The city lights of Seattle glittered against the inky sky, but Jason barely noticed them. He moved like a shadow through the bustling streets, his senses on high alert. The smells of gasoline, food trucks, and damp concrete mixed with the faint metallic tang of his own guilt. He shouldn't have been here, living this life, but he couldn't go back. Not after her.
Jason paused outside Emma's apartment, his sharp hearing catching the sound of her soft laughter from inside. That sound was his anchor. The reason he'd walked away from the life he was born into.
He leaned against the brick wall, his mind flashing back to the night he made his choice.
It had been during a tense meeting in the Moonshadow Pack's den, deep in the forest where moonlight barely reached. Jason stood before his beta, Vincent, and his closest friend, Jon. The room was silent, the air thick with disbelief.
"You're leaving? For a human?" Vincent's voice was sharp, disbelief etched into every word.
Jason met his gaze without flinching. "I love her. I won't stay where she's seen as prey or collateral."
Jon, always the voice of reason, tried to intervene. "Jason, you're our alpha. If you go, you're leaving us vulnerable. Do you think Magnus or any other rival will hesitate to attack?"
Jason's fists clenched. "I've made my decision. You'll manage without me."
The betrayal in their eyes haunted him as he walked away that night, and it still lingered now, months later. But Emma was worth it. She made him feel human, not just a beast destined for violence.
The sound of footsteps pulled him back to the present. Emma's door opened, and there she was-her auburn hair catching the golden glow of her hallway light, her smile soft and inviting.
"You're early," she teased, stepping onto the small stoop to greet him.
"I couldn't stay away," Jason replied, his voice low but warm.
She reached up to touch his face, and for a moment, the city noise faded, leaving just the two of them. But even as her touch calmed him, Jason couldn't shake the nagging sensation that someone was watching.
Somewhere in the shadows, Orion's green eyes gleamed with malice. Hidden among the rooftops, the rival beta watched the couple with a cold, burning desire. Emma's smile belonged to Jason, but Orion vowed it wouldn't stay that way for long.
As Emma led Jason inside, Orion slipped back into the darkness, already plotting the first move in a deadly game.
Jason stood at the edge of the rooftop of Emma's apartment building, the city sprawling below him in a chaotic symphony of lights and noise. The cool night breeze ruffled his dark hair as he stared into the distance, every muscle in his body coiled tight.
Emma sat cross-legged on a blanket behind him, holding two mugs of coffee. "You can sit, you know. The city isn't going anywhere," she teased.
He turned, his intense blue eyes softening at the sight of her. She looked so at ease, her auburn hair catching the moonlight, her laughter light enough to dissolve his worries-if only for a moment. Jason joined her, taking the mug she offered.
Emma studied him for a moment. "You've been restless all week. Is this about those wolves you fought last week?"
Jason hesitated. Emma had seen him shift during the ambush days ago, his secret torn open in the most violent way possible. She hadn't run. She hadn't screamed. But she also didn't understand the storm that followed him.
"They weren't just random wolves," Jason said finally, his voice low. "They were part of a rival pack. Bloodfang."
Emma's expression faltered. "So they're hunting you?"
"No." Jason's gaze darkened. "They're hunting us."
The weight of his words hung between them. He reached for her hand, his calloused fingers brushing against hers. "I won't let them hurt you, Emma. I'll die before I let that happen."
She squeezed his hand. "I trust you, Jason. But if you're in danger because of me-"
"Don't," he interrupted sharply. "Don't even think that. You're the reason I left the pack. The reason I have something worth fighting for."
Emma nodded, though her unease lingered. "Then we fight together."
Jason couldn't help but smile, admiring her fierce determination. But his smile faded as the scent hit him-something sharp, earthy, and laced with malice. His eyes snapped to the edge of the rooftop, his body already shifting into a defensive stance.
"What is it?" Emma whispered, clutching his arm.
"Someone's here," Jason growled.
---
Across the street, hidden among the shadows of a crumbling office building, Orion crouched on a ledge, his piercing green eyes locked on Jason and Emma. His blood simmered with jealousy as he watched Jason protect her, touch her, claim her.
"She doesn't belong to you," Orion muttered under his breath.
He tightened his grip on the blade strapped to his thigh-not silver, but sharp enough to wound even an alpha. Magnus's orders had been clear: observe and wait for the right moment. But patience wasn't Orion's strong suit. His obsession with Emma burned hotter with every passing second.
He adjusted his position, ensuring he stayed downwind of Jason's heightened senses. But it wasn't enough.
Jason turned sharply, his eyes glowing gold in the dark. He sniffed the air, his jaw tightening. "Bloodfang," he growled.
Before Emma could react, Jason pulled her to her feet. "Inside. Now."
"What about you?" she asked, her voice trembling.
"I'll handle this," Jason said firmly, already moving toward the rooftop's edge.
"Be careful," Emma called after him, retreating to the safety of the apartment.
Jason leapt effortlessly across the gap between rooftops, landing in a crouch on the building where Orion hid. "Come out, Orion," he snarled. "I can smell your stench from a mile away."
Orion stepped into the moonlight, a smug grin on his face. "Hello, Jason. Still playing the hero, I see."
Jason bared his teeth. "What do you want?"
"What do you think?" Orion replied, circling him like a predator. "You walked away from the pack, from your power, for her. And now, I'm here to take what you don't deserve."
Jason's fists clenched. "You think you can come into my territory, threaten my mate, and walk away alive?"
Orion laughed, a cold, mocking sound. "Oh, Jason. This isn't your territory anymore. You're a lone wolf. Vulnerable. Weak."
Jason didn't respond. He lunged.
The two wolves clashed, their bodies colliding with a force that rattled the rooftop. Jason's punches landed hard and fast, but Orion was quick, dodging and countering with precision. The fight was brutal, a savage display of claws, fists, and raw strength.
Orion landed a sharp kick to Jason's ribs, sending him skidding across the gravel. "You're slipping, Alpha," he sneered.
Jason wiped the blood from his mouth and rose, his golden eyes blazing. "You think I need a pack to deal with you?"
He charged again, this time with relentless fury. Orion barely managed to block the onslaught, his smug confidence replaced by desperation.
But Orion wasn't alone.
From the shadows, two more Bloodfang wolves emerged, their forms already shifting into hulking beasts. Jason snarled as they lunged at him, forcing him to split his focus.
The rooftop became a chaotic battlefield, Jason holding his own against the trio, but the odds were stacked against him. Orion took advantage of the distraction, landing a vicious blow to Jason's back.
Jason fell to one knee, his breathing ragged.
"See?" Orion taunted, stepping closer. "You're alone, Jason. Weak. And now, she'll see that, too."
"Don't count me out yet," Jason growled, his voice deep and guttural.
With a surge of adrenaline, Jason roared and slammed his fists into the ground, sending a shockwave that knocked the Bloodfang wolves off balance. He used the moment to tackle Orion, pinning him to the ground.
"Tell Magnus this ends here," Jason growled, his claws inches from Orion's throat. "If he comes for me or Emma again, I'll tear him apart."
Orion smirked, even as blood dripped from his mouth. "You're already dead, Jason. You just don't know it yet."
Jason hesitated for a split second-long enough for one of the other wolves to slam into him, breaking his hold on Orion.
The Bloodfang wolves retreated, dragging Orion with them. As they disappeared into the night, Orion's voice echoed back, "Enjoy your time with her while you can. It won't last."
Jason staggered to his feet, his body aching but his resolve unbroken. He returned to Emma's apartment, his shirt torn and his face bruised.
Emma ran to him, her eyes wide with concern. "Jason! What happened?"
"They're not stopping," he said, collapsing onto the couch. "Orion won't stop until he has you."
Emma knelt beside him, her hands on his shoulders. "Then we fight. Together."
Jason looked into her determined eyes and felt a glimmer of hope. But deep down, he knew the only way to truly protect her was to confront his past.
And that meant going back to the pack he had abandoned.
The alleyways of the city were dark and quiet, lit only by flickering streetlights. Jason moved cautiously, every sense on high alert, his hand gripping Emma's as they walked. Though the world around them seemed peaceful, Jason knew better. The peace was deceptive, hiding the storm that loomed just out of sight.
"Why are we out here again?" Emma asked, her voice low but steady.
Jason's golden eyes scanned the shadows. "Because Orion won't stop. He's watching us, waiting for the right moment. If he's nearby, I need to know."
Emma frowned but didn't argue. She trusted Jason, even though she felt far out of her depth. Her world had shifted the moment she learned the truth about him, about the existence of packs and rivalries that extended beyond what she could have imagined.
But she refused to run. Not from Jason and not from the danger that came with loving him.
The faint sound of footsteps echoed behind them, so quiet that Emma wouldn't have noticed if Jason hadn't tensed beside her. He stopped abruptly, his body a wall between her and whatever was approaching.
"Stay behind me," he ordered, his voice calm but firm.
"Jason-"
"Trust me," he interrupted.
She nodded reluctantly, gripping his arm as the shadows ahead shifted. From the darkness emerged two figures, their eyes gleaming with a feral intensity. They were wolves, though still in their human forms, their postures radiating menace.
And then Orion stepped into view.
"Well, look who decided to take a midnight stroll," he said, his voice dripping with mockery.
Jason's jaw tightened, his shoulders squaring as he placed himself fully in front of Emma. "What do you want, Orion?"
Orion smirked, his green eyes cold and calculating. "You know what I want. You gave up everything-your pack, your title, your power-for her." He nodded toward Emma, his tone turning derisive. "And now, I'm here to collect."
Jason growled low in his throat, his muscles taut with restrained fury. "You're not taking anything. Not tonight, not ever."
Orion chuckled, motioning to the wolves beside him. "You're outnumbered, Jason. You can't protect her alone. Just walk away, and maybe I'll let you live."
Jason didn't reply. Instead, he stepped forward, his eyes glowing gold.
The tension snapped like a rubber band as one of Orion's wolves charged, its human form blurring as it began to shift mid-stride. Jason met the attack head-on, dodging the claws that slashed at his chest and countering with a punch that sent the wolf stumbling back.
The second wolf attacked from the side, but Jason was ready, ducking under its swing and delivering a kick that sent it sprawling.
"Jason!" Emma cried, her hands clutching a nearby piece of broken wood she'd picked up instinctively.
Jason turned to face Orion, who hadn't moved from his spot. His smirk was gone, replaced with an icy glare. "Is this all you've got?" Jason taunted, his voice low and dangerous.
Orion's lips twisted into a snarl as he shifted into his wolf form, his body growing larger and more powerful. Without hesitation, he lunged at Jason, claws flashing in the dim light.
The two clashed, their movements a blur of fury and precision. Jason fought with everything he had, but the fight was brutal, and the odds were stacked against him.
"Emma, run!" he shouted, his voice ragged as he blocked another of Orion's strikes.
But Emma didn't run. Instead, she stepped closer, her heart pounding as she watched the fight unfold. She couldn't abandon him, even if it meant putting herself in danger.
She gripped the makeshift weapon tightly, waiting for the right moment. When one of the wolves lunged at Jason's back, she acted, swinging the piece of wood with all her strength. The wolf yelped in surprise, stumbling away from Jason.
"Emma, no!" Jason yelled, panic flashing across his face.
But Emma didn't stop. She stood her ground, her eyes fierce despite the fear she felt. "I'm not leaving you," she said firmly.
Jason's gaze softened for a split second before he turned his attention back to Orion. With renewed determination, he charged at the rival wolf, tackling him to the ground.
The fight was savage, every blow and claw strike fueled by raw emotion. Jason pinned Orion, his teeth bared. "This ends here," he growled. "Stay away from her."
Orion sneered, even as Jason's strength kept him pinned. "You think this is over? Magnus won't stop until you're dead. And she-"
Jason's fist connected with Orion's jaw, cutting off his words. He released him, stepping back as the other wolves scrambled to their feet, retreating into the shadows.
Orion glared at Jason one last time, his voice echoing as he disappeared. "You can't protect her forever."
The silence that followed was deafening.
Jason turned to Emma, his chest heaving as he struggled to catch his breath. "Are you hurt?"
She shook her head, her eyes wide. "I'm fine. But you're not."
Jason staggered slightly, his injuries catching up to him. Emma rushed to his side, helping him stay upright. "We need to get you out of here."
Jason nodded weakly. "We can't stay here. They'll come back."
Emma's jaw tightened. "Then where do we go?"
Jason hesitated, the weight of his next words heavy in the air. "Home, To my old pack. They're the only ones who can help us now."
Emma froze. "Jason, you left them. Will they even listen to you?"
"They have to," Jason replied, his voice filled with both determination and dread. "Because if they don't, we're as good as dead."
Emma didn't argue. She slipped an arm around his waist, supporting him as they began their journey into the unknown. The city lights faded behind them, replaced by the dark silhouette of the forest ahead.
For Jason, returning to his pack wasn't just about survival-it was about facing the past he thought he could leave behind. And for Emma, it was about proving that their love was worth any sacrifice, even if it meant walking into a world she didn't fully understand.
The road ahead was uncertain, but neither of them looked back. They couldn't afford to. Not with the shadows of Bloodfang looming behind them and the promise of a greater battle waiting just beyond the trees.
