At the banquet hall on the top floor of the exhibition center in A City.
"Congratulations, Miss Joyce! You've just joined our company for a month, and now you've won the most prestigious prize. No wonder our company recommended you to come." Serena Li raised her glass up in the air.
Joyce Ruan's eyes glinted in joy as she twirled her wine glass gracefully around her hand. Without another word, she clinked glasses with Serena Li.
People who just met Joyce Ruan would've been fully convinced that she was an elegant lady who came from the highs of life. Serena Li, who was her best friend for ten years, saw through the "facade" right away.
As expected, Joyce Ruan dropped the mask almost immediately. She slumped back, sighing.
"Please. Weren't you the one who recommended me to this company? I should be the one thanking you."
Joyce Ruan lowered her hand, her eyes twinkling with playfulness. She had been exchanging formal pleasantries with so many people that her eyes started to twitch in exhaustion.
Serena Li snorted. "I knew you couldn't keep that up. Half an hour in, and you're already tired."
"I'm not. I'm just a bit tipsy."
Joyce Ruan motioned to the dozens of wine glasses on the table. Although she'd only been drinking for half an hour, several people went over to propose a toast to her. She might be a heavyweight in drinking, but even she couldn't help but waver at the amount of glasses she just drank.
"Please, you're just seeking an excuse to run away from here. Just go then," Serena Li teased.
Joyce Ruan waved her off, running to the bathroom. Nature was already calling her. After heading out of the party hall, she was so dizzy by the strong liquor in her system that she staggered across the corridor.
"Watch out!"
She stumbled forward. Fortunately, the man beside her quickly reached out and held her up.
"Thank –"
Joyce was about to say her thanks, but once she looked up, her body froze. It was as if the entire world had just stopped.
"What's wrong? Don't you remember me?"
The man was standing on top of the stairs, a kind smile threading across his lips.
"I–I..." she stuttered out, eyes wide in panic.
"The day my car hit you at the door of the cafe. I wanted to take you to the hospital, but you ran away before I could talk to you. Don't you remember?"
She stared at him, dumbfounded. Although she wanted to say something, anything, it seemed as if someone was holding her back. 'Did he only remember me from the car accident?' she thought.
"Don't you remember me?" Joyce said lowly. Although she tried to suppress her emotions, she couldn't stop her voice from trembling.
"You don't seem to remember me, do you?" The man chuckled. He waved at his assistant beside him, motioning him to give Joyce his business card.
His assistant shot Leo Xu a surprised look before handing a card to Joyce. It might look like a small thing, but it was incredibly rare for Leo Xu to hand these out.
"This is my business card. If you ever feel uncomfortable, call me. I'll cover the medical expenses." He nodded and returned to the banquet hall.
Joyce stared blankly at the card he had given her. Tears streamed down her face, dropping to the center of the card. The black words were all what took to push her over – Leo Xu, the President of the Star Group.
The elegant figure of Leo Xu faded into the crowd. As the cold wind blew, an idea came to her mind. Joyce straightened her back. She'd regret it if she let Leo Xu go tonight, especially when he just bumped into her! Alcohol ran through her system as she decided to do just that. She still had words to say to him!
Without another word, Joyce hiked up her dress and rushed into the banquet hall. She stopped in front of Leo Xu, who was chatting up with Cassie Jiang.
"I have something to tell you," Joyce murmured drunkenly, pointing at Leo Xu.
"Excuse me?"
Cassie Jiang scrunched up her nose, her uneasy eyes falling onto the wine glass that Leo Xu was holding. She was so close in making Leo drink the drug! 'Where is this woman from?' Cassie Jiang clenched her fists, hoping that her plan wouldn't be ruined.
"You look drunk," Leo said softly, fixated with her. Although Joyce was drunk, she still looked rather lovely.
"I'm not drunk! Come with me. I have something to tell you." Joyce suddenly hiccupped as she motioned him towards her. "Come here."
Joyce pulled Leo and ran towards the elevator, totally ignoring Cassie Jiang's glare.
"Hey!" Cassie Jiang yelled. "Give that wine back!" However, just as she was about to run after him, Leo's bodyguards blocked her from entering. With a frustrated sigh, she stomped back to the hall.
Leo waved the bodyguards away. He let Joyce hold his arm and drag him into the elevator. Ever since the car accident, Leo had felt very unfamiliar with the people around him, but there was just something about this woman that called out to him. He couldn't help but want to get close to her.
"Is that wine? Give me!" As the elevator closed, Joyce turned around and tried to take it from him.
Being incredibly agile, he dodged her grasp and bottomed up the glass, flipping it back. Leo raised his eyebrows.
"You're drunk. Stop drinking."
She pouted at the empty glass. Without another word, she pressed on the elevator button with a smile.
'The 21st floor?
Isn't that the floor where hotel rooms are?' From the look of her drunken face, he thought that she wanted him to take her back to her room.
"Here we are! Come out!"
With a 'Ding', the elevator door opened. Joyce staggered out holding Leo's hand. He frowned, staring up at the surveillance cameras. Before he could figure out what she wanted to do, he suddenly felt uneasy.
Staring at Joyce's staggering figure, Leo felt a surge of heat running through his system. It made his entire body hot and his heart started to beat erratically.
"What do you want to tell me? Why did you take me to the guest room?" Leo asked huskily.
"You'll know when you come in."
Joyce stood in front of a room, took out her card, and opened the door. She pulled Leo into the room and locked the door.
Before he could know what was happening, Joyce quickly pinned him down.
"There's drug in the wine. Let go of me first!"
he gasped out, lifting her up. She hung to him like a koala to a tree. 'Why did she bring me here?'
"I'm Joyce. Let's have a baby, shall we?" Her eyes were cloudy as she reached out and wrapped her arms around Leo's neck. Her hips were placed against his. Joyce grinned brightly.
Leo blinked, not knowing whether to laugh or cry at her outrageous request. Her slim figure could be seen as the dress was hiked up.
"Look, you're great and all, but we just met. Don't you think it's too soon?" Leo gazed at her.
"But it isn't! It isn't our second meeting! Did you remember me? Not even one bit?" Joyce demanded,
pulling him to the direction of the bed. With the drug in his system, Leo hung onto her helplessly.
She pinned him down, arms still tightly enclosed around his neck. She tilted her head and whispered, "Do you know how sad I was after we parted ways? I missed you, so fucking much! Why didn't you come back to me? Why don't you remember me?"
"What do you mean? Did we know each other before the car accident?" Leo struggled to sit up, eyes widening. Maybe Joyce was his missing puzzle piece. Maybe, just maybe, he could remember it all.
However, just as he was about to speak, she slammed her lips onto his.
The next morning, when Leo woke up, he found himself in an empty room. His clothes were neatly folded and placed on the sofa right beside the bed. He rubbed his temple, glancing at the red marks that stained the sheets. His lips twitched.
'The woman who promised me a baby runs away, huh?' he thought, snorting. Leo jumped out of the bed and gave someone a call.
"Henry, help me find someone."
Leo stared at himself in the bathroom mirror. There was a crazy smile plastered on his face when he saw the hickey resting on his collarbone. Last night was definitely a night to remember. Without another word, he went to the man who could help him, Henry Ji.
In a private box of the City Stella Club, Leo found himself staring at a laughing mess. He clenched his teeth in fury, staring at Henry Ji who just couldn't stop laughing.
"Sorry, but what? What did you just say? You slept with a woman, and then– and then she ran away?"
Henry Ji choked, trying to suppress another round of laughter.
"She works for your company."
Leo waved the files in his hand and threw them on the table. He narrowed his eyes, as if he was implicating that it was Henry Ji who was behind all of this.
"Okay, calm down. I didn't know she was working for my company till today. Besides, it's not my company but Uncle Li's. It's not like I'm interested in designing, let alone watch them do their work!"
he protested.
"Did I say anything?" Leo raised an eyebrow. "Aren't we working together now for a project? I want you to tell her to take over the design."
"What about the resort hotel? Why? Are you..." Henry stopped himself, staring at Leo in disgust. 'Did he just fall in love with a woman in one night?'
"I'm not that sick, Henry! It's just that... I think I know her from my past life, before the car accident."
Leo frowned, trying to recall what had happened last night, but he was returned with nothing. Henry Ji widened his eyes.
"You mean you think you'll remember it now? But what about you and Addison?"
"That's the point. I feel so distant with Addison, and there's just something about Joyce that makes me feel right with her, you know?" Leo stared at the window, deep in thought.
"Why don't you try sleeping with Addison tonight? Maybe... Okay! I was just kidding."
Henry Ji raised his arms up in the air as if in surrender.
Although Henry might look like a sloth, he was highly efficient. When Leo returned to his company, he was able to see Joyce in a meeting with someone in the operating department.
She had her head bowed as she was recording their conversation carefully. The way she looked sent a flutter to his chest. There were so many thoughts left unanswered in his mind.
Leo frowned, turning to his assistant. "Notify the colleagues of the operating department that we'll have a lunch meeting with the designer of the Li Group at noon."
'What was the meaning of the lunch meeting? When did he ever start setting up lunch meetings?' Although confused, the assistant nodded.
Joyce wished she could leave the Star Group as soon as the meeting was over, but she was told that they were having a lunch meeting later on.
She regretted what she had done to Leo last night. She lowered her head in shame as she continued to work, hoping that Leo wouldn't find her.
Leo didn't plan to make things difficult for her at the lunch table, but when he saw the way she averted her gaze, he couldn't help but laugh at the thought. 'Where was the bold Joyce who declared she wanted to have a baby with me?'
Everyone didn't seem as if they were up to the meeting like Leo was, so when he declared that it was over, all the staff immediately left the restaurant. When Joyce opened the door of their box after a bathroom break, her eyes widened in surprise when Leo was the only one there. She stilled.
"Surprised to see me?" Leo asked, raising his eyebrows.
"Uhm, where is everyone?" She stood by the door awkwardly, not knowing what to do.
"I sent them back to their work," he replied.
Joyce laughed awkwardly, moving towards him. "Just what I thought! Thank you for the lunch. I'll get going now!" She quickly grabbed her bag and was about to walk out when he called for her,
"Why are you in a such a hurry? Don't you think we should talk about the baby you've been planning?" Joyce erupted into a series of coughs, her face flushing in embarrassment.
"I–I was drunk last night, so..."
Without having much of a choice, she returned to her seat. It was as if the earth below her was hell-bent on swallowing her up. Not only did she just sleep with her ex-boyfriend, but also he was the boss of the company she cooperated with!
"Don't worry. I won't call to account or anything. Given that I've taken your first time from you, I think I may have wronged you one way or the other." His generous behavior didn't sit well for her. In fact, it made her even more uncomfortable as to what she should do.
"It's also my fault. I guess we're even now. Good bye." She forced a smile and stood up to leave.
"But I remembered you accusing me of not looking for you. Do you mind explaining that to me?" Hearing his words, Joyce's eyes became sharp. Leo caught the panic rising in her face in an instant. She was hiding something, and from what he understood, it might have something to do with his memory loss.
'What the hell did I say last night?' Joyce straightened her back and turned around. "It's probably the Cognac speaking. Don't take it to heart, Mr. Leo."
Just as she was opening the door, her eyes widened at the two people standing outside. Her arm trembled, as she took a step back unconsciously.
"Mom? Addison? Why are you here?"
Leo narrowed his eyes at the way Joyce reacted. 'Why would she react that way with my Mom? Have they met before?'
Tracy Feng, Leo's mother, was the first one to recover. She stepped into the private room.
"I came here with Addison for lunch. The manager told me that you were having lunch with your colleagues, so we came here to have a look," she replied.
Tracy Feng wore a loving smile. Of course, she knew her son best. Throughout his entire leadership, she never heard of him calling for a lunch meeting, so she couldn't help but curious.
"I'm full. I was just about to leave." Leo stood up, walking towards her.
"Who's your colleague?" Addison Jiang narrowed her eyes at Joyce.
"She's the designer from the Li Group. We're here to discuss the design of the resort hotel." As if nothing had happened, Leo introduced Joyce to the pair. Although he might not look like he was paying attention, he was actually observing their every action.
"Nice to meet you two. We've done. I'll be taking my leave now."
Joyce already fled the scene in such a hurry. 'Why the hell am I so unlucky?' She groaned at the thought.
Seeing Joyce's retreating figure, Tracy Feng stared at the clouds uneasily.
Ever since their lunch meeting that day, Joyce and Leo didn't see each other again. The project of the resort hotel was going smoothly. However, just when the design was going to be finalized, the Star Group called off the plan and asked the Li Group to hold an emergency meeting.
The meeting room was deadly quiet. The two executives scanned the documents quietly, looking incredibly serious. When Joyce raised her head, she found that Leo was staring at her. She looked away, startled.
"Can anyone give me a reasonable explanation?" Luke Li, the director of the management department from the Star Group, closed the document in his hand.
"We're also shocked and furious by the news of the accident. We will cooperate with your investigation." The director of the design department from the Li Group bowed his head apologetically.
Joyce finally understood what had happened. 'My design draft got leaked! I was the chief designer. There was no way in hell that the design could be leaked!'
"How will we investigate then? Are you planning to cover up for your employees?" Luke Li snapped sarcastically, glancing at Joyce from time to time.
"It's impossible for our employees to have something to do with this! A leak design won't be good for our company as well," the design director snapped back.
"Well, your company was the one who kept the design, so who else but you? Besides, I've heard how another company tried to poach your designer. Is that true?" Luke Li folded his hands.
Joyce's eyes widened at his words. Her head snapped up to see that everyone was staring at her.
"Yes, someone tried asking me if I was interested in leaving, but I rejected them," she protested.
"Why wasn't that reported to me?" The design director narrowed his eyes. 'The new employee is so young and naive, but she already won such a prestigious award. She really is something else,' he thought.
