Chapter 1 Betrayal Always Hurt

~Eve pov~

I walked stealthily into the doctor's office, it's been almost an hour since my blood was taken to be tested. I sat across from Dr Felix, her fixes were fixed on her computer, but I could tell she briefly acknowledged my presence with a little nod.

"Here," she handed over a letter to me, "you are perfectly fine, Eve." She finished with a smile.

"So I don't have a problem." I stated, staring at the letter in my hands.

"I'm still figuring out how we can help your husband, if there are no way, then you should consider surrogacy or implantation." She said, but the fact that she mentioned my husband was quite surprising.

"You mean my husband has been here? And he has a problem?" I asked, shifting in my seat.

"You were not aware?" She asked, looking surprised. "I'm sorry, but that means I just divulged a patient's personal information. So, you can't tell him you heard it from me." She said, and I could see her eyes begging me.

I didn't say anything before I left the doctor's office. My mother in-law has been calling me all sorts of names for the past three years, but suddenly she started calling me a sterile woman because I was yet to give her a child. I asked my husband to come with me to the hospital so we can be tested and see what the problem was, but he flatly refused. He said he was the one who told his mother about my infertility because he knows he had no problem. But it turned out, he was the problem, not only was he infertile, but he had to make me take the blame to cover up for himself before his mother.

The plan was to go back home and shove my test result in their faces, but nothing prepared me for the sigh before me when I got home.

I saw a woman, sitting across Brian with my mother in-law.

"Eve, meet Morgan, the girl Biran was supposed to get married to before he ended up with you." Tracy, my mother in-law said, words rolling off her tongue like what she had just said wasn't a big deal.

"And what is she doing here?" I asked in annoyance.

"What do you think? She's probably here to see how Brian is doing." Tesie, my sister in-law, replied from where she was sitting, scrolling through her phone.

I turned to Brian, "Brian?" I questioned him with my eyes.

"Don't worry Eve, Morgan is just a friend. She's been out of town for years, she must have missed me...I mean us," he spread out his arms so I'll know the 'us' he was referring to, "so she's here to say hi." He concluded.

I didn't reply to him, I walked into our room instead. I had no idea he had another woman in his life before we started dating. He was a hotshot back then in school, so it's no doubt girls were after him. But he told me I was the first girl he'd brought home to his parents. I wondered why his parents were not pleased with me at first, particularly his mom and sister, but now I know why.

They had seen him with a girl who was better and classier than me, I bet she's from a good background too compared to me.

Brian walked into the room fifteen minutes later, I was lying on the bed, not wanting to acknowledge him. It's not like he'd listen if I complain to him, he'll tell me I'm overreacting again, just like what he said when his mother first raised her on me, when his sister took my things and claimed they belonged to her. Whatever happened in the house was me overreacting according to Brian. He had almost brainwashed me into thinking I was being delusional about what was being done to me in that house.

"You are not sulking because of Morgan, are you?" He said, sitting close to my legs.

"Why did you lie?" I asked, my back still facing him.

"About what?" He asked, probably feigning ignorance.

"You said I was the first woman you had taken seriously, the first to know your mother. But what about her?" I tried to keep my tears in.

"Morgan?" Was he being serious, who else would I be referring to? "About her ... .It was just a few things. Yeah, I wanted to take things to the next level with her, but her education was more important to her. She wanted to further her education, I wanted to settle down." He explained, shrugging his shoulders after speaking.

"How do you feel seeing her again?" I didn't know if I was asking the right question.

"I feel nothing. My feelings for her died long ago." I was backing him, so I couldn't tell if he was lying or not. But I hope he was telling the truth.

"Okay."

"It's almost lunch time, you should head to the kitchen to prepare lunch." He stood up and walked away.

I almost forgot I was the housemaid.

Morgan had left before I finished cooking, which I'm glad she did. I set the table, and everyone gathered to eat-a ritual I hate being a part of. Just as I expected, a few minutes after we started eating, Tracy started talking about how excellent Morgan was.

"Morgan was a first class student back in school right?" She turned to Brian. I was also a first class student, but I didn't attend a reputable school, so it didn't matter.

"Yes." Brian briefly said, not taking his eyes away from his food.

I didn't know if he answered that way because the food was too sweet or because he didn't care about it again for real, but I hoped it was the latter.

It's been almost two weeks since Morgan came for the first time, but she literally turned our house to her second home after then-she never failed to show up six times a week. I kept complaining to Brian, but he kept saying I was overreacting. And the fact that his mother treated her like a wife whenever she was around was more unnerving.

I decided to try my luck today again and go for an interview I sent my applications for. The interview was brief-as always, the moment I mentioned the school I graduated from, everything else I said no matter how intelligent they sounded was trash.

I got back home to see my mother in-law and Tesie were not around. But there was a red heel by the door. I hoped it wasn't what popped up in my mind, so I walked stealthily into the bedroom, ignoring the sounds coming from there.

"Oh my god, Eve! You are not supposed to be back this soon." Brian said, bringing the duvet up to his chest level.

I leaned towards my right side to get a clear view of the woman in bed with him, and it's just who I expected it to be.

Morgan.

Chapter 2 Close To Death

~Eve pov~

I sat on the couch in the living room, trying to process what I saw, while Brian took his time to get dressed before coming out of the room.

"You said you had no feelings left. So what was that? Lust?" I asked him, holding my hands akimbo.

"It was hard to resist, she seduced me and you know she's beautiful and...."

"Shut up Brian!" I stood up, pacing back and forth.

"I am beautiful too! Look at me..." I walked over to me, staring directly into his eyes. "Your wife is beautiful too, so save that lame excuse for yourself."

"You have to understand that it was a mistake." He said, trying to take my hands and in his. I refused.

"Brian, you made fake promises and assurances, which made me trust and married you, I lived with that. You made us live with your mom and sister after your father's death against my wish, I lived with it, now you're cheating on me with a woman you said never existed in the first place, I am not going to live with it." I deadpanned, eyeing him from head to toe.

"So what are you trying to say, you want to divorce me now?" He asked, holding his hands akimbo like what he did doesn't warrant it.

"Bingo!" I said, clicking my finger in response.

He scoffed, "I'm the only one you have Eve, you don't even have a job. How will you survive out there?" He asked, mocking me with his face.

"We'll see about that Brian." I hit him by the shoulder as I walked past him. I picked my phone to dial a friend's number.

"Hello Stacy." I said, trying to hide the hurt in my voice.

"Who would have thought that you'd be the first to reach out after our fight." Stacy said, and I could sense her grinning from ear to ear.

"Can you get me a lawyer?" I asked her straight up, not ready to patronize her talk on who reached out first.

"Why?" She asked, her excitement came to halt.

"I'm getting a divorce." I said, as I dropped my bag on the bed.

"Finally!" She exclaimed loudly, making me push my phone away from my ear.

"I'm going to demand everything I can possibly demand from him. I'm not scared of losing the case, I have a lot of evidence against him that will make him hand over whatever I want." I explained to her, hoping she'd get the cue that I want an expert divorce lawyer.

"Sure! I'll speak to my uncle, I'm sure one of his friends will be available." She promised.

"Are you fine though?"

I raised my head up to stop the tears from falling. Stacy told me not to marry Brian, said he was a big red flag, but I didn't listen to her. She asked me to leave him when his mother and sister started misbehaving, but I was so much in love with that I didn't mind their attitude towards me. So, I understand why she'd help regardless of my reasons. I'm glad she didn't take it to heart that we stopped talking mainly because of Brian.

"Stacy, I'm fine. I just need to get away from here." I said, lying down on the bed.

"You should stay away from home tonight. I'll send you a voucher now. I got it from a hotel I frequent, you can use it. Don't say 'no'. It will expire soon and you know I'm no longer in the country." She finished off.

"Thank you, I'll use it."

Immediately the call ended, I went for my bag, packed a few things, and left the house.

I headed for the hotel written on the voucher Stacy sent to me to spend the night. I wonder what Brian's mother and sister would say when they found out what happened.

I guessed I overrated my importance in their life, because none of them called while I was at the hotel, not even Brian.

I got a message from Stacy the next morning, it contained the details of the lawyer she got for me.

I decided to give him a call, and he set up a place for us to meet by noon.

I met with the lawyer, he handed over a document to me, and said I should give it to Brian. If he signed it and agreed with the terms then I wouldn't have to drag him to court.

"Here," I handed over the brown envelope to Brian, "sign it and we won't have to take yourself to court." I watched a she read the words carefully.

"Emotional damage fee, 10k dollars!" His eyes widened in shock, "Are you planning to use me to get rich?"

"That's rich coming from you. Do you know how many opportunities and money I had lost because of you and this useless marriage?" I shouted at him.

"Regardless..." He waved the document in his hand, "You are literally asking me for half of my savings." He barked, making me jump.

"We can go to court if you are not pleased with my terms." I said to him, tapping my foot on the ground impatiently.

"Why don't we sit and talk over it amicably?" He asked, his eyes begging me to do what he wants.

I sat across from him, and he passed me a drink.

"You need to calm down first." He nudged me to take a drink before he continued.

"I will sign it. I'm not really concerned about the money, but the fact that you want to leave based on a mistake I made once doesn't feel right." He reasoned, hoping I'd understand him.

"Do you think I'm leaving only because you cheated?"

He raised his eyebrows, "Then what else? My mom? You know..."

"What... are... you saying?" I couldn't hear him clearly, and I could feel my words being slurred.

"You should go to sleep first." My vision had started getting blurred but I saw the smirk on his lips.

I felt him moving my body, "Where are you taking me?" I managed to ask.

"To death."

Chapter 3 A New Life

~Eve pov~

I opened my slowly to take in my surroundings, I noticed I was in an uncompleted building, and across me were Brian and Morgan, smoking into each other's mouth-Brian smokes!?

"What do you guys think you are doing?" I asked shifting on the ground, because my hands and legs were tied.

"You are awake? I guess the dose was too heavy, seeing how it knocked you out for 7 hours." Morgan said with her birdy voice.

"Morgan, let's not drag this for long, mom would start getting worried soon." Brian said, and I could tell it was Morgan who put him up to it.

He placed the envelope in his hand on the floor, then proceeded to untie my hand. "Sign this and you'll be free." He handed over the document. It was a divorce paper, stating we'll both go our separate ways without demanding anything in return.

"What if I refuse to sign it?" I asked, glaring at him.

My head collided with the ground the moment a hand slapped me across the face.

"Don't be bitch and sign the fucking paper!" Morgan screamed, rubbing the hand she used to slap me.

I sat upright slowly and repeated, "What if I refuse to sign?" I used my hand to wipe my nose, and it turned out I was bleeding already.

This time it was a plank that collided with my head.

"Morgan! You are going to get her killed." Brian tried to stop her.

"Tell her to sign the fucking papers then." She deadpanned, pacing back and forth.

"Eve please, just let it go." He took my hand, and placed a pen in my palm. I looked at the paper again, and took another glance at Morgan, I could tell she was ready to kill me. So, I signed the paper.

"Let's go." Morgan said, holding Brian's hand.

"And leave her here?" He asked, showing concern for me.

"What else?" Morgan left his hand and walked towards me. "Shouldn't we finish her off before we go?" I shook my head frantically at her suggestion.

"Please don't." I begged, tears streaming down my face.

"What are you planning to do?" Brian walked over to us, and held Morgan by the arm.

"What do you think will happen once she get out of here? She'll fucking report us." She pointed out.

Yes, I would report them, but that didn't mean I had to die for it.

"Do it." Morgan handed Brian the plank she was holding.

"What!?" Brian asked in shock.

"I'm just a woman, you don't expect me to kill someone for you, do you?" Morgan leaned towards Brian as she gaslighted him.

"Brian....le...let's talk about this. Remember...ermm..the love...the love between us." I tried to stop him when he took the plank from Morgan and took a step towards me.

"I'm sorry." The last thing I heard before I blacked out.

*****

I woke to the sound of machine beeping, I looked around to see the machines I was connected to, which includes a heart monitor. But I could tell I wasn't in a hospital.

"You are awake." I turned to my right hand and saw a man standing close to the window.

"Who are you and where am I?" I asked, feeling nervous that it might be a scheme made by Morgan and Brian.

"I'm Nathan, I found you in one of our buildings lying unconscious. I didn't know what happened but taking you to the hospital will cause bad rumors to spread concerning our company, that's why I brought you here." He said, using his hands to demonstrate as he speaks.

The moment he finished speaking, a man in his early fifty entered the room. He looked at me and smiled before turning to Nathan.

"She's awake." he said, his eyes beaming with joy.

He introduced himself as Arthur Craig and that he meant no harm. Days went by and I eventually relaxed around him. He kept talking about how I reminded him of his daughter, who died while giving birth. I felt sorry for him, so I was always entertaining his talks whenever he came to check on me.

He asked if I had a family but I said no, I only have my father, and he's as good as dead to me. He proposed that I become his adopted daughter, which I declined at first. He told me he had helped me a lot already by saving my life.

He told me I owe Mr Nathan my life, not him, that he seriously wanted to be his daughter. After much persuasion from him, I agreed. Told him I read Business administration in school so he took me to his company, introduced me as his daughter and gave me a position to work in.

It was like after facing death, I got a new life. I had luxuries at my beck and call, I couldn't even think about how bad my past life was. I was overwhelmed by the world of rich people. I attended ball parties, award parties, and elite parties, I started making connections and lines were falling in place for me. I couldn't ask for more. For two years, I lived like Arthur's daughter, and I got promoted at work.

"Eve Craig, you'd be attending a family dinner with me tonight ." Arthur said, taking a sip from the drink in his hands. He liked to add Craig to my name, he said he loved how his name went so well with my name.

"Alright Dad, I'll go with you." I smiled at him.

We got to a five star restaurant, the family we were going to have dinner with were seated already. Arthur apologized for our lateness, even though we were not late. Few minutes after we took our seats and the introduction was made, a man that seemed to be older than Arthur, whose name is Gabriel, started speaking.

"Arthur, have you considered my marriage proposal?" He asked Arthur, dropping the cutlery in his hand.

"You are getting married?" I asked Arthur, smiling at him to tease him.

"No, you are getting married." Gabriel replied, making me choke on my drink.

"To who?" I asked, trying to play along with his joke.

As if on cue, he entered-the man I often see on billboards for topping the list of young billionaires in a year-Logan Maxwell.

"To Him."
