"Father." Roxanne's voice rang out in the living room as she watched the man who was supposed to be her father, support her stepmother in her evil decisions.
"Don't call me your father if you can't even do such a simple task as this." Roxanne's father, Mr. Derek Renwick spat out, taking a seat beside his wife, Evelyn Renwick.
"Father, you want me to get married to a disabled man? To a man rumored to be even more ugly than a dog?" She asked again as tears rolled down her face, staining her face and shirt in the process.
All these words coming from Derek were because his wife, Evelyn, suggested that Roxanne get married in place of Reina, her stepsister, to the son of the Sébastien family. The son is rumored to be handicapped and ugly.
Everyone knew that the Sébastien family was the richest family in the whole of Northpass City, Being the only old money family to own half of the riches of the Northpass region.
The Sébastien family also had three sons, but two were allegedly killed in a plane crash which happened some years back. Now they were left with just one son who never showed himself to the public, and he was even rumored to have become a handicap after the incident.
A few days back, The Renwick family had faced crashes In business and the only people capable of helping the family climb back to the ladder of success, happened to be the renowned old money Sébastien family.
Derek reached out to them for help, but the Sébastien family saw the Renwick's as nothing before them, and they found out about the Renwick's daughters. The Sébastien family then sent a proposal to the Renwicks, asking for their daughter's hand in marriage for their only surviving son, Ciel Sébastien , In exchange for a partnership in making the Renwick's family legacy blossom in Northpass.
Initially, everyone knew Reina as the only daughter of the Renwicks, given that Roxanne's wasn't even treated as a maid, not to talk of a family member.
Roxanne sniffed as she watched her father looking nonchalant without a care in the world.
"But father, why me?" She asked, knowing fully that the question was dumb, considering that her father would always give the same answer.
"What do you mean why?" It was Evelyn this time, "You're the oldest one amongst you two and you're the rightful person fit for this marriage. Besides, the Sébastien s are crazily rich, they'll take care of you and you don't have to suffer anymore" She said casually as she sipped the wine before her.
"But they didn't even ask for my hand in marriage!" Roxanne raised her voice this time, thinking they would at least see the sense she was trying to make. But Derek got mad and stood up to hit her across the face.
"Firstly, you don't raise your voice for us, and Secondly, you will get married whether they asked for your hand in marriage or not. Without this marriage, our family will crumble and your brother needs medical help as fast as possible or he might die, right? Also, our Sofia is too beautiful for him. You'll do just fine. You're fat and ugly."
Hearing the words coming out of her own father's mouth, Roxanne felt her body tremble.
He spoke as if Finn and herself weren't his owm.
"Father, he is your son. Why are you saying all these? Finn needs money for his surgery." Roxanne said again, trying to make him understand her words since he seemed not to have heard her the first time.
Derek gave her a disgusted look and snorted, "Finn is not my son, your mother was a cheating whore!" He spat out, making Roxanne freeze in her tracks as his words registered in her mind.
Her mother? A whore?
"Father! How could you?!" She yelled again in anger as her tears fell down her face. Derek said nothing more and just sat down with Evelyn who had a smirk on her face.
"Reina is my precious daughter, the only young lady of the Renwick family and to you, do you think she deserves to end up with a disabled child like Ciel Sébastien ?" Derek asked as she stood quietly, Roxanne watched her father as pain flooded her senses.
There was literally nothing else she could do at this point. Finn was her younger brother and he was currently hospitalized since he was diagnosed with a severe case of Aortic dissection requiring immediate surgical intervention.
But Evelyn had suggested that they would only help in taking care of Finn's hospital and surgical bills if only Roxanne agreed to marry Ciel in place of her Reina.
She was left in a dilemma of marrying a man she never even knew for her brother's sake, or refusing the marriage and losing her only family, Finn.
Derek watched her expressions, seeing the hurt, pain and other emotions that was heart wrenching.
"I can't do it father, I just can't." She said softly and without waiting for a response, she dashed out of the living room and out of the house. Her tears weren't drying up no matter how hard she tried to hold it in.
Just when she thought all hope was lost, she remembered her fiance, Devian Willow. The only son of the Willow family.
She had been betrothed to him for a few years and in those few years, she never asked him for any financial help. She would rather struggle for the money than ask him for help. But at this point, she was desperate for help in saving her brother's life.
With the new found hope, she got into a taxi and went straight to Devian's house that was a few blocks away from the Renwick Manor. Hopefully, Devian would help her since he was her fiance.
The Taxi arrived at the entrance of Devian's house In no time and she got down from the taxi. After paying up, she hastily made her way into the premises and straight to the front door. The door was locked, surprising her as she had already seen his car in the parking lot.
She shrugged it off and just reached into her bag to pull out the spare key Devian had given her for his apartment.
She unlocked the door and stepped in. The living room was empty and she raised a brow in surprise, but quickly shrugged and headed upstairs to his bedroom.
Halfway to Devian's bedroom, Roxanne heard strange noises, or so she thought, coming from Devian's bedroom. She hastened her footstep, thinking a burglar broke in.
But when she got to the door, she discovered that it was slightly opened.
She reluctantly peeked in, to confirm If truly it was a burglar, but what she saw next shattered her entire world and hope.
Right before her, Devian was making out with another woman on his bed.
Roxanne subconsciously placed a hand to her chest as pain assaulted her.
Betrayal left a sore taste in her mouth.
Without warning, she went ahead to push the door open, to confront Devian for his actions.
"Devian!" she yelled and prepared to lash out at the woman in his arms, but the head that poked out to meet hers was none other than Reina Renwick's.
Roxanne 's words got stuck in her throat, seeing that her own fiance was having an affair with her stepsister.
Roxanna's POV
My whole words crumbled before my very eyes as I watched my supposed fiance and my stepsister.
How could Devian break the trust I had in him this much? Didn't he love me? He said he did.
But what was all these?
"Roxanna, I can explain." Devian suddenly said as he put on his shorts and climbed off the bed, I saw a smirk form on Reina's face as she sat up on the bed, using the blanket to cover herself up.
"Roxanna, it's not what you think" Devian began to say as he came to stand before me, but before he could proceed with his words, I raised my hand to slap him.
Devian's eyes widened as he held onto the side of his face I had struck.
"Explain what?! That you're sleeping around with my sister?!" I yelled as tears stung my eyes.
Devian always professed love to me each time we were together, we even had our marriage coming up in two weeks time.
But all this while I was getting overly excited, the man was whoring around with my step sister.
Devian's gaze darkened as he glared at me.
"Fine! It's exactly what you think! Yes, I slept with Reina!" He shamelessly admitted as he stood before me with a darkened gaze.
I stiffened in shock as a part of me had been begging him to at least still try to give a reasonable explanation why he cheated on me.
"I chose Reina instead of you, I love Reina and I can't even imagine I was willing to end up with someone like you! You're ulgy, disgusting and so huge. You could sit on me and I'd snap like a damn twig! Loose some fucking weight bitch."
He yelled again.
My heart clenched at every word that came out of his mouth, his words were like venom, trying to consume my soul as the tears kept flowing out of my eyes.
"Devian, why? After everything we've been through together, you still went ahead to betray the love we shared." I said through clenched teeth, but Devian laughed out.
"We shared? Roxanna I'm sorry to say this but I was always in love with Reina and not you. You're nothing to me." He spat out and I staggered in shock as his words hit me with a force that shattered me.
This was definitely not the Devian I used to know. My Devian was nowhere to be found.
"What's going on here?" I heard a voice from behind, but I didn't even need to turn to know that it was my father.
I wasn't surprised that he followed me all the way here. He had a big ego and would never let me walk out on him without punishments.
I saw Reina hurriedly put on Devian's shirt shamelessly as she climbed off the bed too.
"Father, you're here." She said softly as my father walked further into the room.
I turned slightly to see him glaring at me.
"What other troubles have you come here to cost you this child?!" He yelled in my face as I shuddered and shut my eyes.
"Father, I caught Devian and Reina together in bed? How could Reina do this to me?" I asked him, watching his face and waiting for a reasonable reply from him.
My father averted his gaze from me and replied, "So what? You both aren't married yet and besides it's Devian's choice. He is old enough to make the decisions and choose what he wants. It's not my fault that he chose your sister."
The shameless words that came out of my father's mouth were the most disgusting words I heard in my entire life.
I turned to Devian, and he also averted his gaze. "Father, did you just hear what you just said yourself?!" This time, I couldn't hold back the anger in me as I yelled at him, but the next minute, I felt a slap descend on my face and my head swiped to the other side.
I held onto the side of my face that stung so much from the slap just now, then I turned to see who had slapped me.
It was Evelyn as she had a deathly glare on her face.
"How dare you raise your stupid voice on your father?!" She asked in anger and I saw Reina smile at me from the corners of her eyes.
"Mum, stop!" She yelled and suddenly ran up to her mum with a pitiful look in her eyes.
"Mum please don't hit big sis, she has every right to be mad. I'm the one to blame here." she said and casted her gaze down to appear dainty and caring.
I knew all this was just an act of hers as usual. She never missed any chance to make me look bad.
"It's not your fault Honey, she's just jealous that you're better than she is!" Evelyn said and pulled her daughter close. I glared at them both in anger.
"Reina, I thought I could trust you." I said to her, feeling stunned by everything that was unfolding. I had to pass through all these at this time of my life, when I needed help the most.
My brother at the hospital, my fiance cheating on me and everything.
Reina turned to me and blinked.
"I'm sorry, Sister Roxanna, but please don't take Devian from me." She suddenly uttered and her mother walked forward immediately.
"She can't take him from you when she is already getting married to someone else."
My head shot in her direction and I saw a smirk on her face.
"What? Getting married to someone else?" Reina asked and Evelyn nodded.
"Since you're pregnant for Devian already, I th_"
"Pregnant?" I cut her short in shock, "Sof–So–Reina is pregnant?" I asked in a shaky voice and Reina nodded shyly with a small smile.
"Who owns the child?" I asked again, my heart beat accelerating as I already guessed the answer.
"It's Devian's." She replied and the tears I was holding in came rushing out of my eyes.
Devian got Reina pregnant? That was the most disgusting thing I could ever imagine.
My stomach churned in disgust as I felt like vomiting. Devian was having a child with my step sister?
"As I was saying, since Reina is already pregnant for Devian, why not let Roxanna here take her place and get married to Ciel Sébastien instead?" Evelyn continued her words.
I turned to look at her and shook my head.
"I won't marry him."
"Sorry sweetheart, I already accepted their proposal on your behalf. And the wedding is set to happen tomorrow. Yes, it's fast because they're desperate to marry off their handicapped son off." She chuckled at the last part while I shivered in fear.
This family of mine was hell. Everyone had a twisted mind and didn't care for you except for their selfish gains.
"After the wedding with Ciel is completed tomorrow, I would personally pay in money to commence the treatments for your brother's surgery. Now be a good girl and go back home to prepare." Evelyn said sternly, not giving me a break to even think it through.
Reina walked up to stand before me as she winked, since she was backing the others.
"Sister Roxanna, please just marry Ciel for me and let me be with Devian. My child can't be without a father, and I know you wouldn't also let that happen. If you marry Devian, My child would be fatherless and the Sébastien 's would never accept me because of my child. So just accept the Handicapped son."
She said, purposely adding the Last part as if to mock me. The smirk on her face never vanished for once as she also tucked in her lips, stifling a laugh.
With those words said, Evelyn walked up to me and pulled me by my arm roughly away from the house and straight to the car outside.
I winced at her tight grip, trying to get her hands off me, but she yanked and pushed me into the car.
"Get in and let's go home to prepare you for the wedding!"
Roxanna's POV
Evelyn pulled me into the mansion, but I kept resisting, trying my best to get her hands off me. I didn't want to get married. Definitely not this way.
I would rather sell my body somewhere and make the money from a rich old man than get tied to a disabled stranger.
My pleas went on deaf ears as Evelyn kept pulling to my bedroom upstairs.
"Let go of me!" I yelled for the untenth time, but she ignored me and pulled harder.
"You'd better keep your mouth shut and come with me!" She yelled back, but I refused to be pulled like some animal. With the last remaining energy left in me, I bit her arm; the very one that kept pulling me continuously.
"Ahhh!! You animal!" Evelyn shrieked and released her hold on me. I saw that as a good opportunity to make a run for the exit.
"Stop her! Catch her and don't let her escape!" I heard Evelyn's voice from behind and I ran even faster.
Once I got outside the mansion, I ran directly to the roadside to flag down a taxi. Thankfully, I found a taxi and hurriedly got in.
The guards went after me stopped the moment the taxi drove away from the Renwick 's estate.
The tears I held back for so long began to fall uncontrollably as I sniffed, trying hard to dry up the tears.
I caught the driver staring at me through the rearview and I hurriedly composed myself.
"Where to, miss?" He asked after he saw I had wiped my tears.
"To any bar around." The words came out of my mouth even before I could realize it.
The driver glanced at me once more, "Are you sure about that miss?" He asked and I shot him a glare.
"And what do you mean by that?" I asked him in return, he kept quiet and faced the road immediately.
Soon, he pulled up before a bar and turned to me.
"We're here, ma'am." I looked out the window to see that we indeed had arrived at a bar.
I got down from the taxi and paid him for the ride, then turned to face the bar which I had bravely asked the driver to take me to.
I didn't know why, but for some unknown reason, I had this feeling and urge to go get a drink and unwind. I just wanted to have peace for a day without having to think of any of my present problems.
And Finn was still hospitalized, I still had to think of how to gather the money for his surgery.
I dragged in a haggard breath before making my way into the bar. This was my first time being here, but I ignored the looks everyone threw at me and made my way to the counter. Once I made myself comfortable on the counter, the bartender came up to me.
"Hi Miss, what would you like?" He asked, flashing me a smile as I blinked.
What would I like? I never even visited any bar in my life, but I needed the relief and I wouldn't hesitate to let loose tonight. Who knows, I might never have the freedom ever again.
"Give me the strongest drink you have here." I said, and I saw the amused look that flashed in the eyes of the bartender.
He walked off and returned with a drink.
"Here's the strongest drink for ladies," he said as he handed me the glass. Without thinking, I chucked the content into the back of my throat.
Being alcohol, I never knew the effect would be that grave for a newbie to chuck it down.
I winced at the burning sensation that assaulted my throat the next minute.
"Don't down it that way, you look like a newbie." The bartender chuckled.
I extended the glass to him, even though I was close to passing out from the momentary loss of air from my lungs.
The bartender gave me a once over look before adhering to giving me another shot.
I did a count down in my head and went ahead to repeat my previous act, not minding the words of the bartender.
I downed the drink in one go and winced again, holding my neck dramatically as I gasped for air.
Just when I felt the effect of the drink kicking in with the dizziness and sudden lightness I felt, I realized that someone had been staring at me for quite a while.
I whipped my head to the side, only to be met with a piercing silver eyes staring back at me.
His eyes were so clear and cold, pulling me in and at the same time warning me off. I found this particular stranger very handsome and attractive, or maybe it was the drink's effect.
"Hey pretty boy." I called out and leaned into his direction, a smile made its way to my lips as I watched the surprised look that flashed in his eyes.
"What?...why are you staring at me as if I grew an extra head, huh?" I asked again, hiccuping also. The pretty boy must be disgusted with me already.
"Seriously..... is something on my face or did you also fall in love at first sight with me?" I asked and pouted at the last part. The same lie Devian told me.
He still didn't say a word, but I still went ahead to ask again, "Or do you want to sleep with me?"
I heard a gasp from the side and I turned to see the bartender's eyes flashing with fear. I raised a brow at him, "What?.... Did...did I really grow an extra head?" I asked him as fear consumed me. I felt my head, trying to feel the second head, but there was nothing.
I released a sigh of relief and turned to the handsome stranger again.
"I'm a virgin!" I suddenly announced and I saw him raise a questioning brow.
"Miss..." the bartender began, but the stranger silenced him with just one look.
I ignored the bartender also and boldly whispered to the stranger, "I'm willing to sell my virginity to you.....only if you give me the amount of money I'll ask for." I said and hiccuped again.
"And how much are you willing to sell it for?" He finally said something, his deep voice making my toes curl.
"$10,000" I blurted out, that was exactly Finn's hospital bill amount.
"Just that?" He asked as he took a sip of his drink. His movements were graceful and elegant.
"Yes, I don't want much." I replied and he nodded.
"As long as there wouldn't be any strings attached, I'm willing to comply."
"Yes, Yes.....no strings_" I hiccuped, "No strings attached."
***
I arrived at the hospital the next day, still feeling disgusted with myself and happy at the same time, I got the most shocking news of my life.
Finn had been taken away by my father and stepmother. He was transferred to another hospital that no one knew about. My entire world crumbled as tears stung my eyes.
Why was passing through all these? Why did my family have to treat me even more than a stranger?
They were heartless and mercilessly, not caring about anything except their selfish gains; The Renwick 's Firm.
I already had the money, but it seemed useless at this point since I couldn't even use it to save my brother.
I felt used and embarrassed, remembering what I had to do for the money.
Just then, I got a call from Evelyn and when I connected the call, she said, "If you still want to see Finn, then come back home and get married to Ciel Sébastien ."
