Amelia's pov
I stared at the screen of my computer in disbelief, unable to comprehend what I was seeing.
The words... You have been selected as the head of chefs...The annual conference... Slated for the coming week... New York City.
I ran my eyes over the email again and finally let out a small yelp of excitement. I swirled around happily on my chair in my office after reading the news on my computer.
I have always hoped to be the head chef for an event but I don't always get the recommendation from the judges. My senior colleagues were the ones who got the opportunities and whenever I went to them for help, all they did was to advise me to work harder.
I had worked hard for several years, hoping for what would constitute as my big break and it was finally here. I couldn't believe my eyes when I received the mail. The New York event was one of the most important events that my agency handled. It was the kind of event that could make or break a caterer's career and I could hardly believe that my agency was giving me the job.
Too excited to remain seated, I got up from my chair, walked around my desk and pumped my hands in the air silently. My excitement was short-lived when my desk phone rang. I picked it up and my boss told me to come to his office immediately.
What? Is there another surprise in store for me?
I dashed out to his office to meet him. Before entering, I knocked on the door. I smiled as I approached him, and he smiled back. His expression indicated that he was extremely proud of me. I noticed a man sitting across from him and, after bowing to greet my boss, I turned to greet the man as well, but the figure staring at me stunned me.
"Eddie?" I screamed out.
"Amelia Johnson," the man also called out my name calmly.
I remained rooted to the ground, lost in thought, staring at the man sitting in front of me. When I remembered how he had broken up with me six years before, I lost my balance.
Eddie had called me that night and asked me to meet him at our usual location, a restaurant near my school dormitory. I hurriedly dressed up, excited to meet him that evening. When I arrived, he was already seated at our usual spot, looking dashing as ever. I smiled as I approached him.
"Hey, babe," I greeted him, with a peck and then took my seat across from him. Instead of him replying to me, he took a sip of his drink, and that was when I noticed his expression. He was worried, looking as if he had something to tell me.
"What's wrong, Eddie?" I asked him.
He didn't hear me as he was lost in thought, staring at me.
"Eddie!" I yelled out his name which made him jolted back to the present.
"Do you have something to tell me? Are you okay?" I asked again, worriedly.
He sipped his drink again, still silent and that was when I knew something was definitely wrong with him.
We both stared at each other silently and after some minutes, he decided to say something. It was just four hurtful words.
"Let's break up, Amelia,"
To the present....
"Amelia! Amelia!" My boss called out my name.
I was jolted back to the present when I heard my name and then I saw my standing beside me, asking me what was wrong.
I regained my senses and then asked my boss what he was saying.
"Are you okay?" He asked me, looking worried.
"I'm... I'm fine," I said to him, stammering.
"Did you know Mr Eddie Thompson?" He asked again.
I looked at him and then my eyes wandered between him and Eddie, unable to reply to him as I was still in shock.
Just then, Eddie stood up from his seat, buttoning up his suit, he then replied to my boss that he and I knew each other.
"I will leave with Amelia to have a discussion about the necessary things needed for the event," Eddie added, walking towards me.
"Oh my gosh! Amelia, Why don't you tell me that you know Mr Thompson?" My boss asked me, looking utterly surprised when he heard that I know one of the richest men in the whole New York City.
I smiled at him awkwardly without saying anything.
"You can go with Amelia, Mr Thompson. Thanks so much for trusting our agency," my boss said, stretching out his hand to Eddie for a handshake.
Eddie accepted his handshake and I watched as he walked majestically out of my boss's office. I was still standing, unable to decide on whether to go with him or not.
"Are you now going with him?" My boss asked me.
"I will," I replied to him curtly and then reluctantly left his office. I met Eddie standing by the door, probably waiting for me.
"Can we go now?" He asked.
I stared at him for a while and then told him that I needed to grab my bag in my office.
"Okay, lead the way," he said.
"What?" I blurted out in surprise.
"I don't think we are close enough for you to follow me to my office. Let's be professional, please," I added.
He fell silent, and once I was certain he wasn't following me, I dashed to my office to get my bag. I was out after a few minutes, and he led me to his car, opening the backseat door for me, but I ignored him and used the other door. He chuckled at my expression before getting into the car. He directed his driver to take us to a nearby restaurant, and we arrived there after a few minutes.
We got out of the car, and his next words shocked me once more.
"Why are you hostile towards me?" He inquired.
"What?"
"Do you still love me?" He asked again.
Eddie's POV
I was also surprised when I saw Amelia's in her boss's office but I maintained a perfect face. I had to talk to her privately since it's been six years since I saw her. I knew she wouldn't want to talk to me if I asked her but with the job I was giving to her agency, I used the job as an excuse to meet her privately and fortunately for me, her boss consented to the meeting.
She kept her distance from me the entire way to the restaurant, and I knew I deserved such cold treatment from her. The romantic feelings I had for her overwhelmed me, but I wasn't sure if they were genuine or if I just felt that way because I hadn't seen her in a long time. When we arrived at the restaurant, we both got out of the car. As we walked, I tried to hold her hand, but she moved away from me.
I looked at her and noticed her angry expression, which made me laugh. When we were dating, she was always frowning or pouting whenever I did something wrong to her.
"I missed the old day," I muttered to myself.
"Did you say something?" She asked me.
"Did you still love me?" I asked her before I could even process what I had just said.
She froze for a while, almost losing her balance, of which I instantly went to her aid to support her. When she had regained her posture, she slapped away my hands.
"Keep on dreaming, Eddie. I have a man and I will never return to you," she said and walked off without waiting for my response.
I chuckled to myself and chased after her, asking who her boyfriend was but she ignored me and continued walking. We finally settled in the restaurant, waiting for our food.
"What do you need to discuss with me? Is it about the menu you want me to prepare for your event?" She inquired, sounding and looking serious.
I only stared at her which I guessed made her uncomfortable as she looked away from me.
"Let's talk about us, Amelia," I said.
"It's been six years and I knew that I wronged you. Can you at least give me a chance to apologize?" I asked.
"There is no us, Eddie and even if there was, that was six years ago. I have moved on and I know you have done the same. So let's talk about business," she said.
Just as I was about to apologize to her, the chef bought our food. Amelia was too focused on her food that she didn't even want to listen to me. I smiled and then started eating as well. When we were done, she asked if I had some questions for her as it was already past her working hour and she had a date with her man.
"Well, I will be traveling back to New York next week and we will be traveling together for the event," I said.
"I'm sure your agency sent you the menu list and the number of guests for you to prepare their meals," I added.
"I haven't gone through the menu list but I'm confident that it is something I can pull off. But why would I travel with you?" She asked.
"Fine, if you don't want to travel with me, you can just kiss this offer goodbye," I said, trying to scare her and just as I thought, she instantly agreed to do so.
Six years ago, she had always been dreaming of becoming one of the best chef in the whole world and I knew she wouldn't want to miss any opportunity that comes her way.
"Fine. Can I have your number in case I have other things to discuss with you?" I asked, stretching my phone to her.
She reluctantly took the phone from me, and a satisfied smile spread on my face as I watched her input her digits on my phone. She gave the phone back to me and teasingly I told her that I would save her number with "my love" with a love emoji.
"I don't care!" She yelled out and then scrambled out of the restaurant without waiting for me.
I stood up to leave the restaurant, relieved that I had obtained her contact information. As I walked to my car, I texted my assistant, James, to change my flight to the following week and to book Amelia's flight as well. When he started nagging me about the amount of work I have at the company, I hung up on him.
I was supposed to return to New York City the next day to begin planning for my event as my investment would be ten years old next week. After meeting Amelia and learning that she would be in charge of cooking that day, I changed my mind and planned to travel with her to spend more time with her because I knew she wouldn't accept if I called her and asked us to meet on a regular basis, and I also wanted to know if she meant what she said about having a man.
I smiled the entire way back to the hotel where I was staying. I entered my room and laid back on my bed, thinking about the first time I met Amelia.
I met her while we were both students at Florida University. I had just finished a test and was upset because I knew I had not written the test well. I sat on a bench under a tree, exhausted and troubled, when Amelia appeared in front of me, beautiful and yet clumsy. Her smile instantly made me forget how sad I was, and then she greeted me, asking for permission to sit beside me while she waited for a friend.
I also smiled at her and told her she could sit next to me. She thanked me and sat down quickly. She took a drink and a snack from her bag and began eating. Just as I was about to ask her name, her friend that she was waiting for approached us, shouting her name.
"Amelia!"
A message interrupted my thoughts. My phone beeped, and I looked to see who it was.
It was an email from the company I was attempting to do business with, informing me that they had agreed to collaborate with me. I tossed my phone beside me and went to sleep, turning off the light.
Amelia's POV
I was so angry as I dashed out of the restaurant, heading to my house. My head ached so badly as I thought about why I just had to meet Eddie at that moment and to think that she would be working for him made my anger more intensified.
I quickly hailed a taxi to get home to gather my thoughts.
"Golden apartment, please," I said to the driver. The old man drove slowly which pisses me off every second.
"Step on it, please," I said to him.
We finally arrived at my apartment. I paid him instantly and ran into my apartment, locked my door behind and quickly ran to my bed. I laid back and thought about how lovely Eddie was to me six years back and how hurt I was when he broke up with me.
Memories began to replay in my mind and my thoughts slowed down as I began to get lost in the past. I had seen him around at the university a few times but I never had the chance to talk to him.
Eddie stood out effortlessly in the sea of students at the university. His commanding presence, paired with his remarkable height, elevate him above the rest. Towering over most, he possessed an innate charisma that drew people, mostly girls, toward him like moths to a flame. His features, a blend of strength and gentleness, were accentuated by his deep, expressive eyes that held a glint of mystery.
His athletic build, chiseled jawline, and the confident way he carried himself made heads turn wherever he went. The term "demigod" was an understatement when describing Eddie. He wasn't just attractive; he exuded a magnetic charm that seemed to enchant everyone he encountered.
His auburn hair wasn't always perfectly styled; sometimes it would be a bit messy, and he'd jokingly run his hand through it, grinning sheepishly. He had this infectious laughter that could light up any room, coupled with a knack for making even the most mundane moments exciting.
He was always involved in various volunteer programs, dedicating his time to helping the community and supporting causes close to his heart. His genuine care for others was evident in the way he interacted with everyone, making each person feel seen and valued. Despite the fact that he came from a rich family, he was so humble and I was also attracted to him because of his personality.
I was finally able to talk to him for the first time when I saw him sitting on a bench under a tree, looking so down which was unlike him. However our conversation didn't last as my friend, Blair, that I was waiting for called out my name and I had to leave.
Our second encounter was at a local bookstore, where our fingers brushed while reaching for the same novel. Our eyes locked, and within moments, and to my surprise he struck up a conversation first and our conversation lasted for hours. His infectious laughter and genuine interest in my passions had instantly drawn me closer to him.
When it was getting late, I had to leave for my house and he offered to take me home. We also exchanged our contact information before he zoomed off. I was unable to sleep that day as I wasn't really sure about what I felt for him. I explained to Blair about whom I met and she was so jealous that I was so close to the hot and the most handsome man every lady in school would do anything to have. I told her about my feelings for him and then she advised me to ask him to take me on a date and if he agreed to do so, definitely he was also interested in me.
"Are you sure he would like to date someone like me?" I asked Blair.
"What did you mean by someone like you? You are also beautiful, intelligent but the only problem I have with you is your sharp mouth. Aside from that, you guys are a perfect match," she said.
I rolled my eyes at her and then went to my room. I stared at my phone, checking if he had sent me a message or called me. I waited so long for his call but he didn't call and without knowing it, I slept off.
I woke up the next day and the first thing I did was to check my phone. I was so happy when I saw that Eddie had sent me a message. I checked the content and he asked if I would be free that evening.
I quickly replied to him, telling him that I would be free after class. His message came immediately again, sending me the location and time to meet. I hurriedly stood up from my bed, dashed off to my bathroom to get ready for class. I carefully selected my clothes, putting on a short red gown, matched with a black purse and heels. I packed my hair in a messy hair bun and completed my outfit with a simple make up. I glanced at my reflection in the mirror and when I was satisfied with my look, I hurried out of my room, bidding Blair goodbye and explaining to her that I had got a date that evening.
"Go girl," she said.
I smiled at her and then exited our apartment. I attended my lectures and during the whole day, I was so happy and my mind was with Eddie.
It was finally time for us to meet, so I quickly hailed a taxi and went to the address he gave me. When I arrived, I was astounded by the massive restaurant in front of me. It was stunning, and then my gaze was drawn to Eddie, who was standing by the door. He approached me, spreading his arms for a hug.
I was shy as he wrapped his big arm around me. He let me go and then led me in. I was even more surprised to learn that he had rented out the entire place to me. His question caught me off guard as we sat waiting for our food.
"Will you be my girl, Amelia?"
