"Jason?" Mia called the moment she got into the house but she didn't get any response. She wondered if nobody was home but then she heard noise coming from upstairs which meant two things: either Jason was ignoring her or the TV was too loud. But then she remembered that he hadn't installed a TV in his room. She made her way slowly up the stairs.
"Jason," she called out again, but still she got no response.
As Mia drew closer to Jason's room, the noise grew louder and it was clear enough for her to make out what was happening. Her heart pounded faster in her chest as she stood in front of the door. Her fingers were trembling as she put them on the door's knob. She didn't have the courage to open the door. So she turned back around and walked away, Her face soaked with tears.
She walked back down to the living room and sat there with her face in her hands. The air around her was taut and tight and it felt like being in Jason's house was constricting her airflow. She grabbed her purse and was about to leave when she heard someone call her name. She turned around to see who it was and saw Jason with a towel draped around his waist.
"Mia, you didn't tell me that you were coming." He said as he approached her.
Mia eyed him with disgust. "Have you been cheating on me?!" Mia yelled at him.
"You're crying!" Jason said, ignoring her question, he stretched his hand to wipe the tears from her cheeks but she slapped his hand angrily away.
"Tell me, you bastard. Have you been cheating on me?" She intoned, her voice teary.
Jason pinched the bridge of his nose before he responded. "I'm sorry..."
"So you've been sleeping with someone else?" Mia cut him off.
"Yes, I did." He said. "I did sleep with someone else."
Mia stood frozen in disbelief as the words echoed in her mind. She hadn't expected him to admit it outrightly.
The sting of betrayal cut through her like a knife, leaving her heart shattered into a million pieces. She had never imagined that her boyfriend, Jason, would betray her in such a cruel and callous manner.
Another bout of tears streamed down Mia's cheeks as she watched Jason's expression, a mix of guilt and regret, morph into a mask of indifference. Anger boiled within her, but beneath it lay a deep well of hurt and sorrow.
"I can't believe you would do this to me," Mia whispered, her voice trembling with emotion.
Jason's response was hollow, his apology ringing empty in Mia's ears. "I'm sorry, Mia. It was a mistake. It meant nothing."
But to Mia, those words offered little solace. The trust she had placed in Jason had been shattered, and the pain of his betrayal cut deeper than any physical wound.
Without another word, Mia turned and fled from Jason's apartment, her heart heavy with sorrow and rage. She stumbled blindly through the streets, her mind consumed by thoughts of revenge.
It was then that Mia made a vow to herself: she would make Jason and the woman he had betrayed her with pay for their betrayal. She would show them the same pain and heartache they had inflicted upon her.
The burning desire for revenge was all that clouded Mia's head. She wiped her tears as she took off her dress which was soaked with tears. Dumping the cloth into her laundry basket, She headed for the bathroom.
She let the water cascade down her body as she burst into another round of tears. She struggled to hold back her tears but the thought of Jason admitting to what he had done only propelled the tears.
She turned the shower's knob anticlockwise and headed out. She dried herself when she heard her phone starting to buzz. She looked at the phone and read the messages from the notification screen. It was Jason texting her.
She blocked his number straight up. She didn't want to have anything to do with that cheating bastard.
In the days that followed, Mia couldn't sleep right, all that clouded her thoughts was how to take revenge on Jason. She thought she could get over him but she couldn't, rather she drank herself to stupor. One night, as she was scrolling through the internet, a notification popped up on the screen, she tapped on it and realized that it was Jason's social media profile. He had used the picture of the girl he had cheated on Mia with as his display picture.
Mia felt rage boil inside of her. She turned off the phone and held it in her hand until the phone's screen almost cracked.
"I'm going to make that bastard pay for the pain and shame he's caused me." Hate seethed through every word as she spoke.
Mia began doing her findings, she knew that her mind wouldn't be at peace if she didn't take revenge. She began to stalk Jason and monitor his every move. She found out he was going to be out of the country for two weeks. She figured it was time to make her move.
She got her keys and rushed out of the house. When she got into the streets, she flagged down a taxi and instructed the driver on where to take her to. The vehicle stopped in front of a white mansion. She rolled down the window and looked at the picture she had gotten from the internet of Jason's father's house. It was exactly the same. She alighted the car and was about to make her way to the house when the driver called her back.
"Hey ma'am, you haven't paid me yet." He said as he stretched his hand out.
Mia turned back immediately. She slapped her forehead slightly as she opened her purse, brought out a dollar note, and handed it to me.
"I'm sorry about that." She apologized. "you can keep the change."
The man eyed her closely before kickstarting the engine and driving away.
Mia tried to peep through the gate but there was nothing much to see. The gates were jammed tightly against the wall. She scanned the gate, looking for an entrance but the whole gate was enclosed. She tried knocking on it but no sound came out which baffled her.
She was about to push through the gate when she heard a voice that made her stop abruptly in her tracks.
"Who are you?"
Mia sought for where the voice came from.
"I said who are you?" The voice came again.
"My..my name is Mia and I'm here to see Mr. Logan."
"Mr. Jason is not in." The voice said.
"No, no I'm here to see his father. I have an important appointment with him."
"I'm sorry madam but he didn't tell me anything about it so I cannot let you in."
Mia grounded her teeth in frustration. She thought of how she was going to get in if the security wouldn't even let her move past the gate.
With anger seething in her veins, she turned around and walked away. She resumed work late and had to lie to her boss that her mother fainted that morning and she had to take her to the hospital.
"Phew," she heaved and wiped an invisible drop of sweat from her forehead when her boss had bought her tale. She rushed to her computer and turned it on. She went straight to Jason's page and nestled there till the next thirty minutes.
"Mia?"
Mia had been so engrossed in what she was doing that she couldn't hear her name being called.
She almost jumped out of her skin when a hand rested on her shoulder. She turned around immediately and saw that it was her co-worker and closest friend, Mary.
"Are you trying to give me a heart attack?" Mia said, clutching her chest.
"I've been standing here and calling your name for the past ten minutes, but you couldn't hear me," Mary said. She was a tall and slender woman with brown hair and green eyes. She was dressed in a smart black pantsuit, her long hair pulled back in a neat bun.
Mia's cheeks flushed in embarrassment. "I didn't hear." She said in a low tone and turned to face her computer.
"You've been acting funny lately. Tell me what the matter is." Mary said.
With Mia's eyes still glued to the computer screen she muffled subconsciously. "nothing,"
"Mia, you have to tell me what going on, I'm hearing rumors about you. You even came in late today, you never come to work late so tell me what the problem is," Mary intoned.
Mia spun her chair around to face Mary.
"What kind of rumor?" She asked, her brows furrowed.
"That you're having some issues and you don't want to share it with anyone," Mary told her.
"I and Jason broke up." She said without hesitation and immediately the words came out, tears threatened to fall down her eyes. When she couldn't hold it back in anymore, she let the tears cascade down her cheeks.
"Oh my..." Mary gasped. "when was that?"
"Last week," Mia choked on her tears as she spoke. She grabbed her bag, opened it, and took out her handkerchief. She wiped her face with it while Mary stared at her with a pitiful look in her eyes.
"I'm so sorry about you two, Mia. What happened, I mean Why'd you two break up?" Mary asked as she crouched to Mia's level in order to console her.
"I caught him cheating and when I confronted him about it, he...he.. admitted to it." As Mia recounted that uneventful day, the urge and resolve to take revenge grew stronger.
"I'm so sorry about that, Mia." Mary's voice came again.
"No, it's not your fault. I was stupid not to realize that Jason had been playing me all along. I'm so going to make him pay."
"Easy now. You just have to let it slide."
Mia snapped her head up immediately. "Did you just say I should let it slide?"
"I was with that bastard for seven years. Seven good years Mary," Mia held up her fingers in front of Mia, indicating the number seven.
"....and this how he repays me for loving him with all my heart. If you've ever been in love, you'll understand me better."
Mary stood from her crouched position. "Hey c'mon don't try to gaslight me just because I'm trying to make you feel better," Mary said. She knew Mia was right. At thirty two, she had had four failed marriages already and was still looking to get married again.
"I'm sorry," Mia sniffed, realizing that she might have been too hard on Mary.
"It's okay. What do you say we chill at my place this evening to relieve you? You look stressed out." Mary said.
Mia pinched the bridge of her nose as she realized that the lack of sleep and too to think about had taken a huge toll on her and was now evident in her appearance.
"Yeah, I guess I need to take a break," Mia said but then her phone buzzed to indicate that she had a notification message. She took her phone and checked the message, after a while of looking at her phone, she looked back up at Mary and said: "On second thought, I have where to be tonight maybe we can reschedule for some other time."
Mary's eyes bulged in shock, "But you just agreed to come over, why the sudden change of mind."
"I'm sorry but where I need to be tonight is very important," Mia responded with an apologetic look on her face.
"If you say so," Mary shrugged. "Just don't try to think about Jason too much." And with that, she walked away.
Mia's attention went back to her phone to return the text message she had received.
Later that evening, the sky looked as if it might have a heavy downpour, but Mia didn't care as she made her way out of the house without an umbrella or anything else to protect her from the rain in case it started. She took out her phone to check the address of where she was headed to. Satisfied with the information, she made her way across the street where she flagged down a taxi.
She got to the hotel just in time before the party started. She went to the back quickly and got changed. She made her way inside the hotel when a bald, middle aged man walked up to her with a clipboard in hand.
"Are you Mia Anderson?" The man said.
"Yes I am," Mia responded nervously.
"You're ten minutes late." The man bellowed.
Mia looked around clueless, "But the party hasn't even started yet."
"I said you're ten minutes late. Did you see the agreed time that was sent to your email? If you don't want to get sent home, you better learn how to stick to the agreement." The man said and walked away.
Mia was boiling with rage as to why the man would talk to her like that. All eyes had turned to look at her as she stood there, her cheeks flushed heavily with embarrassment. She tried to calm her insides down before she picked up herself and made her way into the kitchen section.
If Jason hadn't been so stupid enough not to cheat on her, maybe she would not have been here trying to seek revenge and thereby receiving this magnitude of insults.
"Hey, you." Someone called to her when she was in the kitchen. She spun around to where the direction of the voice came from.
"What's the name?" A woman with a bushy ponytail who looked impatient with an apron tied around her waist said to her.
"Mia," she responded.
"Okay, Maya. You'll be in charge of serving drinks to Mr. Logan's table. And make sure you don't do anything funny, Mr. Logan is one of our most respectable customers."
"Yes madam," Mia responded, trying to sound as sheepish as possible.
"Call me Steph, here's an apron for you. Start preparing the drinks, and remember to take the apron off when you start serving the drinks." The woman said and threw an apron her way. Mia caught it before it fell to the floor.
In less than twenty minutes, the hotel lobby which was large enough to fit in five hundred people was ready. Mia marveled at how beautifully the lobby had been decorated.
The hotel lobby was decorated with the utmost care and attention to detail, creating an exquisite and elegant atmosphere for the party. The centerpieces were made of fresh flowers, arranged in tall, crystal vases. The lighting was soft and flattering, and the colors were carefully chosen to complement the decor. The furniture was comfortable and inviting, with plush sofas and armchairs providing plenty of seating for guests.
As guests entered the lobby, they were greeted by a staff member who took their coats and offered them a flute of champagne. They were then escorted to the main hall, where a live band was playing jazz music.
As Mia was still dazzled in admiration, she saw Mr. Logan walk in with his entourage. It seemed like time stopped for a moment as she took in sight of him.
He dressed in a perfectly tailored suit and walked confidently into the lobby. His silver hair was neatly combed, and his expensive cologne reached Mia's nose and clouded her senses. His shoes were polished to a gleaming shine, and his silk tie was perfectly knotted.
As he entered the room, he exuded an air of sophistication and wealth. He carried himself with a certain dignity and grace, and his every gesture exuded confidence and power. He was the epitome of success, and his presence commanded respect.
"What are you still drooling at? Get to work!" Steph's voice jolted her back to reality.
Mia shook her head slightly as she stared at the drinks in front of her. She felt her heart sank. This was the moment she had been preparing for. She placed the drinks carefully in the trolley along with the wine bottle.
She wheeled it over to Mr Logan's table, her heart pounding vigorously against her chest. She feigned a calm composure as she got to the table, greeted everyone first, and began to serve the drinks. She stole glances occasionally at Mr Logan who was chattering wholeheartedly with his colleagues.
She bowed her head slightly as she walked away to get more wines as they had ordered. She came back to the table and started to pour more drinks. Mia's heart sank when she thought she saw Mr Logan eyeing her closely or must it have been her imagination. She hoped it wasn't.
"Hey young lady, come pour me more drinks." Mia thought her heart would jump out of her tin cage when she heard Mr Logan address her.
"Yes sir." She said and hurried down to where he sat with the wine glass in hand. She poured the wine into his glass. As she stood there waiting for another command, she thought of how to add the substance she had gotten earlier from Mary into Mr Logan's drink.
She grew increasingly agitated. Mr. Logan had stopped demanding for more drinks. Mia prayed desperately inwardly for him to ask for another drink, just one more and her plan would be executed, but she thought of the numerous eyes that were watching her. She was sure that Steph's eyes most especially never left her body.
Mia's frustration doubled as people were starting to retire to their hotel rooms and she knew that Mr Logan was soon to join them.
Mia's eyes almost grew teary when Mr Logan stood from his chair.
"Oh no!" She cried inwardly. All her efforts were going down the drain. Her cheeks were flushed with rage when she realized that all the facade she had put up was all for nothing. She had done her findings and realized that the most exquisite hotel in the country was short staffed, and the top guns had organized a big party to be held there. When Mia realised that Jason's father, Mr Logan was going to attend, she hurriedly wrote a mail to them asking to be hired for the night as a wine server.
Now she had gotten in, and the major reason why she had gotten in was because of Mr Logan, and now the opportunity was going to slip by her fingers.
"Hey, you,"
Mia turned around. It was Mr Logan.
"Bring these drinks to my room upstairs. I can't let such fine drinks go to waste." He said and walked out.
Mia's heart leaped for joy. It felt like she wanted to give Mr Logan a hug at that moment. With a smile dancing on her face, she quickly cleared the empty glasses from the table as all the people that were seated round the table had left already.
