Sarah's POV.
The bus pulled to a halt and its door opened and the passengers stepped out of the bus. My eyes scanned the new environment I found myself in quickly as I stepped out of the bus.
The place is a small town with people minding their business and doing their jobs diligently.
"This is what I need." I thought.
I held on tight to the bag on my left hand and began to walk further into the town. Tried to talk to some people but they treated me like I was a ghost.
"What is going on?" I paused to try to understand the situation.
"Lost or need something?" I heard a voice ask, teasingly.
At first, I didn't think he was talking to me until he patted my shoulder softly.
"Excuse me, young lady. Are you looking for something?"
His deep voice bellowed, cutting through my thoughts.
"Yes. I'm new here and everyone seem to be treating me like I don't exist."
"I'm sorry you have to go through that." He chuckled and this infuriated me.
He noticed it.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make a joke out of this. I was only trying to say this is how it's done here. You have to meet the leader, not us."
"So, who's the leader?" I asked and crossed my arm against my chest.
"She goes by the name Elise."
"Could you take me to her?"
"I'll only do that of you ask politely." He scoffed lightly.
I glared at him and rolled my eyes.
"Fine." I raised my hands in surrender. "Could you please take me to Mrs. Elise?" I sassed.
"Sure! With all pleasure." He responded with a smile.
He took the lead while I walked closer behind him, I watched him on admiration with each steps he took.
"He must be a kind person." I whispered to myself.
After some minutes of walking, we arrived at a almost ragged - looking apartment.
I thought I would be able to cope better when I get inside but the inside was worse. The stench coming from the house makes me feel very sickening and I could barely stand it.
"When will she be here?" I whispered to the man after we sat down for all five minutes.
"I'm sure she would be here soon." He said and I nodded.
Keeping my hopes high that Mrs. Elise would be a young woman, probably in her late forties. But my hopes were scattered when Mrs. Elise emerged from her room. She is a freaking old woman, probably a great grandmother.
She took a seat opposite us and stared at me in disbelief.
"She is the one." She mumbled.
I looked at the man beside me in confusion and shrugged, "What is going on? What is she saying?"
"Why have you come here?" She asked before the man could give me a reply.
"I'm new in this town I was actually hoping to settle down in a place better than where I was coming from. But this place certainly isn't for me. I'll like to take my leave now."
I grabbed my bag and made to leave but her next words hooked me.
"A werewolf disguised as human, aren't you tired of living like that?"
I was surprised how she knew I was a werewolf, I never told anyone about it. I tilted my headn a thought to reply her but I chose to ignore on a rethink and made to leave.
"You have been chosen to lead these people, are you just going to ignore them? For your own selfish interests?"
"I'm not selfish!" I snapped as I turned to her.
"You don't know what I've gone through, you have no idea what I had to sail through to be where I am right now. You have no right to judge me." I said, half yelling in an emotionally damaged tone.
She stood up and walked to me, her hand rest gently on my shoulder and gave it a soft reassuring squeeze as she stared deep into my eyes.
"I know it had not been easy but you want every single soul to go through that because you went through it? What would that make you? How would that make you feel? A champ?" She tried to talk me into leading the Pack but I wasn't going to buy that, even if it was for a penny.
"No, Mrs. Elise." I shoved her hand off my shoulder. "I came here to have peace, probably feel among with the rest of my kind. Not to lead a pack I know nothing about." I continued and made to leave.
I was close to grabbing the knob when Alex sprinted after me and held my had.
"Not to intrude in your personal life but this people have been expecting you for a long time. Are you going to let them down? Just like that?"
"I'm sorry........" It was at that point I realized that I didn't even know his name.
"Alexander. You can call me Alex." He helped me out.
"Sure." I nodded slightly but confidently. "I'm sorry, Alex but I'm not the kind of person you all think I am. I'm not up to the task and I'm sure I had been mistaken for someone else. Very soon, I know the real one who is to lead you would come and you all will have a happy ending." I paused to take a breath.
"If there's nothing more you two have to say, I would ask you excuse myself."
With this, I made my way out of the house. With angry thuds on the ground as I walked.
"What nonsense? Has a female ever become an Alpha?" I thought.
"Yes, you can be an Alpha as a female. You have been chosen by the Moon Goddess and there's nothing anyone can do to change that." Alex said as though he heard the question in my head.
I looked back at him and rolled my eyes as I began to walk faster.
"Hey!" He called after me.
With a sharp turn, I looked back at him.
"It's Sarah." I snapped, furiously.
"Fine, Sarah." I gripped my wrist and pulled me closer to him.
"I'm not here to talk you into becoming the Alpha. You're obviously stranded and need a place to sleep. Mind if I help you?"
"No, thanks." I sassed and wriggled my wrist out of his grip. "I would rather sleep on the street than sleep with a strange stranger like you." I sassed further and he burst into a loud laugh.
"What's funny?" My brow curved in confusion.
"I'm not going to ask you to sleep with me. Who wants to sleep with a proud and sassy girl like you?" He pouted his lips; it was the worst one I've ever seen.
"Really?" I scoffed in disbelief as I glared at him from head to toe.
However, he ignored me and continued.
"There's this woman I know who would be more than glad to take you in."
"Where is she?" A pinch of proud contorted in my quest.
"I could only take you there if you ask politely." He cornered me and this made me more furious.
But I'm the one who's in need, I have to calm down with him until I get what I want.
"Okay. May you please take me to her, Alex?" I asked politely but the expression didn't last as it was followed by a grin.
"It's getting dark. We'll get to her place soon if we leave now." He said with his head high up and he led the way.
I demonstrated to kick his gut but he looked back at me almost immediately; I was lucky not to get caught. And I forced a smile, followed him.
As we walked through the dark part of the woods, the clouds kept getting darker.
"Don't you think we need to walk faster? This is kind of creepy." I said with trembling lips.
He was about to give me a reply when we heard a loud roar. It seemed there was someone lurking in the woods but it didn't sound more like a werewolf.
"What is that?"
Sarah's POV
I almost froze at the loud sound of the growl, but I was not ready to die this way; especially not when I'm on my way to freedom.
The growl grew louder and closer to us, Alex took a defensive stance and gently shoved me behind his back to protect me.
"I can protect myself." I snapped, stood by his side and also took a defensive stance.
"This is someone dangerous, someone you should have never met. Not especially on your first day in this pack." He said in a whisper while his eyes scanned the areas frantically.
"Who is it?" I asked, but before he could give me a reply, the werewolf jumped behind me.
Instantly, he shifted to his human form and grabbed me by the neck.
"Let me go." I yelled at him and struggled to free myself, but he was way stronger than me.
"Long time no see, friend." The man let out a menacing howl.
"Let her go, Marcus." Alex gritted his teeth while still maintaining his stance.
"Oh! Is that how to greet an old friend?" He whined with a chuckle.
"We were never friends, so let her go now!" He let out the loudest growl I've ever heard.
"Fine!" Marcus raised his other free hand in surrender and pushed me to Alex.
I was almost choking by this time, and my breathing had become faint and shakily.
"What is it you want?"
"I sensed the new presence and decided to welcome her to the Pack."
"I'm not part of this pack." I snapped with rage.
"Oh! Is that it?" A disappointed, yet happy look sat comfortably on his face.
"Why don't you come join my pack then?" He added, and I looked at Alex.
"What does he mean? Who is he and what does he want?"
"I have no idea, too, he had been terrifying our pack for some time now."
"Really? You look so lame when you lie, Alex." He said to Alex and turned to me.
"Don't believe whatever they tell you in this pack, they are lairs and killers."
"So, it's you who I should believe?" I scoffed.
"Don't listen to him, he's dangerous and has been a threat to our pack." Alex countered Marcus.
"Can you two stop trying to get in my head?" I yelled at them.
"No, dearie. I'll never get in your head, but it would be in your best interest if you join force with me." His voice, this time, was serious and demanding.
"What is he talking about?" I turned to Alex, but he suddenly went mute.
"We both know why we want you. He's hiding something from you, but if you come to me, I'll open up to you."
Marcus sounded so convincing and to make things worse, Alex kept mute like he had suddenly lost his voice or something.
"What is this about, Alex? Say something!" I snapped.
"I don't know what he is talking about. We want to welcome you to our pack and if you know you can't trust us, it would be best you go with him."
At this point, I was confused about whom to trust, side with or choose. I knew I needed to take me time to know whose side I wanted to be on.
"Seem like someone is confused here." Marcus giggled. "I'll be back to know your choice then." He said and made to leave.
"What do you want from us?" Alex asked, and Marcus turned back to him.
"What is mine...... I want what is mine." He gritted, but I could see a pinch of sincerity and love in his eyes.
Maybe he's not as bad as Alex is painting him, what if Alex is the bad guy man here?
"You have nothing with us, Marcus. You gave that up a long time ago."
"Gave that up? Why don't I remember it that way? Everything would have been perfect, Alex."
"You're right, everything would have been perfect if you didn't ruin it for us."
"It would be great for you if you don't step your feet in this pack again." Alex threatened and Marcus burst into a weird laugh.
"Really? An empty threat? I know you probably have her now, but I'll always be stronger. I'll always be your worse nemesis." His brows curved in rage as he stared deeply into Alex's eyes.
I know there's more to this, but Alex does not seem to want me to know about this, and Marcus wants in his pack before he reveals the truth. No! I can't trust someone this dangerous.
As Marcus made you leave, I made my decision.
"I'll go with Alex's pack."
Marcus turned to me with a grin that played carefully on his lips, "Very well then. You may. Alex, like every other round, you win this as well. But it won't be the same for the next one, I assure you that." He threatened and disappeared into the thin air.
We were about to take a step forward when we heard another loud howl, but this time, I could tell it was in group.
"What is that?"
"It's a signal that the full moon would be out soon. We need to hurry now."
We shifted into our wolves and sprinted through the cold, tall trees. And after some time, we got to an open place. It has only a house, but some wolves were gathered outside of it. They sat around the fire and seemed to know that I was coming.
A middle-aged woman hot up from their midst and approached me.
"You're welcome to the Pack, Alpha." She said in her old cranky voice.
I was surprised, why would anyone address me as an alpha? I thought it was only for the males.
It has ever occurred to me to fall under the influence of the full moon, and I really don't know why because I lost my parents at a tender age. But this night, I felt strange.
Like something was moving around my body and my bones would break anytime soon; it was as if I were shifting wolf for the first time.
"What's happening to me?" I grunted in between the pains.
"A symbol!" The woman said.
Sarah's POV.
"What symbol?" I grunted amidst the pain of my bones cracking up.
"The symbol we had been waiting for." She smiled satisfyingly.
I hate to say, but I must admit that I hate what this woman is doing to me, keeping in the suspense of something when I can't obviously do anything at the moment.
The pain continued for several minutes, and my last wish at that point was to make it stop, somehow. Just when I thought it was never going to end, the full moon took its rightful place up in the sky and the pain stopped immediately; it was as if I had never gone through that pain. Though it was surprising why all of this was happening to me, I was grateful that the pain had gone, and I had shifted into my wolf.
I had sometimes been taunted by other werewolves in the human world for not being able to shift. I wished that could see me right out and regret every word they had said to me. But that was far from coming true.
"You are really the chosen." The woman beamed with a smile.
I let out a loud roar and tried to shift back into my human form, but it wasn't working. It was as though Alex noticed what I was going through.
"You shouldn't break a sweat about shifting to your human form now, enjoy your wolf while it lasts. And you will have to be like that until the night is over, and the moon has rolled over."
I was shocked. How on earth are there so many rules about me that I don't know about? And the worst part of this all is that all these strangers seem to know me better than I know myself.
For me, the night was long and enduring. I sat by the first, watching the rest of the pack have fun while shifting their wolves to their human forms as they wished and I couldn't.
"I can't even shift to my human form, and they claim I'm their leader? The Alpha? What a big joke they are!"
"Why don't you hunt for us tonight, Sarah?" One of the members requested, and I shrugged in disapproval.
"We are your pack, and you shouldn't go against what we all conclude about. You should do as he had said." Another protested.
"Well, I'm not your leader, so I owe none of you any obligations." I roared through my wolf.
Alex got up from the crowd and walked in on me, he bent over and dipped his hands into my soft shiny fur; I could tell from the look on his face that he was enjoying.
"It would be fun, you know. More than you can ever imagine, I think you should try it."
I winced, got up and dashed into the woods. Unexpected, I picked a scent of another wolf and when I looked beside me, it was Alex. It was such a relief for me to know that I'm not in this alone.
"I got you on this." He whispered through his mind link and a smile played on my lips for some seconds.
I was about to lose focus on my mission when I picked an unfamiliar scent; it was a deer. Though I have not been opportune to taste a deer meat, people have commented that it is probably the best meat in the universe.
"It is time I have a taste of this meat." I said confidently to myself and lunged fasted toward its direction.
My paws hit the cold ground several times, the cold penetrating it and settled into my body, but that was the least of my worries at the moment. The deer is my focus and I must hit, tonight!
I sensed that I was much closer to it and in order not to give it a hint of what's to become of his fate, I slowly walked behind it. Just when it noticed my presence and tried to run away, I gripped it with my sharp it. The deer struggled had for freedom before it surrendered to the cold hands of death.
"You did an impressive job here." Alex, who had how shifted into his human form, said as he approached me.
I left the deer slipped from my mouth, looked at him and nodded.
"Let's head back now, the Pack would be expecting us already." He said, and quickly shifted into his wolf form.
The speed at which he shifts surprises me, it was like less than a blink of an eye; I never thought anyone could do that, but I have one right in front of me. I picked up the deer and went raced back to the Pack. The race was more competitive, but I could bet Alex let me win this time.
As I walked into the middle of the circle, sounds of cheers filled the air and I dropped the deer by the fire.
"You didn't help her, did you?" The woman from earlier asked Alex and I heard.
"Not at all, she caught it herself."
Our eyes met, and I threw her a glaring shot which she tried to conceal with a charming smile, but I wasn't buying into it.
While some of the pack members were busy trying to roast the deer, Alex approached me and sat beside me.
"You still have a lot to learn." He whispered.
I could tell he was talking about the race we hand earlier, and I nodded to his suggestion.
After we had finished devouring the deer, the moon began to lose its power and essence, this was the best feeling ever. I used to think humans are useless but now, I think their form has its own powers; I would give anything right now to have my human form back.
To keep the place lively, the Pack members resorted to singing and dancing around the fire, and the sight was great to behold. I felt like I had a real family, for once. It all felt so real and happy; this is the kind of life I wish for, and I'm glad I followed Alex.
But what if there's a lot of this in Marcus's pack? What if he's so powerful, and I don't have to take the overwhelming position of an Alpha here?
"Sarah! Sarah!!"
I heard my voice multiple times, but looking around, I couldn't seem to find the person calling me.
"Sarah!!!" It came louder and echoing this time.
