Marriage Pact

Author: : Tanny-precious
Genre: Billionaires
22 years old Zara Klein was forced to marry, and produce an heir for 41-year-old Kai Adler, who has three months left to live; to save her father's company from bankruptcy. She had to keep up with Kai's inhumane treatment, got pregnant with his child and quietly anticipated his death. But their lives took a drastic turn when Kai miraculously got cured of his illness.

Chapter 1 1

ZARA'S POV

My father and I sat in the back seat of his car, parked inside Standesamt Mitte in Berlin, awaiting the arrival of the Adlers. The marriage registration was scheduled for 15:00, and it was already 14:00.

"There must be other ways of saving the company; do I have to do this?" I turned to my father, who had been silent since our arrival.

He sighed heavily, "That's not the only issue; you'll be marrying a man old enough to be your uncle," he grasped my hands, his expression grave as he met my gaze, "But desperate times call for desperate measures, Zara. This marriage is our only option to avoid bankruptcy and homelessness."

Tears began streaming down my cheeks as the weight of the situation sunk in. "But why me?" I protested softly. "What about Lena? She's older; she could handle this much better than me."

His expression suddenly hardened, and he dropped my hand, signalling my breach of an unspoken line.

"You, Zara, know exactly why. Your sister is instrumental to the company," he countered sternly, "And frankly, I don't trust anyone else with this-not even you."

His words stung, revealing the harsh truth: I was nothing more than a sacrificial lamb protecting the favoured child.

"Zara, your sister has sacrificed a lot for us; now it's your turn to contribute. Fulfill this obligation by marrying him. It won't be for long; he's not expected to live much longer, and once it's over, you'll have your freedom. Lena will take over as CEO, and you'll be promoted to managing director."

I sank deeper into the seat, a sense of resignation washing over me as I exhaled deeply, closing my eyes to the bleak reality.

Our tense silence was broken when Lena joined us in the car, her presence a stark contrast to the stifling atmosphere. "They're here," my father announced as two cars pulled up alongside ours. We stepped out to meet them.

Kai's mother emerged from the first vehicle, her youthful vigour belying her age. Kai exited the second car, dressed impeccably in an all-white suit.

As we approached, Mrs. Adler embraced me warmly and then introduced me to Kai. Despite months of arrangement discussions, this was our first actual meeting.

Standing next to him, my 5'6" stature felt particularly short. He was impressively built, with medium-toned, luminous skin that made his well-styled black hair and striking features stand out even more.

His chiselled jaw, strong nose, and well-defined lips could easily rival classical sculptures. Despite being 41, his presence was commanding, yet there was an undeniable gentleness in his eyes.

"Are you ready?" he asked, his green eyes piercing into my amber ones with an intensity that both unnerved and captivated me.

"Uh, yes, yes," I stuttered, momentarily lost in his gaze, which contrasted so sharply with the ruthless businessman reputation that preceded him.

As we proceeded with the marriage registration and exchanged rings, I was taken aback by his unexpected kindness and gentility, which belied his fierce public persona.

After the ceremony, I turned to my sister first, embracing her tightly. "I'm sorry you had to go through this. It's my fault for not keeping a tighter rein on the company's finances," she whispered, tears streaming down her face.

I reassured her as I wiped away her tears, "We agreed to this because Mrs Adler promised significant financial support if one of us marries her son and bears his child before his impending death. Focus on the company and ensure my sacrifice counts for something. He seems more personable than the rumours suggested, so perhaps these next few months won't be as dreadful as we feared."

Returning her embrace, she sobbed, "I'm going to miss you so much."

"I'll miss you too," I whispered back, our bond sealed by shared adversity since our mother's early departure left us to navigate our father's cold pragmatism and the burdens of family expectations.

As Kai departed to attend to business, Madam Tess, the housekeeper, showed me to my room-a well-appointed space that would serve as my sanctuary or cage, depending on how one viewed it. Left alone, I dined by myself, Kai's absence extending well into the evening.

Later, as I lay reading, Madam Tess informed me of Kai's return, requesting my presence in his room-a summons that set my nerves on edge. "Why does he want to see me in his room?" I pondered aloud.

"Perhaps he just wishes to speak," I reassured myself, though the fluttering in my stomach suggested otherwise.

With a mixture of apprehension and a need to assert some control, I entered his room without knocking, only to find Kai shirtless, an unexpected sight that halted me in my tracks.

"Oh my God, I am so sorry. I should have knocked," I stammered, turning to leave.

"No, it's fine, come in," he said calmly, stopping me.

As I turned back, our eyes met, and the world around us seemed to pause. In a moment that felt both reckless and inevitable, he drew me close, his lips meeting mine in a kiss that was surprisingly tender yet desperate.

The connection was instantaneous, overwhelming my senses as he lifted me effortlessly, carrying me to the bed where passion and reservation blurred in a dance as old as time.

His actions spoke of a man who knew this might be his last chance at intimacy, his urgency underscored by the raw honesty of our situation.

As he undressed us both, his touch was paradoxically gentle, a contrast to the forceful life he was known to lead. When he entered me, the initial pain gave way to a rush of pleasure that overwhelmed all thoughts of duty and consequence.

Together, we reached a crescendo, a moment of escape from the roles we were forced to play, only to be shattered by his subsequent withdrawal and cold dismissal.

"Get out of my room," he ordered abruptly, his earlier warmth replaced by an icy detachment.

"Excuse me?" I said, my voice a mix of confusion and indignity as I clutched the sheet to my chest.

"You heard me. Get out," he repeated, his tone leaving no room for discussion.

As I left his room, the complex layers of our encounter left me reeling-trapped in a marriage that was both a contract and a confrontation with unexpected depths of emotion.

Chapter 2 2

ZARA'S POV

A knock on my bedroom door woke me up. I got up to open the door, and it was Madam Tess and a young maid who held a tray of food in her hands.

"Good morning Ma'am," they both greeted.

"Good morning," I replied.

"Your breakfast is here," Madam Tess said, motioning to the tray.

"Please take it back, I'm not hungry, " I replied.

"You have to eat, Ma'am; Mr Adler won't be happy if he finds out that you refused to eat." she protested.

"What does his happiness have to do with my appetite?" I countered.

"My dear, you don't want to evoke Mr Adler's anger, it won't do you any good. Just do yourself and everyone else a favour by doing as you are told and following his rules," she pleaded with concern in her eyes.

"I don't care what he does, he has no right to tell me what to do or order me around." I closed the door and went back to bed ignoring her pleading. I was still angry at the way Kai treated me last night and felt stupid for thinking he was different from the rumours. I cried myself to sleep last night after the encounter, with the thought of the rest of my days with him.

I jerked up at the sound of the door slamming open, revealing Kai whose expression was a mix of anger and frustration.

"Get up" he barked. "We are having breakfast together."

I sat up, my heart pounding. "I don't want to."

He marched over, gripped my hands firmly and pulled me out of bed. "I don't care what you want, Zara, you do not defy my orders."

I pulled my arm free, glaring at him. " I am not your puppet, Kai. I won't be bossed around and treated like a possession. I demand you treat me with respect."

"Respect? He leaned in close, his hot breath sending shivers down my spine as it grazed my ear. "Your father exchanged you for money and you think you deserve respect." He laughed. "You are mine, Zara, you are whatever I say you are. Now do as I say and get dressed.

The tension was palpable at breakfast. Madam Tess moved with subdued efficiency, setting out the meal and pouring coffee, while Kai's eyes remained steadily fixed on mine, his attention unnervingly intense.

"Eat," he commanded, his voice low and threatening

"I'm not hungry," I said glaring at him.

"Either way, you have to eat; we don't want you looking sick, do we?"

I toyed with the food, with my appetite non-existent. "What's the use of this act, Kai, why are we putting on this facade?"

Kai's fork clattered on his plate. " The point is to maintain control. You agreed to marry me, Zara. You'll play your part.

I pushed my plate away; resentment smouldered in my heart, fueling my resistance. "And what about my part? Do I get any say in this?"

Kai's eyes narrowed. " Your part is to do as you're told. End of discussion.

The rest of the meal passed in silence, the tension between us palpable. When I finally rose to leave, Kai grabbed my wrist.

" Don't ever defy me again, Zara," he warned, his grip tightening. "You won't like the consequences."

I jerked my hand loose, making a hasty exit from the living room. The memory of his grip lingered, a ghostly pressure on my skin long after I'd left the room.

As the day wore on, I gravitated towards the living room, craving a comforting sense of stability and normal life. Kai was there, seated on the couch, a glass of whiskey in his hand.

It was a Saturday, he didn't go to his office.

"You are not allowed in here," he said without looking up.

"It's a free house, Kai," I retorted, crossing my arms. "I can go wherever I want."

He set his glass down with a thud. "Not in my house, you don't. You are confined to your room and the garden unless I call for you."

I felt my temper flare. "This is ridiculous! I'm not a prisoner."

Kai Rose, his height imposing. "You are whatever I say you are, Zara. If I say you are confined, you are confined. Now, get out of my sight."

I took a step back, my heart pounding. "You can't control every aspect of my life."

He took a step forward, closing the distance between us. "Watch me."

I felt a chill run down my spine. "This isn't a marriage. It's a prison.

Kai's expression softened for a moment, then hardened again. "You walked into this yourself, your father may have forced you, but I didn't. Remember that."

I turned and fled the room, the walls of the house closing in around me. I couldn't escape from him, I had to endure this for the rest of the months he had left to live.

Later that night, I was in my bedroom, hoping for some peace. Kai came in without knocking, his face a mask of cold fury.

I stood with my arms crossed, glaring at him. "What do you want?"

He moved closer to me, his presence suffocating me with its intensity. "Your father signed a contract, Zara, you agreed to this. You have to fulfil your end."

I took a step back, my voice trembling. "I won't be your broodmare."

He grabbed my waist, pulling me close to him. "You'll do whatever it takes to save your family's company and if that means being a broodmare, then so be it."

I tried to pull away, but his grip was like an iron. "And if I refuse? You will face the bitter end of a lineage that dies with you." I snarled.

His eyes darkened, a cruel smile playing on his lips. "Then your family loses everything and ends up on the street. Do you want that on your conscience?

With a broken heart, I stared at him. "You're a monster."

He stroked my cheek with a tender yet ominous touch. "Remember that next time you think about defying me."

Kai's grip tightened for a moment as his phone rang before he shoved me away. "Spare me the hassle of stripping you bare, be naked and waiting when I return."

I fell on the bed, tears streaming down my face as Kai walked out leaving me in the room, suffocating under the weight of my choices.

My mind raced with a mix of emotions, including the twisted desire to grab a knife and end his life. But then I paused, reflecting on the futility of it all; 'Why trade my life for his by committing murder, when his time is already running out.' I thought. No, I should be patient and let the inevitable happen – his death was a matter of time, and I just needed to wait.

A fate worse than hell is what he deserved. I yearned for a place of even greater suffering, where he'd suffered ceaselessly. May he rot in an abyss of unrelenting agony, forever in a living nightmare, with no escape from the misery he's earned.

Chapter 3 3

KAI'S POV

The room was dim, illuminated only by the glow of my laptop screen. I sat at my desk surrounded by piles of medical journals and printed articles. I stared at the email from Dr. Richardson in London, my pulse quickened as I read the words again.

** Mr Adler, the surgery has a 30% chance

of success. However, if you don't undergo

the procedure soon, it will be too late. The

tumour is aggressive, and immediate

action is required. Please consider the

risk and make your decision swiftly.**

My phone rang. It was my friend and the managing director of my company, Ethan.

"Hello," I said, answering the call calmly.

"I just found out that you didn't come to your office today. Did something happen?" Ethan asked, his voice laced with concern.

"No, everything's fine, I just needed some rest," I responded soothingly, trying to ease his worry.

"All right. I have some reports to hand over to you personally. So, I'll see you at your house later today," Ethan said, with his tone firm.

"Uhm, Ethan, I might fly to London soon," I ventured, my voice hesitant.

"Don't tell me you are going for the surgery," Ethan exclaimed, alarm creeping into his voice.

"I am. Dr Richardson sent another email, stating that if I don't make my decision swiftly, it will be too late to undergo any surgery," I explained, my tone resolute

"Kai, this is too risky, you still have two months left. What if the surgery fails and you die?" Ethan warned, his voice stern.

"And what if it's a success and I survive?" I countered, my voice firm.

"We'll never know if I don't give it a trial. My death is inevitable anyway, so it wouldn't make any difference if I died from the surgery or died in the next two months. Zara just has to get pregnant before I leave; it's the only way to secure my family's future," I said with a determined tone.

"Please, think about this again, before making any impulsive choices." Ethan urged, his voice softening before he hung up the call.

A 30% chance, it wasn't much, but it was all I had. I knew the odds and understood the risks, but the thought of leaving everything behind, especially now, was unbearable. I had spent all my life holding up my father's legacy in the business world and never gave relationships or marriage a chance. As the only child, I needed to secure an heir, a part of me who would live on if the worst happened.

I glanced at the wedding photo on my desk, a grim reminder of the circumstances that brought Zara and me together. She despised me, and I couldn't blame her; I had treated her cruelly. But it was needed; I had to maintain control and not let her see my condition as a weakness or else she might take advantage of it.

"Kai, we have news." My mum's voice, filled with unusual excitement, reached my ears, followed by the sound of footsteps in the hallway.

I quickly closed my laptop and hurried to the door as it swung open. I met my mother and Zara at the entrance; I walked out and closed the door behind me to prevent them from entering the room.

"Kai," my mother began. "We just got back from the hospital and Zara is two weeks pregnant."

For a moment, relief flooded through me, but it was quickly replaced by urgency. The doctor's words echoed in my mind. 'Immediate action is required.'

"That's wonderful news," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.

Zara looked at me, her expression void of any emotion. "Congratulations," she said flatly.

I turned and walked back into the room. "Excuse me, I need to make a phone call," I said over my shoulders and headed to my desk.

Back at my desk, I dialled Dr Richardson's number; it rang twice before he answered.

"Dr Richardson, it's Kai Adler. I want to schedule the surgery for tomorrow."

"Tomorrow?" He repeated, sounding taken aback. "Are you sure, Mr Adler? This is a major decision."

"I'm sure. I'll be on a flight to London tonight."

There was a pause. "Very well, I'll inform the team. And Mr Adler, please remember the risks."

"I understand," I replied curtly before hanging up.

I quickly booked the flight and then called for the family lawyer to come over immediately.

Some documents need to be signed and things to be put in order. If anything happened to me, I needed to ensure that my family wouldn't take any legal action against the hospital or Dr Richardson.

By the time everything was set, it was already sunset. I packed a small bag, with just my essentials. I went downstairs to meet my mother, talking to Zara and Madam Tess, and they were listening to her quietly. They looked up as I approached.

"I have to leave for London," I announced, keeping my tone casual. "Business meeting. I'll be back in a few days."

Zara's eyes lit up for the first time in weeks, but not with concern-she was happy.

"So suddenly?" she said, barely concealing her relief. "You just found out about the pregnancy."

I forced a smile. "The timing isn't ideal, but the meeting is crucial."

My mother nodded. "Take care, Kai. And hurry back." She moved close to me and held my hand. "Always remember to take your medications. Dr Carter is trying his best to find a cure for your illness, and I also won't stop praying for a miracle."

My gaze shifted to Zara and I caught her rolling her eyes at my mother's words. 'She would probably be the happiest person in the world if I don't make it back.'

Acting unbothered by Zara's actions. I kissed my mother on the cheek. "I'll be back soon," I reassured her.

I turned to Zara, my voice softening for a moment. "Take care of yourself and the baby."

Zara didn't bother to hide her indifference. "Sure, whatever you say."

With that, I left the house and headed to the airport. As the plane took off, I stared out the window, the city lights below growing smaller. I had done what I needed to do, now it was up to fate.

In the quiet of the flight, I allowed myself to hope for survival. But deep down, I knew I had made my peace with whatever outcome awaited me in London
