In the middle of the night, the silence was pierced by a woman's pleasured moans. As she smelled the scent of the man on top of her, Cassidy Wright fell into a trance.
"What's on your mind?"
Franklyn Pierce seemed to notice Cassidy's absentmindedness. He stopped kissing her neck for a second and raised his head to look at her. His eyes were so gentle, as though he wasn't the same powerful person who ran the Apex Group.
Franklyn was undeniably good-looking. Not only did he have the perfect face, but he also had the perfect body. Cassidy felt bad for being distracted at a time like this, so she reached for his face and stroked his sexy lips gently.
"Oh, nothing. I was just thinking about how to get the order from Vanguard Enterprises."
Franklyn knew she was lying, and his expression darkened.
The next moment, his fingers wandered to a forbidden place, and Cassidy couldn't help but groan. Franklyn's thin lips finally curved up happily. "That's the punishment for your being distracted."
Franklyn knew exactly what Cassidy wanted in bed.
After a passionate round of mind-blowing sex, Cassidy only rested for a few minutes before she got up to run a bath for him.
But before she could leave the bed, Franklyn held her hand and suddenly asked, "Are you worried about money or something? Why were you thinking about work while we were having sex just now?"
As he spoke, Franklyn's eyes were fixed on Cassidy's beautiful body. Even though they had just gone at each other like rabbits, Cassidy could still feel that the fiery lust in his eyes hadn't been completely extinguished yet.
She shook her head in response to his question. Since Franklyn was always so generous, she wasn't worried about money.
On the surface, Cassidy and Franklyn each took what they needed from each other. He was greedy for her body while she loved his money.
But only Cassidy knew that deep down, it wasn't just about the money anymore. She had fallen head over heels in love with him over the years.
However, she couldn't let Franklyn know about this, lest she be kicked out.
"No." Cassidy shook her head and changed the subject. Her eyes were clear and sincere. "Are you leaving soon? If not, I'll make you a night snack."
As soon as she said this, Franklyn's phone on the bedside table started to ring. Seeing this, Cassidy immediately shut her mouth and proceeded to put on her silk pajamas.
Then she overheard Franklyn saying into the phone in a doting voice, "Okay, I'll be right there."
After putting the phone down, Franklyn turned over and got up. He was completely naked, but it was nothing to be ashamed of. He was perfectly chiseled, like a classical Greek sculpture.
"Something came up. I have to go."
Hearing this, Cassidy nodded obediently, even though she had clearly overheard the flirty feminine voice on the other end of the line just now.
She went to the cloakroom, pulled out his clothes, and helped Franklyn get dressed. When she was fixing his tie, she couldn't help but look up at his handsome face and ask, "It's really late. Where are you going, Mr. Pierce?"
Franklyn didn't answer her and simply pursed his lips. Cassidy knew that she had said something wrong. So she shut her mouth and fastened his cufflinks quietly.
Franklyn was born with the face of a nobleman. In addition, because of his work, his wardrobe consisted solely of high-end suits. As a result, he looked cold, aloof, and unapproachable.
Cassidy reached for the suit jacket and slipped it on Franklyn. In doing so, she inadvertently touched a square-shaped box in the pocket of the suit jacket.
She didn't have to look inside the gift box to know what was in it. It was obviously an engagement ring.
But it wasn't for her.
She had a hunch that her shady relationship with Franklyn would end after tonight.
Sure enough, the following day, she was awakened by the vibrations of her phone. When she checked her notifications, she saw that her chat group with her colleagues was buzzing with exciting news.
The gist of the news was this: Franklyn was going to be engaged.
Cassidy had always kept a low profile. Very few people in the company knew about her relationship with the boss, namely Franklyn's secretary and his assistant.
The discussion in the chat group was particularly lively.
Some girls talked about how they regretted not making a move on Franklyn sooner, but they were obviously just kidding.
Cassidy stared at her phone screen blankly. She had made a move on Franklyn, but where did that get her? She was still going to end up with nothing.
When she finally came to her senses, she tapped on the link in the group chat, which led her to a news website. As expected, she saw Franklyn's handsome face on the front page.
The beginning of the news article was very attention-grabbing.
"The CEO of the Apex Group is getting engaged to the only daughter of the chairman of the Ascendant Group on the 15th of this month!"
The bold text made Cassidy's eyes sting.
Beneath the bold text was a photo of Franklyn and Maggie Valdez, the daughter of the Ascendant Group's chairman. The two were hugging each other in the middle of the night by the sea, looking like a picture-perfect, loving couple.
The clothes he was wearing in the photo, however, were the same ones she helped him wear when he left her place last night. For a moment, Cassidy didn't know whether she was the pitiful one or Maggie.
Cassidy closed the browser and tapped on her chat with Franklyn on WhatsApp. The last message he sent was from yesterday afternoon, when he said that he would be visiting her that night.
Franklyn hadn't given her the ultimatum yet, so perhaps he was still in Maggie's bed.
Taking a deep breath, Cassidy dragged herself out of bed. She had made up her mind to break up with Franklyn, even if he never brought it up with her.
It wasn't her style to beg Franklyn to stay, even though her love for him had only grown deeper over the past few years.
After washing up, she got dressed and rushed to the company. As soon as she arrived, she submitted her application for a transfer.
She had applied to be transferred to their office in Canada to fill in the vacant managerial role. No one wanted that position, but now she felt that it was tailor-made for her.
Cassidy had thought that her transfer would certainly be approved. But unexpectedly, when she came back from a meeting, she received an email that rejected her transfer application.
She frowned and immediately called the human resources department. Their explanation left her very confused.
On the other end of the line, the director of the human resources department, Raya Todd, shrugged and said, "Miss Wright, there's nothing I can do. Your transfer application was rejected by the big boss himself."
Cassidy frowned when she heard this. Big boss? Franklyn was the one behind this? What did he mean by doing that?
She was the one who took the initiative to leave the country. Wasn't that what was best for them?
Confused as she was, there was nothing she could say in protest. "I see. Thanks, Raya."
After hanging up, she fell into deep thought. Finally, she made up her mind and started walking toward Franklyn's office. She seldom came to see him in his office, so it was a little nerve-wracking.
Tami Sugden, the CEO's secretary, was shocked when Cassidy showed up. Thinking of today's trending news, Tami thought that Cassidy was here to make trouble, so the smile on her face suddenly became a little strained.
"Miss Wright, what can I do for you?" she asked stiffly.
"I'm here to see the CEO. Please inform him," Cassidy said, smiling politely.
Tami knew about the shady relationship between Franklyn and Cassidy, so she was a little unnerved to see Cassidy so calm.
She called Franklyn through the intercom. Cassidy overheard his deep voice saying, "Let her in."
When Cassidy entered the office, she found Franklyn busy reading a report on his desk. The sleeves of his shirt were rolled up, revealing his strong arms.
"Mr. Pierce." Cassidy stopped a few feet away from Franklyn's desk, keeping a professional distance from him. "May I ask why you rejected my transfer application?"
Franklyn didn't even look up from the report. Cassidy was not convinced and continued, "I'm the youngest sales director of the company. My performance is top-notch, surpassing the rest of the business department. I think I'm qualified for the post in Canada."
Franklyn was a person with a strong sense of control. Over the years, Cassidy had always been obedient to him like a kitten. That was how she was able to stay by his side all these years.
This was the first time that Cassidy ever questioned him.
He pursed his lips, plucked a cigar from the box at the corner of his desk, lit it unhurriedly, and then exhaled a thick puff of smoke.
"Do you really want to leave?" he finally asked.
Cassidy nodded.
"Why?"
"I believe I've proven myself to be the best candidate for the position."
Squinting at her, Franklyn chuckled. "You're a smart girl. You know that's not what I'm asking."
Cassidy paused and then raised her head to meet his sharp gaze. "Mr. Pierce, you're going to be engaged. It'll be best for you, Miss Valdez, and me if I leave now."
Look how considerate and understanding she was! As soon as she found out that Franklyn was about to abandon her, not only did she not make a scene, but she also took the initiative to leave. Any normal man would be grateful to her for being so understanding.
But Franklyn was obviously not a normal man. After he heard out Cassidy's explanation, his expression darkened.
He snubbed out the cigar in his hand, stood up, and walked over to Cassidy. His tall shadow immediately enveloped her, making her shiver slightly.
"Are you saying you're dumping me?"
Damn it! He was getting engaged to another woman. Why did he make it sound like he was the one who was dumped?
Cassidy was about to complain when Franklyn suddenly wrapped his arms around her waist, forcing her to look into his eyes.
Cassidy saw a light flash through Franklyn's cold eyes. His Adam's apple bobbed slightly in his throat, which made her subconsciously step back.
Having been with Franklyn for so long, she knew very well what he looked like when he wanted sex-and that was what he looked like now.
But they were at work...
Franklyn didn't give her time to think. The next second, he pressed his lips against hers. His kiss was fierce and passionate. Cassidy had never been able to keep up with his fierce kisses.
By the time he scooped her up and carried her to the sofa, her sanity was on the verge of collapse.
But somehow, she managed to grasp onto the last vestiges of her sanity before it completely crumbled. "Mr. Pierce," she whispered in a trembling voice, "we're at the office..."
Despite Cassidy's small protest, Franklyn's lustful eyes wandered to her lips for a moment. Then he snorted and decisively started unbuttoning her shirt.
When most of Cassidy's soft breasts were exposed, Franklyn's eyes burned brighter with lust.
Just then, there was a sudden knock on the door.
Franklyn sighed exasperatedly and shouted at the door, "Go away!"
"Mr. Pierce, Miss Valdez is here to see you."
It was the voice of Brayan Powell, Franklyn's assistant. Upon hearing what he said, Franklyn paused for a split second and then withdrew from Cassidy without hesitation.
He straightened his tie and walked back to his desk. In a matter of mere seconds, he returned to his usual cold and aloof look, leaving Cassidy alone on the sofa like a used toy.
For some reason, Cassidy felt a dull ache in her heart.
But she didn't have the time to dwell on it. She briskly buttoned up her shirt and smoothed her messy skirt. Just as she stood up, Maggie pushed the door open and came in with a bright smile.
"Franklyn, I brought you-"
She paused when she saw Cassidy standing in front of the sofa.
"I'm sorry, Franklyn. Did I interrupt your work?"
Franklyn looked up at her with a doting expression that Cassidy had never seen before. "No, of course not."
Then he turned to look at Cassidy and said coldly, "You can go back to work now."
His tone was as cold as ice, as though he wasn't the same man who had kissed her so passionately just now. Cassidy felt a bitter taste in her mouth, but she managed to force a smile. "Yes, Mr. Pierce."
Cassidy left the office obediently. When she turned around to close the door, she caught a glimpse of Maggie trotting over toward Franklyn and wrapping her arms around his neck, kissing him on the cheek. "You must be tired from last night. I brought you some chicken soup-I cooked it myself! It was my first time to cook, so I hope you like it."
Maggie looked at him with gleaming, doe-like eyes. Getting the implied message in Maggie's words, Cassidy quickly shut the door and then walked toward the elevator expressionlessly.
When she made it back to her office, she buried her face in her hands and sighed heavily, thinking about how intimate Maggie and Franklyn had been just now. She couldn't shake off her annoyance and restlessness.
Although she thought she was mentally prepared for this reality, she still felt so upset.
She sat slumped over her desk and thought for a while. If Franklyn refused to let her transfer, then she had no choice but to resign.
She had been working for the Apex Group for many years. It didn't matter that she had to leave the man she loved, but she felt a bit sad to give up the position she had worked so hard for.
Cassidy was lost in thought when her assistant, Emely Singh, suddenly barged into her office and looked at her with a strange look.
Cassidy finally came to her senses and looked up at Emely. "What's up?"
"Miss Wright, the representative of Vanguard Enterprises has agreed to see us."
Cassidy was responsible for the sales of large mechanical production lines in the Apex Group, and Vanguard Enterprises had great purchasing power. She had been working on getting this order for more than half a year, but she still hadn't gotten a chance to see the purchasing representative of Vanguard Enterprises.
So when Emely told her that they finally got a meeting with them, her dull eyes lit up. Finally, there was some good news! "When's the appointment?"
"I checked your schedule and found that you're available tonight, so I made an appointment for dinner." Emely was a young girl who had just graduated a year ago. With her high ponytail and unmatchable energy, she looked so youthful.
"I see." Cassidy nodded. "Please book us a high-end Mexican restaurant."
She remembered that the purchasing representative of Vanguard Enterprises liked spicy food, so Mexican food sounded like a good choice.
Emely nodded, but she didn't leave immediately. Instead, she kept looking at Cassidy with a hesitant expression. It seemed that she wanted to say something but stopped on second thought.
"Was there anything else?" Cassidy finally asked.
Taking a deep breath, Emely plucked up the courage and bit the bullet. "Miss Wright, have you seen the gossip news today? There's a piece about you..."
Then without waiting for a response, Emely bolted as though she was fleeing from a ticking time bomb.
Frowning, Cassidy took out her phone and browsed the news. A few seconds later, all the color drained from her face.
Some paparazzi had taken photos and videos of her and Franklyn. It was very easy to recognize Franklyn, but her face, on the other hand, was a bit obscured.
However, anyone who knew her would definitely know that it was her in those photos. No wonder Emely looked so anxious just now.
The impending engagement between Franklyn and Maggie had just become a trending subject this morning. Now that such controversial news had come out, it naturally gained a lot of attention on the Internet. Some busybodies even began to dig up information on the mysterious lady.
When their relationship first started, both Cassidy and Franklyn were single. There was nothing to be afraid of if their relationship was exposed.
But now that the news was exposed at this critical point in time, any normal person would think that she was trying to sabotage Franklyn's engagement so that she could become Mrs. Pierce!
Cassidy knew that Franklyn hated people who played tricks on him the most. Over the past few years, she had seen many women try to trick him, and they all ended up suffering miserably.
Three years ago, a good-looking starlet used this very same trick, trying to gain fame by rubbing shoulders with a powerful man like Franklyn.
But the next time Cassidy saw that starlet, the latter was standing at the door of a mid-level hotel as a greeter.
Agitated, Cassidy sent a message to Brayan.
Upstairs, Franklyn had just seen Maggie off. When he turned around, he noticed the hesitant look in Brayan's eyes. He frowned and said, "If you have anything to say, just spit it out."
Brayan opened his mouth, but no words came out. Finally, he just handed the phone to Franklyn and whispered, "You'd better see it for yourself. Someone has exposed you and Miss Wright."
Then he added, "Miss Wright just texted me to say that she wasn't the one who leaked the news. She also wanted me to inform you that she sent her letter of resignation via e-mail, saying that she hoped you could let her resign as soon as possible lest she cause you more trouble."
