CHAPTER 1
LILY'S POV
"LILY!!" The sound of my name boomed down the hallway, startling me into action. I quickly dashed to the mirror, slathering on some lipstick and blush as if my life depended on it. Tonight was the night. I had to look perfect for the prom night ceremony, where the pack's most eligible bachelor, Alpha Gary, would choose his mate from a sea of women. I was nervous but determined to make the best of it.
Since I was a child, I had fantasized about being mated to the pack's most eligible bachelor. But as I grew older, I realized that I didn't have the courage to approach him, even though he was my closest friend. I would often find myself staring at him from across the room, my heart pounding in my chest, but I could never bring myself to say the words that were on the tip of my tongue.
"WITH A STANDING OVATION, LET'S WELCOME ALPHA GARY!!" I heard screams from the main pack hall and butterflies filled my belly.
My gaze roved over to the wristwatch on my wrist.
8:00 PM.
"It's time." I whispered into the air and walked out of the pack hall's female bathroom. My face burned with anxiety, my head dropped as I walked towards the door. Walking up to the door, I gripped the door knob and twisted slowly.
I stepped off into the open and paused, my gaze flickered over to the figure standing some meters away from me. My gaze beamed on Sarah, my childhood best friend, who, unlike me, had long midnight black hair, stunning black eyes and a glowing skin I had always dreamt of having.
I gawked in amusement at the gracefulness of her Sarah's purple trumpet gown, her midnight black hair was braided in ringlets. Her face was powdered, particular with make-up.
"Why did you stay long?" Sarah inquired, raising an exaggerated brow at her as I chuckled lightly, trying to cover up the fact that I was inspecting herself in the dressing room. Sarah smiled briefly, revealing her white set of dentition as she gazed at me, I flashed a smile at her.
"I was only making sure I looked gorgeous as usual," I boasted with a flip of my hair backward.
"Astounding to appease who exactly? Lily, when are you finally going to confess your love to Alpha Gary? Why not ask him to be your boyfriend before he is snatched away by some other girl," Sarah said as I chided with a numb look on my face, "I just don't know what to expect, where he would get angry or refuse?"
Her speech now brought back to me the thought of Gary, my first and only crush. He had and would always be my Romeo, although we were close, I found it hard to voice out my feelings before him, I liked him, in fact, I loved him, and I was going to tell him tonight, at prom.
That is my goal.
And I am set on achieving it.
"You have to tell him your feelings and tell him you love him, so he would mate you and mark you as his own, It is either now or never, and when I said never, I meant at the party!" Sarah said with a mask of seriousness worn on her face. I stretched an arm out and crossed it on Sarah's shoulders as we both continued to walk in the long hallway.
"Hurry Lily! We both know that you won't forgive yourself if you lose this opportunity."
The walk from the lady's restroom to the pack hall was short, but with the massive crowd of people in the pack surroundings, I coul barely walk with the crowd all around me. I could feel the quality of a thousand gazes all at the same time, I heard whispers and chuckles from my surrounding, but I now didn't care.
Once we arrived in the hall, I stepped into the hall, the hall was full of them; tall and commanding arrogant gentlemen and briskly imperious ladies. My gown had caused a stir- I hadn't been sure of what to expect. What I received were wide smiles and nods of encouragement from the ladies in the prom- and arrested glances from the men. I searched with my gaze for the view of Gary, but he seemed to be nowhere to be found. My eyes squinted- my concentration deepened as she searched with an eager gaze for any guy who peradventure looked like Gary.
A tap came from my back and I spun almost immediately, at alert, I looked at Gary, the blonde-haired guy with blue eyes, I felt a shiver at the view of him. At closer range, the effects of his face diminished not one whit- if anything, the impact of the strong, angular planes, decidedly patrician nose, his lips, long, thin and provocatively mobile were now even more pronounced.
His hair was indeed golden brown, thick and wavy enough to form large locks; the rest of him she had decided it was wise rather not to notice. His long shoulders hung elegantly with broadened chest. Anxiety pumped ceaselessly into my veins, I stiffened, not prepared to meet herself with such a handsome young man. My palms now immediately seemed to be covered in sweats, my neck hair stiffened with anxiety pumping ceaselessly into my veins.
"Hi Lily," Alpha Gary had said in the most romantic voice.
I watched as he dipped his hands into his pockets as I forced the first two words that had popped into my head out, "Hi, Gary."
He smiled at me, with that, a knot gathered in my stomach, butterflies gathered in it as my hands soaked wet with nervous sweats. "I have something to tell you." I volunteered to speak first, as he faced me and had buried his attention in me.
"What is it?" I questioned with an arched brow, I tried to spill out the words and feel free, but I feared what his reaction would be to her proposal. I made up my mind and tried to push out the words from the barrel of words I called my mouth.
The silence seemed to cause some friction as Gary cranked up, "I have something to tell you instead," I turned to him and had watched with delight the instant a thought popped into my mind, he could have wanted to ask me to be his girlfriend. I acted along as butterflies gathered the more in my stomach, eagerness was written all over my face as she gazed into his dreamy blue eyes.
"I just found my mate." his voice chimed as it echoed against the walls of my ear, shock enveloped me, his words had come as a bombshell, one that exploded in me. My jaw fell in momentary astonishment, I still couldn't gather the strength to talk to close it shot, the news had weakened.
I felt like my heart slowly breaking in half, and I could barely breathe. The butterflies that had been fluttering in my stomach just moments ago were now dead, and a wave of sadness washed over me. Gary had been my first and only crush, the man I'd dreamed about every night, the person I'd loved so deeply. And now, to hear him say those words... it was almost too much to bear.
Tears stung my eyes, I wanted to speak as the tears got loose, my eyes produced the liquid as if it had been pre-prepared. Shame now hung firmly on me as people in the prom were now looking at me as they all mumbled, I wiped the tears and ran off- off to wherever my legs would lead me to. I ran for the exit and went on, not even looking back as I missed a foot and was about to fall to the floor when a mighty hand caught my waist.
"Aah!"
CHAPTER 2
ALEXANDER'S POV
(AT THE PARTY)
I fought to regain my balance as a lady crashed into me, one who seemed to be far too drained in thoughts to look where she was heading. She almost fell as I stretched a hand and caught her in the air, my hands held her tiny waists tightly. I gazed, from beneath my lashes, over to her, the lady in my hands; her face was mystically perfect, the kind that could rule a man's fantasies, her hair swept back from it in a glorious, golden cascade, like an angel's. And her eyes sparkled with a richness for life, they were focused on me with an intensity that had my blood heating. This lady had somehow seemed to grab my emotions with a sweet aura.
My heart raced frantically in my chests, blood seemed to stop flowing in my veins, a pain cut through my head as a headache ensued, I wanted to grip my head, but this lady seemed to have drowned my attention. My nose, a barrel of smells, differentiated the smell of alcohol from the one I was inhaling now, this smell, I'd deduced, was of an intoxicating fragrance, one that enticed and drew me. The base of my neck tingled, I felt a pain coming through me as a sensation coursing through my veins. I felt my head splitting into equal halves, my neck hair stiffened as the sensation grew thicker.
My heart raced, and a headache ensued as my wolf whimpered in loss. A beautiful, intoxicating fragrance filled my senses, coming from the lady in my arms. With a sense of longing, I felt a powerful connection to her, one that could not be denied.
My nose, stopped working for a second as my inner wolf whimpered in loss, and then, I inhaled in yet, that same scent, one that was obviously coming from this lady. "Mate," my wolf yelled. She immediately rose back up to her feet as she ran off, I turned and watched her disappear into the darkness. I wanted to run, but it wouldn't be sensible to run after the lady I just saved, it was inappropriate, but when she was my mate, it managed to sound at least reasonable.
The mate bond I had just felt was nothing to be denied, with her in my custody, she could lead me and teach him how to navigate in this werewolf pack I had come to research. The fact that I was the next in line to my Lyman ancestors, I am a prince who is thirsty for research, thirsty for knowledge and this thirst had made him to come to the Nightfall pack to watch closely the way of lives of werewolves. My mate bond to this lady had been a potent connection, one that had knotted me to this unknown lady whose beauty had mesmerized me. Something about her seems to intrigue my wolf, and that is what I'll find out.
I am going to find this lady and fish her out of this pack, my mate was something valuable, something I wouldn't lose for anything. I tried to remember the look of her face but all I remembered was her beauty, I turned and saw the hint of glitter in her dress in the far distance, my legs called unto me- to run after her. I felt ordered by the force and I couldn't say no to the attraction as my legs moved as I followed her in her tracks. As proverbs would have it, one could not run faster than his/her shadows, but this was a different case entirely, I ran even faster than my shadow. I had followed her until she had gotten to a dark street, one that was dark and weary. I followed, inspecting the turns I took, with a determination to find out wherever she lived, a determination, I was set to fulfill.
I am going to know her abode, and that is my primary goal, I watched as she walked into a path, a path that led into a building, one that was made from poor constructing materials. The house, I'd imagined being a big mansion, but all I saw here was a two-storey building.
"Phew-"
I exhaled and wiped off some clouds of sweats as I gulped hard, "That was a close one."
I arched a brow and said to no one but myself, "Now back to the prom."
***
I had not stopped in my running until I finally arrived at the prom hall where the prom has been induced. I stretched my gaze and looked over and saw two people, a man who I knew to be Gary and a girl I had assumed was his girlfriend as they both argued seriously.
"Gary, I think it's time you stop caring about that Lily of a girl, you are now making her to look like your mate when she isn't." The lady rasped with anger boldly laced in her voice.
"Stop it Nina, I know you are my mate but Lily seems to be hurt by what I said earlier about you being my mate and I just wanted to find out." Gary inclined his head, his face devoid of emotions.
"Just hear yourself, Lily seems to be hurt by what I said earlier about you being my mate, and you just wanted to find out." the lady prodded and continued, "It means she is a fu*king sl*t who is jealous of the fact that you are already mated, that was why she ran out of hall weeping like someone who was beaten."
"Can we just drop this case?" Gary mused lightly.
"Not until you give me the attention I deserve as your mate," she argued, "She is nothing but a crazy wolf."
I listened, attentively to what the two people were saying, from what I heard, I could tell that the lady, Lily, who they were arguing about was the lady who had bumped into me. Not only that, she was nobody but a pathetic wolf in the pack. I sighed and turned and strutted off with anger in his expression, I was now angry at the fact that I was mated to a wolf, a pathetic one at that.
Of all the things the moon goddess could have mated to me, it was the least I'd expected, a wolf. But I had to manage- not to complain about my mate because I knew that she would add to his research. My research on Werewolves, she was a werewolf, was something that triggered me.
But now.
I now made it a goal to tell her she is my mate.
And I am going to achieve that.
CHAPTER 3
ALEXANDER'S POV
I grinned with a serious frown worn on my face; my brows arched, and my keen gaze flickered over to the view of the house in which my newly founded mate, lily, lived. I had been waiting for what now seemed to be hours now and it seemed as If she wasn't going to come out. Her dazzling beauty had kept me on the edge of the bed, her eyes, had lit up my anxiety. My wolf had been disturbed by her, my mind still couldn't get off her, my inner wolf kept howling with impatience. I now lost hope totally, I had probably made a mistake in tracing her, this was likely not her abode, it had been a mix-up.
From among the other dust lingering in the air, I could only differentiate a smell, one I knew belonged to no one else but Lily. I watched with a keen gaze as the gate of her house opened and she stepped out. I turned in order for her not to see my face, she might have not seen me last night, but I felt it was wiser to cover my face.
As I stood outside Lily's house, my anticipation grew, hoping to catch a glimpse of her once more. The hours felt like an eternity, but finally, the gate opened, and she emerged. Wanting to observe her without being noticed, I concealed my face and trailed her discreetly.
My wolf urged me to approach her and reveal our bond, but I resisted. Instead, I observed her from afar as she gracefully moved, her hips swaying enticingly. A potent attraction pulled me toward her, making it difficult to resist the temptation to reveal myself.
"Walk up to her and tell her she is your mate," my wolf declared from within me, I opted out of the request immediately. No. I wasn't going to tell her immediately, I would watch her closely. I wouldn't tell her immediately, I would, foremost, watch her and find out where she's headed. I followed her in her stride, elegance was evident in her way of moving. Her hips swerved and that triggered my attention, I felt drawn to her by a bond stronger than our mate bond, this attraction was potent and thickly rich. I felt the attraction slowly feeding on me as I resisted the urge.
I watched, from the corners of my eyes, as she turned off in a direction of a poorly bricked road. I struggled with walking on the rough ground, she seemed to be walking perfectly without any grudges. I leapt in her direction and tried closely not to make too much of a noise, so she wouldn't turn back and find out that I was following her. She wasn't pathetic to him anymore, she seemed to be proud and confident, and those two features I'd fancied in her. I followed her with every step she took, every twist and every turn.
I watched as she halted in her confident stride and walked off into what he was surprised was a coffee shop. He followed her immediately running as he tried to meet with her, but the crowd of people going out and coming in this coffee shop was alarming. I followed, pushing physically, as I shoved off a man who had been nothing else but an obstacle. The man had yelled out something incoherent, but now it didn't matter, all that matters to me right now is meeting with Lily.
As I stepped into the coffee shop, I searched for lily with my gaze and immediately found her at the far end of the counter, standing beside a bulky masculine figure. I pushed forward and had settled down on a close by table not too far from me to enable me in eavesdropping on their conversation.
"Why are you late to work again, Lily?" The bulky man had bawled as Lily staggered back a little in fear. The man was her boss, it was obviously clear, with the authority in his tone and the aura, the point was unarguable. Storms of veins seemed to strike at a side of his head.
Lily's lips twisted. "I am truly sorry sir, I promise you that it won't repeat itself again." she begged the man with a quaver in her voice.
"Oh spill the beans Lily, one more time and I promise you a sack letter." the man threatened. Lily's face was now etched in fear, the reverence she had for her boss was now too clear.
"Get back to work this instant, or I'll change my mind." he rasped as she rushed towards a door I knew for sure led to the back kitchen. As she jammed the door, I had jolted out of my thoughts, I looked around my surroundings and planned on what to do next. I tried to force out an idea from my head, but nothing came. I looked down at the mahogany table in front of me, I inhaled the nice smell of coffee in the air- its brown thick smell had pushed into my nostrils. The smell of coffee had awoken an idea, one that would get me to see Lily face to face.
It was simple.
I just have to order a cup of coffee and Lily would be the one to deliver it to my table.
Then another thought came.
What if she wasn't the one to deliver it?
I would bribe someone to make sure she delivers it, I turned my head and searched for a nearby worker. I looked around and finally found a petite blonde lady taking orders from a couple whose table was the next to his.
"Hello." I waved at her as she faced him and glided off in the direction of my table, she paused when she was close enough.
"Hello sir, how may I help you?" She inquired with a quirk of her brows, she gazed deeply into the book in her hand in which she was scribbling down the orders of customers.
"Well," he started and went on, "Can you help me place an order for a cup of coffee and I need it to be delivered by Lily?"
"Why lily? We have other people to attend to you and besides, she is not available." The lady's face seemed to be starred in a deep frown. She looked as if she were offended by his words.
I dipped my hands in my pockets and brought out a chip of gold from my pockets, I threw it on the table as her eyes lit up with a fire of amazement burning wildly in her eyes. The lady's frown broke into a smile, she stretched her fingers and took the gold chip on the table and had inspected closely whether it was real gold.
After a minute of close inspection, she dropped the gold in her pockets and had said cheerfully, "Lily will be with you shortly."
I watched as she disappeared off into the door that led to the back kitchen. The door had opened some minutes later and Lily had walked out with a tray of coffee gripped tightly in her hands. She had walked in the direction of my table as she had dropped the tray on his hand and was about to leave when I caught her hand, stopping her in her tracks. As I held her, a ripe man-woman tension leapt from both our bodies, electricity sparked from within me.
Her eyes sparkled, shock swirled in a dark gathering, the glass cup in her hands fell down as it broke into pieces. Her eyes sparkled with surprise, and in my trance, the cup she held slipped from her grasp and shattered. The tension between us was palpable, leaving us both speechless and electrified.
"I am genuinely sorry-" she apologized, but I was too lost to respond.
