked over there slowly and waited for one to hit her. She hoped this would put an end to the pain in her heart.
"I love you. Will you marry me?"
Just as Leona Xia was about to step on the street, a man knelt beside her.
The man was dressed in a black suit and in his hands was a bunch of beautiful, red roses.
Leona Xia, however, tried to ignore him.
"I'm sorry. It's all my fault. I'll love you deeply. I swear it!"
He seemed to sense what she was going to do. The man reached out to Leona Xia and wrapped her in a tight embrace.
Pity and reluctance filled his eyes.
More and more people gathered around them.
"What is happening?"
"Such a dramatic couple! When one decides to commit suicide, the other decides to commit his life to her. Ha!" "Oh, how romantic!"
They heard people's whispers surround them.
Leona Xia looked at him, confused.
"Do I know you?"
"Oh my wife, your illness is getting worse and worse."
The man held her even tighter.
"Sir, I don't know you at all."
Leona Xia tried to remove herself from his embrace but he didn't even budge.
"As long as you promise me you won't commit suicide, I will let you go."
The man whispered these words into her ear.
Leona's eyes widened.
'Why does he care?'
she wondered.
Leona lowered her head and looked at his face. Her heart skipped a beat.
He had such a handsome face.
"Well? You don't want to commit suicide after seeing my handsome face, do you?"
He looked into her eyes teasingly.
Leona blushed after realizing that she stared at him too long.
"Wasn't it lucky that you met me today? Otherwise... You would have been..."
The man let go of her and walked away.
Stunned, Leona stood still and watched the man leave. The people who had been watching them shook their heads in disbelief.
"What the hell is wrong with this girl?"
"Well, who knows? Tsk. Young people nowadays."
Leona frowned. He was crazy!
'What a pity. Such a handsome face for a crazy man!'
It was already six o'clock in the evening when Leona got back to school. When she opened the door of her dormitory and stepped in, she was welcomed by her roommates.
"What are you doing?"
Leona's heart swelled with emotion as her roommates crowded around her affectionately.
"Ha! Leona, don't you go anywhere. I need you in my life!"
"Yes, we will all live a happy life together!"
"Leona, remember me? We are best friends."
They all smiled at her warmly.
Hearing their words, Leona became even more confused.
"What do you mean?"
she asked curiously.
"Come on, don't play dumb with us."
"Girl, you're in today's headlines! It says you are in love with the billionaire, the Lola Group's CEO. It also says that he just proposed to you!"
"Yeah, see! Here. Look at the picture here."
As Leona picked up the newspaper, her mouth dropped open at what she saw. It was a photo of her and the strange man!
It was exactly what had happened earlier! The man in a black suit, holding a bunch of red roses, knelt on the ground to propose to her!
"Oh my God! Why is it on the newspaper?"
Leona panicked.
She looked at every one of her roommates' faces and saw that they all had tentative smiles.
Before this day, they were never really nice to her. They used to bully her and exclude her from their activities. However, it seemed like they suddenly changed.
"Leona, dear Leona, you will invite us to dinner, won't you?"
"Yes! Your boyfriend is so rich. Surely money won't be an issue for you!"
They suddenly treated Leona like a princess.
Bile crawled up her throat as disgust began to settle in her stomach.
She thought about how she had been mistreated just because she was poor. She might have been poor but she had grit and ambition. She knew that she would make it far someday.
That was why she stayed silent through all the nasty little tricks that they had played on her and pretended not to hear them ridiculing her.
Sure, her heart hurt, but she never dared to let them see.
She let her pain and anger simmer and she buried them deep inside. Leona knew better than to offend those who were rich and powerful. Money made people reckless. There was no telling what they would do to her.
"What the hell is going on?" Leona felt like she was in a movie. She wondered about what would happen next. Her head hurt as she thought. She needed to escape again.
She rushed out of the dormitory and ran out of the school.
As soon as she stepped foot out of the campus, she was swarmed by reporters and photographers. They crowded around her, which made her chest feel tighter. Her head began to swim.
"Are you all crazy?"
She tried to shield her face with her arms.
Fighting her way through the frenzy, Leona ran like mad.
"Stay away from me!" she yelled.
"What the hell is happening?"
Suddenly, an expensive-looking black car stopped in front of her and blocked her way.
"Ah!"
Before Leona could say anything more, the car door opened. An arm reached out to grab her, pulling her inside the car. The door shut as the car sped away.
"Let me go! Let me go!"
Suddenly, Leona felt a cloth cover her face. Everything went black.
Her eyelids fluttered open after a while. As her vision adjusted, she found herself in an unfamiliar room. When she looked out the window, she saw that it was already dark. Then she glanced at the alarm clock beside her.
"Oh my God! It's already three o'clock in the morning!"
Leona tried to get out of the bed but she felt sore all over. Her head spun and her lower body throbbed.
"Oh my God! What happened?"
She reached for the lights. When she switched them on, she saw a darkened bloodstain in the middle of the bed. Her mouth dropped open. 'Have I been violated?' she thought.
"What happened? Why can't I remember anything?"
Leona shook her head.
Suddenly, she heard the sound of running water coming from the bathroom.
A few moments later, the door opened and a handsome man walked out.
"Shame on you!"
Leona yelled, covering her face. She felt ashamed seeing a half-naked man come out from the shower.
"I'm wearing a towel! Besides, you are my wife. You have nothing to worry about!"
He went straight to the bedside and touched her face with his slender fingers.
Leona raised her head and looked into his eyes. They looked like stars up in the night sky!
'What beautiful eyes!'
Leona thought to herself.
"Well? Don't you think your husband is so handsome?"
"My... My what?"
Leona's head suddenly throbbed.
"Silly girl, you agreed to my proposal! You are my wife now."
"What?! What proposal?"
Leona's eyes widened in shock.
"I asked you to marry me and you said yes! I even have the marriage certificate to prove it. Do you want to see?"
The man took out two red envelopes from the bedside table beside him and handed them to Leona.
She opened the envelopes and read the papers inside.
'They're actual marriage certificates!'
Leona's head started to throb even more.
"Louis Lu, Leona Xia,"
she murmured. Those were the names written on the papers.
"How... How did you get these marriage certificates?"
she asked.
However, instead of answering her, the man just took her into his arms and held her close.
"Oh, my wife. All will be revealed to you soon."
He gave a soft chuckle. Leona felt nervous. It was obvious he was hiding something from her.
Then he held onto her more tightly.
Her warmth seeped into his skin.
He felt aroused, but decided to control himself. 'Patience,' he thought.
He had dreamt of this moment for a long time. Actually, he had always loved her, but she never knew. She was silly, even as a child. He couldn't believe she could not remember who he was.
His heart was hit by a bitter pang.
"Leona, you will remember me one day,"
he whispered. He looked at her face and smiled. How beautiful she was!
"Louis... Lu?"
Meanwhile, Leona was lost in her own thoughts.
How the hell did one of the world's most powerful men know who she was?
