Chapter 1 The Night Everything Changed

The streets were quiet that night. Too quiet.

Aria Hale walked fast, clutching the strap of her old bag as cold air brushed against her cheeks. She had worked late again at the diner, wiping down tables until her wrists ached. The extra pay would help with the bills at home, but it left her tired, hungry, and wishing for a warm bed.

The route home was always the same. Past the closed bookstore, past the church with its crooked cross, three blocks to the small apartment she shared with her mother. Familiar. Safe.

Or at least, it used to feel that way.

Tonight, something felt wrong. The air was heavy, and the streets were empty. Too empty. Even the usual hum of the city felt far away.

She glanced behind her. No one.

"Stop it, Aria," she muttered. "You're just tired."

Her phone buzzed. A message from her mother: Don't stay up too late. Lock the door.

A small smile tugged at her lips. She texted back: Almost home. Love you.

She put her phone away and froze.

A sound. Faint. Like a shoe scraping wet pavement.

Her heart skipped. "Hello?" she called out, trying to sound brave.

No answer.

She picked up her pace. The shortcut alley near the church was just ahead. It saved her a few minutes every night. Tonight, her gut told her to stay on the main road. But her feet turned into the alley anyway.

Halfway through, the streetlight at the other end flickered and went dark.

Aria stopped breathing for a moment. The air felt colder now, and her skin prickled.

Another sound. A soft step.

She spun around. A figure was standing there. Tall. Still. Wrong.

His coat was dark, his hood low, but his eyes glowed faintly red, like dying embers.

"Out late, aren't you?" he said, voice smooth and quiet.

Her throat went dry. "I... I don't have anything you want," she said quickly. "Take my bag."

He smiled. It was not a kind smile. "I'm not here for your bag."

Before she could move, he was in front of her, faster than her eyes could follow. His hand clamped over her mouth, ice cold and strong.

"I promise," he whispered near her ear, "this won't take long."

Pain stabbed into her neck. Sharp. Burning. Her whole body jolted as fire rushed through her veins. Her fingers clawed at his arm, but her strength was slipping away.

He's drinking my blood.

Her vision blurred. Her heartbeat thundered and slowed. She felt herself falling, until a roar ripped through the night.

It was not a man's voice. And it was not human.

The stranger hissed and let her go. Aria stumbled to the ground, her hands wet with her own blood.

Something moved at the mouth of the alley. Big, fast, and glowing with golden eyes. A wolf. Massive. Its fur silver gray, its teeth bared.

The man snarled. The wolf lunged.

They clashed in a blur of claws and fangs. Shadows tangled in the dark, too fast for her to follow.

Aria crawled back, heart pounding. Run, her mind screamed, but her body would not listen.

The wolf turned toward her. Its golden eyes locked on hers. It was huge, powerful, terrifying... and yet, for some reason, she did not scream.

It stepped closer and pressed its muzzle against her shoulder. Heat spread through her skin, crawling deep into her bones like fire.

She gasped as something burned into her, like a mark. A bond.

Then a rough voice, deep and certain, rumbled in her mind:

"Mine."

Before she could even understand, another voice cut through the dark, cold and sharp:

"She's mine."

The world spun. The last thing she saw was the silver wolf and the pale man colliding again, the alley filling with shadows and growls.

Then, darkness.

Chapter 2 The Bite and the Mark

Light.

Too bright.

Aria groaned and turned her head, wishing the pounding in her skull would stop. Her neck throbbed with sharp pain, and her body felt heavy, as if she had run for miles before collapsing.

Slowly, she blinked her eyes open.

White walls. The faint smell of disinfectant. The steady beeping of a machine beside her.

A hospital.

For a moment, relief washed through her. Maybe last night had been nothing more than a nightmare. Maybe she had fallen, hit her head, and dreamed everything else.

But when her fingers touched her neck, she froze.

The skin was tender. Two raised punctures. Exactly where his teeth had been.

Her stomach lurched.

It had been real.

Her heart started racing as memories rushed back. The man with glowing red eyes. The sharp bite that had set her veins on fire. The wolf with golden eyes pressing against her shoulder, burning something into her skin.

Her free hand moved to her collarbone. The skin there was warm and sensitive, as if a hidden fire still lingered beneath. She pulled at the collar of the hospital gown and her breath caught.

There, etched faintly into her skin, was a strange mark. Not ink, not a scar. More like a symbol burned into her flesh.

She snatched her hand away as if touching it might set her aflame again.

No. No, this can't be real.

The door creaked open.

Aria sat up too fast, making the room spin. A nurse stepped inside, carrying a clipboard. Her smile was polite, but her eyes studied Aria too closely, as if she knew more than she should.

"You're awake," the nurse said. "How are you feeling?"

Aria's throat felt dry. "Confused. My neck hurts. What... what happened to me?"

"You were found unconscious in an alley," the nurse said calmly. "Somebody called it in, and an ambulance brought you here. You've lost some blood, but you'll recover with rest."

Aria gripped the blanket. "And the... the mark?"

The nurse glanced at her shoulder but did not answer. Instead, she scribbled something on her clipboard. "I'll let the doctor explain."

Her words felt too careful, too measured.

Before Aria could push for more, the nurse left. The door closed with a soft click, leaving her alone with the steady beeping of the monitor.

Alone... or maybe not.

Her chest tightened. That same heavy feeling from last night pressed against her skin, prickling the back of her neck. She looked toward the window.

Someone was there.

A figure leaned casually against the shadowed corner of the room, half hidden by the curtain. She hadn't heard the window open, but she knew, deep down-he had been there the whole time.

Her heart jumped. "Who's there?"

The figure stepped forward, and her breath caught.

It was him.

The man from the alley. The vampire. His hood was gone now, revealing a face that was both sharp and unnervingly beautiful. High cheekbones, dark hair falling over his forehead, lips curved in a faint smile that never touched his cold red eyes.

Her blood ran cold. "You"

"Relax," he said softly, raising one hand as if to calm her. "If I meant to finish what I started, you wouldn't be speaking right now."

The room seemed to shrink. Her fingers clutched the blanket so tightly her knuckles turned white. "What do you want from me?"

His smile deepened. "You already know."

Her heart pounded harder.

"You're mine now," he continued, stepping closer. "My bite claimed you. Your blood sings to me. No one else can have it."

Aria shook her head, her voice trembling. "No. No, I didn't ask for this. I don't belong to you."

Something flickered in his gaze, almost amused. "You think choice matters now?"

Before she could answer, the door burst open.

A rush of cold wind swept through the room, carrying the faint scent of pine and earth.

Aria gasped.

Another man stood in the doorway. Broad shoulders, sharp jaw, golden eyes that seemed to glow even in the sterile hospital light.

The wolf.

No, he was a man now, but she knew it was him. She felt it in her bones.

The two men locked eyes across the room, tension snapping between them like a drawn bowstring.

"You're early," the vampire said smoothly, though his jaw tightened.

"You're trespassing," the newcomer growled, his voice low and rough. His eyes flicked to Aria, softening just slightly before hardening again. "She's under my protection now."

Aria's chest rose and fell quickly, her head turning from one to the other. Her body still ached, but a strange pull tugged at her chest, drawing her toward both of them at once.

One cold as night. One fierce as fire.

Her voice broke as she whispered, "What's happening to me?"

Neither of them answered.

The vampire stepped closer to her bed. The wolf moved too, blocking him with a snarl.

For a moment, she thought they would tear each other apart right there in the hospital room. The air was thick with power, with danger, with something she couldn't name.

Then the vampire leaned close enough for her to hear his whisper. "Remember, little one. My bite came first."

The wolf growled in warning, but the vampire vanished, melting into shadow before her eyes.

Aria's breath hitched. He was just... gone.

Silence fell, broken only by the beeping machine.

She turned to the man who remained. His golden eyes met hers, steady and fierce.

"You're safe now," he said quietly.

But Aria wasn't sure if she believed him.

Because her neck still burned. Her shoulder still ached. And she was beginning to realize that whatever had started last night... it wasn't going to end anytime soon.

Chapter 3 Questions Without Answers

Aria sat frozen, her heart racing in her chest. The man with the golden eyes was still there, standing by her hospital bed like a guard who had no intention of leaving.

He had not moved since the vampire disappeared, but his presence filled the room. His shoulders were broad, his stance firm, his gaze never leaving her. He did not look like any man she had ever met before. He looked too sharp, too alive, too dangerous.

Finally, Aria found her voice. "Who are you?"

His eyes softened, but only a little. "Kael."

The name rumbled out of him like thunder.

Aria swallowed. Her throat was dry, her lips trembling. "And what are you?"

For a moment, silence. Then he answered with the same bluntness. "A werewolf."

Aria's stomach dropped. She wanted to laugh, to deny it, to tell him he was insane. But the memory of silver fur, of golden eyes glowing in the dark, of heat searing her skin, was still too fresh. Too real.

She shook her head. "No. No, this isn't possible. Werewolves don't exist. Vampires don't exist. I must be dreaming."

"You're not dreaming," Kael said firmly.

Her eyes burned as tears welled up. "Then what happened to me? Why me?"

He stepped closer, slow and careful, as though afraid she might bolt from the bed. "Because you were claimed."

The word sent a shiver down her spine.

Aria clutched the blanket tighter. "He bit me," she whispered. "He said I belonged to him. Then you... you marked me." She pressed her hand to her shoulder, feeling the heat that still lingered there. "What does that mean?"

Kael's jaw tightened. For a moment, he did not answer. Then he said, "It means you are caught between us now. Between two worlds that are already at war."

Her chest constricted. "I don't want to be between anyone. I don't want this."

Kael's gaze softened, but his voice stayed rough. "Neither did I want to mark you. But I had no choice. If I had not, he would have taken you fully. You would have been lost."

"Lost?" she repeated, her voice cracking.

Kael's golden eyes locked on hers, steady and unblinking. "Yes. Forever."

The weight of his words settled over her like stone.

She wanted to scream, to cry, to demand he fix it, but her body felt too heavy, her mind too clouded. Instead, she whispered, "So what happens now?"

Kael's silence was answer enough.

The door opened suddenly, and Aria flinched. It was only the nurse again, her eyes flicking from Aria to Kael with a strange tension.

"You shouldn't be here," the nurse said sharply to him.

Kael growled low in his throat, but the nurse did not flinch. She simply set down a tray of water and medicine, her face calm.

Aria looked between them, her heart pounding. "You know him," she said to the nurse.

The nurse hesitated, then said, "Drink some water, Miss Hale. You need your strength."

Aria shook her head. "No more games. Tell me what's happening. Please."

The nurse's expression softened. She sat on the edge of the bed, her voice quiet. "You were attacked by a vampire. And saved by a werewolf. Both of them left their mark on you. That makes you... important. Too important."

"Important?" Aria echoed.

Kael stepped closer, his voice low and grim. "It means you are the prize they will fight for. And the choice you make could decide the outcome of a war that has been building for centuries."

Aria stared at him, her hands trembling in the blanket. "A war? Between vampires and werewolves?"

"Yes," Kael said simply.

The nurse looked at Kael with a warning in her eyes. "You should not burden her yet. She needs time."

Kael's gaze never wavered from Aria. "She has no time."

The nurse sighed and left, closing the door behind her. The room fell silent again.

Aria pressed her palms to her face, her thoughts spinning. "This is insane. I'm just... I'm just a waitress. I work late shifts, I pay bills, I look after my mom. I'm no one. Why me?"

Kael's voice was steady, but there was something fierce behind it. "Because fate does not choose at random. There is something in you, Aria. Something even you do not see yet."

Her stomach knotted. She wanted to deny it, but deep inside, she felt the truth. The bite on her neck still burned. The mark on her shoulder pulsed with strange heat.

Something had changed in her. Something she could not undo.

Aria looked up at Kael, fear and anger clashing in her eyes. "I don't want to be yours. And I don't want to be his either."

Kael's jaw clenched, but his eyes softened, almost pained. "You may not have a choice."

The words made her chest tighten.

Before she could reply, a whisper slid through the air, cold as shadow.

Mine.

Aria gasped, clutching her neck. The voice was not spoken aloud. It was in her mind. His voice. The vampire's.

Kael's eyes narrowed. "He is reaching for you already."

Aria shook her head, tears slipping free. "I don't want this. I don't want either of you."

Kael stepped closer, kneeling beside her bed, his golden eyes burning with intensity. "Then fight. Do not let him win. Do not give in."

Her chest rose and fell fast, fear and anger mixing inside her. "And what about you? What if you try to take me too?"

Kael's gaze held hers, unflinching. "I will protect you. Even from myself if I must."

For a moment, silence hung heavy between them.

But Aria knew the truth. She was not safe. Not with him. Not with the vampire. Not with anyone.

And as the shadows thickened in the corners of the room, she realized something chilling.

Her life was no longer her own.
