Chapter 1

Jessica

She's typing away like a robot without a break, ignoring the pain in her fingers. Her heterochromic eyes are fixed on the screen while her mind simultaneously memorizes the report.

It's nearly midnight and the precinct is quite empty. Jessica yawns and takes a large sip of her coffee before typing away like a mad woman again. Her usually silky red hair is tied into a messy knot. She has been working nonstop for the past three days and didn't even return home to rest. The recent case has been taking up all her time and energy but this is exactly what she needs after her breakup.

Don't think about that! She scolds herself. Just write the damn report!

"Detective Marshall!"

Jessica springs to her feet and instantly addresses her supervisor, Captain Brooke. Captain Brooke is a man in his early fifties with a smooth bald head and a strict demeanor. He's known for his adherence to rules and expects efficiency from all the cops under him. Jessica is one of his most trusted employees and despite her young age, he assigns all the high profile cases to her.

"How are we coming up on the Jolene Valley Murder?" He asks.

"I've filed all the evidence and also submitted the report to the DA," Jessica states. "He received them and will proceed to file the charges against the suspect tomorrow morning."

"And the Drainer case?"

"The autopsy results show no signs of violent trauma or force on the victim's body," Jessica reports. "However, there are two marks on the neck. Those look like needle marks but there's no sign of the blood being sucked through it."

"What about the report?"

"I'm almost done with it. I'll put it on your desk beforeI leave."

Brooke nods, impressed and wishes only for the other detectives to be as efficient and smart as her. Jessica returns to her work. She's engrossed in her work, not caring about anything else. Several times, her mind tries to dart back to the painful moment of her breakup with Jonathan, but she takes deep breaths before continuing to work.

Finally, after another hour, she's done with her report. She carefully files it and places it on the Captain's desk. He seems to have left already.

She heads to the toilet to freshen up a little. Splashing water on her face, she studies her face. Her one eye is a dark hazel color and the other one is bright green, which gives her a rather unique appeal. However, her usually smooth skin is pale and pearly. There are hints of dark circles under her eyes and her lips are dry. The past few weeks have been hard on her and it shows on her face now. People say that she has an angelic appearance, innocent and pure.

Now, it looks as if all the glow is gone.

That rat b*stard! Jessica curses at her ex. Her beauty and brain couldn't keep her ex-boyfriend faithful to her at all. Jonathan was her boyfriend from high school and they even went to the police academy together after graduating high school. Everyone expected them to get married.

Until the son of a b*tch cheated on her.

Jessica sighs and returns to her desk to pick up another file to report on when someone snatches it away from her.

"What the-"

"No more work!" A ginger haired girl exclaims. Jessica sighs as her best friend, Amy Bennett, frowns at her. Amy is in the final year of medical school and will start her internship soon. With a cropped pixie cut and sparkling dark eyes, Amy is cheerful and boisterous. Despite her hectic schedule, she tries to keep up with her social life because in her words, "No play and only work makes people dull. Especially Jessica."

"Hey!" Jessica scowls. "I need to finish that!"

"No, you don't. You haven't even started this report!" Amy claims. "You're coming with me."

"Where?"

"To the club of course!"

Jessica shakes her head. "No," she says. "I don't wanna go to any club right now. I have work-"

"You've been off-duty for hours! I know your schedule by heart, Jess. You're just trying to drown yourself in work to get over that sleazeball! This isn't healthy. Just come with me and have some fun, okay?"

Amy makes a pleading face which makes Jessica sigh. "Fine!" She concedes. "I'll come."

"Yaii!"

Jessica puts her gun away and logs out of her computer before grabbing her bag.

"Let's go," she sighs.

"Are you seriously gonna go to a club dressed in that oversized shirt?" Amy groans as she follows her friend. "Don't you wanna stop over at home and put on something sexy?"

"No."

Amy groans but doesn't say anything. At least Jessica will be able to loosen up after a few drinks.

They take a cab to the nearest club. Once out of the precinct, Jessica is finally starting to feel a heavy weight lifting from her shoulders. She unties her hair and leans back on the seat.

"I'm swamped," she mutters.

"You need to give yourself time to process your feelings," Amy says in a sympathetic tone. "Jonathan cheated on you. He threw away everything for a skank and he doesn't deserve you at all. You shouldn't punish yourself with work. You need to have fun and show him that you can live without him! After all, you're the youngest detective in the force! Within two years, you've accomplished what no one else could!"

Jessica flashes her a small smile. Even though she's just twenty two years old, Jessica already gained a strong reputation as a competent officer. Having graduated from the Police Academy at twenty, Jessica joined the police force as an uniformed officer. In her first year, she worked in a high profile case involving the death of a supermodel and managed to put the criminal behind bars. She's skilled in MMA and even aced her exams. She was recently promoted to the detective rank, a news which made her father very proud.

"We hardly celebrated your promotion so the drinks are on me tonight!" Amy declares. "And we'll check out all the hot guys too, alright? Who knows, one of them might just sweep you off your feet!"

"Uh huh and he'll run off once he sees my gun."

"If you're lucky you might just get to see his *gun*-"

"Amy!"

Both the girls start to giggle loudly as they reach the club. The bouncers check their IDs and let them in. As soon as she enters the club, Jessica is frozen to her spot.

A strangely intoxicating scent of musky sandalwood hits her. Her heart is beating fast as the scent engulfs her senses, almost hypnotizing her. She can hear a faint whisper in her head but she can't make out the words. The scent is too strong, too addictive. It's pulling her and a fire is burning in her stomach which can be quenched only by this scent.

"Jess?"

"Huh? Amy's voice brings her out of her reverie.

"What's wrong?" Amy asks.

"Do you smell that?" Jessica inquires.

"Smell what?"

"That...musky sandalwood..."

Amy is confused. Seeing her expression, Jessica shakes her head.

"Nevermind. Let's go and grab a drink."

Chapter 2

Kai

A sleek Maybach silently drives through the bustling streets. The soundproof glass blocks away all the sounds of the human world enabling him to work in peace. Sitting at the back of the car is a man in his early thirties, holding a file. His long, elegant fingers slowly turn the pages.

"Your Majesty, are you sure the vampires will attack the club tonight?" the driver asks him. "The informer may have given the information, but it seems highly unlikely."

The man shuts the file and contemplates hard. Even in the darkness of the car, his presence commands attention. His rugged allure can make anyone spellbound with passion and lust while his piercing golden eyes can decipher anything with one glance. His perfectly tailored suit highlights his muscular build and his envious toned physique adds to his devilish charm.

His meticulously styled dark blonde hair is parted to the left, giving him a manly allure. He stays still as he thinks hard, looking like an Adonis statue. The solitude of the car cannot answer the complex questions he's pondering on, but his poise is blended with enigma and an air of mystery. His golden ring is pierced right above his eyebrow, further adding to his seductive aura.

"Were we mistaken?" He asks in a low baritone. "Or is it a trap?"

They reach the club but the car circles the building to enter through the VIP car park. Several guards salute the man as he steps out of the car. He slightly sniffs the air.

There are no vampires here, he deduces. The information was wrong.

Shaking his head, he's about to leave but one of the guards approaches him.

"Mr. Kai Vronsky," he begins. "Our boss wants to take this opportunity to meet with you regarding a business proposition."

"Tell him it can wait," Kai says in a cold tone.

"Sir, please! It'll be a short meeting. He's really desperate to save the club and-"

Kai's steely gaze shuts him up. For years the club's owner has been trying to meet him personally and every time, Kai rejects him. He has no business with humans unless it suits him.

His driver, Harper Henderson, quickly approaches Kai.

"Your majesty, the vampires may not be here now but they might arrive any moment," he whispers. "We shouldn't leave right away."

Kai mulls over this. Henderson is right. The vampires might attack later and they'll have to be prepared for it. He checks his watch.

It's nearly 12 AM. Maybe he should wait and see what happens.

"Alright," he nods. "I'll meet with your boss."

The guards look relieved and escort him inside. The club is packed with people either drinking or dancing. Some are kissing and vigorously making out in secluded corners. The music is too loud and the humans are crazily swaying to it. Kai blocks out the boisterous noises but is alert for any vampire which may be lurking. He can't smell their foul smell anywhere at the moment but vampires are unpredictable. Moreover, if any of the humans have been bitten then they may be in the process of turning into one. Unless they turn into a complete vampire, it'll be impossible to distinguish between a human and the creature of the dark.

He's led to the owner's office. The owner is a stoic, cheerful old man who welcomes Kai to his workplace. Kai sits and listens to the man patiently as he goes on and on about a profitable deal they can make. He knows the deal won't be profitable at all but he extends his cool politeness to the man.

After an hour, the man finally says, "Would you like to have a drink before leaving? I'll treat you to my finest malt!"

"That is alright," Kai says in a formal tone. "I'll be off. We have an important meeting in the morning. Send the proposal to my office and we'll discuss it soon."

He slightly bows his head and leaves the office. Once he reaches the stairs leading to the crowded bar, he calls his beta, Jayden Henver.

"Your Majesty!" Jayden greets him. "Did you find the vampires?"

"They're not here," Kai states. "We were given the wrong information. I suspect the so-called informer is working as a double agent to distract us. Keep an eye on him and-"

A light breeze brushes against him as a sweet scent swirls him. It smells like sweet strawberries with a hint of honey, an almost homely aroma which is making him go crazy. The beast inside him is howling, desperately aching to follow the scent.

"Mate!" he mutters.

Kai grins. After all these years, he finally found his mate. For a long time, he waited for her and now, he found her. His wolf is crying and howling in joy.

The Lycan King finally found his Queen.

Kai follows the scent, trying to calm the manic madness in him. He finally spots her near the bar, drinking. For a moment, he stares at her in astonishment.

The chaotic noises are dimmed out by her tranquil beauty which captivates the heart of anyone who glances at her. Under the dimly lit ambience of the bar, she's the vision of elegance. She's sitting gracefully on the bar stool with an emanating aura. Her long dark hair cascades around her pearly skin in loose waves. The soft lights fall on her, creating an enchanting sensation which can make anyone crazy.

But he can't help staring at those eyes. Those mesmerizing eyes. Her one deep hazel eye holds warmth and kindness while her other eye is a passionate shade of green, as if alluding to her quiet determination. Her high cheekbones and delicate jawline gives her an innocent charm. She slowly takes a long sip from her glass as she smiles radiantly.

A human? He wonders. He can't sense any wolf in her but he frowns when he smells something else. It's faint, almost negligible to normal werewolves but to himself. He can't pinpoint what it is but something tells him that this girl is not an ordinary human.

And he must not let her go.

Chapter 3

Jessica

"What's wrong?" Amy asks her. Jessica looks distracted and confused for some reason.

"Nothing!" She claims. "It's just..."

The scent. She can't get the goddamn scent out of her head! In fact, she can smell it even stronger now and her mind is going crazy. There's an inexplicable urge within her to find the source of that addictive aroma and...and...

What the hell am I thinking? She scowls inwardly.

"I need another drink!" Jessica declares. The bartender serves her another glass and she chugs it down.

"Woah! Slow down!" Amy laughs. "The night is still young. We can still have a lot of fun. Although, you may start your fun earlier..."

She points behind Jessica. The latter turns around and her jaw nearly drops. Sitting across the room is the most gorgeous man she has ever laid eyes on!

Jessica's heart instantly skips several beats. He's dressed in a suit but the piercing above his eye makes him a combination of a dangerous gentleman who can command the entire room in a second if he wants to. The man half glances at her with his beautiful eyes and their gazes lock at each other.

Can looks really kill? She wonders. Because this man probably can.

His one gaze is making her cheeks blush. She's suddenly conscious of her baggy clothes and curses herself for not dressing well. The man is dressed in a refined manner, his every movement so graceful and sophisticated.

And here she is looking like a bum!

"If I don't listen to your fashion advice next time, do me a favor and shoot me with my gun!" Jessica groans.

"You should shoot your closet instead," Amy sighs. "But I think that man is staring at you. Damn! He's hot!"

Jessica hides her face in embarrassment. Amy inches closer and says, "You know, you can try flirting with him a bit. It won't hurt anyone."

"Amy, I look like a mess now!" Jessica hisses.

"Jess, you're beautiful and you know it. If you hadn't wasted your time with that dumb Jonathan, then you could've had many more suitors! This is your chance. Just try and flirt with the bar hottie!"

"Bar hottie?" Jessica echoes but Amy ignores her as she goes through her purse.

"Here," she says, handing Jessica her compact makeup powder and lipstick. "That's all I have right now. Just go, put them on, and you'll look fabulous. Just go!"

"Alright!" Jessica exclaims and runs off to the ladies room. She quickly puts on a bit of makeup and checks herself out in the mirror.

"This will have to do," she sighs. She's not looking drop dead gorgeous like the stranger outside but at least she feels better about herself. Flirting with a stranger seems a bit scary to her especially after her breakup but Amy is right. She can't keep running away from the joys of life because of one douchebag.

Feeling a bit more confident, she heads outside. She's walking towards the bar when a voice calls her.

"Jess?"

Jessica freezes. Oh no oh no oh no! She screams inwardly.

Her worst fears came true. She turns around to meet a dark haired man of her age with a stocky physique and dull black eyes. His hair is tousled with front bangs which makes him look much younger than his age (Jessica suspects he's trying to pass off as a teenager) and he's dressed in a pair of baggy jeans with holes cut into it. His t-shirt is bright red and the odd combination of bright sneakers is making her confused.

This is her ex-boyfriend?

For a moment, Jessica is confused. Jonathan used to dress in casual shirts and long pants. He also added light red streaks on his hair, probably after their breakup. Jessica tries to find a hint of his old self but there's none. He's trying too hard to look younger, holding on to his evasive youth.

Jonathan is chewing gum as he looks at her from top to bottom. "You really let yourself go, huh?" He taunts her with a grin. "Look at yourself!"

"You're in no position to be the fashion police given that you're dressed as if a clown vomited on you!" Jessica retorts. She's absolutely disgusted by him and his mere presence makes her want to gag.

"You still have that venomous tongue. No wonder we broke up!"

"I'm the one who broke up with you," Jessica replies coolly. "Because you were cheating on me with one of your students."

Jonathan failed at the academy so he had to drop out and started to teach college students privately. It was during this time, he met a nineteen year old and cheated on Jessica with her. This went on for months until Jessica found the romantic texts on his phone and threw him out of the apartment they shared.

Now that she's seeing him like this, she realizes that she was truly blind to his faults.

"You think you're so mighty because of your job and your promotion?" Jonathan snarls. "You're just a lonely and shabby woman of no value nor birth-"

SMACK!

Jessica slaps him so hard that his cheek starts to bleed.

"What the f*ck?" He squeals like a pig. "You little-"

Jessica slaps him again, this time even harder. Jonathan staggers backwards.

"You f*cking crazy woman!" He yells. "No wonder I cheated on you! You're just crazy and-"

But Jessica isn't listening because she's once again hit by that addictive scent. Instinctively, she turns to find the gorgeous man from the bar. He puts his hand around her shoulder and pulls her close.

"Is he hurting you?"

His words are low, almost like a whisper. Jessica holds her breath as his deep voice penetrates her soul, making her want to hear him talk more. The scent is undeniably his, as alluring and seductive as him. She can't help but stare at him, her senses clouded by him.

"Who the f*ck is he?" Jonathan growls. He's suspicious of them. They're standing too close to each other, almost in an intimate manner.

Hearing his irritating voice makes Jessica want to slap him again but she controls herself. She puts her arm around the stranger's waist.

"He's my boyfriend," she announces. "We're together now."

Jonathan stares in shock. "We've only been broken for a few weeks and you're already seeing someone else?" He yells. "You sl*t-"

Before Jessica can react, the man walks up to Jonathan. His masculine aura is intimidating everything else around him, the command in his voice stronger than steel.

The man raises his hand and Jonathan cowers, expecting to be hit. To his surprise, the man takes out a handkerchief and starts to dab the blood on Jonathan's cheek.

"Every word a man speaks is the mirror of his true character," the man says with a slight accent. "And any man who cannot use civilized words to talk with a lady is no man at all, but leads a fickle existence of lies."

Jonathan winces when the man presses the handkerchief hard on his skin. "You could not cherish her like a treasure," he goes on. "But you are becoming jealous when someone else treats her like a Queen. I see your mind is as silly as the clothes you are wearing."

"You b*stard-" Jonathan curses but the man's sharp gaze makes him falter. Jessica watches in awe as the man destroys Jonathan with a few more words.

"The girl you came with," the man goes on. "The one waiting on the dance floor for you. She must be around...eighteen? I wonder if her ID has been checked properly."

Jessica is shocked to hear that. Eighteen? Is he dating another one? And brought her to a club?

"W-what the hell are you t-t-talking about-" Jonathan stammers. "She's 22!"

"Let the guards decide that."

Jonathan suddenly sprints off in fear. Jessica is about to run after him but the stranger grabs her arm and says, "Don't worry. The girl is already under the custody of the guards and they'll catch your ex as well. Let them handle it."

"Y-you knew about him?" Jessica asks suspiciously. "How?"

The man studies her for a moment, a small grin playing on his lips. "I noticed that the man was following you to the ladies room. I also noticed that his partner was too young and simply alerted the guards before going after him to see what he was doing."

Jessica is still suspicious. Her instincts as a detective are tingling. The man seems too observant. Is he a criminal?

"You noticed too many details," she states curtly. ""Why? Why were you observing me? What do you want-"

"I found you exquisitely attractive and noticed every delicate move you made with ardent interest," he says outright. "Which is why I came after you."

Jessica is stunned and...flattered. Her heart comes to a standstill upon hearing his frank words and her brain is fumbling for words. People give her many compliments but this man's words are making her wild with desire.

"I see I've made you uncomfortable," he notes, a tinge of disappointment in his voice.

"N-no!" Jessica stutters. "I...I was just taken aback."

She tries to find something else to say.

"What's your name?" She finally asks.

"I am Kai Vronsky," he says. "And you are?"

"Jessica Marshall," she replies with a smile.

"Jessica..."

He says her name with surprising tenderness almost as if treasuring it. "Would you like to have a drink with me, Jessica?"

At that moment, Jessica's cell phone beeps. It's a text from Amy.

"Emergency assignment. Completely forgot about it! I'm heading home. Sorry!"

Jessica is in a dilemma. Should she go back home or should she stay here with this stranger? Her instincts are telling her to leave but she can't seem to let go of her attraction. It may just be a brief one but it's too strong.

Taking a deep breath, she decides to give in.

"Sure," she smiles. "I'd love to have a drink with you."
