Lock Her in My Heart

Author: : Deane Kisler
Genre: Romance
Fate brought a charming lady and a cold gentleman together. However, at first, it didn't seem like they weren't made for each other. Lyla and Joshua parted ways as quickly as they got married. Three years later, Lyla returned as a strong independent woman with a prominent family background and twins she loved to death. Joshua tried to reach his ex-wife all to no avail. One night as she was smiling and sipping from a glass of red wine, he showed up out of nowhere and pressed her against a pillar. The unreachable star Lyla was previously married to was now standing in front of her like a worthless rock. He whispered into her ear, "Finally, you are back!" After he kissed her forcefully, Lyla pushed him away and glared at him. "Have you lost your mind, Joshua? Need I remind you that we got divorced long ago? Stay away from me!" Joshua's jaw dropped to the floor.

Chapter 1 Divorce Me For Him

"So... You two have been together for almost three months. Did she ever sleep with you? Not even just once?"

In the deluxe suite of a luxury hotel, a woman wrapped her arms around a man's neck with a smile.

"Why do you want to talk about her? All she has is money, nothing else," the man said with a sneer.

"Okay, okay..."

The two were so immersed in pleasure that neither of them noticed that someone was leaning against the door frame, watching them quietly. Finally, when the silent observer was bored, she spoke up. "I'd use protection if I were you."

The man and the woman on the bed were startled by the sudden sound of her voice. They quickly but awkwardly pulled away from each other.

Nathan Truman was so frightened that he fell down from the edge of the bed and raised his head in a panic. When he saw the source of the voice, all the color drained from his face. "Lyla!"

Lyla Moreno looked down at her newly manicured nails. She had chosen the color lilac, and they glittered under the lights dazzlingly.

When she looked at the man's livid face, Lyla wrinkled her nose in disgust. "She was with another man last night. And now, she's with you. Who knows how many men she has been sleeping with? You never know what STD she might be carrying."

Nathan staggered to his feet and ran up to Lyla. He wanted to reach for her hand, but on second thought, he decided against it. His hand stopped mid-air for he didn't dare to touch her.

"J-just listen to me, Lyla. I...I don't have any feelings for her! You're the one that I love, Lyla. You and you alone!"

Love?

Lyla burst into giggles, as though she had heard the funniest joke. Did he mean he loved her money?

He was just a gigolo she met in a club. How dare he be so brazen and talk about love?

Lyla glanced at Nathan and shook her head wryly. She had spent millions on this shameless guy. Why on earth did she choose him? She must've been out of her mind at the time.

She used to think Nathan was quite attractive, but now he was nearly unsightly to look at.

Without saying anything more, Lyla turned around to leave.

Nathan knew that as soon as she left, he would lose his cash cow and that his carefree days were over. He went after her without thinking. "Lyla! Lyla, you have to believe me. I wasn't thinking straight just now. I was-"

The bodyguards waiting at the door stopped Nathan from following Lyla into the elevator.

She stepped inside the elevator and pressed the button. The bodyguards didn't follow her in. She figured they must be teaching Nathan a lesson, which she thought was a good idea. After all, he wasn't even as loyal as a pet dog, and he deserved a good beating.

But she didn't ask the bodyguards to do that, so whose orders were they following?

The elevator took her to the ground floor. Lyla walked out of the hotel and saw a familiar black limo parked outside the gate.

Oh, it was him.

With a smile at the corners of her mouth, Lyla sauntered towards the car unhurriedly. When the driver saw her approach, he immediately opened the back door for her, and the light from the street lamp flooded into the backseat of the car.

A well-dressed man was sitting inside. His suit was perfectly tailored to his figure, without a wrinkle in sight.

His palms rested casually on his knees, and the gem cufflinks he was wearing glittered under the light. He looked noble but not ostentatious.

He was the eldest son and the heir to the Harvey family-Joshua Harvey.

Lyla sat next to him and smiled. "I'm sorry you had to see such a joke."

Joshua turned to face her, his eyes gentle, but his tone was as indifferent as ever. "Do you really want to divorce me for a guy like that?"

Chapter 2 Honeymoon

Lyla had asked for a divorce three months ago, but Joshua hadn't replied a word. It was as though he didn't know anything about it. Unexpectedly, three months later, when she "got cheated on", he suddenly brought it up.

And why did his tone of inquiry sound so sarcastic?

Lyla, however, was no pushover. She looked at her newly-manicured nails and deliberately tried to provoke him, "At least he's good in bed. You, on the other hand..."

Joshua remained expressionless. He just looked at her steadily, unfazed by her outright insult to his manhood.

That was right. Such a provocation might've worked on ordinary men, but Joshua was always calm and collected, even being insulted.

But that was precisely why Lyla wanted to leave him. He was just so boring! It seemed that this man would never lose control of himself. He didn't flinch when she questioned him who lived on 14th Springton Street. He was also calm as usual when she demanded a divorce.

Pursing her lips, Lyla didn't say anything more. Anyway, her husband had had enough fun for today. It was meaningless for her to win this round of banter.

So she simply turned her head and looked out the window. The scenery outside was unfamiliar to her. Frowning, she asked, "It's not the way home, is it?"

"Dad and Mom miss us. They called me to ask if we could have dinner with them," Joshua explained patiently.

Oh. It suddenly clicked. Lyla took out a tissue and wiped off the red lipstick on her lips, and then took out another lipstick from her bag.

The color of the new lipstick wasn't fiery red like the earlier one, but a muted nude pink, which made her look more reserved and gentle.

The car soon pulled to a stop in the yard of the Harvey Residence. A servant trotted over to open the door for them. After getting out of the car, Lyla naturally slipped her arm around Joshua's. The two exchanged knowing glances and then stepped inside the house together like a loving couple.

"We're home!" Lyla announced brightly.

"Lyla!" When Joshua's mother, Maureen, came out of the kitchen, Lyla couldn't wait to hug her.

Maureen was pleased with Lyla's affectionate behavior. She looked her daughter-in-law up and down and frowned. "It's getting colder every day, yet you wear such thin clothes. Your hands are cold, too. Joshua, you should take care of your wife!"

Lyla blinked at her innocently. "Joshua is always so busy. He doesn't have the time to look after me."

With a gentle smile on his face, Joshua said lightly, "I'll take you to Iceland to see the Aurora Borealis once I'm done dealing with work. You have always wanted to travel there, right?"

Hearing this, Lyla beamed at him happily.

In Maureen's eyes, the two looked at each other with unconditional love. She sighed in satisfaction.

Joshua's father, Kameron, was a serious man, but because he hadn't seen his son and daughter-in-law in a long time, he smiled at them warmly. "Sit down. It's almost time for dinner. Maureen did some cooking by herself, knowing that you would be here for dinner tonight."

Lyla grinned in surprise, "Oh, my Gosh! Really? That's great! It's been a while since I tasted Maureen's home cooking and I really missed it. Thank you, Maureen!"

Lyla sat down next to Maureen at the table, constantly complimenting Maureen on her cooking.

She'd also occasionally urged Joshua to try some dishes, but none of which were his favorite. When he looked up at her with a thoughtful gaze, Lyla smiled back at him innocently. She was doing it on purpose.

Joshua shrugged it off and ate the food recommended by Lyla without any complaints.

He and Kameron talked about work over dinner. When Joshua mentioned that a big project was about to be completed, Kameron nodded with satisfaction.

"Just now you said that you were going to take Lyla to Iceland. I think that's a marvelous idea. When you got married, we were so preoccupied with the overseas cooperation that you skipped your honeymoon. This trip can make up for that."

"And maybe you'll come home pregnant," Maureen said with a wink. "I'm counting on it."

The piece of meat that Lyla had just picked up with her fork suddenly fell to her plate with a clatter. She abruptly raised her head and looked at Joshua, just in time to catch him frowning. However, the next second, the frown disappeared.

Chapter 3 Why Not Stay For The Night

Joshua broke the awkward silence at the table. With a calm expression, he said gently, "Mom, we've only been married for two years. We don't want a child yet."

Lyla didn't say anything. She lowered her head and pretended to focus on her plate, but a touch of bitter mockery flashed in her eyes. He didn't want a baby? Or did he just not want to have a baby with her?

Maureen knew that she had crossed a line just now, but Joshua was the only child of the Harvey family, and Lyla was also the only child of the Moreno family. The two families were both looking forward to having an heir. Biting her lip, Maureen wanted to try to persuade them, but Kameron gave her a disapproving look.

Maureen sighed and muttered, "You two just got married and you want to spend more time alone-I understand that. But you should start thinking about having a baby soon..."

After dinner, Lyla caught up with Joshua's parents for a little while longer. They didn't leave the house until ten-thirty in the evening.

Maureen had wanted to ask them to stay the night, but the couple refused her invitation at the same time. Joshua said that he had an important meeting in the morning and that the pertinent documents were at their house, so it would be troublesome to go back and get them tomorrow. In the end, Maureen had to let them go.

As soon as she got in the car, Lyla yawned sleepily. She closed her eyes, listening idly to the slight hum of the car's airconditioning.

Just as Lyla was drifting off to sleep, Joshua said lightly, "Nathan will never show up again in Cleopatra after tonight."

Hearing this, Lyla's eyes popped open in surprise.

The street lights coated his side profile in a warm glow. From his prominent nose to his chiseled jaw line, his face seemed to be God's best work of art.

One of the reasons why Lyla had chosen Nathan was that he was quite handsome, but even so, Nathan's good looks were nothing compared to that of the man sitting next to her now.

Joshua had good looks, a good family background, and a good personality. He was always gentle and calm, and he had a temperament that couldn't be compared.

If it weren't for the fact that her mother and Maureen had been best friends for over a decade and had entrusted her to Maureen's care on the deathbed, she wouldn't have been able to marry him.

"Don't provoke me in such a stupid way next time. I'm not as patient as I look," Joshua added, turning his head to look at Lyla coldly.

Despite being threatened by him, Lyla just smiled. She had figured that since Joshua didn't love her, then he wouldn't have minded if she paid a gigolo using his money. It turned out that her husband had simply been waiting for the perfect opportunity to throw it back at her face.

But she didn't expect that he waited three whole months before doing anything...

Well, on second thought, it made sense. That was Joshua Harvey for you.

He was like a beast lurking in the grass, waiting for its prey to relax its vigilance before striking-hard.

He wouldn't argue with her. Instead, he'd let her see the true colors of the man she had chosen with her own eyes. He would make her end the relationship on her own initiative, and in this way, he could solve this problem once and for all.

"Maybe you're just too bored and need something to do. Maybe my mom was right," Joshua said suddenly.

The smile on Lyla's face froze. "What? You mean... We should have a baby?" Ridiculous!

After a pause, Joshua whispered gently, "If you want a child, I can give you one."

He didn't say anything more, but Lyla understood what he meant. The feelings she had been suppressing all night suddenly came to a head. "You mean the kid living on 14th, Springton Street?"

The Harvey Residence wasn't far from the Harvey Mansion. Now that they had arrived, Lyla took a few deep breaths in an effort to calm down, but it was futile. The anger that had been brewing since three months ago was too much to handle.

"Mr. Harvey, although we were forced to marry and we don't have any feelings for each other, it doesn't mean that I'm willing to raise someone else's child. If you want to take the child home, just sign the divorce papers. By then, not only can you bring home the child, but also the child's mother."

Then she opened the door and got out of the car, slamming the door behind her. She stormed into the house without looking back, but she heard the sound of the car starting behind her. It seemed that Joshua had no intention of staying.

Why couldn't he stay at the Harvey Residence for the night?

Lyla shook her head wryly. Over the past three months, he went to 14th, Springton Street to keep somebody else company every night. Rather than some made-up meeting, that was the true reason why he left so hurriedly.
