Chapter 1 The Dying Heir's Bride

The Benson family was hosting a grand birthday gala for their two daughters.

Down on the first floor, the ballroom blazed with crystal chandeliers and swarmed with the city's elite.

But upstairs, hidden away in a forgotten corner, sat a tiny storage room with no windows and no sunlight.

Evelyn Benson had been living in that room for the past ten years.

The door suddenly burst open with a loud crash.

Jessica Benson stood in the doorway in a couture gown worth millions. She tossed a cheap, wrinkled dress at Evelyn's face, smug and arrogant.

"Party's starting," Jessica said. "Mom and Dad want you in this. And remember, you're just my backdrop tonight. Wipe that pathetic look off your face and don't humiliate us."

Evelyn stared down at the flimsy dress crumpled at her feet. The fabric was so poorly made that threads were already pulling loose, and her fingers shook a little as she looked at it.

Twenty years earlier, the family's nanny had secretly switched Evelyn and Jessica at birth. Because of that, Jessica had grown up in the Benson household, while Evelyn-the Bensons' real biological daughter-had been raised in the countryside.

When the family finally brought her home ten years ago, Evelyn thought her suffering had ended. She was wrong. She had only traded one hell for another.

In this house, she was the unwanted one, while Jessica was the daughter everyone loved and spoiled.

"Still undressed? Do I have to dress you?" Jessica wrinkled her nose. "This room reeks. Just being here is suffocating."

She slammed the door shut behind her.

Evelyn got up slowly and changed into the ridiculous, shapeless dress.

An hour later, Evelyn appeared at the top of the staircase. For a heartbeat, the ballroom fell silent. Even in the glaringly cheap dress, her striking and aloof beauty still caught everyone's attention.

Jealousy crossed Jessica's face for a second before she quickly put on a sweet smile. She hurried over and linked her arm through Evelyn's. "Evelyn, you finally decided to come down."

Onstage, Stephen Benson, Evelyn's biological father, smiled at the guests as he announced, "Today we're celebrating my daughter Jessica's birthday-and Evelyn's as well. Thank you all for being here."

His eyes passed over Evelyn with no warmth at all, only a clear warning in them.

Evelyn stood quietly beside the rest of the family, still and composed, like a decoration someone had placed there.

Then she heard a faint metallic snap from overhead. She looked up right away and saw the huge crystal chandelier starting to sway loose from its fixture.

"Watch out!" She reached for Jessica on instinct, but someone else moved quicker.

"Jessica!"

It was Simon Elliott, Evelyn's fiancé. He rushed toward them in a panic as the chandelier began to fall. But he didn't reach for Evelyn. In his desperate rush to shield Jessica, he shoved Evelyn aside with brutal force.

"Move! Don't block me!"

Evelyn stumbled, lost her footing, and crashed down directly beneath the falling chandelier. The impact exploded across the ballroom-crystal shattering, glass flying everywhere.

Agony tore through her.

Evelyn lay in a spreading pool of her own blood, her vision swimming red. Through the haze, she could make out her parents and her fiancé huddled around Jessica, who hadn't a single scratch on her.

"Jessica, are you all right?"

"Thank goodness..."

Not one of them looked back at Evelyn-even as she lay there, bleeding out in the cheap dress they'd forced on her.

So that was how much she meant to them. Even when her life was on the line, she wasn't worth saving-not even as an afterthought.

In that moment, something deep inside her broke beyond repair.

......

When Evelyn opened her eyes again, she was lying in a sterile hospital room.

No one from her family was there. The only voices she heard were two nurses murmuring outside.

"That poor thing. They brought her in covered in blood, and not a single family member has come to see her."

"I heard she's a Benson. They didn't even send a caregiver. The police had to hound them before they paid."

Evelyn stared at the ceiling while a tear slid down the side of her face. She wiped it away quickly.

Ten years of trying to please the Bensons, ten years of shrinking herself down in hopes they would finally accept her-it all felt like a cruel joke now, especially after Simon had shoved her under that chandelier.

She picked up her phone and called Jessica.

Jessica answered in a soft, pampered tone, still soaking up everyone's concern after the accident. "Hello? Who is this?"

"It's me," Evelyn said, her voice hoarse but completely cold. "I don't want Simon anymore. You can have him."

Jessica went quiet for a second. "What are you talking about?"

"In exchange," Evelyn continued slowly and clearly, "I'll take your place and marry into the Miller family."

The Millers were the most powerful family in the city. Their heir, Kellan Miller, was supposedly too sick to see the year out-and violently unhinged to boot.

Within three days, the two marriage arrangements had been swapped. The Bensons couldn't wait to get rid of Evelyn, calling her a curse on the family. The Millers didn't object. They even moved the wedding up by six months.

On the wedding day, Evelyn arrived with no special attention, and there was no real exchange of vows.

Kellan was supposedly in critical condition getting emergency treatment, so Evelyn went through the ceremony by herself while the guests openly mocked her. The whole wedding felt as humiliating as it was ridiculous.

And of course, she spent her wedding night alone.

At the same time, in an exclusive private club, a man sat on a leather sofa with his long legs crossed. His assistant stood in front of him, holding out a file. "Mr. Miller, this is the full background report on your bride, Evelyn Benson."

Kellan took the file and opened it. His striking eyes showed an easy, almost careless charm, but something reckless and dangerous lurked underneath.

He scanned the line calling Evelyn timid, mediocre, a doormat-and chuckled.

"Timid? Mediocre?"

He remembered the wedding footage-Evelyn standing alone, a room full of vultures circling, her face carved from stone. Not a flicker of defeat.

"Maybe she really is a good match for a dying man like me."

Chapter 2 A Wife's Duties

A month went by, and Evelyn still hadn't seen Kellan even once.

Rumors flew around that Kellan was already at death's door, and that his new wife would end up a widow.

Evelyn paid no attention to the gossip. Right then, she sat in the presidential suite of the Prime Hotel, the most exclusive place in all of the city.

The meek act she had kept up around the Bensons was gone. Her face now looked sharp and in control.

Behind her, Sean Cooper, her most trusted subordinate, held out a classified dossier.

Dressed all in black, he didn't bother hiding his anger. "Boss, after everything the Bensons put you through, why would you lower yourself by marrying into the Miller family?"

Evelyn slowly swirled the red wine in her glass while the city lights glowed through the windows.

"Eight years ago, there was a massacre that took out my mentor and everyone he trained. The trail went cold right here. Only one family in town has the reach to shut down my entire network-the Millers."

She finished her glass in one go before continuing, her voice turning cold and firm, "The only way to find out what really happened is to get inside the Miller family. Once I know the truth, I have no plans to stay married to Kellan."

It was late when Evelyn finally returned to a villa, where she had been staying since the wedding.

She opened the bedroom door and stopped short.

Steam rolled out of the half-open bathroom. A man walked out, bare-chested, a black robe hanging loose around him.

He was very lean, but there was nothing weak or sickly about him. His body looked tight and well-defined. His face was stunning, yet carried a cold menace that made it hard to hold his gaze.

Their eyes met, and Kellan's brow furrowed as he studied her with icy scrutiny.

"You're the Benson girl they married off to me?"

Evelyn quickly hid the sharpness in her expression and slipped back into the meek, timid role everyone expected. "Yes."

Kellan snorted and walked past her to the sofa. He sat, picked up a glass-fluid, controlled. "Do you know I'm dying?"

Half his face stayed hidden in the dim light, making his expression impossible to read.

Evelyn measured her words. "I only heard you've been unwell."

"Unwell?" Kellan repeated, as if she had said something funny. "Come here."

Evelyn walked over obediently and stopped in front of him.

The next second, he snatched her wrist and yanked her onto his lap.

A surprised breath escaped her as she landed against him. His cold fingers closed around her chin in a firm grip.

"You were willing to marry a dying man. What did the Bensons promise you? Or are you after something else?"

He was so close that she could smell the faint medicinal bitterness under the rich wine on his breath.

The reports had described Evelyn as timid and compliant, the type who let her feelings for a man control everything. Yet the fear on her face didn't match the steady heartbeat he could feel against him.

Evelyn tensed a little. Kellan was much sharper-and far more dangerous-than the rumors made him sound.

Instead of pulling back, she slid both arms around his neck. Her voice came out soft, with a hint of challenge underneath. "You're overthinking it. I married you to do my duty as your wife. And maybe... give you a child."

"A child?" The amusement disappeared from Kellan's face, and his grip on her waist tightened suddenly.

Evelyn kept her expression calm even as he leaned in closer, stopping just short of her lips.

"You want me to put a baby in you so you'll have a claim on my inheritance when I die?" His voice dropped to a low, rough murmur. "Quite ambitious."

"Why shouldn't I be?" Evelyn lifted her head and met his eyes directly.

Kellan studied her face for a moment before asking quietly, "How exactly do you plan to fulfill your duties as my wife?"

His gaze turned predatory, like a wolf sizing up its prey.

Sensing the danger, Evelyn tried to pull away.

Before she could move, he wrapped an arm around her and pinned her to the bed.

The air between them grew heavy and intimate.

Only then did she realize he meant to follow through, and her whole body went stiff. She had taken the act too far.

Just as she wondered whether she should knock the supposedly sick man out, he stopped abruptly. He let her go and stood up, all interest gone.

"My health isn't the best. I'm afraid I won't be able to satisfy you."

He picked up his wineglass and walked out of the bedroom without looking back, his manner distant and cool. The door slammed shut behind him.

Evelyn let out a long breath and sank back against the bed. That was close-his presence almost made her drop her act.

......

The next morning, Evelyn and Kellan sat across from each other at the dining table.

He had changed into an impeccably tailored suit. He still looked pale, but there was no hiding the natural authority of a man used to being obeyed.

Evelyn ate quietly for a while before mentioning casually, "My sister Jessica and Simon are having their engagement party today. I'll be going later."

Kellan's hand paused while turning a page of the newspaper.

Evelyn glanced up. "Will you come?"

As her husband, Kellan would normally be expected to go with her to an engagement party that connected the Benson and Elliott families. He didn't look up. "The butler's got a gift. The driver will take you."

The message was clear-he wasn't going.

Evelyn looked down, hiding her contempt. Of course not-a dying man wouldn't show up at such a public event.

"All right."

Chapter 3 The Engagement Party

Luxury cars lined the long driveway outside the private estate where the engagement party was being held. The guest list included some of the most prominent people in high society.

As soon as Evelyn stepped out of her car, the chatter near the venue entrance ground to a sudden halt.

She was wearing a flowing silvery-white silk gown that swept gracefully around her ankles. Her long, wavy hair fell past her waist, and her composed attitude made her look effortlessly striking.

The dress was the final piece ever designed by Starlight, one of the world's most exclusive fashion icons, making it an irreplaceable custom creation that money simply couldn't buy.

The surrounding guests stared without bothering to hide it. A few looked completely amazed, others wore clear expressions of envy, and quite a few eyed her with blatant mockery and pity.

"Well, look who finally decided to show up. The soon-to-be widow herself," a sharp voice called out.

It was Chloe Harris, Jessica's closest friend.

She blocked Evelyn's path and sneered at her dress. "Today's about Jessica and Simon. Who are you trying to impress? That's obviously a knockoff. It screams cheap. Aren't you embarrassed?"

Evelyn didn't waste her breath on a reply and tried to step around her, but Chloe quickly grabbed her wrist and raised her voice to draw more attention.

"What, hit a nerve?" Chloe sneered. "All dressed up like that. Don't tell me you still have feelings for Simon. You're a married woman now. Act like it."

A few wealthy women standing nearby shuffled closer to join the conversation, snickering among themselves.

"I heard Kellan was rushed to the ER right before the wedding-still bedridden. A month without a husband, she must be desperate."

"She grew up in the middle of nowhere. Of course she has no class. Marrying into the Millers didn't fix that. Look at that dress. Who's she trying to seduce?"

"Simon pushed her away to save Jessica because he already knew what she was really like. A woman like that deserved to be dumped."

The insults rained down, until Evelyn had enough. She weighed her options-break Chloe's arm, or silence her more subtly.

"Are you done?" she asked. Her voice stayed cool, but it had an edge that Chloe had never heard before.

Chloe flinched under Evelyn's gaze-then went red with rage. "How dare you! Your husband's not here because he's dying or because he can't stand being seen with you?"

Evelyn showed none of her old timidness. Her calm made Chloe's outburst look even more ridiculous, which only made Chloe angrier.

"Think the Miller name protects you?" Chloe sneered. "Everyone knows Simon dumped you. You're just like used goods. The Millers will throw you out soon enough too!"

Evelyn raised her hand and slapped her. The sharp sound cut through the crowd, and Chloe stared back in shock.

"Now will you shut up?" Evelyn asked.

"You bitch! You actually hit me!"

Furious, Chloe lifted her hand to slap Evelyn back. Before she could swing, tires squealed as a black Bentley screeched to a halt, a black SUV right behind it.

The SUV doors opened, and several bodyguards in black suits rushed out. In seconds, they surrounded Chloe and pulled her hand off Evelyn's wrist.

"What are you doing? Let go of me!" Chloe screamed in panic. "Do you know where you are? Do you know who I am? You won't last a day if you don't let me go!"

The lead bodyguard stayed completely expressionless. "You dared to insult Mrs. Miller?"

Chloe froze when she spotted the dark-gold Miller crest on his collar. These men belonged to the Miller family, whose reach extended from the pinnacle of high society to the depths of the underworld.

The crowd went quiet. The guests who had been mocking Evelyn just moments earlier didn't dare say another word.

Chloe's arrogance vanished. "S-so what if you're with the Millers? I didn't even do anything..."

Even as she protested, panic was clearly taking over. She'd always heard that Evelyn had no standing in the family, that the Millers barely acknowledged her. So why were those bodyguards protecting her?

Just then, the rear passenger door of the Bentley opened slowly.

Kellan stepped out-same black suit. Cold fury hid beneath his calm face, and the crowd shrank back.

Evelyn stared at him, completely surprised. He had said he wasn't coming. What changed his mind?

Ignoring the nervous looks around him, Kellan walked straight to Evelyn and slipped an arm around her waist. He pulled her against him in a smooth, possessive way.

"M-Mr. Miller..." Chloe collapsed to the ground, her voice shaking.

Kellan looked down at Evelyn and gently brushed a loose strand of hair from her face. Then he lifted his gaze to the crowd with cold eyes.

"Let me make one thing clear," he said. "No one disrespects my wife and gets away with it."
