Chapter 1 Her Loud Piercing Scream

The darkness was all she could see. She tried to find her way through the void.

"Lyra." She heard her name.

She turned, "Dad, is that you?"

"Lyra run!" She heard the same voice again.

"Dad, is that you?! Dad!" She called out to confirm if it was truly her dad's voice she heard.

"Lyra!" She heard her name again.

She quickly sprang up from the bed, gasping for breath and looking blindly around until her eyes settled on Imogen, who stood over her, with concern and worry etched on her face.

"Are you okay?" Imogen asked her.

"What happened?"

"I don't know, I came in and found you trash-talking in your sleep".

"Oh!" She sighed as Imogen went to open the curtains.

She came back to sit on the edge of the bed. "I was worried because you never ever sleep well".

Lyra gave her a small smile "I am fine, don't worry".

"If you say so, remember you promised me that we were going to spend some time together. You have always been so busy that you never have time for me". Imogen said, stretching her body on the bed.

"Yeah! I can't wait to have some free time alone with my sister". She replied, reaching out to pull Imogen's cheeks.

Just then, a maid entered and bowed, "Good morning, Luna Lyra. The elders are asking for you in the council room".

Imogen groaned, "See, another meeting. Why can't they just stay off and give you a break?"

Lyra slapped her hands lightly. "Imogen! They are our elders".

"But they don't allow you to have time for yourself".

"It's okay, I will be right back". Lyra said, turning to the maid, "Tell them I will join them soon".

The maid nodded and bowed out of the room. She got off her bed and hurried into the bathroom.

"Does this mean you won't be with me today?"

"Of course, I will. The meeting should be short". Lyra answered from the shower.

"But you don't even know what they want to talk about" Imogen asked, standing up from the bed.

"Whatever it is, it definitely won't be long, I promise you, my dear sister".

"You always do this, but you never fulfill it". Imogen grumbled under her breath, leaving the room in irritation.

"Imogen?" When she received no reply, Lyra shook her head and continued her shower.

She would calm down, she thought. "I can always make the apple pie she has always loved, to apologize for not spending time with her".

After some minutes, she was dressed and went on her way to the council room. As the Luna of the Solstice, she was required to dress regally at all times and that was exactly how she looked in her white dress dyed with pink round the edges, her brown hair was plaited to the side with little pink flower pins on it. That was obviously just a disguise as she ran down the corridors of the mansion. She waved to some women who bowed as she sped past them. Bursting into the room breathing in pants, she greeted the elders.

"I am so sorry for being late".

But none of them returned her greetings, as the tension on their faces was evident.

Only Elder Alan gave her a little smile in return. They stood up and waited for her to sit before taking their seats.

"You ran here, didn't you?" Elder Karena, a strict-looking woman in her late fifties and hair tied up in a tight bun, asked her.

"No, I didn't, I just walked faster than usual". Lyra replied, with a mischievous smile on her face. Karena may look strict, but deep inside her, she was a big sweet soul.

The only elder she was scared of out of all eight of them, was the elder Alfred and that was because she had seen him fight. He was seated opposite her on the long table dressed in a three-piece black suit, his crown of black hair streaked with strands of white was slicked back, giving him the finished look of the boss of a huge company, which he was anyway.

"Why are you all looking so tense? Why did you call me here"?

"The Lycan king is coming tonight." Alan dropped the bombshell.

She visibly paled all of a sudden. "What! That can't be true. How do you know he is coming tonight? It's been months since he attacked".

"Four months to be precise, but that doesn't mean he isn't going to come back". Elder Sylvan said solemnly.

"But what makes you so sure?" She asked, standing up from her seat.

"Elleen had a vision". Alfred said, with a hard edge in his voice.

"That's it? That's what we are banking on? A vision?!" She said exasperatedly.

"My visions always come true". Elleen huffed.

She sat back on her chair, "You are right, I'm sorry. I am just so troubled. So what are we going to do?" She asked, eyes on the leader of the fighters, the elder Sylvan, who refused to meet her eyes.

"That's why we are here. Nothing more". Alfred said.

"What do you mean by nothing? You can't be serious!" She shouted.

"Lyra, we are no match for the Lycan king. We are just tiny wolves". Alan said.

"So, do we just do whatever he wants?"

"Yes," Karena replied.

"We can't just do whatever he wants".

"Yes we can! You are still too young to be making decisions like this. It is what we have decided and since we are here to guide you, you will do exactly as we say. We promised your father that no harm would come to you." Alfred interrupted.

"You are all unbelievable". Lyra said, shaking her head in anger at the resignation in their eyes. She stormed out, slamming the door as she left.

She entered her room burning with anger. How dare he treat her like a child? She was Luna!

And what have you done for your people? A little voice said in her head.

She slumped on her bed, it was right. She couldn't even protect them from the Lycan king's attack. She should look for Imogen, she would support her decision.

But Imogen was nowhere to be found, so she went around the pack doing every job she could place her hands on, just to get some distractions away from the current situation.

After a hectic afternoon, she went to her room to prepare for the attack. She heard a commotion from outside, and she went to the window to see what it was about; a man helping out the teenagers who had performed the coming of age ritual and were trying to get used to changing into their wolf. She felt a slight surge of jealousy. She remembered her first time. Everyone had expected her to be as strong as her parents but were disappointed when she couldn't shift into her wolf. She still didn't have a wolf, unlike her sister who changed into a very beautiful wolf with midnight black fur like her hair.

A maid entered the room and dropped a tray of strawberry flavored tea on the table.

She looked at the maid with a raised eyebrow because she hadn't asked for any tea.

"Elder Fabian asked me to bring it to soothe your nerves".

She sighed, they always took good care of her. They even knew what her favorite tea was. Taking the cup as she dismissed the maid, she turned back to the window to watch the newly transformed wolves. They were playing around, not listening to the instructor as they played with each other.

Suddenly feeling tired, she decided to just take a little nap. When she woke up, the moon hung low, casting its eerie glow over the dense forest that surrounded the Solstice Pack's territory. There was silence everywhere and she remembered the attack.

Shit! How could she have slept off!

She hurried down the stairs, hazel eyes seeing clearly in the dark. The pack's fate was in her hands, that was what she thought about, but the sight that awaited her stopped her in her own tracks.

There was blood everywhere. This wasn't the first time she had seen a sight like this, but she could never get used to that.

A chilling howl rang out, a sound that sent shivers down Lyra's spine. Without warning, he emerged from the shadows, eyes gleaming with sick glee as he saw what his soldiers had done.

Lyra took a step forward to confront him, but a hand snatched her back.

"Where do you think you are going?" Imogen whispered furiously to Lyra, eyes filled with fear.

"I have to stop him".

"You would be dead if you stepped out."

"I don't care! I refuse to surrender in despair". She may have said that last part a little bit loudly, because the door she was hiding behind suddenly tore from its hinges.

"Well, well, well. What do we have here"? The haunting voice said and she released a loud piercing scream.

Chapter 2 Fight For Your Man!

The creature in front of her was the most monstrous thing she had ever seen. The Lycan king had never showed up for any of his raids, so this was the first time she had seen him. She took a step backwards, trembling in fear as he stretched out his claws towards her. Elder Alfred stepped in between them, distracting him away from her.

"How dare you step in my way". He roared, using his hand to sweep him into a tree that was some meters away.

"Who do you think you are? Nobody stands in front of the Lycan king!!" He growled, coming close to the elder's crumpled body. He placed his leg on his back, his claws digging into his skin. He laughed, as the elder shouted in pain.

Every other person was on the ground with heads bowed except Lyra, who covered her mouth, but couldn't stop the whimpers from escaping.

"This is so much fun. This pack is the most interesting I have ever met. And that's because of you". He said, while his yellow eyes were on Lyra. Even if he had a mask on his face, she could see those eyes.

He turned to where the elders were.

"You know what I want, right? You better do it, else I will feed your precious little tiny Luna your dead bodies." He finished turning away from them. He gave another howl and walked into the dark forest. His soldiers were at his heels.

Lyra fell to the floor as her legs no longer had the strength to keep her up.

Elder Fabian rushed to Elder Alfred's side, asking for help from the other healers. Imogen came close to Lyra and hugged her. "If you had only listened to me, the elder Alfred wouldn't have been injured. I know you want to be brave and all, but sometimes you've got to think of others and the consequences". She said, patting Lyra's body.

"Someone should take Luna to her room". Imogen ordered.

Lyra couldn't remember how she got to her room, all she could remember was the monster bathed in blood and its sinister eyes.

It took her days to recover from that trauma, and the elder Alfred was now feeling better. His wound was healing up nicely, all thanks to the elder Fabian's help. She decided to go see Damian. Her fiancé. Nobody knew about Damian, not even Imogen. It was her own little secret.

She met him one night when she had sneaked out of the house. She had a favorite spot she used to hide when she was little. It was an abandoned lighthouse that nobody went to.

As she got close to it, she heard a beautiful sound and, because of the enthralling tune and curiosity, she entered and saw a blond-haired man playing the flute. He looked like the Apollo she had seen in the book from the pack's library.

His eyes were closed as he played the instrument and when he stopped to open them, she literally let out a sigh.

"Hey, I didn't know I had an audience". He said, smiling at her.

"Oh, please don't stop because of me".

"I can stop anything in the world because of the most beautiful sight in front of me".

A deep red blush rose on her cheeks and she smiled shyly.

"So what are you doing here?" She asked, expertly changing the subject.

"This is my hideout".

"This is mine too," she said, beaming at him.

They smiled, staring into each other's eyes until the sound of the crashing wave broke the spell.

She asked if she would meet him again and he said yes. That was the beginning of their beautiful friendship which now turned into love, because the last time they met he told her that she was his mate. That he hadn't wanted to tell her because she couldn't feel it either. Now, she was going to tell her pack about her secret today. She was sorry that she was leaving them, but maybe it was for the best. She had no idea how to rule the pack. She had done a bad job so far.

She sighted him from afar with his golden hair shining like spun gold in the sun. She ran to hug him from behind, inhaling his musky scent. He turned to face her with a gentle smile on his face, and kissed her on her forehead like she was his most fragile being in the world.

Smiling up at him, "Are you ready to meet my family?"

"Of course, it's an honor to meet them, so why shouldn't I be ready?"

She held his hands and led him straight to the elder Alfred's house where the elders were having a meeting because of his health.

She met them seated in the living room and greeted them before introducing Damian.

"I have decided to get myself a mate". She announced, with her voice steady, but her heart pounding against her ribs.

"How is that possible?!" Alfred boomed.

The whole room fell silent, every one of the elders looked at her like she had grown a double head.

She didn't care, except for Damian's presence beside her, which sent sparks of electricity through her veins. The elders exchanged glances, their expressions unreadable. Damian, sensing the tension, squeezed her hands reassuringly. But as the elders requested Damian to leave them for a private discussion, Lyra's heart sank.

"Yes, Damian is my mate". She added, when he had left the room feeling so alone without him.

"How do you know that?" Elder Karena said.

"He said he felt the mate bond".

"And you believe that". Elder Fabian scoffed.

"You don't have a wolf, Lyra. You are just a weak Luna who is so easily deceived". Alfred said. The words stung so much, she tried to blink back the tears.

She flared up, choosing anger over the sadness she was feeling. "And is that my fault? I don't even know who my mother was and these days I hardly remember the face of my father. I couldn't summon my wolf when I did the ritual and I don't understand why. I have tried everything. I just want a chance to be happy. Do you know how it feels to have responsibilities on your shoulders, and you know you can't bear them because you are weak? I deserve happiness, you can't just keep me here treating me like a spoiled child".

"You certainly behave like one". Elder Elleen interrupted.

"Don't think I didn't know you put sleeping pills in my tea during the Lycan King's attack". She snapped at her.

"You don't even know where he is from?" Elder Karen said in a patronizing voice.

"He is the Alpha of the Raven moon pack".

"I have never heard of the name before". An elder said.

"Love blinds you, child," another elder remarked, his tone softer but not less firm. "We have your best interests at heart. You must forget about him."

Lyra's heart shattered into a million pieces at their words. How could she forget about Damian, the one who had captured her heart and soul? The one whose touch set her ablaze with desire?

"I know what is best for me. I cannot forget him". She declared, "I will not". And with tears in her eyes, she turned and ran out of the room, with her yellow dress flowing behind her.

But before she could retreat to the comfort of her room, a familiar voice stopped her in her tracks.

"Lyra, wait for me."

Turning around, Lyra found Imogen, her adopted sister and best friend, standing before her.

Imogen's eyes sparkled with determination, a silent promise of support and encouragement.

"Fight for your man, Lyra". Imogen urged, her voice fierce with determination. "Love knows no boundaries, no rules. Follow your heart, no matter what anyone else says."

With Imogen's words echoing in her mind, Lyra squared her shoulders, her resolve strengthened by her sister's unwavering support. She would fight for Damian, for their love, against all odds.

It doesn't matter what the elders say, Damian was hers.

Chapter 3 Heart Beating Wildly

When she had come out, she couldn't find Damian at all. It was either that they had probably sent him away, or he left since he felt like Lyra's people didn't like him. So, after Lyra finished talking to Imogen, she went into her room to send Damian a message. Bouncing on the bed, she texted him on the mobile chat app.

Hey, I am so sorry for today. Please, come meet me in the usual place.

When the message ticked read, but he didn't reply, she sighed, she couldn't blame him. He must have felt so angry and insulted, that's why she should try to meet him tonight and explain things calmly to him.

When it became dark in the secluded shadows, bathed in the soft glow of moonlight, Lyra escaped through her window, climbing down the tree with light and stealth.

She raced to the lighthouse, her heart beating wildly, hoping that Damian was there. And he was there, truly.

Damian, tall and lean with piercing blue eyes that seemed to hold the secrets of the universe, approached her with a confident stride. His blond hair tousled by the gentle night breeze framed his chiseled jawline, and the faint scent of cedar clung to him, intoxicating and alluring.

Lyra couldn't stop her tears as she ran into his embrace. She wore a simple gown that clung to her curves, accentuating her every movement with a grace that left Damian breathless.

"I am so sorry, Damian. I had no idea they would react that way. They are always so gentle, loving and kind".

"People reveal their nature when things don't go their way, Lyra" Damian whispered into her hair, "Do not fear, my love. I will fight for you, no matter what."

She gazed up at him, her heart overflowing with love and gratitude. "Oh, Damian," she murmured, her voice barely a whisper. "I cannot bear the thought of losing you."

"And you won't lose me, because in your eyes, I see the reflection of my soul, bound to yours for eternity. So I won't let you go".

Damian held her close, his embrace both tender and possessive, he cradled her face in his hands, and before she could react, he planted a soft and calming kiss on her forehead. This was the first time she had been kissed on the forehead, the first time that Damian truly expressed, without words, how much he cared for her, even though she caught signs of his lust in his eyes during their past rendezvous.

Suddenly, he stopped and looked into her eyes. Lyra saw a flash of frustration, but he released her and stepped back. She took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart. "What do you want from me?" She asked, trying to keep her voice steady.

He ran his hands through his hair, his eyes never leaving hers. "I want to help you," he said, his voice low and rough. Lyra raised an eyebrow, unsure if she could trust him. But there was something in his eyes that made her believe him.

"I don't need your help, Damian," she said, trying to sound brave. But her voice trembled, betraying her fear.

He took a step closer, his eyes filled with concern. "Yes, you do need my help, even if you won't admit it," he said. "You are in danger, Lyra. And I'm the only one who can protect you. I won't see any harm befall you without doing anything to save you."

Lyra shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts. She didn't know what to believe. But as she looked into his eyes, she saw something there that made her trust him. She nodded, and he reached out to her.

Together, they walked to the soft moss in the room, and he helped her sit down. Lyra looked up at him, feeling her heart beat faster. "Thank you," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

He smiled and sat down beside her, his eyes never leaving hers. "You're safe now," he said, his voice full of conviction. Lyra nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. She knew she could trust him, and that he would do everything in his power to protect her against all odds.

As they sat there in silence, Lyra felt a sense of peace wash over her. She knew that she was in good hands, and that this stranger that suddenly became her whole world would do everything he could to keep her safe. And as she looked into his eyes, she saw something there that made her heart skip a beat. Something that made her feel like she was home.

"I'm sorry, I am just not ready yet. We can always take our romance slow, after the mating ceremony. We can do whatever we want then. I won't stop you because you will become mine then, and I will be all yours." She said, placing her hands on his face, looking as if he was angry with her.

He placed his hands over hers, "I understand, I am sorry for my actions. I was being too hasty. You were looking so beautiful and I just couldn't control myself anymore".

She blushed and stepped away from him. Holding her short and skimpy dress with her hands, "I will convince the elders and text you when they finally give in". She promised him an assurance before turning to leave.

She ran back hoping nobody would notice that she was gone, and climbed back into her room. She laid down on the bed, blushing as she remembered the night's events. She was sorry she couldn't continue or give into Damian's lust as she noticed in his body movements, but then she wasn't going to get cold feet on the day they would finally mate.

She was going to use all her manipulation skills on the elders, and they would just have to accept.

She smiled at herself with so much joy in her heart. She couldn't wait to finally be his mate.
