The night was dark, and outside, thunder clapped and lightning flashed. It had been raining all day.
Adeline Dawson was curled up in bed. She'd wrapped herself in a quilt, but despite that, she still couldn't help trembling.
She had been afraid of dark, stormy nights since she was a child. She felt as if countless invisible hands were going to grab her and drag her into the abyss.
Adeline bit her lip. Even though her whole body was covered in sweat now, she still didn't dare to move a muscle or make a sound.
Creak.
The door of the bedroom slowly swung open. Then, Adeline heard the sound of leather shoes against the wooden floor.
Adeline's heart started beating fast, and she held her breath for so long that she began getting chest pains. Her mind started filling with horrible scenes that made her shiver.
She was alone in this big villa. In order to guarantee the privacy of the masters, the servants all stayed in another house behind the main residence.
Next thing Adeline knew, someone was pulling the quilt off her, which made her tremble even more.
"Don't..."
She screamed in panic, but that didn't stop the intruder from ripping away the quilt ruthlessly. Through her tears, Adeline saw a handsome man in a white shirt in front of her. It was Brendan Clemons, her husband.
"What are you doing here?" Looking at Brendan in front of her, Adeline felt her fears gradually subside. Her heart, which had jumped to her throat, slowly returned to its rightful place.
"Why? Were you expecting somebody else?" Letting go of the quilt, Brendan snorted and then began unbuttoning his shirt. With his slender fingers, he undid his buttons one by one, revealing his toned, honey-colored chest.
Adeline immediately blushed and turned away.
"Are you shy?" Brendan stared at his wife who was sitting up in a fetal position in bed. She had on a silk slip nightdress. She looked very nervous, and she wouldn't meet his gaze. One of the straps of her nightdress had fallen down from her shoulder, and the way she was curled up raised the hem of her nightdress to her thigh. Under the dim lights, her flawless skin looked even more seductive.
Brendan swallowed as he felt a little bit turned on.
Adeline and Brendan had been married for three years, and they had sex frequently. Seeing the expression on Brendan's face, Adeline immediately knew what he was thinking.
"Go take a shower." Adeline jumped out of bed. She took out Brendan's pajamas from the wardrobe, handed them to him, and shoved him into the bathroom.
A few moments later, she heard the sound of running water from the bathroom. Thinking of what would happen after Brendan was done taking a shower, Adeline felt her eyes sting.
During the past three years, she had been dutifully playing the role of Mrs. Clemons. But when night fell and she and Brendan were alone in the room, he tortured her in bed.
He was like a crazy, insatiable beast that didn't stop until she was completely exhausted.
While Adeline was in a daze, the door of the bathroom swung open, and Brendan stepped out. He didn't wear the pajamas that she prepared for him. Instead, he only wrapped a bath towel around his waist. Water was dripping from his hair all the way down to his abdomen until it was absorbed by the towel.
Before Adeline could get prepared, Brendan yanked off the towel and threw it on the floor. He grabbed her and put her on her back on the mattress. Next thing Adeline knew, Brendan was sliding her panties aside and entering her, and she was letting out a cry of pain.
Brendan went on top of her and started pumping. The hot air that he breathed out made her earlobes and her neck itch. Then, he moved to kiss and suckle on her plump breasts. She couldn't help moaning and trembling from the excitement.
Brendan was so hot and hard inside of her, and his thrusts were short and swift. Adeline had to admit that her husband was indeed skilled in bed. After only three years, he had already memorized where her most sensitive spots were. At the moment, he found one of those spots and ground against it, driving her insane with pleasure.
The ecstatic feeling made Adeline's head spin, and she could feel every jolt of it shooting up her spine. She was addicted to that feeling. As Brendan pushed in and dragged out, she arched her back and then raised her hips. She was desperate to meet his every thrust. She needed to be filled.
Wet, slapping sounds filled the room together with Brendan's sexy grunts.
"I want to hear you moan, honey. Come on. Let those sounds out." Brendan's deep, alluring voice bewitched Adeline to the point of complete abandon.
She finally opened her tightly sealed lips and let her satisfaction transform into soft yet unrestrained groans of pleasure. Finally hearing his wife moan, Brendan was even more aroused. He almost couldn't stop himself.
After taking her thoroughly on the bed, he picked her up, set her on the floor, and took her there. He also took her in the bathroom and on the balcony. He made her come again and again as if he never got tired. Finally, she was exhausted, and she fell asleep in his arms.
After a long time, Adeline opened her eyes. Hearing Brendan breathing steadily, she knew that he was sleeping soundly. She removed his hand from her waist, slipped out of bed, and tiptoed to the window. She sat down and stared blankly at the night sky.
Three years had passed. In all that time, Brendan had never called her "honey" unless they were having sex.
Adeline turned around and gazed at the handsome sleeping face of Brendan. Except when they were in bed, his eyes were always cold and emotionless when he looked at her.
Three years ago, Adeline's father failed in business and ended up buried under a mountain of debt. Many creditors came to demand the money. In order to pay off their debts as soon as possible, the Dawson family had no choice but to turn to the Clemons family for help, because the two families had made a deal years back to marry their kids. They hoped Adeline would marry Brendan, and the Clemons family would give them a huge amount of money to help them get through the crisis.
The Clemons family was rich and powerful, but Brendan Clemons was a notorious playboy.
Adeline had never met Brendan before, and there was another guy that she liked. At first, when her father asked her to marry Brendan, she refused. But then, her father had threatened her with her mentally ill mother. In the end, Adeline had no choice but to agree.
Before the wedding, the Clemons family and the Dawson family had arranged for Adeline and Brendan to meet.
Adeline was very reluctant to come to the home of the Clemons family.
That day, the sun was shining brightly. When Adeline saw Brendan for the first time, his eyes were filled with impatience. But he still looked so attractive. He reminded her of Romeo from that classic love story.
As Brendan walked closer to her, Adeline felt her heart race and her palms turn wet. She didn't expect that her future husband was the same guy she'd had a crush on for many years.
She could still remember their first conversation during that quiet afternoon. Overjoyed, she said to him, "Hello. I'm Adeline Dawson, your future wife."
In response to her, Brendan scoffed. Sitting on the sofa with his long legs crossed, he said coldly, "Adeline Dawson? Whatever. To tell you the truth, my grandpa is seriously ill and bedridden. He wants to have a great-grandchild before he passes on. If he were in excellent health, I wouldn't have married you. My family will give your family a sum of money to solve your problems. But after we get married, we are only to be husband and wife in name. Don't expect me to love you and care for you. Your task is just to produce an heir for the Clemons family. Is that clear?"
Looking into his cold, emotionless eyes, Adeline knew that he didn't like her.
But he was still Brendan Clemons, the man she loved.
This was the only way to get close to him.
She married him with hope.
She would try her best. She would be nice to him and love him. Maybe someday he would develop some feelings for her.
However, it turned out that she had been incredibly wrong.
In the past three years, she had devoted all her heart to him. She got up early every morning to prepare breakfast for him. She did everything for him, but in return, he treated her like a speck of dust.
He didn't remember her birthday or their wedding anniversary. When the elders celebrated their birthdays and they were supposed to show up at the parties together, he never came. There was a time when she had a stomachache so bad that she could only shiver and wince. When she called him, he only told her over the phone, "I'm very busy right now. Don't call me if there's nothing urgent."
Then, he hung up.
At that time, she struggled to get to the hospital by herself. She signed her own hospital papers and hired a nurse to look after her. After she was discharged from the hospital, she returned home alone. Brendan never bothered to ask where she had been. She wasn't even sure he noticed that she hadn't been home for days.
However, he cared for Tiffany Clemons a lot.
He arranged every trivial matter for her.
When Adeline got married to Brendan, she met Tiffany, Brendan's sister-in-law. Brendan, his elder brother Lance, and Tiffany were childhood friends and they grew up together.
Both Brendan and his brother fell in love with Tiffany, but Tiffany chose Lance in the end. Later, they got married and moved abroad. But unfortunately, Lance met an accident not too long after and was seriously injured. Since then, he had been in poor health.
Sadly, Lance passed away weeks ago. Brendan went abroad to bring home his brother's ashes. He also took Tiffany back with him and gave her one of his apartments for her to live in.
Every time anything at all happened to Tiffany, Brendan went to see her right away.
They were always together as if they were a real couple while Adeline, Brendan's legal wife, was like a stranger to him.
Adeline had been comforting herself that Tiffany was just Brendan's sister-in-law. Brendan would never have an affair with her.
However, one day, she received a photo from Tiffany. In it, Brendan had an apron on and was cooking in the kitchen. Adeline had been married to Brendan for three years, and not once did he prepare a meal for her.
Adeline didn't want to believe it, so she decided to pay Tiffany a visit.
It was Brendan who opened the door for her. Wearing a simple white shirt, he stood at the door. He looked at her and asked coldly, "What are you doing here?"
His tone was full of disgust. He spoke to her as if her mere presence had already ruined his entire day.
Tiffany was standing behind him, and she only had a bath towel wrapped around her body. Tiffany winked at Adeline with a mischievous smirk.
Adeline stared at the scene in front of her. She couldn't believe it.
Tiffany was Brendan's sister-in-law. How could she be in the same room as him dressed like that?
Adeline waited for her enraged tears to come, but she felt absolutely nothing. She thought she'd be angry seeing Brendan and Tiffany in such a situation, but she was calm.
Perhaps it was because Brendan had disappointed her so many times that she'd just lost all hope. It was over. She turned around and went home.
As the first ray of morning sunshine shone in through the gauze curtain, Adeline opened her eyes. It was dawn. It was time to start a new day, but for her, it was a new life.
Like what she had been doing every morning since becoming Brendan's wife, she took the clothes that Brendan was going to wear for the day, ironed them, and laid them on the sofa. Then, she went downstairs to prepare breakfast.
A cup of hot coffee, one sunny-side-up fried egg, and a piece of toast with butter. All of these were Brendan's favorites.
After that, she went upstairs. Brendan had already gotten up. He was putting on his trousers. His belt hadn't been fastened, and it was hanging around his waist. Thinking of what happened last night, Adeline blushed.
"You were exhausted last night, and you got up so early. You should go back to bed after I leave." With his back to her, Brendan spoke in a soft but distant voice as usual.
Adeline lowered her head and grabbed the lace hem of her apron. She rubbed her fingers against it over and over. Her palms started to sweat as she grew more and more nervous.
Taking a deep breath, she finally decided to blurt out what she wanted to say.
"Let's get divorced," she muttered. Letting out those three words seemed to have used up all her strength.
After a short pause, Brendan continued to fasten every button of his shirt. Then, he put on his cuff links and then his watch.
"Brendan, you sleep with me so that I will be able to produce an heir for the Clemons family, which is your grandfather's wish, right?"
Even at this moment, Adeline still didn't want to give up. The sex last night was true and so was the pleasure. Maybe the only thing wrong was her feelings for Brendan.
She started to imagine that even just for a short moment, maybe Brendan truly loved her.
Brendan stood rigidly for a moment, and then he frowned.
"Don't you know everything clearly?"
The next second, he saw that Adeline nodded and smiled bitterly.
In his memory, Adeline had always been obedient and suave. But today, she seemed to have changed into another person.
Lowering her eyes, Adeline replied, "Yes, I know everything very well. I know that you've never liked me. You hate me. Every second with me is torture for you."
The sun shone on her pale face.
Brendan saw the coldness and firmness on her features.
"So from now on, you don't have to tolerate me any longer. Let's end this marriage. I'll leave you, as you wish."
She chose to leave, so Brendan and Tiffany could finally be together.
Adeline no longer wanted to be the third wheel. She was tired of feeling like an unappreciated jester in her own husband's court. She was done begging for the love she deserved.
She would let Brendan go. He no longer needed to sleep with her while thinking of another woman at the same time.
Sometimes, when he was wasted, he would even call her by another woman's name.
The past three years was like a dream. But now it was time for Adeline to wake up. She didn't want to deceive herself anymore.
Brendan was surprised at first, and then, he looked at Adeline with disdain.
Ever since they got married, she had been trying to please him and hoping that he would fall in love with her. But he had also made things crystal clear to her from day one.
"Don't dream about things that don't belong to you." That was what he had been telling her from the very beginning.
He squinted at her, feeling that she was getting more and more unreasonable.
He sneered, "Let's get divorced? Have you really made up your mind?"
"Yes."
Adeline nodded, took out the divorce settlement with her signature on it, and handed it to him. "I've already signed it. Please sign it as well and inform me when we need to go to the court."
Then, she grabbed her packed suitcases and made her way downstairs.
Brendan didn't expect that Adeline was being serious.
He stared after her thin figure and then spoke in an emotionless tone.
"Once you walk through that door, there's no coming back."
Coming back?
Adeline had been trying her best to show Brendan her real and sincere love for him, only to be hurt and taken for granted. She'd had enough.
