"Get the scalpels, nurse Shane!"
"We are losing him! Check his blood pressure and make sure to pump the blood according to the time I told you!"
"Doctor Lisa, he is dropping!"
The theater was thrown into a frenzy as the doctors battled to save the life of the little boy who had a car accident. It took them more than three hours before they could revive him and finish the operation successfully.
"Damn! Such a tricky surgery! I am so famished I could eat a horse!" Lisa said, slumping down in her office chair.
She had to dodge the anxious looking parent of the boy who wanted to bombard her with questions. She needed to rest.
Shutting her eyes, she ran her hand through her golden wavy hair which she tied in a ponytail. She had discarded her operation gown so she could take a quick nap before going to the canteen to grab a bite.
Lisa brought out her purse to check the money left in it and she sighed, knowing that was the last money left with her. She was thinking if she should ask for an advance so she won't go broke all through the month.
"So much for this month! I wonder if Derrick had found a job already," she murmured to herself.
As she was thinking of what to do, a nurse came running to her office, looking anxious.
" Doctor Lisa! You are needed in the theater room! It's a critical condition!"
" Critical condition? What happened?"
" A little boy and his father were involved in an accident and the boy suffered a head injury. He needs an operation as soon as possible," The nurse said.
" Alright, I will be there. Get the necessary equipment ready," Lisa said, standing up quickly.
Although she was tired, saving a life supersedes everything. She picked up her coat and rushed out of the office to the surgery room.
Lisa and the other doctors were in the surgery room for more than two hours trying their best. Finally, they were through with the surgery and the lights to the operation room went off.
If words could describe tiredness, then the name Lisa would be the perfect description. She was damn tired and hungry! All she wanted to do was rush to her office to freshen up and then go to the canteen for a late night snack.
"Lisa, are you okay?" A male nurse asked, looking at her frustrated expression.
"Try not eating for fourteen hours amidst several hours of performing operations, then I am sure you will get the answer, Joe. Dammit! I am on the verge of breaking down!" She said, rolling her eyes.
Doctor Joe chuckled at her words before patting her shoulders," That's why you have me, sweetheart. I got a takeout in your office. So just freshen up and eat."
Lisa looked at him gratefully and she would have embraced him if she wasn't all sweaty." I owe you one, Joe"
Joe just smiled and turned around to leave. Lisa also decided to go to her office, luckily, there were no dramatic relatives of the person around.
But just as she turned around to leave, her eyes locked on a fierce looking pair of hazel eyes that seemed to bore through her. She scanned the person before her and noticed he had the most attractive features of the male species she had ever come across.
The perfect cheekbones and the face of a beauty god that could be mistaken for a Greek god. Amidst the plasters and bandages on him, he still looked dominant and cold.
There was something familiar about him that she just can't picture.
"My son... how is he?" His icy voice brought her back to reality.
"Your son?" Lisa asked, confused.
Then she began to connect the dots. No wonder he looked a little familiar. The little boy they just operated on was his son?
"Oh! He is out of danger and has been wheeled to the ICU. He will be awake anytime soon. You can go and meet him if you want" Lisa said, showing him the way to the ICU.
" Than... arrrgh!" The man was about to say something when he felt a sharp pain shooting through his head.
Lisa looked at him in concern." Are you alright, Mr?"
She was about to hold him when the man's glare stopped her. He waved her off as he struggled to walk to the place Lisa pointed to him.
Although Lisa saw that he was acting all arrogant, she knew he was in a bad shape too. Feeling hungry, she walked towards her office again so she could eat something.
She was about to enter her office when a nurse came running to her again.
"What is it this time around? I am not going to do any surgery until I have eaten!" Lisa said but the nurse shook her head.
"I am sorry, Doctor Lisa but this case is serious too. The two children are bleeding nonstop and..."
Lisa just sighed at her miserable life right now but as a pediatrician, she can't let her patients down. How could she let those adorable children go through pain?
" What's their age?" Lisa asked, following the nurse.
" Between nine and ten..." the nurse replied, filling her in on their information.
Lisa knew she was in for another round of surgery that might last for several hours!
*****
It's been roughly five hours at the surgical room. Lisa was so tired that she slumped down tiredly on her chair in the office. She rested for five minutes before going to freshen up.
She took out the take out that Joe ordered for her. It was already cold so she had to make do with the snacks inside. Just as she was munching on the food, her office door was pushed open.
"Not another surgery!" She said, looking at the nurse tiredly.
"That's not it, Doctor Lisa. The little boy we just operated on is awake and asking for his mother!" The nurse said.
"Awake? So soon? That's..."
"You have to go and check on him!" The nurse said, frantically.
Lisa followed the nurse to the ICU and true to get words, the little boy was throwing tantrums as he yelled for his mother. That was not good, it might lead to complications if he kept screaming.
She pushed open the door of the ward and saw the father trying to pacify the child. All the coldness and icy aura had all melted in the presence of his son. All that was on his face was helplessness.
She watched as his eyes only radiated love around the chubby angel. Just as she was thinking of what to do, the little boy raised his eyes and saw her standing at the entrance.
He squinted his eyes at her and his lips were pouted in an adorable pout. He blinked his eyes and the next thing everyone heard in the ward was his tiny voice, filled with happiness.
"Momma!"
His gaze never leaves Lisa. Was he calling her his mother?
What the fuck!
This was such a weird situation, damnit! Well, not totally weird because the little dumpling was a eye catcher. His glassy emerald eyes were boring through hers and those luscious lips were wrapped up in a pout.
What an adorable child even when wrapped up in bandage.
"Ha! Lisa! Stop dreaming! You heard it wrongly!" She scolded herself.
As she was contemplating on what to say, she didn't notice a pair of eyes gazing through her but stopped at the chubby little dumpling.
Lisa thought she must have heard wrongly. She smiled at the little boy and was about to correct him, when Edwin rushed towards them.
"Tiger, how are you? You scared me, Tiger" He asked, kissing his chubby hands and cheeks.
So even this ill-mannered man can be so nice with words? But he was so rude to her over a d over again. Lisa really wanted to roll her eyes at him for the upteenth time!
Zach, who was wondering where his father was, looked up at Edwin and smiled," Daddy, I am fine. But I am feeling sleepy again."
"Then sleep, Tiger," Edwin said, patting his head. His mind was finally at rest.
"Mummy, stay with me," Zach said, holding Lisa's hand tightly. His hands felt warm and it went straight to Lisa's heart, melting off all the anger she was feeling towards his father.
Lisa who thought she misheard, became speechless. She was just about to correct the little boy when she realized he had slept off. She sighed softly and let him hold her hands till he was deeply asleep.
"Don't worry, Mister. He would snap out of it when he wakes up. It's one of the side effects of the surgery," Lisa said and she began to explain to Edwin.
At the end of the five minute lecture, the only answer she got from him was a grunt. Lisa was getting frustrated as if she was talking to a log of wood! She slowly removed her hands from the sleeping boy and was about to leave when the iceberg finally uttered another word.
"Can he be discharged?" Edwin asked, looking at his son.
"Yes, he can be discharged but not right now. He needs to regain a little strenght. His vitals are okay. The only thing is for him to come for check-up regularly. I will be back for his next check-up. You can discharge him then" Lisa responded.
She didn't wait for him to say anything more before fleeing away from the ward. She held her pounding heart when she remembered what the cute like dumpling just called her.
"I would love to be a mother to such a cute son but... your iceberg of a father is a no!" She said to herself, walking briskly to her office.
*****
Zack was to be discharged that same afternoon as soon as Lisa finished her check-up.
"How long will it take?" Edwin asked, staring at Lisa.
"I am done. You can leave..."
"I meant what happened earlier today," Edwin corrected.
Lisa frowned at his words. Then she remembered how the little dumpling had called her his mother earlier.
"Oh, that." She grinned. "He's just a little confused. That's all."
She wasn't expecting the boy to call her mom either and when he did, she had been too shocked to react appropriately.
It was completely normal for patients to wake up in a confused state for some hours but it would go away before the day ended.
Lisa on impulse advised Edwin to take his medication too but he snarled at her indirectly telling her to mind her business. She had the feeling he would neglect his condition just to make sure Zach was okay.
But it looked like she was just a busybody! She shut her mouth instead and quickly left the ward after giving them a clean sheet.
***
As soon as they got home, Edwin received a phone call from Grandpa Logan, wanting to speak to Zack but he was already sleeping. He needed all the rest he could get.
"How are you holding up?" Grandpa Logan asked his grandson.
"I am good. Nothing big." He lied.
He heard the sigh from the other end. "I've seen your doctor's report. You aren't fooling me."
Edwin knew his grandpa wasn't bluffing. He had his fingers on almost every string in the country and pulling them was just as easy as riding a bike for him.
"I'll be fine. My main concern is Zack." He said, closing his eyes tight.
"It wasn't your fault, Ed."
"I should have seen the fucking deer!" He bawled, losing his edge.
"But you didn't and you both survived. He needs you just as much as you need him and I need the both of you equally as much." Logan took a breath.
"Does any of that make sense?"
He nodded to the receiver. "Yes, sir."
"Good. Now pull yourself together."
Edwin said he would and promised to call him the minute Zack woke up from his sleep.
His arm hurt badly but not as bad as the dull pain in his chest when he had seen Zack unconscious during the crash.
He had feared the worst back then and he still did, if he let himself have a moment of honesty.
He walked over to check on the sleeping child and he felt grateful for having been blessed with such a wonderful kid. He would give anything without a moment's hesitation to see his son happy.
His mind went to that happy face at the hospital. The lady that talks non-stop. Why would his son refer to her as his mother? That was the first time they were seeing the doctor.
Edwin just hopes his son recovers himself faster.
"Mummy!!!"
Edwin, who was about to go back to his room, heard his son's voice. He stopped in his tracks.
"Mummy! Mummy!! Mummy!!!" He kept muttering.
Edwin was confused. What the hell was happening? Why would his son call a strange woman his mother?
Finally having a peaceful time for herself, Lisa fell asleep in her office. She simply can't place it but her dreams were filled with the little chubby dumpling.
She woke up with a start when she saw him in her dreams tugging the cuff of her shirt and screaming 'Mommy!' with the entirety of his vocals.
"Ayyy! Why would I dream of a stranger?"
She checked the time immediately after she woke up to see it was just another slow day. Fuck! She growled to herself.
She brought her phone out hoping it would provide just the distraction she needed.
The first thing she saw when she unlocked the device was a text from her agent telling her that her rent was overdue and that she would be locked out.
She sighed.
Might as well get comfortable in her office, she thought bitterly. There was nothing she could do about it since she had siphoned her salary and most of her savings into her parent's account.
There was a knock on her door and a young man dressed as a doctor, walked in.
"Hungry?" He asked with a grin.
"As hell, Joe. And not just that, I might as well become homeless in a few hours from now," Lisa said, shaking her head.
Joe brought out a takeout and placed it on Lisa's office desk." Got something from my salary and decided to share. I could help..."
" No, Joe. I know you need it more than I do. Your sister can't wait. I will manage, sweetheart," Lisa said, smiling at him.
Shane smiled bitterly at Lisa's words. Indeed, he needed to deposit a huge sum of money monthly for his sister's med. But he can't watch her in such a dilemma.
"Make sure you finish every single bit and you can move in with me tomorrow. I just have to clear the garage," Joe offered.
" Alright. I will think about it, Joe," Lisa said, squeezing a smile.
The beeper on Joe's pocket started beeping so he had to rush out of the office after saying his goodbyes.
Lisa was grateful for the meal. She had been hungry since this morning and had just a few cups of coffee and beverages offered by the hospital.
Her mind drifted to the little boy. She hoped he was finally okay.
****
The next day, Edwin woke up with bags around his eyes. His son had been calling out that damn doctor all night long! He managed to sleep during the early hours of this morning after Zach fell asleep.
He walked out of the room so he could take his shower and freshen up. When he got to the bathroom, he stared at the various bruises on his body.
He groaned at the excruciating pain he was currently trying so hard to hide. He just wants his son to be fine. His injuries were nothing compared to his son.
Just as Edwin finished taking his bath, he heard a piercing cry and his heart dampened that instant.
Zach had woken up and was asking for that damn doctor again! His screams were becoming louder as he quickly put on his clothes even when the pains were tearing through his body.
He ran to his son's room and saw him throwing things around.
"Son..."
"Where is my mummy! I want my mummy!" He screamed at the top of his lungs.
Although the servants were surprised, no one dared say anything. It was a well known fact that the little Master has no mother, so where was this supposed mother?
Edwin was having a strong migraine. He knew his son very well. Zach won't stop until he has gotten what he wanted. But didn't that doctor say he would be alright after waking up?
"What a trash!" He muttered under his breath. Taking a stride towards his son, he tried to calm him," Stop all this, Tiger. I will take you to meet your... to meet her. Can you please stop?"
Zach looked at his father to be sure he was telling the truth. Edwin reassured him with a nod and a smile.
"Get him prepared and also tell the driver to get ready to take us to the hospital," Edwin instructed the butler.
"Yes, Mr. Hill"
In less than thirty minutes, Edwin was at the hospital with Zach whose eyes were darting around. He was looking for his mother. As he was still searching, his eyes caught Lisa who was about to get off from work.
"Momma!" He boomed in a singsong voice.
Lisa, who thought she might still be dreaming, turned around to see the little chubby dumpling smiling at her. She bet he would have come running to get if his father hadn't held him tightly.
She quickly walked up to them and Zach latched himself to her, removing his hands from his father's grip. He missed his momma.
Lisa was confused but decided to have a word with Zach's father alone.
"Zach, do you think you can do something for me?" She said, smiling as she whispered into his ear.
He nodded rapidly. "Sure, mom."
Lisa radioed for Shane to come in and when she did, she turned her attention back to Zach and said to him, "Follow the nice lady to the shop across the street and get a candy for me. Will you?"
She squeezed a bill into his hands and her heart fell knowing she had just given up her breakfast, lunch, and dinner all in one. She would have to force herself to eat out of the hospital cafeteria or starve to death inside her office.
But then she had to speak to Edwin. As soon as Zach left with Nurse Shane, she looked at Edwin.
"Can... can we speak in my office?" Lisa asked.
"Hm"
Lisa just rolled her eyes at his answer as she led him to her office. Just as they got to the entrance, she remembered her office was a mess!
"Uhmm... let's talk here, instead," Lisa said, stopping at the entrance.
Edwin narrowed his eyes but kept quiet.
"What the fuck was that?" She asked Edwin in a low tone.
"Watch your tongue. Aren't you the doctor or are you a quack?" Edwin retorted, glaring at her.
"What! A quack? I saved his life, mister, if you had forgotten!" Lisa wanted to scream at him but she controlled herself.
Edwin had a look that matched hers perfectly. He shrugged. "I have no idea. You tell me. You're the doctor after all."
"He threw a tantrum all night and a half through this morning asking for his mom. Which I suspected was you."
Lisa palmed her temple down to her face and sighed. "How is this possible?"
Edwin shrugged again. He looked like he would rather be anywhere else but there at that moment, he .
After another ten minutes, Zach came back with Nurse Shane and ran straight to Lisa.
"Mummy, let's go home. I want to show you my latest invention..."
" Zach!" Edwin called out angrily but when he saw his son about to tear up, he controlled his emotions.
Lisa was also getting frustrated but she had to do this for the little boy's sake and hope he snaps out of it quickly.
" Let's do this, Sweetheart. I will go with you but you know I have to work, right? I will stay with you till it's time for my work," Lisa said, smiling at the brooding little boy.
Zach nodded his head and Edwin had no choice but to accept too.
Thirty minutes later, they got to the Hill's Mansion and Lisa was taken aback by its beauty. Zack was asleep at that moment.
The house looked so majestic and screamed wealth. As she was staring around, she saw a portrait hanging above the wall just beside the marble stairs.
She recognized the elegant aged man in the painting.
He was the reason her family was as miserable as they were. The hatred she had for him was massive and it lived comfortably in a special place in her heart.
"Logan Hill." She said almost to herself.
The fucking bastard, she thought bitterly.
Seeing her stare at his grandfather's picture, Edwin said with a sneer.
"He is Zach's great-grandpa."
He had no idea how what he had just told Lisa had made a nuclear bomb go off inside her head.
Lisa suddenly felt as if she was suffocating as she remembered what Logan Hill did to her parents and how it had almost destroyed her family growing up.
It was the reason she was going out of her way to make sure she supported her parents even if it meant sleeping in her office.
Edwin noticed the change in her demeanor. He was about to ask her what was wrong when she ran off leaving the house.
Just as she ran out of the mansion, her phone rang making her curse. She needed to get the hell out of there!
"Hello?" She said into her phone.
She recognized the voice of her mother but she couldn't understand what she was saying. Her words were jumbled and somehow it sounded as if she had been crying.
"Slow down, mother. Can you start all over?"
Lisa listened to what her mother was saying more intently and her eyes bulged when she heard the whole thing.
The hand she used to hold her phone up to her ear shook.
"I'll be there right away," She said, allowing her tears to flow.
