Chapter 1 Nostalgic wrath and anguish

Lisa's POV,

"Alexander Lucas?" I muttered to myself, picking up the phone and dialing my secretary's desk.

"When karma chooses to be on your side," I thought, shaking my head in disbelief.

"Send Alexander Lucas in," I ordered, my voice urgent and clipped. There was a beat of silence on the other end of the line, and I could almost feel Judith's hesitation.

"But, ma'am," she started, her words trailing off. "it's not his turn to be interviewed," Judith said, her voice hesitant and uncertain.

"I am the boss here, right?" I asked, my tone stern. "Send Mr. Lucas in immediately."

There was another pause, and then a small sigh. "Yes, ma'am," she said, her voice deflated. "I'll send him right in."

I hung up the phone, feeling a surge of Anticipation. I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down. This was no time to lose my cool. I needed to be at the top of my game. I took one last look in the mirror, checking my appearance. I couldn't let this person see me looking anything less than my best.

As I pored over the resume and cover letter in front of me, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and disbelief. Somehow Alex had found his way back to my life after five years. A sense of anger and bitterness welled up inside me. It all came rushing back - the betrayal, the pain, the anger. I had spent years trying to put it behind me, but now it was all coming back to the surface with just the thought of seeing him again.

There was a knock on my door, and I said, "Come in." I turned around to back the door.

"Good morning, ma'am," He stammered, his voice shaking slightly. I could tell he was nervous.

I knew that voice. It was a voice that haunted my nightmares, that had plagued my memories for years. It was a voice I had hoped never to hear again. But there it was, clear as day, standing in my office. There was something different about the voice, it sounded humbled unlike the proud man I knew few years back.

""What do you want?" I asked, my voice harsh and cold. I didn't bother to turn around and face him, keeping my back to him as I spoke.

"I'm here for the interview, ma'am," he stammered, his voice full of nerves.

I scoffed, my frustration growing by the second. "You're not qualified," I said bluntly. "You're wasting my time, and your own. I suggest you leave, before I have security escort you out."

"Please, just give me a chance," he pleaded. "I promise I won't let you down. I'll do anything to prove myself, I'll work harder than anyone else here. Just please, don't turn me away."

I couldn't help but laugh. "You don't remember me, do you?" I asked, turning to face him. "Five years ago, I was in your shoes. I begged you to give us a chance. And what did you do?"

I watched as the realization dawned on his face, his eyes growing wide with understanding. "You're... "You're Lisa," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I never thought I'd see you again. I'm... I'm so sorry. I didn't realize who you were."

"It's too late," I said, shaking my head. "You can't undo what you did. You can't take back the way you treated me. And even if you could, I'm not sure I would want you to."

I could see the hurt in his eyes, the regret and remorse that was etched on his face. But I couldn't bring myself to care. He had done too much damage, had broken me too many times. I had spent years putting myself back together, and I wasn't about to let him or my sister break me again.

"Lisa, please, let me explain," he pleaded, taking a step towards me. But I held up my hand, stopping him in his tracks.

"Don't you dare take another step!" I shouted, my voice cracking with emotion. "What is there to explain, Alexander? That you ran off with my stepsister? That you left me pregnant and alone? Is that what you want to explain?"

I felt the rage boiling inside me, a mix of pain and anger that had been simmering for years.

"Please, Lisa," he begged, taking another step towards me. But I was having none of it. I stood my ground, my eyes blazing with fury.

"Don't come any closer," I said, my voice firm and commanding. "You left me to die, and now you expect me to just forgive you? To pretend like nothing happened? It's too late for that, Alexander. You made your choice, and now you have to live with the consequences."

He stood still, his face pale and drawn. I could see the regret in his eyes, but it was too little, too late.

"But you survived," Alex said, his voice full of false remorse.

I could tell he was just saying what he thought I wanted to hear, not what he really felt. It was infuriating, and I couldn't hold back my anger any longer.

"You think that's all that matters?" I spat, my voice dripping with disgust. "You betrayed me, not just with another woman, but with my stepsister! And now you expect me to just forgive and forget, like none of it ever happened? Are you insane?"

"Lisa," he said softly, taking a step towards me. I could see him reaching out, his hand extended towards me. But I had no intention of falling for his tricks. He was a master manipulator, and I knew better than to trust him.

"I said don't come any closer!" I yelled, my voice shrill with rage.

"Don't you dare test me, Alex. I knew you would come crawling back when you heard about my father's passing and the reading of his will. You know I'll be getting the lion's share of his inheritance, and all of a sudden, you're sorry? You're a snake, Alex, and I'm going to make you pay. Mark my words."

"I know I hurt you, but please, just listen to me," Alex said, desperation creeping into his voice. "Your stepsister, Susie, she was the one who put the idea in my head. She told me you would never be happy with me, that I would never be able to give you the life you deserved. She said it was better if I just left, and I was such a fool, I believed her."

I shook my head, my anger turning to cold fury. "So you're trying to pin this all on Susie, are you?" I said, my voice dripping with disdain.

I reached for the phone on my desk and dialed the security line. "There's a man in my office," I said, my voice shaking with anger. "He's threatening me, and I need you to come and get him out of here."

As I spoke, I could see the fear in Alex's eyes.

"Lisa..please," The security guard appeared in the doorway, his eyes trained on Alex. Without a word, he motioned for him to stand up and follow him out of the office. Alex glanced back at me, his eye pleading.

"That's just the beginning," I said, my voice cold and hard. "I have to avenge my child, the one you so callously turned your back on." I flung the papers at him, my anger boiling over.

He caught them with a start, his eyes wide with shock. "But I... I didn't know," he stammered, his voice weak and uncertain. "You didn't tell me you were pregnant. How could I have known?"

I narrowed my eyes at him, my fury at its peak. "You could have asked," I hissed, my words dripping with venom.

There was a strange sense of satisfaction as I watched the security guard drag him from the room. It felt like justice, like I was finally getting back at him for all the pain he had caused me. It reminded me of the day he had left me, how I had pleaded with him to stay, how I had begged and begged and he had still walked away.

Chapter 2 Caught Between Love And Wealth.

Liam's POV,

"Mom I cannot break up with my fiancée Vicky because of our family business," I replied in anger.

"You will do as I say Liam!" Her voice fuming in anger, "Your father's company is about to go bankrupt and this is our only chance of reviving that company, we cannot loose everything we have worked so hard to achieve because of your love affair with Vicky!" My mom backfired in rage.

"It is not just a love affair, I have known her for the longest, Vicky is my wife to be mom," I said almost in tears.

"Was your wife to be, not anymore!" My mom exclaimed trying to catch her breathe she continued,

"Lisa is in the picture now and you must wife her to save your father's company," She concluded and retired to her sit.

"And what if she doesn't love me? What if she doesn't give me a chance? What if I am not even her spec?" I asked in confusion.

"You are already giving up even before trying? Is that it?" My mom backfired, as she wasn't having it.

"I am not giving up, it is only a sensible question. She feels like a powerful person from your description and I do not know if I am fit, I do not know if she will like me," I defended.

"Then you make her! Make her like you! Make her love you! Heck, make her marry you!" My mom exclaimed in anger.

"So I should marry a stranger? I should find a way into a stranger's life?" I asked, still in confusion.

"You have no other option, that is the only way I can make you the heir apparent to the company. I give you one week to do the right thing or I will cut you off every of your father's inheritance and make sure I will every thing to your younger sister," My mom threatened.

"Why my sister? I have followed the family's business since I was a child and have made great success in knowing all about the business, but somehow you always find ways to compare me with my sister, all the time!" I responded in anger.

"Your sister has also followed the family's business and has done great figuring how it works!" My mom exclaimed.

"It still is not enough reason to threaten my position as the heir apparent," I replied slowly still raging on the inside.

"No one goes against me Liam, and your sister has never ever questioned my authority, she will do everything she can to make sure that our company stands, that's the true quality of a leader, I do not need a weakling to run the family's business and until you prove that you are in-fact as strong as you claim and take this one for the company's sake? You cannot be the heir apparent," My mom yet again threatened.

"And mind you, it is not a threat, it's my truth," She added in a very stern voice.

I couldn't feel for a moment, my mom is a very powerful woman who never goes back on her words and I know going against her is the wrong thing to do as she will make sure I lose out on all my rightful inheritance. I stood there filled with confusion on how to get through this stranger.

"This document contains every single detail you need to know about Lisa," my mom said disrupting my thoughts, throws a bunch of well organized papers on the table close to me and walked out.

I took the documents and headed straight to my room, as much as I love my fiancée I just couldn't let my father's company fall nor allow my rightful inheritance slip off my hands, I took out my phone immediately and dialed my fiancée's number.

"Hey, I am annulling our engagement," I started in a very cold voice.

"Annulling our marriage? I do not understand, what do you mean by that?" Vicky my fiancée asked,

I could tell from her voice that she was scared and confused.

"I wish I could tell you more but I can't, my family needs me, I wish you well," I responded.

I immediately ended the call to avoid further interrogation from her as to why I needed to call the engagement off.

I just couldn't go against my mother or let our family business down, her marriage with my dad was a contract marriage, none of them understood what genuine love truly is, they only know about their companies and wealth and that is the only thing they are interested in, that is the same reason they have maintained a high profile in the society, and I needed to follow that step for my mother to find me worthy.

I stared at the document for a while, picked it up from my bed and glanced through some of the information. She had quite a reputation.

"If this is what it will take to prove to my mom that I am better than my sister, I will do it. I will sacrifice my happiness to get what my mom wants," I thought out loud.

As I picked up my laptop and searched her name on the internet "Lisa Gilbert"

she was everywhere on the search, Known for her rise to fame through pure hard work and determination, there was no record of her past relationships but she has a daughter whom she adores and shows off to the world, a very strong personality. What a powerful woman!

"Lisa Gilbert my main target, I will do everything it takes to get you," I said out loud, pointing directly to her pictures I found on the internet.

Chapter 3 A kind Satisfaction

Lisa's POV

"Hello? Is this Miss Gilbert?" an unknown voice spoke from the other end of the call.

"Yes please how may I help you," I responded.

"I am calling from Emily's school, your child was involved in an accident, please you need to hurry down as soon as you can, thank you," the unknown voice said in a hurry and ended the call in that speed.

"What? My Emily? My child? How? Hello? Please talk to me where is my Emily," but I got no response, she already ended the call.

My heart sank and I got shivers all around, leaving me gasping for air, I was cold and sweaty at the same time, I tried dialing the number a couple of times but to no avail.

I immediately rushed out to the garage where my car was parked, it felt like my whole life was crumbling down.

"Emily is the only reason I live, Emily is the only reason I have fought this hard, Emily is the only happiness I know, Nothing should happen to my Emily," I cried out loud as I got into the car and my driver zoomed off to the direction of her school.

Ever since I got pregnant for Alex and he abandoned me and flee with my step sister leaving me vulnerable, my father saw me as a big embarrassment and disowned me because I got pregnant without getting married first, he saw me as a stain to his reputation, Emily in my womb was the only reason I woke up each day and choose to live, after she was born, I suffered to make ends meet until life started smiling at me, no matter how much burden and pain I felt, her smile gave me a sense of calm and made every struggle worth it.

I found my angel outside her school with few strangers and her tutor, I told the driver to halt and immediately highlighted from my car and rushed to my daughter.

"What happened to her? Was she hurt? Why is she not in the school premises?" I asked still feeling so scared as I grabbed my child tightly.

"That man saved me," Emily managed to respond pointing at a young man standing close to her.

"So you are not hurt?" I asked touching all pets of her body.

"No mummy, I wasn't hurt," Emily reassured me.

I kissed her on the forehead and went straight to her tutor.

"Why was my child out here?! Why were you all careless about my child! I will bring this whole school down if I do not get answers this instant!" I screamed, feeling so much rage.

"We are sorry ma'am, She stepped out of the school premises without informing anyone and that's why we couldn't protect her, we are sorry," Emily's tutor responded as her head was bowed in respect.

"What were you all doing when she left the school premises? A child cannot protect herself! Why was the gate of this school open!" I backfired still fuming in anger.

"We are sorry ma'am, we take full responsibility, such mistake will never happen again," Emily's tutor responded with her head still bowed facing the floor.

"Oh, it had better not!" I exclaimed trying to calm my already provoked heart.

I noticed I haven't thanked the man who saved my child and he was staring at me expecting me to do the right thing, i was really grateful for him.

I took a deep breath to release my tension and moved close to him.

" Thank you so much for saving my child," I said almost in tears.

"She was just lucky, I didn't do much," He replied with a smile.

"What is your name please?" I asked in a polite manner.

"My name is Liam, Liam Roberts," He responded as he stretched his right hand forward for a hand shake.

I took the handshake and replied with a smile, "I am Lisa....Lisa Gilbert".

"Nice knowing you Lisa Gilbert," He said with a smile.

"Nice meeting you too, Mr Roberts," I responded, with a warm smile.

"How do I repay you for saving my daughter? I really do not know how to repay your kindness," I added willing to repay him in anyway possible for saving my precious daughter's life.

"You do not have to repay me, but you can go on a date with me if you want to, it is your choice," He paused and continued, Please go on a date with me".

"Sure, let's go out on a date," I responded feeling grateful.

"Here is my card, let me know when you are free," I added as I gave out my card to him.

"Will tonight be fine by you?" he asked politely.

"Uhnn.... I will need to readjust my schedule," I answered feeling unsure.

"Here is my card, call me when you are sure," he said to me.

Without hesitation he handed his card over to me, walked to his car and drove off.

"This could be a very good opportunity to get my own share of my father's will if this man is single," This thought immediately came to my mind.

"Ooh of course I will clear out my entire schedule to make this date a success, I need him for my inheritance," I thought to myself as I smiled.

I immediately took out my phone and dialed my personal assistant Mark's number to clear off all my meetings for the evening and make it free for me.

"Liam Roberts is the name right? You came at the right time to carry out my strategic plan and get all that rightfully belongs to me.

My perfect tool," I thought to myself with a grin of satisfaction appearing on my face.
