Chapter one
Ryder Kingston stares at the men longer than he should. The frown was suddenly appearing on his face.
The men all went down on one kneel in fear of what their prince would do to them.
"Your highness, it wasn't their fault," Lucas started but it was already late.
Ryder was already transforming, his head arch backward as the process begins slowly. His arms were the first to morph quickly, displaying sharp long claws. Within seconds, a brown coat covers his light-skinned hand.
Then, faster it went up to his legs. His legs came out big and he seems to have grown taller. The clothes ripped into halves now as he surrender to the rest of the transformation, not that he had a choice anyway.
Ryder's face switch slightly until tusks were coming out and hair was fast covering all his bare parts.
Lucas knew, he knew better than staying behind. Lucas took to his heel, out of the room. He picked the key before he could close the door. He locks the door, trapping the beasts inside.
It was the least he could do if he wanted to live. The moment the beast takes control over the prince, there wouldn't be many talk. It's either he kills or he gets killed.
Lucas waits for two hours in front of the door. He prevented anyone from moving closer whenever they heard the screams of the soldiers or the wailing of cries from inside.
Most soldiers already know what the kingdom is suffering from even though the king had warned Lucas to kill anyone that discover the truth about the prince's identity.
And he had killed so many all these years that he had gotten tired of killing more.
A soft sob started slowly. Lucas place his head against the door to hear clearly what was happening inside.
He glanced at his watch and discover it's approximately three hours.
He unturns the keys and open the door again.
There, laid in between lifeless bodies, ripped skins, broken arms laid the naked prince.
When Lucas walks nearer, he looks up and he could see the tears on his face.
He wasn't crying water, he was crying blood.
"Why!" He started, "Why is this happening to me!" He yells out and Lucas turns to run out again, "What are you doing?"
He made a silent turn and shrug, "You are about to get angry. I don't want to be on your death list," he says jokily and laughs.
Ryder watch him for a moment, fascinated by his choice of words and surprise he would be laughing with the situation at hand, "Are you trying to make me laugh?"
"I can't make you sad, your highness. If you get sad, you might get angry and more of this will happen," he takes a step towards him and picks his robe.
Ryder sigh, with much frustration, " So, I'm supposed to be happy about all this? I'm not supposed to even be said that I killed my men?" His voice has suddenly gotten louder and the fine lines on his face switch slightly.
Lucas went down on one knee, "Will you just kill me now then," he whispers, then look up at him, "I will rather die by your sword than be snap into halves by the beast," he tells him defiantly.
Ryder looks around him, at the bodies of his men. He swallow hard on the lump that had formed in his chest.
"Leave!" He says and turns away. He waited for Lucas to walk out before he walks to a room linking his meeting room to his chamber.
Clad in black trousers and a black t-shirt, Ryder took the space in the window and jump out. He took the secret door he created himself out of the place into the street.
It's very late in the night but to Medgerpines, the day has just begun.
This was what he needed, all that he could get after killing his men with his hands.
He doesn't want to think much about it because Lucas was right. The more he thinks about it, the more anger he would feel.
And it was very dangerous for him.
He took the busy road out, into the market. There seems to be a festival ongoing in the marketplace
Everyone gathers and lets out a lantern after wishing.
Ryder decides to join them. If there was a God that would grant his wish. Then, he would request for him to take away the curse on him.
He lights the lantern and lets it flow away, a wide smile on his face. For a reason, it felt like a God was hearing him and would definitely answer him.
"No! This is not a festival! This is mourning!" A woman screams behind him suddenly.
He turns back and sees that a group of people has suddenly gathered around.
The moon was high in the sky but the women of Medgerpines were not ready to call it a night. Each sat around an elderly woman.
Ryder walks closer.
"Why do you think so?" Another woman asked in return for what she had said earlier.
A woman wails softly, " The God is punishing us. He's punishing Medgerpines. Having a beast as a prince is a punishment."
" I heard he losses control whenever he's beast!" Another supported.
Ryder felt something rush through him. He felt awash with huge sadness. If there was something he didn't know, was that everyone knew what he was.
He thought it was a secret but now, the market women discuss it openly as if it didn't matter.
Why won't it? He was the prince and the only one.
"Is that true?" A soft voice was asking. Ryder stops moving and stares at the young girl.
"The land has been cursed! The only prince is a beast. A beast that can never be tampered with!"
"I heard the witches killed his mother so he wouldn't be able to be human again."
What? Ryder raises a brow. He had never heard it. No one has ever told him about the story behind his mother's death or the curse.
Even his father has refused to set eyes on him with fear that he might kill him.
Most times, he would think perhaps he was the one that killed his mother.
Can that really be true?
The young girl squeezes her face, "Why will they do that to the prince?"
Ryder felt the tears drop on his clothes. He had been battling with the curse since all his born days.
The feelings of anguish and grief that he had been passing through every time he killed people.
Every time he killed people and he couldn't stop himself.
Ryder felt another stab of something familiar.
His eyes shot out suddenly. His body shudders uncontrollably. Fuck! He's angry! He's already getting angry.
Ryder turn around to walk away, to do something so that the innocent wouldn't have to die at his hands. But he couldn't move.
Suddenly, he was switching between beast and his subconsciousness. He couldn't quite move his body as he wish.
It only seemed like he was watching a display.
No! Stop getting angry! Don't fucking get angry!
Ryder mentally screams back.
Chapter two
Elsie makes a double back and reaches up as if to snatch the moon out of the sky.
She smiles and walks back to the house. She stops suddenly and looks back at her stepbrothers.
"Wait!" She runs to them, "Where are you going?"
Liam studies her for a while, "To the market little sister. Have you forgotten today's festival?"
Leo giggles softly, " Yes, a huge celebration is ongoing at the market already. We will get to light the lanterns and make wishes."
Liam looks at his excited brother, " You must have lots of wishes you want to make."
" Yes! A lot! Like this!" He made a gesture with his hands.
They all burst out laughing real hard.
Elsie sighs, the frown has suddenly appeared on her face. Being twenty-three years old, you might think she has seen a lot in life especially with the expression that's always on her face.
"I know you want to go to the market. But can you not do so today?" She held a displeasing expression as she stares up at her big brother Liam.
Liam is the oldest and he's twenty-five while Leo is fifteen.
"Why?" Leo asks sadly. Apparently, he has listed to himself what he would do when he gets to the market.
"I just have a feeling something bad is going to happen. Will you stay at home with me?" She says emotionally and holds onto Liam's hand.
Leo hesitates before he moves beside Elsie, "Can we go tomorrow morning then?"
Elsie looks at Leo and nods slowly, " I will follow you tomorrow morning."
Liam smiles again and nods slowly, "I will do anything for you."
"I can get some lanterns," Elsie started but Liam cuts her off.
" No, let's sleep. We will have fun tomorrow morning," he finishes and started back to the house.
Elsie and Leo follow quietly.
Entering her room, Elsie climbs on the bed and stares out into the darkness through the window.
Elsie doesn't have any power, she was just used to calculating. She had a way to ask the day if things would run smoothly or not.
Once she tried it two years ago when she was going to another town with lots of girls of her mate.
She would take a step forward. Bend slowly and smile whirl she looks up. Then she would double back and reach up into the sky. Then the air would be cleared and she would be able to decide if disaster looms ahead or not.
She told the mothers of the girls back then but none listened to her. Elsie didn't follow them. Three days later, a report came that the girls were kidnapped. They never saw them again to date.
After that day, Elsie has learned to ask her creator before embarking on a journey or doing something.
Elsie's mother died when she was just six and her stepmother has been taking care of her.
Unlike other stepmothers, hers was the true definition of a virtuous woman. She was calm, caring and kind. She took care of Elsie alongside her children. This made the three children so close even after the woman had passed away three years ago.
Only her father lives, already heartbroken and not ready to take in another wife.
There were witches Elsie heard especially in Medgerpines town. She heard that Becky was one and that she still lives somewhere in the town with the mind to get the throne.
The Hudson owns the throne but he only bore two daughters. Becky and Mimi. Mimi was the eldest and the true heir to the throne.
Mimi was the mother of the prince.
Elsie knew all these stories because it was majorly the talk of the market people. She loves sitting down and listening to them as they narrate the story, even knowing that it's a non-fiction story.
Fortunately for her, she works in the market. She's a baker.
Elsie pulls the cover over her head and sleeps off.
Only waking up three hours later. Some people were crying outside. There were wails of tears and gnashing of teeth.
She heard her brother's voice and hurriedly got down from the bed.
She strides out of the room and out of the house. Truly, there were lots of people outside and her father was tending to them.
What happened?
She saw Liam at a corner and rushed to him. Leo was nowhere to be found but she guessed he was still asleep.
"Liam, what happened? Why are they crying?"
Liam sighs sadly and looks down at Elsie, " Thank you, Elsie, thank you so very much," he whispers and Elsie felt some drop of tears on her hand.
But she still quite didn't understand what has happened.
"Why does god have to curse us!" Someone yells and bursts into another round of tears.
" What happened?" Elsie's heartbeat increases as she anticipates what he was going to say.
Surely, it wasn't something good. Women were crying tears of sadness and anguish and regret. Something bad has happened.
But where? At the marketplace?
Realization dawns on Elsie as she stares back at the people still crying while her father is trying to console them.
But what kind of tragedy has befallen them on the night of their wishing festival?
"A beast," Liam started softly, "The beast came to the market. He killed every soul present in the market. He ripped them in two," Liam's voice fails and shakes.
Elsie was bringing out tears too, " Everyone?"
Liam nods slowly, "No one was spared. The beast killed them all."
Elsie's cries have to join others. She didn't even know why she was crying so hard. Was she happy her Brothers didn't go to the market or was she sad that everyone that did had died?
All! All were the reason!
Chapter three
The soft breeze on Ryder's body seems to ease the hurting he felt on his body, and the insatiable desire he felt deep in his soul.
He needed no one to tell him what must have transpired.
It was always like that. After he'd lost consciousness, there's only one thing that does happen.
Ryder opens his eyes and stares wide at the scene before him. The images were familiar, he'd seen them so many times for the past twenty-eight of his life.
Those gruesome images would make him want to end his life.
Ryder crawls forward, hot tears sting his eyes.
He was naked but that was not the bother at that moment. It was the dead bodies of a human beings like him that laid all around the place that used to be the marketplace just a few hours ago.
Now, ripped bodies, broken bones, and blood decorate the whole place.
Just to his left is the head of the girl that sat between the women last night, he remembers her. She was feeling pity that the god had to cause the prince.
He had killed her! He snapped her head off!
He couldn't stop the tears from fighting their way out and adding to his misery.
He held the head so close to his chest that he sobs more.
Why did he kill her? Why did he kill everyone?
Why was there a demon in him that he couldn't control?
He look around and realize none of the people had survived. He didn't let them.
Few feet away lay half bodies of people that were probably running away. The demon in him wouldn't let them off.
That was why Lucas always avoided himself before he turned into a beast fully. Because he was always unstoppable whenever he's a beast.
Ryder whimpers and cries harder, he couldn't hold it in. He couldn't handle the pains it was giving him.
Funnily enough, he wasn't feeling angry this time. He felt miserable and pitiful.
When will the god take pity on him and grant him the one wish he had always made?
Ryder drops the girl's head and struggles away, still crawling because he felt too weak to stand and walk.
He felt the taste of blood on his mouth and his head twists. The idea of drinking blood makes his stomach cringe loudly but he had always felt it, tasted it.
Now, he felt like a vampire, more than a beast. No, he was a monster in disguise.
A demon with anger feud, then blood feud.
He has crawled far, he noted when he looked back and realize he couldn't see the market.
The tears were still coming from his eyes and Ryder did not attempt to stop it.
He felt it was all he needed. Maybe.
He wraps himself and sobs even harder. Perhaps God will hear his pleas now. He felt so cold but he felt it might be his punishment every time he turned.
"He's there!" A strange, soft voice whispers into his ear, or maybe he thought. He desperately wants help that he had started to hear voices.
"Move back! He's naked! Do you want to see a naked man's body?" Another voice warned. This one is deep and loud.
Ryder shivers but didn't attempt to stand.
Just then, a duvet was thrown on him.
Ryder clutches at it with the instant need to quench the coldness that's deep in his body.
He felt himself being lifted off the ground.
"Father!" A tiny voice whines and Ryder realizes he was being moved.
Ryder felt like he was on the way to the judgment room. But he wasn't bothered. He has killed a lot with his bare hands. He was due for judgment.
The carriage stops and Ryder felt his heartbeat stop too.
The tears have ceased but the pains still reside. Ryder felt more miserable and every part of his body was screaming for help.
Ryder closes his eyes and felt his body being lifted again.
"Easy father," he heard that same voice again and he opens his eyes and stares into a pretty face, "Dad, he's awake," the voice rejoices.
Ryder adjust himself so he would be looking up at the old man beside the girl.
"I think he will be alright. I will give him some sleeping pill and pain killer," the man says and walk away.
For another reason unknown to him, Ryder discovers he felt emotionless. Nothing bothers him now than staring into the pretty face of the girl in front of him. She has an oval face shape, big round eyes, and a small mouth. She looks perfect.
The girl seems so happy as she watches him, "Are you ok, sir?" She smiles and places a hand on his head to check his temperature.
She withdraws and inclines her head to a side, "Can you talk?"
Ryder blink once then stares back before nodding slowly.
"Really! Dad, he can talk!" The girl jubilates before setting herself beside him, " Do you know sir, that I've found out something?" She giggles softly and stares back, " I love you sir, and I'm going to marry you."
Ryder felt something unfamiliar rise up in him. Anger? No! It wasn't.
Pure joy! Ryder burst out laughing, despite his current situation and the fact that his mouth has gone so straight for having frown all these years.
"See, see, you love me also," the girl chants joyously.
It felt strange, laughing, especially when there's a pretty girl in front of him.
For years, the only thing Ryder has learned to do was a frown, get angry, kill people and drink blood.
Ryder has never laughed so freely, has never thought of it. Because it never occurred to him. And he has never seen anything that would bring out happiness.
But he loved the way it made him feel now. If only he would never stop laughing.
The man walks back in with a bowl, "Here," he says and helps with placing it on his lips so that its content will enter his mouth.
"Drink, drink it all," the girls say unnecessarily.
Ryder smiles again and swallows the liquid hurriedly.
"Good, you will be able to rest very well," the man explains and walks out again.
Suddenly, he felt his eyes closing.
"Yeah, that's right. Sleep well," he heard the same voice before he fell off into the darkness that awaits him.
Perhaps God has finally decided to help him out.
Perhaps, it would be a new world to him whenever he wakes up.
He felt happiness in his heart, one he has never felt before.
